  1. You mean I have to root for A&M now? Okay... it's only for a few years, and only when they're on offense.

  3. This kid is gonna be fun to root for. How many kids today announce their commitment through the hometown newspaper? No videos. No social media. Just low key, down to earth. Heā€™s gonna out perform some bigger names with more stars by the name. Mark it down.

  6. Listen Beavis, youā€™re not a smart guy, I get that. I didnā€™t elect Trump for a halo. I donā€™t care whoā€™s feelings he hurts. I donā€™t care what he supposedly did before his election. I donā€™t care how many women he has slept with. We elected him for other reasons. Many of those reasons have come to fruition. Now we are enjoying the economy and Supreme Court we deserve. The American worker is working again, in real jobs. The minorities are working at the highest rate ever. Wages are up. Companies are hiring. Investors are confident. So, you keep talking halos with your educated self. The rest of us will sing God bless America...and if you donā€™t like it.....Get the Hell out.

  9. Very well said. Expectations vary by year. Ive seen members of other fan bases pick at me for paying attention to whats coming up the ranks every year....but I do it to know what to expect in the coming years. Its how I knew 2017-2020 were gonna be deep playoff run seasons. And also how I knew 2016 was "the calm before the storm". That 16' team brought in nothing defensively from the jump, so there was no reason to expect anything high out of them. 14 and 15 naturally came with high expectations because of the drop in classes...but I can't say anyone thought those teams were 'special' persay. MAYBE 14 but it didnt take me long to realize they weren't gonna do much, especially when the injuries kicked in. 17, 18 and 19 teams on the other hand have/had always showed signs of being special. And I'd label 20 as 'very good' despite losing Haynes. I had mixed views on what 21 would be like, but with big transfer at QB...I now have them as 'very good' potential. 23 as well. But 22 may actually be 'special'.

  10. Yeah, probably a confluence of factors (prior to the State win) contributed to this... LOCATION: Longview High's not a metro-area program, so really only the few regional recruiting reporters who actually watch Longview games have been talking him up. Not to mention the fact that Longview hasn't produced many D-1 quarterbacks. Not to mention he's not a big social media user, more of a reserved and well-mannered lead-by-example personality. He's not out there pushing his hype videos. Too busy watching film and working out. STATS: Though he's rewritten the Lobo QB record book, (outside of the state championship game) his stats aren't as gaudy as QBs who play in more wide-open Spread offenses (though his efficiency rating is second to none). While he's certainly a legit running threat, our offense doesn't rely on his legs. So his rush stats (while decent) are also not exactly eye-popping. Again, there are plenty of small-school and/or metroplex area QBs throwing the ball 60 times a game whose numbers "look" better. MEASURABLES: Though tall and slender, his dimensions are not quite "prototypical." Not yet, at least. Like his aforemention stats: he's solid but not exceptional enough to compensate for our remote location. I know this may be hard pill for a lotta East Texans to swallow, but our area is considered "the sticks." The perception might be that he's just a strong-armed hick who impresses the rubes. Finally: he doesn't really fit a mold. Any mold, that I can think of. King's not a "Tom Brady" pure pocket passer or a "Cam Newton" physical specimen or a "Kyler Murray" cheat code. Haynes is a cerebral, disciplined, athletic quarterback with above-average mechanics and an as-yet-unknown ceiling. If Jimbo can reel him in, Haynes will make him look like a genius.

  11. This is key right here, and it's something I've observed very closely in my (very recent) ride on the Lobo bandwagon thus far: It's very much a year-to-year outlook. Some teams, you just know from the get-go that a deep run is unlikely (2014, 2016). Some teams seem to have all the pieces, but just can't put it all together (2015). Other teams are right on the verge of greatness, only to blow it at a crucial moment (2017). Some of the many things that made the 2018 squad so special is: they showed their potential, fulfilled it, were pressed into clutch situations and rose to the challenge. They didn't coast on a talent advantage or allow the outcome to be determined by luck. They made it happen. That's what's going to have be the difference in 2019 in order to repeat. Are we talented? No doubt. Well-coached? Certainly. Do we have momentum? As much as anyone else. Is everyone on our schedule going to be gunning for us? You better believe it. When the pressure's on, the hype is at its pinnacle, and it's win-or-go-home time, will this team rise to the challenge? Time will tell...

  13. Either this or the game winning toss vs Lufkin in 2017 is the greatest HK-Kamden pass connection. I remember sitting in Lobo and watching this play go down...it may not seem like it but the level of difficulty in this clip is crazy. From the throw to the catch.

