  1. And wouldn’t it be a shame if around half the schools in the state played a normal football season with no disastrous effects from COVID? I’m ready to play. I have a senior twirler. This is my last chance to see her and her friends and classmates perform under the Friday night lights. And I don’t want to do football with the “social distancing” BS. Part of the greatness of Texas high school football is the atmosphere of a packed stadium. It’s gonna suck for those kids that have performed in front of full crowds for three years to look up and see the stands with people scattered apart. Enough is enough.

  2. Playing with no crowd? They do that already. It’s called practice. I get that there are some schools that don’t have the fan following for football that ours does. I don’t think any of them are represented here on SDC, but we’ve played some of them. I saw an East Texas school a few years ago bring less than 50 fans to a second round playoff game. I felt sorry for the kids. The kids that play for schools followed by folks here on smoaky are used to playing in front of loud rowdy crowds. Imagine the disappointment for the seniors to play in an empty stadium all year, never hearing the crowd roar when they come out of the inflatable tunnel, not hearing the cheers after a td, not getting to do the hug and picture party with their family after the game, and so on. If you allow bands and cheerleaders, what’s the point? Who are the cheerleaders leading? The band and twirlers are getting a glorified dress rehearsal. The suck factor will be tremendous. Our kids have been done a grave disservice by the people who pushed this giant fear campaign.

  3. I think this is going on across the state especially in liberal counties that want to shut down the economy before the election. The problem is much of the media was reporting that Governor Abbott was going to shut down the economy again, but it was based on an editorial published in the Houston Chronicle. https://www.houstonchronicle.com/opinion/editorials/article/Editorial-Gov-Abbott-must-act-on-shutdown-15405154.php . They want the economy to halt to make Republicans look bad so that they can save everything. They desire to destroy this country, and the way to do it is to over report numbers and hospitals being at capacity when in they are not according to those that work there. Now why would hospitals be doing this ? 1) They receive more federal aid when they deem illnesses and deaths as Wuhan related. Many hospitals were in the red, because of the ACA. This has been a boon to them financially to place them in the black. 2. The Democrat/Communist/Socialist/Fascists desire to have complete power and to build distrust against the GOP by saying they would have handled the pandemic better and all would be well. Not a single one of them has stated that they would have done anything differently than what President Trump has done. They were attacking him in the early stages for being a racist for many of his actions to curb the spread of the Wuhan. I honestly think that once this is all over we will see widespread abuse by the hospitals, doctors, and nurses for complying with the orders by administrators and local health officials. Think of how many people that you know. How many of them have the Wuhan ? I talk to on average 75+ people a day in person, and I have only heard of a mother and son whose friends elderly father died from it and one person that recovered from it. Yes, it is a topic of discussion. Let's take this to my relatives and personal friends. I know of two, with one of them being the son of one of my friends that I don't know. Both of them recovered in less than a week. I'm not saying this isn't real, but it seems odd to me. During flu season I always have at least 5-10 friends that are complaining about being sick or asking for prayers on facebook. Why ? The only one's I keep hearing about are celebrities or family members of celebrities that have died from it or had it. It doesn't make any sense.

  4. I guess I’m confused how this means no sports. Leaving it up to the districts makes more sense to me because not all areas of the state are being hit as hard. Now we just need the districts to realize it’s okay to allow the kids and their families to make the choice to participate or not. I personally don’t think any of the districts should shut down, but districts in Houston, DFW, San Antonio, Austin etc would make much more sense to have more restrictions than more rural areas. Don’t give in to the cowards that are pushing the cancel culture. Write and talk to your superintendents, board members, etc and tell them to take a stand for the kids and let them play!

Remember you bowed out of that thread with your tail tucked. Just can’t figure out why you keep bringing stupid stuff up. Dogs that chase cars are bound to get ran over. You’ve been ran over a dozen times at least

  10. I don’t have an issue at all with them ceding control. If counties, ISDs, or schools don’t take the field then so be it...let everyone who does fight it out for the state title...it might allow some schools go deeper than ever and some kids get seen that may otherwise get missed...

  11. Changing the name of the high schools will not be a burden on the tax payers. Tisd has at least $30,000,000 left over from the bond. Lee did not cost what they initially said it would cost. JT came in a couple of million dollars less than what they said it would cost. If Tisd ask the taxpayers to foot the bill, then I will vote no for every bond they ask in the future. Tisd has the money to pay for everything.

