  1. What a game this will be (I think). PG has some absolute guys playing but lack depth. By that I mean they have studs and average kids. I have not seen Carthage play in person this year, but I have seen PG a few times. Some take always for what it’s worth. While I understand it was the 1st game if the year, PG offensive line struggled with Brock’s big DL. The OL for PG is undersized and the QB will be on the move frequently. Brock flat beat PG up front. I cannot think of a DL that PG has seen with that size and physicality since week 1. This could be a big problem for the Hawks on Friday. The QB can try to do too much at times, and I have seen him lose the ball multiple times in the process. Turn the ball over Friday, you get beat. Just get positive yards or throw it away to keep the drives alive. That being said, the QB and RB are dynamic and will make plays. The DL from PG is big, fast, and physical. They really seem to play disciplined and not over pursue. If PG wins I wouldn’t be surprised, but if Carthage pulled away in the 4th I also wouldn’t be surprised. Can’t wait for this one.

Can Gilmer stop Aubrey though? I’m genuinely asking - haven’t seen Gilmer all year, I’ve just heard their defense is really bad.

With the athletes Gilmer has, I assume they have some guys that can cover. So that leads me to believe that Gilmer is more susceptible to a running team.

If Gilmer has tackling problems, they will really struggle with Aubrey’s leading rusher who is a physical runner. I think he was Aubrey’s leading rusher last year too, but he was hurt during the game against Center.

Gilmer is a lot more athletic than Van. I think their defense is good enough to get a couple of stops and/or generate a turnover. Their defense has struggled with the run, especially when teams can run a zone read with an athletic QB. Van only had 40 yards rushing the entire game. Gilmer has a RB that is arguably one of the most explosive backs in 4a. He can torch any defense if he gets to the second level. I’m not trying to dog the Van kids, but just a poor effort all the way around with the turnovers and penalties. Aubrey will have to show they can throw the ball to stay in this game. Gilmer can score too fast throwing or running. It’s not so much I think they just shut Aubrey down, I just do not think Aubrey can score as consistently as Gilmer.

  3. Aubrey controlled the line of scrimmage defensively all night. Van just didn’t play well period. While Aubrey is a good football team, they cannot win a race with Gilmer. Hate to see Van’s season end with that effort.

  4. Its bad enough having to take a 60 point beating in the 1st round of the playoffs, but QC going to have to drive 2 hours one way to catch it. Tough break for those QC dawgs. Good news is you get an early start on basketball practice since the game is on a Thursday!

  5. SH defense is terrible, and they have not beat a team with a winning record all year. That changes this weekend. Both teams are coming off back to back losses, and SH and Bullard schedules look real similar in outcomes. SH lost to what I believe is an improved Gilmer team and PG, while Van lost to Bullard to end the year. SH in a shootout.

  6. Good morning folks, it’s Friday and unfortunately for the Gilmer faithful; they must face the music that is PG. Like them or not, they could be the region favorite after tonight’s game. Gilmer’s woes on defense is a dream scenario for PG and that offense. PG should get plenty of stops, and even a turnover or two to take control of this game by the 3rd quarter. PG wins in a 56-21 type game.

Didn’t realize Brock was down this year like that. Christian usually better than that but Gilmer has faced some hard hitters. I picked Pg but should be a good match.

Brock has lost to PG, Wimberley, and Gunter. I believe back to back to back weeks, I think they will be just fine. Just a gantlet of a schedule to start the year.

  8. Everyone wants to win, don’t be silly. Who goes out and doesn’t care if they lose, scrimmage or not? But, not the point, the point is this is two great defenses and I believe PG is better than Kilgore and light years better than Gilmer. In fact, I bet PG goes into Gilmer and beats them by 28+ without much effort. I’m not even a PG fan but may be in the stands to watch the Gilmer faithful empty out the home stands in the 3rd quarter.

Once again Gilmer was without its best player Tate!!! I can promise you PG hasn’t seen a team with a good offense. The only team that has an ok offense was the private school that caused PG some problems. With our schedule I think it has gave the coaches some good film to try to put together a game plan.

