  1. I hear that C. Lewis gets today's start instead of Wilson. Anyone know why?
  2. I appreciate your thoughts, interesting reading. It’s funny how people watching the same team come away with such different views. I’m actually encouraged by the play calling and use of personnel. I’ll start with personnel. Longview has quite a few talented players on offense, McCray is one of them. But Johnson, Anthony, Fortson, Robertson, R McGee, Hunt, the Tight Ends, …are all effective. The group as a whole presents a significant challenge to a defense. It’s got to be tough to plan for all these weapons. BUT, they’re only a threat if used in the game(s). Also, injuries are an unfortunate part of the game. Coach King has quite a few players with game experience to call on as needed (e.g. K. Shaw injury). Finally, there may be other factors influencing playing time. Performance in the classroom and on the practice field for example. There’s also the locker room factor, I suspect some are better teammates than others and this may affect playing time (this thought comes from my own playing experience and not from anything I know about the Lobo team). Play calling – I’m a firm believer that offensive balance is an important ingredient to a long playoff run. It’s more challenging to prepare for and execute against an offense that has variety. This is not to say that a run dominate (or pass) cannot or do not win it all. But I’ve seen Longview stop some very powerful run (John Curtis) or pass (Evangel) teams in the past. I view the pass plays and trick plays as part of the success of Longview’s rushing attack. It’s these plays that must be defended which soften the defense which helps open the lanes. Also, what happens when Longview meets the defense that stops their rush? It’s out there. Lake Travis for sure, Guyer who knows. There is one thing you wrote that I agree with. This team could be more dominate. An improved passing game would do it. But I admit I don’t have any idea how to do it. McGee looks like a better passer but who knows. I’d still want the ball in Johnson’s hands much of the game. He’s capable of positive yards every time and protects the football.
  3. I wish the incident hadn't happened but it did. I wrongly assumed this weekend that it would be swept under the rug somehow. I feel badly for Mr. Berry. However, I'm very pleased that the LISD administration took appropriate action. Friday night I saw two Lobo players riding the bench for disciplinary reason(s). Now a coach is being held accountable for his unacceptable behavior. This is refreshing. Disappointing that the actions were necessary, but refreshing that LISD Leadership will address problems. Geez, I think I'm getting old!
  4. Watch the line of scrimmage; it's the key to Longview. The Lobos' D Line is B. Vactor and a handful of relatively smallish players. They were handled by Lufkin, T High and Allen (for one half). The linebackers and safeties haven’t (or maybe can’t) provided the necessary run support to compensate. I think the D line lost talent and leadership to graduation. Control the line then get the ball past the line of scrimmage with a combination of short-to-medium pass game and runs between the defensive ends. Forget trying to run around the Lobos D, too fast. Just my 2¢.
  5. I’m curious to hear your thoughts on what Texas High needs to do to win this game. I understand that home field is an advantage but that’s just not enough for a Tigers’ win over the Lobos. Using the first half of the Longview-Lufkin game, if you control the line of scrimmage you can beat the Lobos. Defensively the Panthers rushed five (and more with the blitz) and overwhelmed the Lobos O line. The skill players get a lot of press but the secret to Longview’s offensive success has been the O line. Coach King et al have been able to form an effective O line year after year without stars (Trent Williams is the exception). So if the T High defensive line can win the line of scrimmage they can control and/or stop the Lobos scoring machine. Witness the game against Lufkin, turnovers gave Lufkin a very short field. But the root cause of the turnovers was the incredible pressure applied by the D line and linebackers. Same story for the T High offense, win the line of scrimmage. Get the ball past the line of scrimmage and force the Lobo backers and secondary to make plays. Yes, they are athletic and have good speed. But they also over-pursue and shun the safe tackle in favor of the “Big” hit. Kram et al have commented on the Lobo team attitude, that they somehow think they just need to show up and the opponent will wilt. I agree 100%. The coaching staff must correct this because if T High can win the line of scrimmage the Lobos fragile psyche will break down and turnovers, mistakes, penalties and finger pointing will be the result. It happened at the Lufkin game and has carried over to this week. So what do you think, what will it take for the Tigers to win? Reasons the Lobos will win is too easy a question. Hopefully some of you have thoughts other than “Lobos win big” or “Tigers in a close one”.
  6. Here's one Lobo fan that thinks Coach King and staff have done an wonderful job. They bring a competitive football team every week, every year. I back through the years and I remember academic problems, attitude problems and even some sportsmanship problems (admittedly just my opinion as I wasn't on the team). I have some experience as a parent of several kids that participated in extra curricular activities at LHS. I think what Coach King (and Coach Collins before him) and staff have accomplished as to good behavior, improved academic focus and sportsmanship is remarkable. I'll take that any day, the good football team is gravy. It's (probably) not perfect, just a lot better. Among other things David Smoak wrote: "and the biggest problem I've always felt with Lobos fans was their incessant talk of winning a state championship". Twenty years of following Lobo football and I still don't know of anyone that fixates on a state championship. I do admit that I have a well developed ability to tune-out the obnoxious (for instance the woman sitting behind me at the Lufkin game!). But ok, I believe you. So I'll go on record as a Lobo fan and let you know that I don't care about the state championship. Give me a good Lobo-Maverick game or Texas High or Lufkin, REL, JT... If the Lobos were to win one, great! But I'll take what King and Company are putting out each Friday any day. Off topic, but anyone else wish Smoaky was still broadcasting? It's not quite the same listening.
