  1. Gosh, where to begin? 1.Yep -we're in a tough district. The guys are working hard, but so is every other team... The coaches have proven they are winners and given time, will build a successful program. You do your job as a parent and leave the coaching to the COACHES. I am quite sure they know what they are doing. 2. If you think it's "human nature" to care about kids, you live in a dream world. There are coaches out there that don't give a rat's tail about the kids; they are all about the win. Checked the mirror lately? You seem to have your priorities mixed up. 3. Gladewater didn't have any Div I players. THAT, my "concerned parent" has MUCH to do with God-given talent. If a kid is THAT talented, they will stand out no matter where they are. College scouts are very skilled at judging and evaluating talent. If your child possesses it, they'll see it. 4. "Back in the day" is a bleacher creature comment. Quit comparing apples to oranges. The BEARS are working with the kids in the program NOW, not the kids in the past or glorified memories. 5. You say your kid "likes the coaches"...that's great. They SHOULD have a positive relationship. But your kid needs to be concerned with bettering himself as a player, and you should support THAT...not come here on an open forum to gripe about the system. Undermining the team as a whole because a kid hears momma or daddy griping creates a cancer that spreads. Let your KID play the game. It's HIS turn. 6. If you think every kid is going to play college ball...listen to the alarm clock and wake up. Ask a coach, any coach, how many kids actually make it past high school to play football. The statistics will obviously surprise you. That is by FAR the exception, not the rule. BTW, I believe most all of the coaches on staff DID play college ball, so I'm sure they know what it takes. 7. Lastly, if you're more concerned about the wins than the kind of MAN your child is being groomed to be, and district championships are your goal...then maybe you ought to move on down the road. True BEAR PRIDE backs our boys for their effort, attitude, and work ethic. If that isn't enough for you, I can only hope that your child learns it from his coaches, because it doesn't sound like he's getting that life lesson at home. 8. Oops, left one out. If you are so concerned, why are you asking this question on Smoaky? Go ask a coach where things stand. They are the ones "in the know"...To me, this shows what your "question" and motivation really is.
  2. In response to the poster from Gilmer who mentioned something about how "no one will play them...I bet Jeff has called your school..." (paraphrased), I'd suggest that Gilmer play UP, rather than down. If you are genuinely that talented, test your kids against a team "more equal"...has Gilmer played many 4A teams, or even a 5A? If your team is so frightening that no one will put you on their schedule, LOOK UP. There will always be a bigger team that will play you. I've seen many coaches that use this philosophy when scheduling. Play somebody better than you... see how well your kids handle tough situations and become stronger. It might not keep your W/L record quite as pretty, but it will prepare your kids. JMO
  3. Oh, and the only reason people refer to "last year" is that it was such a shock after so many people had acted like the path was already paved from Gilmer to the wherever the state championship was going to be played... Every team takes some slammin' on here, and we get to eat crow when we're wrong, too.
  4. hilarious!! When you let the announcer call the coach's win/loss record at each half (WHO does that?? I have been to games at every level, and even at 5A games I've never heard such preening), and your fans act like there's no reason to bother playing the game, you know you're gonna take some ribbing!! Somebody was just having fun with ya!
  5. Dang, Gladewater plays UP for all their games before district. They didn't give themselves a cakewalk to boost their egos. Instead they've been having to bust their butts! They're playing all bigger or "better" schools in hopes that it will prepare them as they enter district. I really haven't paid attention to who Lindale has been playing, but I know G'water hasn't been resting on their laurels. We're already battling injuries....but I see that things can get better for our Bears. Remember to develop and consistently have a "never say die" attitude, guys!! The wins WILL come...you are coming together and looking better all the time. Some of our mistakes have pretty much shot us in the foot at times, but with experience comes few errors and your hard work will pay off!! I'll take the heart of a player who is willing to bust his tail every play any day!! You can be whatever you STRIVE to be, but it takes commitment and butt-busting work!!We are proud of you, Bears....keep diggin' in and workin' hard!!! GO BEARS!!!!
