  1. That is absolutely not true. The community backs football in Sabine as much as anywhere. The stands are always full on Friday night and the people in Sabine ache to have a winning football program.
  2. I like Williams as a coach, and I think he is a great person. I don't think he is up for the position, though. It is my understanding, that the four internal coaches that were interviewed and are being considered are Bacon, Comfort, Grotemat, and Lamore. Grotemat is the head basketball coach. Bacon or Comfort would be a good choice. It's in Stacey Bryce's hands now, but word is, he'll probably choose from those four. You never know, though. Baker was a surprise. No one even knew he was on the radar when he was hired. (Except for the school board and super, of course.)
  3. Think they'd gimme a shot? lol
  4. Of the coaches already on staff, I personally think Comfort would be the best choice for head coach. Mount is the longest tenured, but I don't see him getting the job. Lamore either.
  5. If we're talking high school only, you have to mention Keith Gilliam from Kilgore (& Sabine). Rushed for 2775 his senior year and led the Dogs to the 4A D2 State Title in 2004. Everybody knew they were going to get a heaping helping of him, and still couldn't stop him. Played at Sabine his freshman and sophomore years, and still overtook E.D. Jackson as the All-time leader in rushing yards at KHS.
  6. I personally would love to see Roger Adams get the job. I played for him at Kilgore back in the 80's, and can tell you that he is the type of coach that these kids would run through walls for.
  7. I hear that he is retiring and taking a job out of state so he can draw his pension and still coach. Pretty smart, actually. Regardless of what you read here, Jerry Baker is very respected in Liberty City. He and his wife Tina have been an asset to the staff here, and Sabine's kids have certainly benefitted from their service.
  8. I hear that Baker has resigned.
  9. Winning (just like losing) is born from habits. I believe they can win with Jerry Baker. He and I have our differences, but I've told him on more than one occasion that I believe he is the right man for the job. Sadly, all the football kids at Sabine have ever known is losing. For the most part, the kids have the right attitude and are willing to work towards winning. Some early season success would go a long way towards turning it around. Numbers has always been an issue at Sabine when it comes to football. Where schools the same size are turning out 70+ kids for football, Sabine is lucky to see 40 from 9th-12th grade. Of course when grades come out, that thins them even more. As a direct result, talented freshmen and sophomores don't have time to develop with their age group before being tossed into the fire. Turnovers the last couple of seasons has been the Achilles heel of this program. There have been several games they were in late, only to turn the ball over and give it away. They have dominated teams in total offense, only to lose the turnover battle. Jerry Baker can get it done. I just hope he stays long enough to enjoy the fruits of his labor. I'm not saying he will leave for greener pastures, but there have been rumblings about him retiring soon.
  10. Way to go, Dogs! First basketball playoff win in over 30 years!!
  11. I had the privilege of playing for Roger Adams in Middle & High school,(as well as being taught by him in the classroom,) and have known him my entire adult life. He has been a coach/teacher for over 30 years. If there is anyone that deserves to benefit from any existing "loophole" that would afford him a few more bucks a year based on time of service, it's him. This is ND's loss. The program and the kids there were lucky to have him. I only wish my son had had the opportunity to play for him. Having said that, I also know Kenneth Morris and Steve Mulkey that worked on Roger's staff at Diana. Either one of those guys would be a good fit for that program.
  12. I remember seeing the same bashing of Sabine last season for hanging 100 on an opponent. Let it go, people. White Oak is just that good this year. They can't help the fact that OC isn't and happens to be in their district. It's part of life. You don't want them to beat your team? Get better! Come up to their caliber. You can't expect the good teams to play down to keep from hurting Little Johnny's feelings. It's varsity sports. If your kid can't handle tough defeat, work harder. Get better. Or get out of organized sports. They'll get their participation award at the banquet at the end of the year. Congrats on the great season, White Oak. Represent East Texas well in the playoffs! Way to play with character, Ore City. Learn from it. Get better. Give it back to them next chance you get.
