  1. Fact of the matter is that 14-4A has not fared very well against top tier teams. (0-3) Vs. Kilgore. (0-3) Vs. Whitehouse. (0-3) Vs. 12-5A Our remaining losses are to Nacogdoches (Hallsville), Bossier Parkway (Marshall), and Atlanta (Mt. Pleasant). Only Parkway is ranked in that bunch with Parkway at #4 in Louisiana. And when you see where our victories have come from, it's eye opening. Most of them aren't very good. 2-0 against Van, who is 0-5 2-0 against Lindale who is 1-4 2-0 against Paris, who is 1-4 2-0 against Libert Eylau, who is 2-3 1-0 against Jacksonville, who is 0-5 1-0 against Terrell, who is 1-3 1-0 against Henderson who is 1-4 1-0 against Sherman who is 2-2 1-0 against Corsicana who is 1-4 1-0 against Center who is 0-5 1-0 against Kennedale who is 1-4 1-0 against Arkansas High who is 1-3 14-4A's victories have come against teams that are a combined (9-39). The district has yet to beat anyone with a winning record. Here is a quick look at each team in 14-4A's opponents combined record Marshall's opponents are 17-6. Take Jacksonville out and they are (17-1). Sulphur Springs' opponents are 12-12. WH at 5-0 is the only one with a winning record. Mt. Pleasants opponents are 11-13. Take Kilgore out and they are a combined (6-13). Hallsville's opponents are 7-13. Nac was the only team they faced with a winning record. Texas High's opponents are 6-13. Natchitoches Central (3-1) comes to Texarkana Friday. Pine Tree's opponents are 6-14. Take out Kilgore and they are 1-14. Crazy numbers. But the it's conceivable to say that 16-4A appears to be significantly stronger than 14-4A. Especially at the top.
  2. I agree Texas High has played as well as anyone in the district. They seem to be the only team in 14-4A that doesn't have a glaring deficiency. Sulphur Springs- Defense has some serious issues. Giving up 40.8 points a game?? wow. Mount Pleasant- Injuries have decimated this team, can they recover? Hallsville- Same old story in Hallsville. Lacking some consistency. Win one. Lose one. Win one. Lose one. Pine Tree- Good record, but to call it a cupcake schedule would be an understatement. Marshall- Is it possible to give up more points than SS? YES. 43.4 ppg.
  3. Central may be strong this year....... But traditionally they aren't very good. I've seen them twice. Not recently mind, you. But they were pretty awful when I saw them (2008ish/2009ish). And of course I saw what Longview did to them a couple of years back. Texas High by many I think......
  4. PT is hard to gauge. They have scored a TON of points in their wins. BUT.....their wins are not against quality opponents. Just look at their overall records. Nac hung tough with a top 5 Carthage team.....and beat Lufkin. This game will say a lot about where PT is IMHO. If they beat Nac 14-4A better sit up and take notice. But if Nac blows them out.... makes you wonder if PT's record is inflated by a weak schedule. I attended the Kilgore/PT game.....so it's hard to know where the Pirates are. Been a long time for both Nac and PT..... could be their year. Never know.