  17. For anyone questioning his physical ability: thatā€™s a cross-body 50-yard throw on the run that drops over the wide receiverā€™s inside shoulder. You can count the number of 2020 quarterbacks who are capable of that play on one hand.

  23. Tyler Lee thread will be up in the next few days or so...... since I've had a few people ask. ------- For the record.... I absolutely 100% believe EVERY team strives for a state championship EVERY season. I believe every fan desires it too. No matter who their team is. I wasn't pointing out any single program in my above post....I can think of several here in East Texas that seem to live on a cliff when it comes to their post seasons (Carthage, Gilmer, Longview).... but also others statewide (I DID say statewide in the original post)...... like Katy, Trinity, Judson, Aledo, Highland Park.....etc etc etc. I'm extremely grateful for our playoff history, our district history, our district titles, current district winning streak. And I'm very excited about our upcoming season....no matter when it ends for us. We don't have as much history as SOME programs........but we have a hell of a lot more history than MOST. I refuse to hang my head about that. Over this winter......Mav fans posted excitement concerning the new coach, big facility upgrades, a few transfers, graduating talent that went to the next level. We posted excitement about the upcoming season with returning starters and the prospect of another great season. We got excited about the new staff that has been added. Then we got excited to see that some of the state's top prognosticators are picking us to do big things in 2019. SO this was the place for us to be excited and talk about it. The response has been that some have chided us about the excitement. Said we were blowing things out of proportion. Puffing our chests. Calling ourselves unbeatable. Someone even stated we didn't deserve the facility upgrades.... we needed to sit down and be quiet. But when we say we don't expect state semi-final appearances and/or state titles to declare a season a success... we are told we are resigning ourselves to low expectations. We are preparing our minds for failure. Accepting our fate as mediocre. Can't win. We are either talking too highly..... or have no expectations at all. Anyhow..... I'm excited about Maverick Football. I have been for a long while.... and I continue to be....not only for 2019....but for seasons ahead. We're a 5A Div II program.... and I couldn't be more excited about what that means to the program long term. This is where I think we can really flourish. Time will tell. Ready to stay in the 5A lane and enjoy the ride!

  25. In regards to 2014, I'm not sure when you stepped on that season, but everyone in Lobo Nation was beyond excited before the season. We just had a great season in 2013, having lost to A&M in one where we beat ourselves again, but we were bringing back everyone almost. Dropping down, and bringing that much back, we just expected to compete overall. And from the get go, it just wasn't there. From the scrimmage on, that team just wasn't what we expected and I think a lot of us expected to lose to Lufkin in round 1. The loss came a week later, but we all knew we weren't State Title contenders. 2015, we were hopeful, but we just couldn't stop Duffey and company when it came down to it. 2016, I think from the get go we knew weren't going to compete for a Title, but again we were hopeful something would happen. 2005 and 2009 was really the only years that I can remember flat out everyone expected us to win things. 2005 was a complete dude, but you could see that coming 2 or 3 weeks left in the season. 2009, they got back but just couldn't overcome LT. 2010 was the most unexpected of the bunch. Starting 1-3, and losing everything from those back to back teams, I think we all expected just to get into the post season. But they took us on a fantastic run that none of us saw coming. It's a year to year thing as you said. We have the talent now, coming off that State Title run, we fully expect to make another run. But I consider that run just into December. That, I believe, should be our goal every single season.

  26. Good analysis. If I had to compare him to somebody, heā€™s Ryan Tannehill. Legit wheels but isnā€™t what I would call dual threat, good arm but not blow you away arm, and is best operating from under center on bootlegs and 5 step drops. Heā€™s smaller framed than Tannehill, but probably a slightly better athlete. Tannehill did play WR at A&M for a year while he was the backup QB. He had 4.5 speed by doesnā€™t have near the shuttle that King has. But overall thatā€™s the closest comparison I have. Especially in todayā€™s spread game where guys like King donā€™t exist anymore.

  27. Well heā€™s not a huge camp guy. He doesnā€™t have a elite arm strength or anything and doesnā€™t look like he would be the athlete he is. Looks too thin and you donā€™t expect him to have the speed he has. But his decision making and vision are elite. His throwing accuracy is better than most at his age and he has the intangibles of a winner. Itā€™s easy to overlook him, but when you break down his game there arenā€™t a ton of weaknesses outside of maybe you would like to see a little more arm strength. But heā€™s got enough arm to make all the throws, heā€™s just not going to be one of those kids that throws the tightest spiral or most velocity.

