  2. I think East Texas can compete in football.... and even basketball.

But there will likely be a sacrifice.

Athletes will have to become specialists just like they do in those elite basketball schools, football schools, baseball schools, etc.

That sacrifice of being a one sport athlete will hurt sports not chosen compared to the multi-sport athletes.

This will result in schools becoming elite in one sport and likely struggle in others.

One school becomes football elite.  Another becomes basketball elite.  Another baseball elite.

Hope I’m wrong.... but if the specialist athlete becomes the norm.... and multi-sport athletes become less common.... each school will be affected differently.

  3. Exactly what ANTI said.  Agree 100%.

    Another thing to consider.....

Most of East Texas' 5A programs see their basketball athletes playing football in the fall and then running track/playing baseball in the spring.  Then 7 on 7 in the summer.

Most of the top athletes at the basketball elite schools are basketball specialists.... they aren't messing around with football or track or baseball.....and definitely not 7 on 7.  They are playing basketball ALL YEAR.  The workout and prep for basketball is different than it is for football and track, etc.....   they aren't bouncing back and fourth between different workouts and diets.  It's basketball 24/7/365.

That makes a HUGE difference.  Being a multi-sport athlete Vs. a basketball specialist gives you a leg up.  Especially when you have a BENCH-FULL of those type of athletes.

Pretty big games Saturday.  SS in desperate need of a win to keep themselves in the playoff chase.  A loss would put them on the outside looking in.  Longview needs a win to keep themselves in sole possession of first place over MP.  MP needs a win over PT to keep pace with Longview.... PT needs a win to keep pace with MP and Longview.

Last place Jacksonville got the upset of the season with their 2-0 win over first place Whitehouse.  The loss dropped the Wildcats down to second place.  The win kept the Tribe's dire playoff hopes alive.  LP's win over Huntsville coupled with WH's loss lifted the Panthers to the top of the district standings.  Tyler and Nac battled to a tie.  The Lions still have a make-up game with Huntsville pending.

    Huntsville beat North Forney 91-85
    Midlothian beat Sulphur Springs 44-36
Mount Pleasant beat Waco University 67-33
    Highland Park beat Longview 57-52

Mount Pleasant will be the lone school of East Texas (sorry Huntsville) to advance to the third round of the playoffs thanks to their dominating performance over a chippy Waco University team.  The Tigers are now 26-0 and will face Huntsville on Saturday with details TBA.  Meanwhile Sulphur Springs saw a 14 point halftime lead evaporate against Midlothian in an 8 point loss.  Longview overcame a big deficit  to HP, but the Scots managed to hang on for the win.

Congrats to MP and their win..... good luck Saturday!

    Texas High- OFF

Longview and MP are clearly the two top teams in the district and the finish for the district championship could be a great one with the rematch coming up next week (Longview won the first game in a shootout).  The race for the final two spots could be a good one between PT, SS, and Hallsville who could find themselves in a three-way tie should PT lose to Longview on Friday.

    Lufkin Vs. Tyler ?????

The standings are a little deceiving without Tyler's score Vs. LP tonight and the Lion's pending make-up game Vs. Huntsville, which will be played in a few weeks.  It appears Huntsville and Jacksonville are on the outside looking in as far as the post season goes.  However, Tyler, WH, Lufkin, and Nac are tightly contesting the finish for 1-4.

  6. Still looking to confirm this....but I've heard it from multiple people that Coach CJ Lottinger will be returning to Marshall as an offensive line coach.

If this is true.... this is absolutely HUGE.  He was instrumental in our district/playoff success in his first stint with the Mavs.

The O-line was without a doubt Marshall's achilles heel in 2019 and 2020... more of a liability than an asset for sure.

He had great success in Longview as well.

This could be Coach G's best hire in his short tenure.

    Welcome back, Coach Lott!!!!

  8. It boggles my mind how monumentally terrible Marshall’s girls soccer team has been ever since it’s inception given the explosive growth of the girls city league.

And the boys..... who have never really been a powerhouse.... was at least an annual playoff contender and qualifier. Their not even competitive anymore.  Which is insane given the popularity and participation in the weekend leagues in town.

Soccer has grown so much they have their own municipal facilities now. Pretty good ones too.  Yet here we are at MHS abd we can’t score a goal to save our life.

  10. MARSHALL, Texas - Keyed by three defensive touchdowns, the East Texas Baptist University football team dominated Belhaven University, 44-16, in Ornelas Stadium for the first time since November 2019. ETBU is now 2-0 on the season and in the American Southwest Conference.

BU outgained the Tigers in total yards of offense (361-315), which included 217 yards rushing. ETBU would record 219 yards passing and would finished with a higher yards per play rate (5.63-4.95).

Aaron Brown went 12-for-22 for 159 yards and a touchdown pass while scoring one touchdown and having six rushes for 38 yards. Jalen Blanton finished with four receptions for 62 yards while Cris Williamscaught the touchdown pass. Cornelius Merchant had a rushing touchdown.

ETBU's defensive players would spark the Tigers win. Leading the way were 10 tackles plus two pick sixes by KJ Kelley and a fumble recovery for a touchdown by Donovan Graham. Justice Henson would record nine tackles while James Wright IV(seven tackles) and Josh Reed each recorded a sack. Kenneth Bradley would also record an interception.

