  1. So now the game and the associated thread are so epic, we have a thread about the thread about the game. God bless David Smoak!

  2. I'd say King and Vallery together have been equally important in how diverse our offense has become. Both are great offensive minds that I think benefit from one another but picking up Vallery was huge for us. We've come along way from the early King era (2004-2007) days where the passing game only consisted of PA pass, then throw up a post or go to Malcolm/David Robinson/Travurus Brown and hope they grabbed it. Then 08 and 09 came. These years still had a little 04-07 flavor to them but the difference now was, we were seeing the spread more and more. You started seeing actual WR corps instead of just the main WR involved in the gameplan. Carey was the main guy of course but you also had Aaron Hollins and Pete Robertson. But as dangerous as Aaron was with his legs, Longview still didn't have that QB whisperer on staff that AJ really needed. So, in comes 2010. Vallery's first year. Pete Robertson at QB. This is the year that you really started seeing the WR corps in spread form between Bubba Poole, Tomlinson, EHawk and DT Jackson. We didn't light it up through the air that year although better than past years but you could tell the direction the program was going in. The very next year, Bivins Caraway breaks Longview's single season passing record. Eric Hawkins goes for 994 yards which at the time, was unheard of by a Longview WR. Since then, between Bivins Caraway, Chumley, Haynes...every Lobo QB record in the book has been shredded. Not to mention WR and TE records. And it still hasn't effected our ability to run the ball. Heck we are hitting the record books there too lol It's really the most unique offense that I've seen out there. I'm not kidding, seems like I see at least one new formation or play design every week. S/O to our players for remembering all of these formations man. Even bigger S/O to the coaches for being able to teach it in a way that they can retain it. They run everything from 3TE I to 5 man wide.

  3. 1. Coaching The coaching is top notch, and there is low turnvover at Longview. Coaches come and they stay, I mean Coach Wilson (RBs coach) has been at LV since the 70s. Many others have been at LV pretty much since King became HC. We also keep everything in house when promoting a position. No need to hire outside when you already have good coaches on staff who already knows how the program operates. I'm not a big fan of the coaching staffs at the other ETX bigs, namely Lufkin. 2. A solid connection with the 3 main MS Cant build a house without the foundation and our foundation is as strong as it gets. The MS coaches and athletes are very connected to the HS coaches and players so everyone already knows what is expected once they get to HS. 3. High numbers A solid coaching staff mixed with a solid foundation almost certainly means numbers will be high yearly. Depth is always important and LV has plenty of it. This is an area JT lacks in alot. 4. Willingness to adapt to the athlete This is a big one. We don't force a system on players, we put them in best position to win. Goes back to what you said earlier, we are willing to adapt and change over time depdnding on the situation. Alot of the problem at Lufkin is lack of evolving. Their offense for the most part is the same as it was 10-15 years ago and hardly ever changes over the course of a season. 5. The talent and tradition No matter how good a staff is, you need the horses. Longview has a rich soil of talent that other places simply dont have at the moment whether they wanna admit it or not. And from 5 years old, they wanna be Lobos. 6. The facilities Nothing like having great resources to keep the players engaged. LV has the best facilties of any ETX big school and the community and school board is always willing to keep it that way. Lobo could use more seating but its still one of the more beautiful stadiums in ETX and well kept. 7. Lobo Nation and Alumni support To keep it brief, may be one of the most important things on this list. Its hard for anyone to accomplish anything without support and there's plenty of it in LV.

  4. Have any of y’all seen their game film from the Winona game last week? Looked like Bells did just enough to win. Winona took a punt return and a kickoff to the house on them. Defense was just good enough to keep their RB’s in check. Bells backs are avg. size, no frills north and south backs although they do run some toss sweeps and a hand off that goes to their slot back that goes off tackle. They like to run a QB sneak a lot which Winona let them clack off 5 yards or more each time they ran it. Their backs do a good job protecting the football in traffic but have limited vision of the field when doing so. They have zero break away speed. Some of our DL and all of our LB’s and DB’s are more agile and faster. They’ve got some butterballs on their OL but our speed up there should trump that. I don’t want us to overlook them cause they’ve managed to make it to round 2 but I think our defense is not going to have much trouble with their one dimensional offense. If we force them into 3rd and long situations they’ll fold up like a lawn chair. Our spread is definitely going to give them fits. Winona’s QB isn’t #8 and Winona’s RB’s aren’t #5, #7, or even #27. Our offensive producers should have big nights if firing on all 8! Probably another 400+ total offense kind of night. I think our boys have gotten a taste and are ready for seconds! GO GET SOME JACKETS!

  5. I think King is one of the best coaches in the area. He has turned Longview into an absolute monster. Are there games we should've won that we lost? Of course. We're not gonna win every one we play. He's made some bone headed decisions, just as the players have made some bone headed decisions. As Quick said, that 2010 ending will forever haunt my memory. Longview should've gone to State that year, and I fully believe we would've won it with our brand of play over Steele. 2017, I think we play closer to Cy Fair than Midway, but we'll never know because of a certain individual's mistakes throughout that contest. We've been on the edge of greatness ever since he took over. 2011 is another one, that I think we beat the eventual State Champions 9 out of 10 times we play them. I don't think we win state in 2013, but that team was better than the team we lost to and I think that team was better than that 3rd round exit they suffered. I think JT's issues are their talent goes up and down so much, and really, you will never be able to sustain a winning program with just 30 players on the side line on this level. Lufkin, I honestly think it's pure coaching. The lack of talent across 5A in East Texas is staggering to me, and I don't mean that as a knock. There's a player here or there, but Sulphur Springs/Jacksonville/Mount Pleasant/Pine Tree etc etc it's just tough from a talent perspective. I'm hoping PT sticks with their coach cause at least he seems to be guiding them in the right direction. Marshall has seem to come out of their funk, but I still have hesitation about them on a state level. They're on the right path, but I don't particularly think this year's group was ever as good as they wanted it to be. But their coach, if he stays there, can build something nice. But I just don't think they face anyone in district play that prepares them for what they're going to face on the state level come playoff time. It's all cyclical though. I'm sure our time, at some point, to have a poor season will come. Definitely don't see it happening next season though with the talent coming back and the drop, as long as King as coach.

