  1. With my kids all graduating from BV, and my boys having been on their football teams, would love to see them get the upset W. After a rough start they're playing better the last few games; they graduated a lot of talent & experience the past couple years, and I think it's taken them a while to put the pieces in the right places. If they can kick it up a notch tonight I think they have a chance. Can, or will, they? That's the $64K question. Regarding making a pick, I'm leaning the same direction as you, Panther. Record and stats definitely point to BE as the clear winner. Heart says BV squeaks out a close one; head says BE by a couple scores. BV has surprised folk before, hope they can do it again.
  2. I have kids that played football and also were in band, plus daughter was in color guard. Enjoyed watching both. I'm all for the bands playing during the game. Like other have said, it adds to the atmosphere of the game plus it's the only time they get to play besides band competitions. The only time I've ever seen a coach complain about a band was our coach, when our band played while we were on offense (director had no concept of football - he was only there for one year IIRC). Before I went to competitions I thought they would be a snooze fest; I was wrong. Probably has something to do with whether or not your kids are performing, but I was impressed with what a lot of the schools could do. I have seen Alto's band at a couple playoff games, and they are excellent.
  3. I saw this in the Waco Trib regarding why these two schools, that are so far apart, played. https://www.wacotrib.com/sports/high_schools/high-school-notebook-for-la-vega-mart-success-means-hitting/article_db83330c-855f-5c03-b8a4-95e6ebb2e753.html
  4. We used to play east TX teams the years we went a few rounds into post season, but not for the last few years. Still, I keep tabs on a few of those teams just to see how they're doing, more-or -less for curiosity. With the exception of maybe a few "powerhouse" teams I would not be inclined to bet against Joaquin. We only played them once (post season) while my kids were in school, but I was impressed with what I saw. Looked to be well versed in the fundamentals and a very disciplined team - reminded me a lot of Crawford. Even though sometimes lacking in physical size depending on the opponent, a group of kids that can punch above their weight. They did not have a complicated offense then, but didn't need it based on how well they executed. We were damn lucky to get out of that game with a 1 point W. Lots of fun, and even entertaining, smack talk on this thread, but in all seriousness if I were a coach I would definitely take these guys seriously. My $0.02.
  5. D1 looks reasonable to me. Might swap SS and SA, but other than that pretty good. Gut tells me to keep an eye on Shiner, but really not much separation (if any at all) between the top three. Not that up to speed on D2, but throwing my support behind Mart. Waco-area team with dedicated players and a top notch staff.
  6. Cameron Yoe Rockdale Crockett Lexington Bremond Teague Lorena Diboll Grandview Franklin Mart
  7. Love the comments regarding the coach. Right on point.
  8. Agree, and to go a step further, repetition is what makes you react to certain situations with instinct or reflexes rather than having to think about it. Now back when I played they probably went too far the other way, at times, with endless taking people to the ground, etc. However, there has to be a certain amount of repetition to get the kids where they'll position themselves properly for a block/hit/etc. If it's not instinct, they're going to be out of position/bad form/no leverage/etc. This is why we see such sloppy tackling these days. I would venture to say that 15 min of contact a week may ultimately do more damage than good in the long run, for the reasons I have stated above. Or there are going to be a lot of guys breaking tackles left & right and getting abnormally huge chunks of yardage.
  9. I was disappointed to see this go away for a while. Glad it's been resurrected.
  10. Weak schedule? NO. Weak district? Yes. Every team on Mart's non-district schedule went 2 or more rounds into playoffs (Bosqueville 2, Holland 2, Franklin 2, Riesel 3, Refugio 4). Not exactly cupcake teams. Then in post season Grapeland, Muenster, Falls City. Again, no cupcakes there. A blanket statement that Mart played a flat-out weak schedule is pretty far off. Maybe a relative term would have been better. As in "Mart has played a weaker schedule than Gruver," and that's probably up for debate depending on who you talk to, but wouldn't ruffle feathers nearly as much. I personally don't know much about the teams on Gruver's schedule so not saying who had it tougher, but Mart def did not have a weak schedule. Anyhoo, this will all get sorted out in 7 1/2 hours. Get #7 Panthers.
  11. You are correct sir. Nothing against 2A West Texas, but definitely not on the same level as 3A Franklin. Although WT, did make it to the quarters in 2A, so that says something for them. Maybe should have said lost to one good team and one really, really good team lol. Go get #7.
  12. Identical records, both have lost one game to good teams. I've got Mart 35-21.
  13. They're mostly a split back veer team now but have seen them go straight-T occasionally. Referring to varsity/jv levels.
  14. My sons youth football team, early on thru 5th grade year, ran it maybe half the time along with wing T. That was our HC's fav offense. They learned the straight-T (he called it full house T) first. Son was the fullback, he loved it.
  15. Offering up a score prediction, and one that suggests a fairly close game, is not dishing it out. It's simply stating who I think will win and by how much. Asking the "who are you playing this week" question is much closer to dishing it out. No problem going around about the score of THIS game, but you're the one who went off topic and drug another school into it. Seems like my score prediction got you a little butt hurt to go there, or maybe just the fact that I don't agree? Let's let the kids play tonight and that will decide who says what on here.
  16. I'm not going anywhere. I don't gloat when we win and I don't make excuses when we lose. I can eat crow with the best of them, done it many times lol. You be sure and do the same if the outcome doesn't go your way. It's funny, I just saw this thread and thought I would post my prediction, along with the others, based on the understanding I have of both teams and be on my way. I never expected to get into a back-and-forth for this long. Plus I don't believe I'm the only one here who has predicted a Mason win. And yes, we're enjoying round ball season along with all the other 2AD1 schools except four of them. If I had a nickel for every time someone asked that question on these forums...... We're not your opponent tonight so whether or not my kids school is playing or not is irrelevant to this thread. No need to get personal just because a guy has a different opinion - shows a lack of class. With that said both teams are very impressive and I hope it's a good game with no injuries. Best of luck to both.
