  2. We played it a lot growing up. Shoot, our junior high gym teacher (varsity fb D.C.) even let us play it once in a while for P.E. But that was the early 80's. Both of my boys & classmates played it at recess in elementary. Teacher told them it was too dangerous, play football instead. So they played tackle football for a couple days; until they were told they could only play 2-hand touch football.
  3. Behind the ball carrier yes is arm tackling & much easier for the ball carrier to break out of. Also easier to miss the ball carrier altogether.
  4. Dublin brought theirs when they played us several weeks ago, so I'm guessing they're legal? Might be up to the home school to allow them or not? Didn't matter, they never got the chance to use it.
  5. In a similar direction with the Worst Person To Sit By thread, what are the best quotes/comments/etc. you've heard coming from the bleachers? A few of my favorites are: "Call it both ways ref" "Got some home cookin' tonight" After a stuffed run "We need to throw it". Next play is an incomplete pass, "We should be running it" "We're getting out-coached" ...... and my personal all-time favorite "Gotta wrap him up"
  6. The guy who's on the Fox S.W. Football Friday app and keeps showing you new smack talk chat posts every 2-3 minutes. Instead of watching the game.
  7. Crawford (6-1)(4-0) @ Goldthwaite (6-1)(3-0). Both are 2A Div 1 teams in Dist 7. Crawford's only loss has been to 3A Tolar. Goldy's only loss has been to 3A Academy. Good rivalry, both teams are well-coached & both play with discipline and execute well. Most likely this is the district championship game. I've got Crawford by 6 - if they bring their "A" game. Thoughts?
  8. Yeah I agree if only about 40 total for 7th-12th that could be an issue. They would prob have to combine 7th & 8th into one team, and then make 9th-12th all varsity. Not ideal even for a 2A-D2, do-able but not ideal.
  9. If I remember correctly Mart has around 40 (someone correct me if I'm wrong); I know they only suit up 20 for varsity. Goldthwaite has 35 total for 9th - 12th. We have 43 total, suit up 21 for varsity and had a few injuries already. We're all doing good and are all Div1 schools. I wouldn't think 40 is all that bad for a Div2 school. The point I'm trying to make is that, yes numbers matter to a point; but the coaching, athletes, discipline, execution and attitude of the program as a whole count for more. IMHO. We played CV in the 2nd round last year. They seemed to have some exceptional athletes in terms of speed and agility, more than our team had. But their play was very undisciplined. Poor tackling technique, lots of missed blocking assignments, bad reads on D, couldn't shed our blockers, spent more effort going for the ball than tackling the ball carrier. That's my $0.02
  10. Alto in a close one. This should be one heckuva game.....
  11. Pretty much can't add anything new, but can agree with some things that have already been mentioned. One of the recurring themes in this thread so far is you gotta have the right QB - and that's true. Doesn't need that cannon arm, but does need to be accurate and completing the short pass is OK with a long one here and there. Also needs to be able to read the D and make adjustments on the fly (audible to a run/pass, know when to hand the ball off or keep it in read option, etc.). A good spread team has to be able to run the ball well, so they can take advantage when that D gets stretched thin. The O-line also has got to step up their blocking. A lot of our formations don't use a TE, and in addition it's only the QB & one RB in the backfield, so those big guys gotta move some bodies out of the way. As trueblue 82 mentioned, you don't need a ton of speed. At least at the smaller school level, good technique and good execution and smart play will go a long way. World-class speed doesn't hurt though, LOL. But when it's all said and done, you still need the right kids to run it. If they can't get it done physically or mentally, gotta use a different scheme. Trueblue, that game was one of the most memorable "nail biters" I've seen. Two completely different offensive schemes, but nonetheless, the teams were an even match. Came right down to the last few plays to get a winner.
  12. I could agree with 1 & 3. Maybe 2 & 6 if I really stretched. 4 & 5 wouldn't keep me from playing Clarksville or any other team; and shouldn't keep anyone else from playing them either. About the band, though. Last year, 2nd round of playoffs C-ville band played pretty much the entire half time. Literally about 2 minutes left on the clock when they walked off the field. Kinda points toward #1 on that list, a little bit. Ref's were cool about it and gave our band time to do one song/movement. Felt bad for the band kids. My oldest son was a senior & in the band. We ultimately had the last laugh though, hung 6 TD's on them.
  13. Agreed. That's close to our non-D this year. 2 teams we felt fairly confident we could beat, 1 that realistically could go either way depending on how OUR TEAM plays and 2 that we knew beforehand were going to be super difficult but force the kids to dig really deep - and will improve their game even if we lost.
  14. The trick is to schedule a non-dist that's just hard enough to toughen the kids up (physically & mentally), challenges them to take their game to another level and provide some character-building. Yeah, 5-0 is nice if they're close, but a loss or two (while you don't want that) won't hurt you in playoffs if the kids learn from those losses. A cream-puff non-dist does nothing for your team and being grossly over matched every game, a'la Clarksville, also does your team no good - in fact makes things worse. Now you're dealing with possibly more injuries than usual and team morale that's probably in the toilet. We all know scheduling the perfect non-district is much easier said than done, but this team's non-dist is ridiculous.
  15. Teague by 21. Would prefer to see West win it but I don't believe they have enough for Teague. Wouldn't bother me if West proved me wrong, tho.....
  16. According to Maxpreps they ended up 5-7 last year. Thinking back I remember their record being a couple games away from .500 prior to playing them. They won their 1st round playoff game & then lost to us in 2nd round. I remember thinking they played a tough non-dist & their dist was easier. They had a lot of speed, but didn't execute well. When on D, they seemed more interested in going for the ball than tackling properly. Seemed to have athletic players but maybe coaching issues? We ran the ball down their throat all night & used that to set up the pass here & there. But that was last year. Maybe coaches philosophy to toughen kids up, but went too far with it?
  17. Tenaha by as much as they want. Ya it will be a fun night for the subs, but also some good reps. Gotta make sure the reserves get some reps now & then. I once heard a saying that went like, "Your backup is only one play away from being a starter...."