  6. Just FYI---The reason I asked is it didn't sound good when someone asked about kids living with another family and was that being part of the program and tdsteele said something like, "if that's what it takes to give the kid a better future, then yes." I think that all coaches are in coaching not just because they love sports, but because they love kids. That doesn't mean that you can always remedy any situation, though. You can't just have them come live with someone else because their home life is crappy. If you did, then you'd need a school bus to drive to the grocery store or church and back. It's an admirable goal, but be ready for skeptics and critics with that type of thing. A mentor program is great. But when it involves some of the things others mentioned, you're going to have people question it. JMO.
  7. If this mentor program is indeed intended to help out young men (young women?) who are in a bad situation or unusual circumstances, then I think it is a program that can change the course of a young person's future. However, anyone on the "outside" of the situation also cannot be faulted for thinking it can also prove convenient for an athletic program at times. When it is one or more of your program's premier athletes that is living with a coach or a family other than his own, people are going to be skeptical. I am not accusing anyone, I am merely stating that having this type of program is why there are people who think something isn't quite right. The program overall sounds great, and I think that "adopting" a player and letting them know they are an important part of the team is also a good idea. But when "adopting" a player actually comes down to living with someone else, people are going to wonder. Is it legal? You say so, and I won't disagree since I don't have firsthand knowledge either way. It does answer questions that I've heard about the system in place at Gilmer and why some are always asking questions about certain situations. I'm only asking out of curiosity and not asking for names at all, but are there any female athletes that also live with a coach or another family also? I've no doubt Gilmer will roll this year and have another great season.
  8. I'm thinking it's all good either way. We win; kids will see that discipline pays off. GW may have some players riding the bench for that reason, I'm not sure anymore. If we lose; it's non-district and the kids can get a feel for playing together. I say GW Bears over the PT Pirates! LET'S GO GLADEWATER BEARS!!!!
  9. [ Ah yes! The typical Christian answer. Curse words are governed by PC now which we know can be too sensitive. PC is governed by the majority which must always be correct...right? Cursing in situations doesnt make you a bad person as you would have everyone believe. I would'nt think God judges you by whats PC] I'm sorry, strawberry, but who is the "we" that thinks "PC" is too sensitive? From looking back and reading the posts, I honestly believe that you may have a problem with Chrisitianity. It seems like you expect us to be "okay" with everything, and if we voice our opinion, likes, or dislikes, then we are labeled intolerant. Why can't we be allowed to simply think something is right or wrong? Other groups do. We can believe something or some action is wrong based on our faith, but that doesn't mean we are going to burn down a building, start a riot, or stir up hate and bigotry. THAT is not the foundation of Christianity. I am sorry if you have been burned by someone or some experience that has caused you to dislike a certain faith, but please do not lump all Christians together as PC robots that do not experience tolerance and understanding on certain issues, but not agreement or condoning of behaviors. The bottom line, however, is that there IS judgement. And I won't be the one judging. God will. And He won't be using whatever the nation or majority believes to be politically correct. He'll be using the words He left behind. I know I will fall short, but I will continue to try. Maybe one day you'll make the decision to as well. I do not mean to sound condescending at all. Just giving my opinion.
  10. The meaning is still the same when it comes to clean and unclean, strawberry. Just like the meaning of the cross is still the same more than 2000 years later. We do not speak or read Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greek. The point of the Word is that in your everyday world, if the word is considered unclean, or foul, you should not use it. I would think you would have mastered the subtleties of the English language enough to know what is considered tasteful and what is not. After all, Smoaky has guidelines on this website, does he not? You can easily be issued a ticket for public profanity, correct? I won't be drawn into an argument about what is or is not an "unclean" word. You just use your best judgement, and one day all will be made clear. We all make missteps; I make plenty of my own. I'm certainly not trying to be some holier-than-thou person pretending I'm without sin, because I'm not. I'm just happy that grace entered the world because it's the best thing that ever happened to me. I wish everyone in the world would take advantage of it because it's free and there for the taking. Some words are just a little "on the fence", I suppose, because some people find them offensive, others don't. To each his own, when it comes to that. I would just try not to use it around others if it might bother someone. They have the right to an environment where they (and usually their kids, if it's a game) don't have to hear something they consider profanity. That's just common courtesy in my book.