  5. Most of the district will be off this week, but two teams will have one final tune up before district starts next week. The biggest questions headed into the week could be.... are some teams better than expected? And are some not as good as we thought? Here are the current standings: Texas High (3-1) Pine Tree (3-1) Sulphur Springs (3-2) Mount Pleasant (3-2) Hallsville (3-2) Marshall (1-4) Texas High: The Tigers come into this week at (3-1) with a 16-0 win over Arkansas High, a 30-8 won over Liberty Eylau, and a 27-7 win over Kennedale. Those three teams are a combined (4-9). Kennedale is 1-4 and Ark is 1-3. Texarkana faces a 3-1 Natchitoches Central team on Friday. The Tigers were iffy coming into the season after a lackluster campaign in 2012. It appears the Tigers are pulling it together in 2013 however. Perhaps the rumors of their demise were greatly exaggerated. Their lone loss was to 5A Tyler Lee in a 38-37 barn burner. Lee is (3-2). Texas High will be an odds on favorite Friday and SHOULD improve to 4-1. The Tigers look to be prepared to challenge for the district title again. Pine Tree: The Pirates come into the season also at (3-1) and will close out their non district schedule against a surging Nacogdoches team. PT has scored 40 or more points in three of their first four games. Including a 42-38 win over Van, 64-49 over Center, and 51-21 over Lindale. Their lone loss was 56-7 to Kilgore. Strength of schedule has been questioned for the Pirates as their wins came over teams that are a combined (1-14) : Van (0-5), Center (0-5) and Lindale (1-4). Their game this week could be a huge measuring stick. Nac (3-1) has already beaten 5A Lufkin and took state ranked Carthage to the wire 44-40. Nac could be PT's best idea of knowing where they are against similar talent. Eyes will be on PT and Nac. Sulphur Springs: The Wildcats enter the bye week (3-2). They have been scoring points in bushels, but they have also been surrendering them in almost equal quantities. Last week they outscored Corsicana (1-4) 77-65. They also have a 43-9 win over Paris (1-4) and 34-14 over Sherman (2-2). Tyler Lee beat the 'Cats 55-20. Whitehouse dropped them 61-22. They are surrendering an average of 40.8 points a game. The disturbing part of that is outside of Lee and WH, the other three teams are a combined (4-10). Injuries have been an issue. The good news for the Wildcats is that while the opposition may score 60 points on them, they are capable of getting 70 for the victory. Mount Pleasant: The Tigers (3-2) were favorites for possibly dethroning Sulphur Springs for the district title in the summer. However, it appears injuries may have derailed their season. Injuries to SEVEN starters would hurt any team, but several of them were season-ending. Like SS, MP has been scoring at will....at least they were. A 40-17 win over Paris (1-4), 34-20 over Liberty Eylau (2-3), and 77-34 over Terrell (1-3) had them flying high. Then came Kilgore....and the injuries....and the losses. The Bulldogs won 48-20, but last week's 32-14 loss to Atlanta sent shockwaves that MP could be in trouble. MP's wins are over teams that are a combined (4-10). Atlanta and Kilgore are true contenders. Hallsville: The Bobcats (3-2) have been impressive in their wins and their losses have been against one of the state's best and perhaps against one of the biggest dark horses in 4A. A 58-28 loss to Whitehouse is nothing to write home about as WH is (3-0) against 14-4A. Scoring 58 (Hville) 59 (Marshall) and 61 (SS). A 35-26 win over Van (0-5) helped them bounce back. Other wins were 35-22 over Henderson (1-4), and 56-28 over Lindale (1-4). Last week's 24-21 loss to Nac snapped their 3 game winning streak. Their wins are over teams that are a combined (2-8) while they hang with Nac (3-1) and Whitehouse (5-0) for a half. The Bobcats have the look of one of their better offenses in recent years. But the defense could be lagging. Marshall: The Mavericks (1-4) finally wrapped up their brutal non-district schedule with a 35-28 win over Jacksonville (0-5). Marshall fell to #5 Kilgore (4-0) 42-7, Longview (4-1) 26-14, #5 Bossier Parkway (3-0) 62-19, and #3 Whitehouse (5-0) 59-3. Their non-district opponents are a combined (16-6). Take out Jacksonville and they are (15-1). The question for Marshall is this: are they more on level with their 14-4A counterparts than their record shows OR... are the Mavs still in the same boat they were last season? They will know quickly as their first three district games are against Hallsville, Mount Pleasant, and Pine Tree. Hopes are high in Marshall, but with guarded trepidation as no one really knows how good or bad this team is compared to the rest of 14-4A. Games this Friday Pine Tree Vs. Nacogdoches Natchitoches Central Vs. Texas High
  6. Nac has beaten a team with pedigree, even if they are struggling this season. And almost pulled it off against Carthage. PT has only played one contender....and they got blown out (Kilgore). Think I'm going to take Nac. I was at Nac's 2006 playoff game against Texas High. Looks like they got another coming down the pike!
  7. Marshall 2010. Injuries completely derailed that season and lead to our 7 point loss in the playoffs. And it's been all downhill since for us. Bad deal for MP..... good news for everyone else in 14-4A.
