  1. Could be worse. We are having to fight off people offering a lot more money than $200k for a dang assistant coach. https://www.profootballrumors.com/2021/10/jets-jaguars-interested-in-josh-mccown
  2. I don't believe Center considered Horace graduating when they built this schedule two years ago. The good news is they will have an easier schedule in district. The bad news is this game will make the last 5 non district opponents seem like cupcakes. They have definitely had a "Rough ride" to start the year.
  3. I think most people are waiting for that game to decide if Rusk is “for real”. I will admit going 5-0 with this schedule does not mean much. I don’t think the game with Jasper will be an indication either except for the fact they are highly regarded by most folks. We will need to be competitive against Carthage if we want to be taken seriously. I will say right now regardless of the outcome we won’t be out coached. Coach Surratt is the best HS coach in the business and he has the rings to back it up but Carthage will not face another coaching staff better than Rusk. Coach Sitton is a defensive guru and our DC, Coach Ramsey, is unbelievable (he will be a big name in the near future). There is not a HS staff anywhere with better Offensive Coaches. Coach Harper would be a head coach upgrade at 90% of the schools in Texas and he turned down several offers this summer to stay. Coach (Josh) McCown will be coaching in the NFL once his kids are out of school. We brought in a young guy, Nick Smith, to coach the O-line and he is a flat out Hoss. We will have a good plan and be prepared but the kids will have to execute and like Mike Tyson said once “everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” Like I always say “to be the man you got to beat the man.” I’m glad we get the opportunity that most won’t get and even more don’t want.
  4. You are 100% correct about the running game. I know that is something they focused on in the scrimmage and will continue to as the year progresses. We have a deep and quality group of receivers but we will have to find a way to run the football successfully. Of course we’ve got a bunch of possession receivers not the 6’3 burners y’all trotted out on the field. I thought one of the receivers #9 was y’all’s stud edge rusher until I put eyes on #14. That’s a little unfair in my opinion.
  5. Tatum is definitely big on both lines and the offense looks explosive with multiple play makers. I will disagree about our QB getting “tee’d off on”. Sr. McCown (starter) threw 12 or 13 passes. The second play the protection broke down and he threw the ball away. He then completed his next 8 passes, including a TD, and barely had to move around in the pocket. I think he ended up 10-13 (including the throw away) for 150+ TD and no INT’s. Jr. McCown who also wore the red jersey threw the pick. Not taking anything away from your Eagles, you guys are loaded but we threw it around successfully and not because of the red jersey. It will take a few games to get people’s attention but slowing down our offense will not be any easy task.
  6. I am familiar with this process and there are two major variables that cause poor outcomes. The first is the parent, student or receiving school that knowingly breaks or bends the rules. The second is the sending school or a district executive committee that purposely tries to make certain a student is ruled ineligible. For as long as I can remember the State UIL executive committee has been very deliberate in trying to stop students who are moving for the wrong reasons. They have been so concerned with that goal that the guidelines in place hurt a lot of students who have legitimate reasons for moving. If a sending school or District executive committee claim or determine a student is moving for athletic reasons it’s hardly ever reversed at the state level. If a coach checks one box on the PAPF they can basically keep a kid from participating for one year. The biggest issue not being addressed is the coaches or district committees ruling out of spite or for their own competitive advantage. L I believe the UIL should put consequences in place for Coaches or District committees who rule a student ineligible that the State Committee reverses. Currently there are none so these folks can make these decisions without any repercussions. If a coach states a student moved for athletic reasons and the District Committee found they did not the UIL could make the coaches team in that sport ineligible for one year. If the district committee rules the move is for athletic reasons and the State Committee reverses the decision then the UIL should rule the teams of the coach and every member of the district committee who voted they were ineligible to be ineligible for one year in that sport. It may seem harsh but I guarantee more coaches and committees would be certain their position was correct before they made the decision. The parent and student is already at a disadvantage because they hardly know or understand the rules in place. The UIL should not continue to allow Coaches and Schools who understand or should know the rules operate without consequences. My two cents
  7. If the folks at DCTF are correct in their prediction of 10 4A then it will be the best 4A division 2 District in the State. Rusk will be a top 10 team. If Jasper and Center are better than the Eagles then Carthage will get some good games leading up to the playoffs.
  8. The $1.7 million is total extra curricular. The $1.1 is a “Program Intent Code 91”that is included within the “Function 36 Extra Curricular” PIC 91 is for salaries specific to that department like stipends or extra days it would not include a teaching salary.
  9. The detrimental effects would be for students, parents, coaches, school staff and fans. Financially, programs would lose outside revenue but those monies only help offset cost. There is not a HS football program in the State whose revenue covers expenses much less the expenses other athletic programs. School districts have athletic programs to enhance the students HS experience not to generate money.
  10. I'm a little concerned about the dragon's mentality right now. The last 6 quarters have been uninspired and sloppy. I'm glad Gilmer is on tap before district starts. I won't be suprised if they get a wake up call next week. I would assume having a losing record last year and not winning a playoff game in almost 25 years would keep a team grounded. They need to remember the Nacogdoches Dragons are not a team that strikes fear in any opponent.
