  1. Read it again Eagleborn. You posted something straight from the LNJ and didnt give them credit until you thought they messed up...which they didn’t. TIt says the Davis twins are utility players
  2. Hughes Springs will win where it counts the most . . . . . in the classroom. LOL j/k
  3. Did anyone catch the premiere of the UFL last night? The Las Vegas Locomotives beat the California Redwoods, 30-17. I watched the game after I got home last night, and I must say that the quality of play far exceeded my expectations! It was actually a really close game until later in the 4th quarter when LV pulled away. The second game will be Saturday night, I think between the Florida Tuskers and the New York Sentinels. It will be broadcast on HDNet, or at www.ufl-football.com. I really hope that this league succeeds. But, the only way that can happen is if people WATCH it.
  4. The old USFL HAD the TV contracts with both ABC and then-upstart ESPN. They were getting good ratings, and had decent attendance, particularly in cities that had either no NFL team, or the NFL team that was there was terrible. The Detroit, Denver, Memphis, and Birmingham teams had very good attendance. The mistake they made was when New Jersey Generals' owner, Donald Trump, and a few of the other owners decided to move the league's season to the fall and either go head-to-head with the NFL, or to force a merger. Neither one happened. Hopefully, this new version will not make that same mistake. I believe that another league CAN go head-to-head with the NFL, but they would need to be bringing in equal ratings (to the NFL that is) in the spring/summer first.
  5. Okay, the UFL and the New USFL are NOT the same thing. The UFL, which is the new four-team league, will start up in early October and will broadcast their games on the VS Network. It will NOT be going head-to-head with the NFL. From what I have read, they will broadcast their games on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings. The only football they would be in direct head-to-head competition with is high school football which, as you know, is KING here in East Texas. lol The New USFL will be in the spring time, just like the old USFL was. They will be bringing back some of the old teams. However, with only starting out with 10 teams, some will be left out. They have not yet officially announced the teams as of yet. For more info on this, go to www.newusfl.com, or www.TheNewUSFL.com, or, if you are on Facebook, look up the New USFL. Michael Dwyer is the guy heading up this New USFL. BTW, I am currently conducting research and am attempting to analyze why spring and summer football hasn't really succeeded as of yet. I mean, if we love football so much, why don't we show love for the spring and summer leagues as well? Or is it that we only love our football in the fall? Message me with your comments on that, or email me at [email protected].
  6. Having worked at SA for a few years, I know the school pretty well. Coach Clay is THE best choice! Coach Barnes is a great, young coach, and will be great head coach material in a few years. They passed on Clay a few years ago. I hope they don't make that same mistake again.
  7. I think one of the big reasons coaches try to get the teachers to pass their players is because of the pressure to win. This is an issue that should be directed not only to coaches, but to students and their parents/guardians, as well as the "fans" of these teams. The old saying is that "winning isn't everything." Now days, the saying is "Winning is the only thing." I can understand that mentality at the professional level and, to a certain extent, the college levels. But, at the public education level, we should be teaching education first, sportsmanship second, competition third. Before we put all the blame on the coaches, let us sit back and examine ourselves first.
  8. Our prayers are with those families who have lost loved ones in this horrible ordeal. I would also like to send out prayers to the ones who were critically injured in this accident. None of the survivors of the wreck are out of the woods by any means. If I am not mistaken, the people in the other car were from San Augustine. Please pray for their recovery, both physically and mentally, from this accident. God bless them and their families.
  9. I have heard he is bringing Clay back and there is a possibility of Little returning as well. Not real sure if the basketball coach from that time would return as he is now an assistant coach with SFA.
  10. Graves is from the Carthage area, I believe. From what I understand, when he was let go in SA, he applied for the AD/HC job at Carthage and wasn't even granted an interview. There were many reasons for him being let go at SA. Money being one of the main reasons. Another was that he supposedly resigned at the beginning of the season (effective when the season was over), then tried to withdraw his resignation after they won state. The school board held him to his resignation.
  11. I look at it this way. If someone wants to be a good football player, then they need to keep playing. But, the likelihood of these kids making it in professional sports is highly unlikely. Therefore, the academics become extremely important. The average athletes' career ends around age 35 or so. But, what if an injury sidelines their career. Remember Mike Sherrard, wide reciever for the Cowboys? It does happen. The students need to take academics more seriously because, no matter who they are or how good they are, they won't be able to play football/basketball/baseball/etc. forever. Just like an athlete becomes a good athlete by continuing to play, a student becomes a good student by continuing to study. If a basketball player is having trouble with his free throws, he practices making free throws. If a student is having trouble academically, then they need to find the self-motivation to study harder. We need to go back to the way it was when I was in school. If you failed the 6 weeks, then you were out for 6 weeks. If you failed the final 6 weeks, then you were ineligible the first six weeks of the next year. We have to teach these kids three things: 1. Life is not always fair. 2. You can't always get what you want (great song). 3. In order to do the things in life you want to do, you're going to have to do things that you don't want to do. I struggled in school myself. Once I decided to get off my lazy bum and start studying, I became more self-motivated. For a while in high school, all I made were C's, D's, and F's. My last two years, I really buckled down, and ended up gradutating on time and going to college. While in college, I made the Who's Who list, the Dean's List, the President's Honor Roll, and the National Dean's List. I started doing that when I came to the realization that I was responsible for my own learning. Besides, nine times out of ten, the best athletes are usually the smart ones because they will know exactly what to do on the field/court almost all the time and know how to react in the tough situations.
  12. SA, if the Wolves win, they are not necessarily in the playoffs. If the Wolves win and Hemphill win, then Hemphill will go because they have the tie-breaker. If it's a two-way tie, then they look at the head-to-head meeting. The only way they go to a point system is if it is a 3-way tie, which if SA and Hemphill both lose, it will be.
  13. That Jefferson-Daingerfield Quarter Finals game in 86 was good, but I think Jefferson had it locked up. That was the only team I ever saw take Johnny Hurndon AND Steve Stutsman out of the picture. I would say my fondest memory, as of right now, were Daingerfield's seasons from 83 to 85. Alot of GREAT players were on those teams. Meeting Gladewater in the playoffs four years in a row. In 83, D'field smoked them 51-0, but in 84, they FOUGHT to a 27-27 tie in which Daingerfield won on penetrations (they didn't have overtime in high school back then). I have a DVD that highlights Daingerfield's seasons from that time, and quite a bit of it is that 84 game with Gladewater, and my heart pumps everytime I watch it. Also, beating Southlake Carroll in the Regionals in 1989 when everybody thought they were unstoppable. That was pretty awesome!
  14. I know Thomas Everett went to Daingerfield, Baylor, and ended up playing for the Steelers, Cowboys, and Bucs, and that he was recently enshrined into the College Football Hall of Fame. But, I was kind of curious as to where he is coaching now.
  15. Chris Edwards and Tommy Stewart both started on the 1989 team that beat Southlake Carroll in the regional round of the playoffs. There are four other coaches I'm surprised nobody has mentioned, and they currently coach AT Daingerfield. Coach Cox - played on the 1968 team that won the state championship. Coach Lewis - played football and basketball there (won state in basketball in 1977) and also helped coach the 83 and 85 football state championship teams. Coach Weddle - was an all-district DB in the early 90s. Also, won a state title with San Augustine. Coach Burgin - he played there in the mid 90s.