  11. Actually, it does indeed "measure their religious guidelines". If someone professes to be a believer, yet has a mouth that is full of trash, what does that tell others? That you supposedly believe one thing, but do not bother to actually act upon it and allow it to change or alter your lifestyle in any way? If anyone is truly trying to live a life that imitates that of Christ (although we all realize we fall short and need His grace consistently) then that person knows that it is not a free pass to speak and act however he or she might wish. The Bible speaks frequently about using your speech to uplift and edify others, to let no unclean words pass your lips, because it could cause others to stumble. In fact, God is more displeased with the fact that your speech would cause others to make the same mistakes in imitating you. There are many examples in the New Testament of how your speech is an outward representation of an inner commitment. And if you believe those words are true, then that IS REAL.
  12. All right, 44stack, quit stirring the pot... I don't think I ever said he wasn't a Christian, but a Christian usually doesn't act that way and do those things purposely and unapologetically...Knight does not seem to see anything wrong with his methods. I've seen enough interviews where the man himself states that. Those are not Christian values. Don't make it a "holier than thou" argument. All Christians fail. I didn't say I created the list of "do and do not's", but I DO know where you can find them. It is completely your choice to believe or not. Are you willing to bet your children's lives on it? There are a million hypocrites out there, but there are also millions of people trying to do their best to live according to their faith. It doesn't make them perfect; but it will make them saved, assuming Christ does indeed return. I'm betting my life on that reappearance. If I'm wrong, at least hopefully it will have made me a better person during my lifetime. But I'm not wrong. (To even say I doubt it would make my faith a joke, so I apologize if it sounds arrogant.) Being a Christian doesn't give you a free pass to sin all you want and repent on Sunday. Read the book of Romans in the Bible. We can't sin extra so that "God's grace might abound". I don't have any idea what's in his heart, I just know that Bobby Knight would never coach my sons, even if they were the top recruits in the nation (totally unlikely, of course) and he the most "effective" coach. Takes more than wins to make a man in my opinion. Just my two cents.
  13. "No, No, No, Danny"....those are choice words? Oh, like the "choice words" Jesus used in the temple... If that's how you define it, no wonder you and I can't seem to communicate. In fact, the majority of the time I can't follow your train of thought because you contradict yourself often and speak almost in riddles. This one at least made sense. Other times, one post degrades a type or style of coaching while the next extolls it. At least pick a side of the fence and stay on it.
  14. Dave- I do believe you've been corrected. And the different versions of the Bible do not change God's word, they just make it easier to read. Not many of us today read Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greek. Again, I am pleased and proud to see the coverage these great men are receiving due to their coaching ability and style. I understand that different people are motivated different ways, but if someone as intense as Brian Urlacher has a fire lit under him and the rest of the team looks just as intense, you must be doing something right. On a side note, Dave mentioned that he just wasn't motivated by one of his coaches. I'd just like to point out that truly talented athletes are also highly SELF motivated. Coaches direct, instruct, encourage, discipline, etc. - but the fire must be stoked from WITHIN. These two Superbowl coaches must know how to bring that out in their players, and their players must have learned from them how to give selflessly. Go Bears and Colts!
  15. Dave--???I don't have any idea what point you're trying to make with your last statement, and you're falling off topic. Someone brought up how impressed they were with the two coaches leading their teams into the Super Bowl. It was also mentioned they were Christians and that fact had inspired people. I personally supported the statement that Coaches Dungy and Smith were awesome coaches and fantastic examples of faithful Christians who used their fame to bring honor to God and acknowledge that they try to serve Him as they coach each year. If you don't agree, that's fine. I never said that "only Christians are good coaches", just that I do NOT support the style of coaching that included repeatedly swearing, slapping around players, temper tantrums, etc. I just can't end this post without correcting one point, however. Even when in the temple driving out the corrupt money lenders, Jesus Christ DID NOT "use some choice words" as you say you are sure of. How do I know? Because Jesus Christ was without sin. Completely. Not only did He NOT use foul language, he did NOT whip the money traders/lenders, as you stated. He used the whip to drive out the animals from the temple, specifically sheep and cattle. He overturned the tables of the money lenders who had turned His father's house into a "den of robbers". (Book of John) Please do not give out false information simply because you have chosen not to believe. You have made several statements that are completely false according to scripture, regardless of the version. Just because you might have heard it said does not make it the word of God. This should not be a religious debate, not only because this is a sports forum, but because you cannot debate religion with someone who does not truly have faith. That is in no way a put-down, and please do not take it as such. Simply a statement. Now everyone can get back to the topic at hand. I promise to stay on topic myself.