The Blazers first drive led to a punt that landed at ETBU's eight-yard line. However, ETBU would fumble their first snap as the ball went out of bounds for a safety. BU would drive to the ETBU 29 before they punted the ball. ETBU's second drive would start off well as they reached midfield. A holding penalty and a fumble ended the drive but BU's third drive ended when they failed to get a first down. ETBU then followed with a three-and-out as the first quarter ended with the Blazers up, 2-0.

On the first play in the second quarter, Kelley picked off BU's third down pass and ran it back 94 yards for a pick-6 giving ETBU a 7-2 lead. BU would be unfazed as they would answer with a four-play 70-yard drive ending on a 57-yard touchdown reception and a 9-7 lead. ETBU would finally put together an offensive drive going six plays for 71 yards. Brown found Cris Williams for seven yards for the first offensive touchdown of the day to lead 14-9. After punts on the next two drives, BU would elect to go for it on fourth down and two. Stuffed at the line and just an inch short of the first down, ETBU took over and ran out the clock taking a 14-9 lead into the half.

ETBU capitalized on their opening drive in the second half going 70-yards on four plays as Merchant found the end zone from six yards out. ETBU then forced a BU punt and received the ball at their three yard line. Once again, BU's defense forced an ETBU turnover as they would recover a fumble and score to cut the lead to 21-16. Two punts later, ETBU would take the ball and faced fourth-and-seven at the 19. Despite an incomplete pass, ETBU received another chance following a BU pass interference penalty. Then, in the same drive, ETBU faced a fourth-and-goal as Brown snuck into the endzone for the touchdown. Three plays later as Belhaven started their drive, Kelley recorded his second pick-six of the game goring 52-yards for the 35-16 advantage after three quarters.

ETBU would get another interception on BU's next possession just two plays as Bradley gave the Tigers the ball at the Blazer 35-yard line. ETBU then converted a field goal by Alberto Garcia from 34-yards out making it, 38-16. The final ETBU defensive touchdown came from Graham as he would recover a fumble and return it 31 yards for a 44-16 lead with 10:05 left in the game. ETBU's defense would then keep the Blazers off the board the rest of the way preserving the 44-16 win.

As I stated before, Nac's District in swimming is a cakewalk. Having only 1 advance when you dominated the District proves this. However, good luck to the 200 Free Team.

Why be a douche about it?
    Nac doesn’t pick their district.
They compete where they are put... and they dominate.
just say congrats and move on.
Don’t see the point in trying to lessen their accomplishments.

  15. GEORGETOWN, Texas - Overcoming a 10-point deficit after the first quarter, the East Texas Baptist University football team emerged victorious outscoring the Southwestern Pirates 28-7 on their way to a 28-17 win in their first game of the spring 2021 season. ETBU is now 1-0 on the season and in the American Southwest Conference East Division.

Despite being outgained in total offense (336-271), the Tigers were able to benefit with 160 yards passing from Aaron Brownin his first ever start at ETBU. Brown also completed 17-of-26 passes and two touchdowns. The Tigers also gained 111 yards rushing as Bailey Badeaux finished with 53 yards and one touchdown. Jalen Blanton led all receivers with four receptions for 46 yards while DeCarlos Frazier (three receptions for 36 yards) and Tariq Gray (three receptions for 21 yards) caught touchdown passes.

On defense, Justice Henson and Azaya Patrick recorded nine tackles each while Henson recorded a pick-six. Josh Reed had two tackles for loss while Zach Pikefinished with eight tackles and also had an interception and forced a fumble.

The Pirates received the kickoff and drove down the field before the Tigers recorded an interception, which was then called back due to a pass interference penalty. On their second chance, the Pirates converted a field goal from 35 yards out for the 3-0 lead. ETBU's first drive ended with a fumble recovered at the Pirate 45-yard line. Capitalizing on their field position, SU converted a 16-yard completion for a touchdown to take a 10-0 lead in the first quarter.

A critical pass interference call on the Pirates started the second quarter as ETBU went 10 plays for 68 yards to get on the board. It was a 21-yard completion from Brown to Frazier that put the Tigers in the end zone trailing 10-7. Facing a fourth-and-1 from ETBU's 44-yard line, the Pirates gambled and went for it. KJ Kelley made the tackle to prevent a first down and gave the ball back to the Tigers. Once again, ETBU scored as Brown found Gray from 10 yards out to give ETBU a 14-10 lead. The Pirates would answer back with a touchdown on their next drive to take the lead, 17-14. But ETBU was undeterred as they answered with their third straight touchdown drive. This time, it was Badeaux, who rushed for 10 yards to put ETBU up 21-17. SU's last drive of the half ended with a turnover on downs.

After a Tiger punt opened the third quarter, SU's first drive ended when Pike intercepted a pass and returned to the Pirate 47. ETBU would then throw two interceptions on their next two drives. Fortunately, the Pirates failed to score as the first drive ended with a punt while the second one ended with a missed field goal attempt. ETBU took over at their own 30 and drove to the 28 yard-line before facing fourth-and-eight. They were unable to get the first down and turned the ball over. ETBU's defense forced the Pirates to punt as the score stayed the same entering the fourth quarter.

The first three drives of the fourth quarter resulted in punts for both teams. SU had the ball on their own 20-yard-line and moved 12 yards. On third-and-five, Henson intercepted a pass and brought it back for 37 yards for a touchdown pushing the lead to 11, 28-17. Two SU drives later, the Pirates had the ball at ETBU's six-yard line, but were able to score as ETBU's defense had a goal line stand preventing the score. The Tigers took over and ran the clock to grab a win.

ETBU will return Marshall, Texas, for their home opener against Belhaven University next Saturday at 1:00 PM.