  30. The elementary gym was a total loss and has been torn down completely. The high school gym, I think, will be ready for practice and PE classes. No games. The math wing, band hall, and cafeteria (which are on the opposite end of the school from the gym) are also supposed to be ready for school. Itā€™s all the classrooms, offices, restrooms, computer and science labs, etc that make up the bulk of the school in the middle that cannot be used. Thatā€™s where the portables come in. There are 11 or 12 which will serve as the temporary campus until everything can be repaired/replaced. The high school parking lot is a construction zone of sorts. The administration and school board have had their hands full for sure. AND it was our superintendentā€™s first year as a supt. She has handled it as well as a seasoned veteran, with help/advice from other supts who have experienced similar disasters. We knew she would though, as she was our middle school principal for 10 years and an Alto ISD teacher before that. Hometown lady doing things right! We are blessed.

  31. King Haynes is a great pickup for Jimbo. He obviously needs some time in the weight room, but heā€™ll be the best QB recruit under Jimbo since Winston. Itā€™s very surprising to me that ATM and Tenn were his only suitors.

  32. I was reading @Mavchamp's blog post over on his Maverick site, and this line stuck out to me... Obviously this was in reference to Longview's fan base and our high expectations every single year, and of course I think a rebuttal is needed. There's no doubt we have very high expectations for our players and our staff. Nobody likes losing, but at Longview, for better or worse, we expect to win every game we play in. We've been extremely spoiled with the level of football our program has played since that first playoff season back in 1967, following the 20 year playoff drought. Do I think some in our fan base have unrealistic expectations? Sure. But this State Championship or bust ideology Mavchamp mentioned is only there on a year by year basis. I feel like most of our fan base realizes, we're not going to win State every single season. It's unrealistic to believe otherwise, especially in the class we're currently in. It's too competitive, and really with the landscape of things and the way things are changing with the big metroplex taking over, it's a shocker that we're even still competing. But, I do think all of Lobo Nation expects to compete every single year. We've won nearly 40 district championships, we'll be over the 740 win mark by the end of the season, we've suffered just four non-winning seasons in the last 50 years. That comes with the territory of having this much of a consistent run. Our blip in the late 90s, early 00s, reset our program. But even in those down years, we were still competing in games. We weren't losing 56-14 or 60-14 or anything like that against anyone (other than Cedric Benson's Midland Lee). Expectations are good to have. Some programs are different than others. The fact that we finally reached the pinnacle, hasn't lessened our appetite for more success. The last 17 years are the best this program has seen overall in our history. Yes, we've had numerous other teams in the past that have found success. But what Pat Collins started back in 2001, and continuing it on to beating #1 nationally ranked Evangel in 2002 led everything up to last year's team finally bringing home the one thing we lacked. We expect to compete with every single team we face every single week, that's the real gist of it. We have had teams perform way better than a lot of us expected at the start of the season. We've had teams completely let us down during the regular season after what great expectations we had at the start. And we've had teams perform great all season long only to, better lack of a better word, choke come the time we needed them to step up. A lot of Longview, and I would imagine East Texas, recognizes that we should have more State Titles than we have. But it doesn't matter. We finally got one last year. We've done the district title run, we've done the long playoff run. We're ready for a state title run. If different programs want to have different expectations, so be it. I truly believe believing you can compete with any one in the state is the first step to taking that next step. We started it back in 2001 with the Midland Lee win, continued it in 2002 with the Evangel win and quarterfinal run and minus a blip here and there, we've continued to compete with every single team we've played since. And that's all anyone can ask of our boys in HS Football.

  37. Hey, I hear you. Once upon a time, Carthage was really good at baseball and that was fun to do something well other than football. Now Iā€™m going to say something thatā€™s a little tough...ok, here it comes and sorry........ Are you simply disappointed your boys canā€™t consistently get it done at the highest level on the football field and are required to lean on girls volleyball to boost your schoolā€™s Lonestar Cup ranking so you feel better about everything? This is Texas. Football is king in this state and Carthage is the king in 4A.

  38. Back in the day when I was calling high school basketball, I would go to Grapeland and officiate in that old airplane hanger. I remember seeing Trenia as a freshman playing on the varsity. She was amazing. I knew then when she was 14 years old how good a player she was going to be and she did not prove me wrong. One of the best high school girls basketball players Iā€™ve ever seen. BTW, That was also when Grapeland had Tony Jones, who went on to play football for UT in the Houston Oilers. They won the state championship in basketball, I believe, in 1987. There were some serious talent down in Grapeland in the late 80s. That was also when Grapeland had Tony Jones, he went on to play for UT and the Houston Oilers.
