  1. Grapeland beat Cushing tonight 11-1 in 5 innings. Ruston Boyd pitched the whole game for the Sandies. VERY strong showing. Kids and coaches were focused... very impressive. Congratulations to Coach Padgett, Coach Veirs, and all the boys. I'm very proud of you. Glad I got to see you take the next step. Keep it going. JY
  2. I'm the principal in Grapeland and I can tell you that there was a very serious family issue that Coach Padgett had to deal with. The situation did warrant him missing a game. He was at school Monday, planning for a normal day, when he got the call and had to leave. Coach Padgett is a great coach and great man. I'm glad he is coaching our kids and I can assure you he wasn't "scared." It's not my intent to tell Coach's business here. But, I will say, our kids know why he missed. I think it sets a great example for them to know that a man should take care of his family in a situation like that over being at a baseball game. Coach Padgett will return soon. As to the poster above that commented on the behavior at the game. I was at the game and those issues have been addressed. As an ex-AD/head coach, I know what it takes to win big: great athletes doing things the right way. We do have the athletes; it's our job as a staff to show them the right way. I hope if you see us play again, you notice an improvement. Joe Young Grapeland HS
  3. Even though the quarterback was "outside the tackle box" his pass attempt to avoid a sack did not pass the line of scrimmage. I don't think it hit anyone. The call was intentional grounding. I thought it was a good call.
  4. You should not call someone stupid if you don't know the rules. NCAA Football Rule 5-2; Article 7 : FOUL BETWEEN SERIES The penalty for any dead-ball foul incurred after a series ends and before the next ready-for-play signal SHALL BE ENFORCED BEFORE THE LINE TO GAIN IS ESTABLISHED. The penalty for any dead-ball foul incurred after the ready-for-play signal shall be enforced after the line to gain is established. This means that because the penalty happened AFTER the play but BEFORE the start of the 25 second clock, the penalty was marked off before the line to gain was established. If he had blown the whistle to signal "ready-for-play" and THEN the penalty occurred, it would have been 1st and more than 10. Unsportsmanlike Conduct is a 15-yard dead-ball foul penalty so it falls under 5-2(7).
  5. It was a very bizarre game with respect to officiating. :hmm: VERY bizarre. I can tell you: 1. One flag was thrown on "those people up there." From my interpretation of the official's explanation, the "people up there" had a response to the clock being reset that he did not like. It was unclear to me if he meant clock keeper or fans near the press box. The official also thought the clock should have been reset "quicker" and that was the other penalty. 2. I saw a very spirited game from both teams. I didn't see any taunting from where I was standing on the sideline but the kids were getting excited on big plays. The play in question was during the third quarter when Cayuga's player made a great run. He got excited as he made the first down and a flag was thrown. As the official was explaining the flag to Coach Allison, another flag goes up and then another. There were no physical taunts so I assume words were said. The official clearly signals an ejection of a Cayuga player. Then he goes back over to Coach Allison and when the game resumes, the player was back on the field. (I didn't hear what got the kid ejected, so he may not have deserved it, but to eject then change your mind is very strange. They may have ejected the wrong kid and then put him back in but it was very strange.) 3. I think the refs became a very HUGE distraction because they were so unorthodox. I do not think they took the game away from either side though. The turnovers from both teams hurt. The back from Cayuga had a great game and Grapeland's defense made a huge 4th down play to stop their final drive. Grapeland's punter side steps the rush after a bad snap and gets off a great punt to seal the game with a few seconds left. The kids decided the game; the refs just were too much of the show.
  6. Having been an AD/HC in a 2A school, I can tell you from experience, the most important factor is your philosophy being compatible with that of the head coach. Know what you believe going in and interview the coach as much as he interviews you. If it's important to you that you get to go home on Wednesday afternoons, you should be sure you don't have to stay and help paint the field on those days. If you don't think basketball should start practice before football ends, ask. You don't have to justify your position, just ask general questions about 2 sport athletes or weekly work schedule. The AD will be glad to tell you because he doesn't want you unhappy when you get there either. Then once you get hired, be loyal. My dad always said, "Change your philosophy or change your address." Once you are there, you have to be a team. At the small school level, there are plenty of people in the stands and the community who will tear you and your head coach apart every chance they get. Be united.
  7. As Theromo stated, it's just between the teams involved. I don't remember all the scores so I can't confirm his math but he is correct on the concept. The max for the district is 21 points per game.
  8. Tiebreakers in district standings are determined prior to the start of the season by the district executive committee. Each district can have their own tiebreaker procedures. I was HC/AD and AD for 3 years and we had 3 different systems. Head-to-head is usually always considered first. Then it usually goes to points. Not sure, off the top of my head, the 21-A system for this year. Last year it was the point system (with a maximum per game) if there was no clear winner after head-to-head.
  9. Grapeland run rules them 11-1 in 6 innings. Nice job.
  10. Preference and what you got to do to win in some places are two different things. My preference... give me some thick quick-footed linemen and a decent back and JUST TRY and stop the inside zone, zone stretch and counter... What I had to do to win where I was hc.. spread 'em out and run through, around, and get the ball in space to athletes..
  11. Only as a professional educator was I "stepped on." As a football coach, didn't mean a thing to me. I've come to expect it from fans. It just amazes me that people think our profession can be simplified down to whether you played oline or quarterback over 20 years ago. Totally unrelated. Now if you want to discuss being balanced or having answers for people who put 11 guys on the line.. I agree. But your connection really doesn't fit with some of your other comments I've read over the years. You usually have good opinions. And just for the record: I did play oline and dline. I did coach oline in 4A and 5A as the OC. I did coach the oline as the head coach in 2A. I am fat and sweat a lot. Our kids were able to run a balanced spread offense and make the playoffs despite my previous inferior coaching and playing assignments and my weight. I just threw the fat part in there because I think there is equal connection with it and the other things you mentioned to my coaching ability. No hard feelings. Just think you are off base and it was a funny comment to read.
  12. This type of thinking amazes me. I sure hope if my house catches on fire, my fireman played with matches when he was younger. I sure hope that if a robber breaks in my house, my policeman had a bb gun in jr. high. I sure hope if I get sued, my lawyer argued with his sister. I sure hope if I get sick, my doctor used a first aid kit in high school. I sure hope if I need a loan, my banker had a piggy bank. This is crazy to think a "skill position" kid is going to make a better professional teacher and coach than a kid that played on the line. Do you really think that is a valid connection? WOW