  8. I'm shocked. MP was my favorite for the district title...... now I'm not so sure. What injuries have they had that are so devastating? 14-4A looking more and more wide open than I think most of us even expected. I'm not sure there is a GREAT team in the district like there is in 16-4A
  9. You could copy and paste most of that for Marshall. The only difference has been the strength of schedule. Jacksonville's has been tough too, but Marshall has the edge. The results have been the same. Marshall has been a non-factor in all of their games except the Longview game...... and the Lobos had that one wrapped by by early in the 4th. Parkway had us down 28-0 at the end of one quarter. Whitehouse had us down 25-3 at halftime. Been pretty ugly so far....I hope it was just because of who we've been playing. I honestly think if anyone in either of the 4A districts had the schedule we've had.... their record would be the same as ours. BUT....I imagine the scores would have been closer with some of them. Like I said....we will know quickly. Jacksonville, Hallsville, PT are our next three. All three are considerably lesser teams than our first four. How much improvement we see will be an instant gague as to where we are right now. This week IMHO sets the tone for the remainder of the season......perhaps for both teams. 16-4A has the look of a wde open district with the apparent surge in Nac. Right now.....gotta say WH,and Nac appear to be on top of their game right now. JT is.....well....JT. Can't count them out.
  10. I've said my peace about Marshall's schedule the last 4 weeks. Words like ridiculous come to mind. When you are in the process of rebuilding, there is absolutely no reason you should have four state ranked teams on your schedule. I honestly hope the current staff can make some schedule changes so we can be more competitive to start a season with realignment coming. When we pull ourselves out of this hole we are in, THEN we can go back to having a schedule like this. But until that happens.... I think we need some common sense to prevail. Three teams ranked #5....and Longview....... SMDM. ---------- So now....in theory we are getting to a more level playing field. We will find out if our offensive impotence has been the product of playing 4 state ranked defenses..... or if it's actually our own offensive ineptitude. We will also find out if our porous defense has been the product of 4 state ranked offenses.....or if it's actually our own defensive deficiencies. Part of me wants to say it's all been a product of playing teams entirely out of our league. I hope this is the case. But in the back of my mind, I'm wondering if this just isn't coming together in 2013. Offensively there were times we moved the ball well against Kilgore and Longview, but lacked consistency. We blew some additional scoring opportunities against both of them. However, against Parkway and Whitehouse..... our offense was anemic. Granted. the Whitehouse game was played in a monsoon, but that didn't slow them down any. I still can't believe we had a first and goal inside the 5 yardline TWICE and failed to get the TD. Maddening. I feel bad for the defense. I'm well aware they have had some tackling issues. But the biggest reason (IMHO) we have been giving up these insane amounts of points is the fact that the offense is punting from the shadow of their own goal line most of the time. The defense is usually given only half a football field to do their job. Sometimes less than half. And we don't even have to talk about the insane number of plays they are on the field. So Jacksonville is 0-4. They aren't anywhere near the level of Kilgore, Longview, Parkway, or Whitehouse. This is big for the Mavs. This is big for them to find out who they are. If they come out and can be competitive.... and perhaps even get a win, then the 14-4A race could be interesting for that #4 spot. But..... If they come out....and we see a similar game against the Indians that we saw last season.....then I think we all know what could be coming. Something that has NEVER happened in 111 years of Maverick football. (0-10) has never happened. (0-9-1) is the closest we have ever come. And that was 50 years ago.....1963. I think this team has the talent to win some games. We've seen the flashes of brilliance. But consistency and confidence are lacking right now. I hope they can pull it together. I think they can. Hope they can. Otherwise we could see the kind of history you don't want to see be made.
  11. Going to be a long night for my Mavs I believe. I'm ready to get this week over with so we can start playing teams more on our level. IMHO we have no business playing all these ranked teams right now. But it is what it is. If we we playing Center, Van, Terrell, and Paris......We might have a prettier record. That's not a knock against the rest of 144A but more to show the inequity in our no district schedule. Getting our brains bashed in by ranked teams makes no sense to me. This isn't marshall 04, 05. This isn't Texarkana 02. Not sulphur springs 08. This is a team that is 3-20. Three #5 teams in 4 games is not what these guys need. Survive this week..... Compartmentalize the first 4 games. Put them behind you and then let's go about the rest of the season. Then we can find out were we are in a hurry with Jacksonville, Hallsville, and Pine Tree in line for the next three. But this schedule is ridiculous for a team attempting to rebuild. Safe travels for all. See you there tomorrow night!