Once again, the only team you have played with a defense you lost!! When I watched Brock and PG, I was not impressed with PG offense early, but they put more points on us than Gilmer. Yea, I know the Tate kid didn’t play. We were in position to beat Gilmer when game got called (43-40 and we just got a turnover on Gilmer 30), and we couldn’t even score on PG. They didn’t even let their best RB carry the ball against us. Totally different world you are living in if you think PG defense isn’t going to keep Gilmer in check.

I know us fans our spoiled, but as a fan myself (not a "fair weather fan") we have a right to point out the obvious.  Our defense has been terrible.  Yes, we have played a tough schedule and we are 3-2, and just as easily could be 4-1.  As it stands, though, it doesn't look like we are improving.  That's not typical of former Buckeye teams.  That's got to change somehow.  Somebody definitely has to be held accountable whether it be players, or coaches.  I'm not pointing fingers when I say that, and neither is anybody else I don't believe.  Our defense has GOT to get better, period.  If it stays the way it is, an inordinate amount of pressure will be on the offense to score every (or nearly every) possession.  We won't be able to do that against the better defenses out there.  I just hope we get it figured out quickly enough to beat our next opponent, Pleasant Grove.  That game will more than likely decide the district championship.  That should be, and is, the overall focal point right now.

I was at the Gilmer vs Paris game before they called it due to weather,  and I was at the Paris vs PG game. I’m going to say it, PG is legit the best defense outside of maybe Carthage in that region. I feel like PG has always lacked a good secondary..until now. From what I have seen, Gilmer has a lot to fix if they even want to be in a respectable game with PG. I felt Paris was in good position to possibly have a chance to beat Gilmer when the game was stopped. PG really took the foot off the gas in 3rd quarter against Paris. We didn’t even see their best RB in that game..

  11. Brock is loaded up front. PG offensive line just got flat handled. QB play for PG left a lot to be desired. Very poor decision making, which you hate to see from a senior. This didn’t look like a disciplined PG team. The PG defense is very good, but it’s like they cannot run an offense other than wing T. All those athletes and very limited shots down the field. Just go back to the wing T, this spread stuff just isn’t your thing.

I think it worked out well for the best statistical QB in program history. Kid had almost 100 touchdowns from that boring offense. PG mauled folks up front on both sides from ‘17-‘19.  That’s the difference now.

Correct. PG also had a very big and athletic offensive line those years. Teams have adjusted to them as well, specifically ones with good coaching (Gilmer, Carthage, and Brock earlier this year). Also, that QB kid was a rare mix of talent, intelligence, and fortitude. Not saying the Johnson kid isn’t special, but that #10 was just a special dude… they don’t come around too often.

  13. Carthage wins, but PG is much improved even from midseason form when I watched them play Gilmer. The PG defense has played very well. Their biggest issue is going to be that PG offensive line…They play hard but don’t stand much of a chance against Carthage defensive front. Moving to the pistol has helped the QB a ton. He can actually have a second to see the field. PG will have to continue to roll him out frequently to get him out of the box in order to put together drives. PG skill players super athletic and can make plays, but that Carthage defense is the best they will have seen..ever. Carthage offense looked off, and if PG can get that same Carthage team that played last night, this is a respectable loss and just MAYBE a game. While I know this is one of the best defenses Carthage has had, I walked away from game last night thinking they were “beatable,” which is something I didn’t feel those dominant state runs..I know it was just one game I saw, but the offense looked flat for a game that I thought they would come out explosive as ever. Carthage by 14.

  14. Everyone forgetting Aubrey gave Anna all they wanted, and only lost by 5. It was early in the year, but still a great showing. I do believe PG getting out of the wing T/slot T and being successful in the pistol further complicates preparation for them. PG defensive line has been dominate last few weeks. If that continues I take PG in a close one. Either way, should be a fun game. Whoever wins should really enjoy it, because the following week you get Carthage. All good things must come to an end, unless you are Carthage, then they just keep going.

I’m pulling for the Hawks but what are their impressive wins to date?

I think Brock, Paris, and Van are good wins despite records. Brock took Hirshi to OT, lost by 9 to Wimbo, and played Gunter in a very close game, they will be fine in 3a d1, probably win region at minimum. Van beat Chapel Hill who is predicted to make a deep run in 4a d1. I know Paris is 2-8 but if you look at how well they competed in games this year.. even beating Van, I would even call that a good win. Their schedule (Paris) was brutal. I know they had a couple ugly losses early, but seemed to play better late.