  6. Not sure how to post this full link so I just took a screen shot. Good to see this young man doing well. Since it’s Joaquin week, some may remember our loss in Joaquin when one of our best broke his ankle. This was him. Pick 6 of 29 and 75 yards along with 7 tackles. Good to see 2A players have success at the next level.

  7. Actually you haven’t. That is part of the offensive consistency issues. They are better than what they were 2 years ago, but they are still average on their best day.

  10. Don't confuse me with someone that gives a rip! Hard to prove a point with a few still frames and some yellow circles. However, I'll play your game here! The first frame shows Waskom defender at least 3 yds. behind the EF receiver. Then in subsequent frames it looks like Waskom defender proceeds to cross the face of EF oncoming receiver and make contact with him. You would be more apt to prove that the Waskom defender impeded the progress of the EF receiver and get flagged for PI in that series of images! The Waskom defender was completely out of position and would have never been able to make a defensive play on #5 anyway! The question I have is why are you bringing this up? To my recollection Waskom won this game so why not be a gracious winner and move on, or should I go with my gut answer on this one! Waskom didn't take care of business when they needed to, EF did! Waskom out.....EF in.... DEAL WITH IT!

  14. This is true. As a matter of fact, if you go over to SH and watch them....their offense, while not as diverse, is replica of what is being ran at LV. Iform and everything.

  15. Also under the King Umbrella is John Berry who has built GW into a state ranked team... and groomed Johnny Louvier who had taken the reigns at Spring Hill that is showing some promise.. KING has definitely proven to be a great leader on the sidelines and that has had a trickle effect on many people that work under him. I DO believe he would be the first to remind us that he couldn’t do it without them either! Go ‘BOS! Go get em Spring Hill!

  16. That's a very good point. A lot of people have made the arguments that we face easier opponents than teams in the 80s/90s did. And that it's easier to make the playoffs with the 3-team and eventually 4-team format because "back in the day if you lose 1 game, you could be at home come playoff time". But other teams in the area haven't seen the success we have, even with the "easier" opponents and "easier" playoff format. Lee was good for about 4 years (three straight semi-final games, the last one ending in a state championship) and Lufkin was a top team in the state for 5 years (1 state championship, 3 other semi-final appearances from 01-05), but both of them have struggled to make much noise in the postseason. Dunno why- we see Lufkin play Longview closer than anybody year after year, match them with speed and talent, and they can't get out of the 2nd round, or 1st some years.

  17. I dunno if kingwolf I still around, but I remember him saying in 2005 that "Longview won't ever win state until they groom QBs they way they do RBs". It was an uphill climb, but eventually it happened.

  21. This is the sort of thing that defines greatness in just about any field: the ability (and willingness!) to grow, change, evolve and adapt. I believe that, given his druthers, King's wants to just line up in the Pro-I and run the ball between the tackles 40-50 times a game, control the clock, and win most games by a score like 21-0. But instead of being hidebound to tradition and personal preference, King understands that a system must be tailored to its personnel, NOT the other way around. What's going to be fascinating to see is how the offense continues to change with time. Not to get too far ahead of ourselves, but looking at the JV, Frosh, and middle school squads, there's a LOT of athletic and talented kids coming up. I look forward to seeing how the Lobo attack continues to progress, and find creative ways to put playmakers in a position to make plays.

  26. Especially after years and years of 1937 being thrown around and constantly being told that we'd never win the big one (all of this mostly coming from fans of programs currently sitting at home). We deserve this. Its our time. And its only the beginning. More good times coming in the future.

  27. Folks we have been privileged to watch historic games and seasons under John King. Y’all should have been watching 82 through 96 and then some. I remember when making it to the second or third round was awesome. I remember beating Highland Park like a drum then getting robbed against Plano. Other that that we just couldn’t go very far. 3 state championship appearances and 2 semifinals in 11 years. That was what dreams were made of back in the day. We are blessed. Thank you Coach King and company.

  30. I really don’t understand why these kids do this. This kid is Kendall Sheffield 2.0. Really likes a in state program throughout the entire process, then goes out of state at the 11th hour. Then after a year is already trying to leave. This happens more often then not to Texas kids who leave it seems like. Sheffield and Carter would be used as examples from here on out if I was a recruiter.

  31. Welp I'm hopping on the LOBOS bandwagon for the remainder of the playoffs since my team checked out in Bi-district. So I will not attend this beat down Longview is fixing to hand out I will start spending my gas money next week when the teams start getting better and actually give Longview a good matchup. 38. Beyond blessed no doubt. King has taken us to an absolutely unbelievable level out in the Pineywoods. Seeing where JT is, where Lee has been, what Lp just went through, not to mention the 5A programs, just gotta enjoy the run as long as possible. Never thought we’d see something like what we’re experiencing at Longview.