  12. SHERMAN, Texas – A brand new way of playing East Texas Baptist University football was introduced in Sherman, Texas, with a season opening 52-34 win over Austin College (0-2). ETBU led from the beginning to the end scoring the most points in a season opener breaking the record of 49 points scored in the 2001 opener giving Joshua Eargle his first win in his first game as a head coach. “This game means a lot to the program,” says head coach Joshua Eargle. “We have been practicing the last three weeks for this game and today we came out and showed what this team has been working on and capable of doing. I am so proud of these players and what they started today as we continue to chase greatness for ETBU football.” ETBU finished with 611 yards of total offense which was just nine yards shy of breaking the single game record set in 2003. Brooks Holder debuted at quarterback and threw for 316 yards completing 31 passes on 40 attempts. “Brooks did a nice job of running our offense today and taking care of the ball. We had a nice balanced attack on offense and our defense came up with some big plays when needed.” Jamaine Sherman and Toi Glover produced career days with big plays all day. Sherman hauled in 12 passes for 175 yards which both put him in the top three for single game records. His 12 catches is second all-time in a game while his 175 yards receiving is third all-time. Glovier pushed through for 153 yards rushing on 29 carries for a career high. Dylan Benge recorded six tackles to lead the team while Drew Benge and Romeo Botelua each picked off a pass. It didn’t take long for the ETBU offense to score in the first quarter as John Gable trotted in from five yards out with 7:49 on the clock and then converted a two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead. Austin College answered back in just 43 seconds to pull within two missing their extra point but just under three minutes later Glovier scored his first of three touchdowns on the day on a three-yard run and 4:31 on the clock. Just before the half ended, Austin College’s Madison Ross caught a 13-yard pass as they cut the lead to three, 16-13. ETBU’s Chris Frazier collected his first touchdown of the year on an eight-yard pass from Holder with 9:49 in the second quarter extending the lead to 10, 23-13, but Austin College bounced back with 4:04 left in the half down three, 23-20 headed to the locker room. Scoring twice in the third quarter on a 36-yard pass from Holder to Sherman and a two-yard pass to Glovier put ETBU 36-27 with 5:02 to go. ETBU would take a 45-27 lead in the fourth on a one-yard Glovier run and a 32-yard field goal from Cory McNeil. With 5:13 left Austin College scored their first points in the quarter to pull within 11, 45-34, only to see Roy Butler make it 52-34 on a 31-yard pass from Holder with 1:24 left to play. The win for ETBU in a season opener is only the fourth for the program and first since 2010. ETBU travels to Georgetown, Texas, next Saturday with a 7:00 p.m. kickoff against first-year program Southwestern University.
  13. NAIA use to have two divisions I think....but it was based on enrollment. But they have gone back to just one division. NAIA is on the decline..... schools are defecting to the NCAA and mostly going D3 or D2. ---------------- On a happy ETBU note... the Tigers had a big day yesterday Vs. Austin College. 52-34 to open the season 1-0. ETBU QB went 31-40 for 316 yards.
  14. Marshall has no business playing teams like Parkway right now. It's ridiculous really. We aren't good team right now. But I think we look worse than we really are because we are playing teams out of our league. We need a schedule more like Texas High. MP. Other 4A teams. Look at the nondistrict schedules for the teams in districts 14 and 16. With the exception of JT... None of them compare to our schedule. And we are nowhere near the level of JT. I'm having trouble seeing the benefit of getting throttled for four weeks playing state ranked teams week after week. I don't want a cupcake schedule. But it makes more sense to be playing teams that we can compete with. A 3-20 team playing four straight state ranked teams is counter productive and serves no one to the better. ------------ Don't think parkway would have beat Longview IMHO. They made some mistakes the lobos would have actually made them pay for. On to Whitehouse. And hopefully after next week we may actually see some competitive football.
  15. Longview run defense is outstanding. Punt team almost gave it away. OB missed two PATs and a FG.
  16. If parkway keeps passing the ball every down probably some time Sunday morning. Woodshed. Marshall has no business playing state ranked teams right now. Just my opinion. I don't see how this betters us.... Or them.
  17. Thanks??? I think..... Things have changed a lot. There was a time when losing to Marshall didn't make you a laughing stock. Ready for those days to return. Hopefully. Someday soon.
  18. Wow. Just. Wow. When is our turn over Longview coming? Congrats again to Nac.
  19. Went about how I expected Kilgore is the real deal
  20. Maybe the best stadium in East Texas. Undoubtedly the worst parking in the northern hemisphere. Did they even do a traffic study before building this place????
