  3. Bradenton, Florida - A high school coach from Texas has canceled a game with the financially troubled Bradenton Prep team, claiming 7 of the 23 players are too old under Texas rules to play. Redwater High School's football coach, Jeff Stine, says Texas University Interscholastic League rules say older players must have turned 19 after September first to be eligible to play. Bradenton Prep's game organizer, Todd Robison, says only one of the seven players, a wide receiver, is overage to play under Texas rules and that information had been disclosed to the Redwater High School team. Robison says the player is 19 years and seven months old. According to Robison, they had not begun to validate all the players ages when Stine canceled the game. Redwater High School Coach Jeff Stine says he grew concerned about the players' eligibility after learning four players on another Texas team were injured last week during a game with Bradenton Prep. Stein says two of those players are out for the season. "They'd be playing against men," says Stine. He adds, "How can I look their parents in the face if they get hurt and know I ruined their kid's future?" Stine says he did some checking on the internet and found seven players had played their senior year in 2008 and 2009. Stine says he found one player who played at St. Pete Catholic, two players from Sarasota High School, one at Riverview High School in Sarasota, two players from Bayshore High School in Bradenton and one player from Avon Park. Coach Stine says, "I feel like I was misled about the nature of the game and the team we were to be playing and I hate it that my kids will miss out on a game. However, I will not subject them to college-age players." Stine adds Bradenton Prep's "questionable ethics" diminishes the spirit and integrity of the game. Stine also says he does not trust the team's coach to validate their age, plus he says Bradenton Prep has no school or governing body to answer to if something happens on the field. Bradenton Prep's school was foreclosed on in July. The team also resigned in 2008 from the (FHSAA) Florida High School Athletic Association that oversees high school sports. "There is a reason there is an age limit on players in Texas and it's about safety," says Stine. Robison says it has always been Bradenton Prep's intention to play by Texas UIL rules. Robison adds Bradenton Prep's coach, Walt Williams, even offered to have Stine pull any players he is questionable about. "He (Williams) sees this as an opportunity to play his younger players anyway," says Robison. Despite Robison's assurance "there will not be any players on the field, who do not qualify under UIL rules," Redwater High School canceled the September 4th game in Gilmer, Texas. The game was to be a scholarship fundraiser. Robison says Bradenton Prep won its last two games in Texas this month, including a 55-0 shut out last week. "I regret Stine chose not to play. I apologize to Bradenton Prep. They've come all this way, driven 1,000 miles," says Robison. He adds, "Stine makes these claims without any proof." But Stine says he won't put his 15 and 16-year-old players up against a "mercenary team" and risk a career ending injury.
