No, there is a minimum base pay based on years of service but districts can set pay of teachers/coaches to a point higher...also can set stipends at whatever point they want...or as low as they want. Different sports have different stipends and head coaches stipends are usually higher than assistants stipends. I would also add districts can, and do, get pretty good at adding or stacking stipends for almost anything to entice a head coach or to get an assistant coach to come to their school...I've seen stipends for field maintenance, laundry, third assistant positions and on and on!!!

I agree...he made a legitimate point about the job (concerning the pay scale) unfortunately that is the problem many of the small schools in our area are facing, or will face in the near future. There is just not a large enough tax base to warrant higher pay scales for their coaches...I have been a fan of PP for many years but I think the job is not as desirable as it once was. Besides the problem with the lower pay and fewer assistant coaches I think the community's expectations are much higher than what will be obtainable on the field. I hope I am wrong but I just don't see the deep runs happening in the near future and when that happens it will, of course, be the new guys fault, and he will be gone. Sure hope I am wrong, they have been such a good program for a long time. For the kids sake I hope they get a good one or elevate someone on staff.

No doubt that replacing someone of Coach Kelm's abilities and leadership will be tough...I thought the same thing when they replaced Coach Murphy but they never missed a beat. Wish them well, we still have some good friends there, hope they can continue their success in all their programs.

Yes, whoever posted it said they were the BB coach/AD (that had been discussed in other post) and this would be his one and only post about the subject. It went on to say that the concern about other programs (FB) was unnecessary because he wanted ALL the programs to improve and was a big fan of football...the interesting part of the post was his other statement that said he had been offered (and accepted) the AD job and the head FB job had been offered and filled also?? This was Thursday or Friday I believe...maybe someone decided not to take the FB position after all and he had to pull the post or maybe the poster was an imposter?? Not sure...just thought it was a little strange.

Geez guys I told yall what the story was...no rumors or guesses...the bb coach is going to be the AD and they are looking for someone that will take the FB position only...many will not go for that...as they have discovered...but sooner or later someone will be desperate enough to take it. As someone noted above, this set-up normally does not work very well...for the kids sake, I hope they get a quality guy to take it.

Yes, the "worst jobs in the state" draw lots of applicants...that's not what I said...I said there would be a large number of GOOD coaches that would like to have this job because of the location and quality of kids they will work with...and yes, it is what it is...a pretty good job for the right person.

This is one job that a lot of very good coaches would love to have regardless of the "crappy pay" as you put it...if that's even true... hiring from within has worked pretty well for them, so more than likely that would be a deciding factor for the direction they go. This is a great place to work in an area of the state that many would love to live in.

I think you hit the nail on the head...and yes he is a great guy and great coach. Not many schools can say they have had only two head coaches in 28 years and have been competitive every year!! Including a couple of state championships, I believe!! I also would be very shocked if they went outside for this hire. Great place to coach and live, some of the hardest working kids you will ever see...winning and hard work is expected for both the girls and guys programs in all sports.

Really strange...we went down to visit my in-laws this past weekend and they also have Dish. They are also not receiving the local Fox channel. Got back to my RV today and double checked our Dish guide and we are still definitely getting the local Fox affiliate BUTTTT we get FOX 25 KOKH out of Oklahoma City...we get all our local channels out of Oklahoma City because that's the zip/address on the bill and when we travel all we have to do is call them and change the zip to wherever we are and we can get the local channels/weather where we are...now the question is...is it just Texas local Fox affiliates that are blacked out??? Sure seems that is the case!!! Oh, I still don't get Fox Sports Southwest.

If his grades and test scores are good enough to get in I'm betting he will get plenty of offers...like you said...the risk is worth it for some of the coaches that are desperate to turn things around.

Yes, it's almost always resolved in the games leading up to the state championship so the UIL does not have to become involved. I have heard of a couple of situations where coaches were not able to come to an agreement and the UIL made the decision. We were a part of one of those several years ago. The other coach would not agree with any of our choices and wanted the UIL to make the call. But that is very rare. I'm almost positive that the UIL appoints the referee crews for the state championship games...got me curious now, I am going to find out for sure. Maybe one of the refs that frequent Smoaky will inform us or someone that has been to the championship game as a coach (we never quite made it)!! LOL!!