  26. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/texas-coronavirus-cases.html Probable cases and deaths count individuals who did not have a confirmed test but were evaluated using criteria developed by national and local governments. Some governments are reporting only confirmed cases, while others are reporting both confirmed and probable numbers. And there is also another set of governments that are reporting the two types of numbers combined without providing a way to separate the confirmed from the probable. The Times is now using the total of confirmed and probable counts when they are available individually or combined.

  27. About CDC COVID-19 Data Updated July 13, 2020 Confirmed & Probable Counts As of April 14, 2020, CDC case counts and death counts include both confirmed and probable cases and deaths. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/cases-updates/about-us-cases-deaths.html It is not my opinion. The CDC says that they count probable cases. This is a fact. Yes, these numbers are inflated and not accurate in the least.

  30. If you say that slavery was 50% of the reason for the war....then I would say that is more than a little.
    1 point
  31. Actually it wouldn't. It would prove that the Civil War wasn't about slavery. He stated that he would free all the slaves to prevent the war. Even by doing so it wouldn't because there were numerous other factors involved that I have already shown on here, but I realize some of you have short memories. You should remember that slavery was still legal in the United States so there wasn't a need to rebel. While slavery was an issue, it wasn't the main issue. Others were States Rights, they felt that the laws of the Federal Government were usurping their rights to run their states as the saw fit, another was the economic disparity between the North which was industrialized which helped them win the war because of railroads and of course the repeating rifle, they felt that Lincoln also was not their president as we see today with many blue states. Not a single electoral vote from the south went to support Lincoln. We are seeing that today with President Trump by blue states that desire to limit his power as well as their Senators and House of Representatives that continue to put forth bills to limit the powers that the President has. Texas was concerned also with the lack of the U.S. military presence in the State to protect it's borders. I would say that slavery was 50% of the reason why, but there were other factors as well. To simply blanket it as a call to end slavery which should have happened years before isn't 100% accurate, but that is how it is taught today. https://www.pbs.org/opb/historydetectives/feature/causes-of-the-civil-war/

  34. I just don’t understand how someone can claim to be patriot to the USA and support the memorialization of the confederacy. It was treason per the definition given in the constitution. They declared war against the USA. How can one claim to love this country and yet memorialize those that set out to destroy it??? Defending and celebrating treason. I don’t get it. As for the school names.... it’s NO ONES business but current students and alumni IMHO. The ones donning the uniforms and representing the school are the ones that count. Anyone else’s opinion is pretty irrelevant.

  35. Stupidity is condemning half of an entire nation over 150 years later. It was a different time and a different culture. Yes slavery is wrong, but not all of the south owned slaves or was pro slavery. Many southerners fought for their homes, their land, and their families and countrymen. This may blow your mind, but there were some good people that lived in the South during the time of slavery. Obviously, there were plenty of evil men as well on both sides. Those people are dead and gone and God has already judged them. Maybe we should never make statues for any man or woman, because we are all guilty of sin and wrongdoing or maybe we just happened to live at a time where things were culturally acceptable during our lifetime even if we didn’t agree. I think abortion is evil, but it is acceptable in our culture today. I hope there comes a time where it is illegal and people feel the same way towards it as they do slavery. 200 years from now they may be tearing down all of the statues of people during our time because they lived during the abortion era! The point is, if someone or something has to be perfect to have a statute or have something named for them/it, there should only be statues of Jesus Christ, because he was the only perfect person. I mean how much good does someone have to do to cover up their mistakes or the mistakes of their contemporaries to be honored or revered?

  37. One thing Lufkin ISD did this summer was spend $600K on new air conditioning filtration systems for every Lufkin campus. Similar to the same filtration systems used in hospitals and commercial airlines. They filter out toxins and germs at the highest level, circulating pure clean air back into the classrooms. A local A/C contractor did the work, so the school money stayed in our community. Great investment IMO.

  38. I thought the same thing about concussions and head injuries until I became involved. The fact is there are more head injuries in flag football. There are several studies that prove this. Knees to the head or falling on the ground is usually the culprit. With the new heads up way of playing the game it is much safer. The rugby style, or hawk tackle can be performed without pads. I have been involved in youth football now for 7 years in a small town and I know of two concussions in our community. One was before the kids were in pads and the kid hit his head on the ground , and the other was caused by a kid that was playing in the wrong age group. He was too old, and over the allowed weight to handle the ball. If leagues are regulated properly very few injuries happen in youth tackle ball. My guess would be there are almost as many in basketball. If anyone has watched a little dribblers basketball game most of them are like a tackle football game! The big problem is integrity, or lack of. Most coaches can't control themselves if they have a chance to play an illegal kid and get away with it. I think felony criminal charges should be put in place for these infractions.
