  1. Wrigley Field. August 1988. Cubs in 1st place! Greg Madox pitching... Saturday, "Game of the Week" versus the New York Mets... Simply, OUTSTANDING!!!
  2. The first thing wrong with the Oil Palace is that it is run by a family of CROOKS! They have a long, long histroy of ripping people off, including many of the "acts" that they have arranged to perform there! It has not been updated or even "cleaned" in years and they have not updated the facilities (i.e. bathrooms) since they opened. They charge for parking, yet have dirt, uneven parking area... It is a sad, sad commentary on Tyler that the only places to have convention-style or large-scale, concert-type "events" are the Oil Palace and Harvey Hall...neither are worthy...
  3. The first time, as a kid, that I got to stay up past 8pm (now, this was the 1960's - of course)...was to stay up & watch the NBC movie of the week - "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken" starring Don Knotts. If you have never seen it - it is hilarious! (As movies back then were considered hilarious...) R.I.P. "Barney"....all police officers should wear a piece of black tape over their badges in honor of Don Knotts' death...
  4. Ronald Reagan (helped end Communism) Franklin Roosevelt (got our country through a depression & a major world war) George Washington (essentially started a country from scratch!) Abraham Lincoln (kept our country from self-destructing & ended slavery) George Bush, Jr. (he says what he feels; means what he says...9-1-1 response...enough said!)
  5. 'Trickster, I stand corrected! Yes they were....
  6. GTown...you'd be surprised just how many Cub Fans there are even here in East Texas!!!...however, my original post dealt only with the fact that Spring Training had begun! I'd love to see a Cubs-Ranger Series...
  7. What a sports announcer! "The thrill of victory,...and the agony of defeat!..." RIP Mr. Gowdy!
  8. 'Dawg, Murton does look good (and he did in limited work at the end of last season)....He's hit everywhere (minors) that he's been! (He's featured on this month's Vineline (cubs magazine), along with another rookie starter (Ronny Cedano - SS)... With (Juan) Pierre (52 stolen bases over last 5 years & a .305 hitter) will definitely help! I can't wait 'til Opening Day! April 3rd 1:10 start at Cincy!
  9. You are so correct FarET...while the attendance at TJC basketball games (and I believe UTT also) has been decent over the years.....the attendance at baseball games is dismal....I was at one last week & there were more people from the visitor (a Dallas college) than from Tyler! These guys (at TJC) play college baseball just to be playing college baseball...they get no athletic scholarships! (D III)...
  10. Yep, that's what cubs.com says...Hopefully, with Wood, Prior, & Zambrano all healthy...and possibly a good year from Maddux...the Cubs pitching will dominate the NL... I am going to be very interested in the outfield & their speed on the bases....they're giving up alot of HR's with the projected outfield line-up...but I think that some proven speed on the bags (with this year's lineup) will give us a better shot at winning every day!
  11. "All is RIGHT in the world"....Pitchers & Catchers have begun to report to Spring Training in Arizona and Florida and its only two weeks 'til the 1st Spring Training game! :happy65:
  12. Colmesneil....you are right & that was a great article ! And concerning the election...again, you are right...it was a FEDERAL election & thus, under the auspices of the US Courts...
  13. DieHardCubFan... Means that I am no "band wagon rider" in case the Cubs EVER make it back to the Series!! I've been a fan since 1967 when I was 5 & started playing Little League & our team was named "the Cubs"...just started following them back then as a kid and have ever since!! Go Cubs! 1908 World Champions!!! :smileybanger:
  14. OK 'Trickster, don't get me wrong....I am all for Tyler getting some professional sports! I truly miss minor league baseball & if it ever happened...I'd probably have season tix to a minor league hockey team.....and while te wet/dry issue IS an issue, it is not the major issue keeping it from happening. The people of Tyler love to have "trendy things," and will support them for a few months...but, unless the "team" wins...they'll simply fade off into the sunset (or leave in the middle of the night) - as with the previous two examples!!!
  15. Yea, yea, yea....it sounds like the same ol' song & dance.... "trickster....don't you know that these "city fathers" are just full of "it" and that we will never get another professional sport in Tyler until it goes "wet" (for one thing) and that it builds a TRUE convention/arena (instead of that broken down escuse of one across from the Rose Garden...
  16. Former Homicide Detective - now current college prof!
  17. What two teams were added to the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in 1992? Actually, it was 1991 (1st season played was 1992) - they were Arkansas (from the old SWC) and the University of South Carolina Gamecocks (former indy'). The SEC was then divided into "divisions" (like the Big XII is now). What college team has a mascot known as the "Zips?"
  18. He needs to stick to raising peanuts & taking care of his alcoholic brother....and consider where is from...the most anti-patriotic former-president there has ever been!
  19. 'Dawg, I don't like it. Don't like it one bit! It is simply a ploy by the Major League head office to spread the word about MLB baseball. And I dang sure ain't happy about the possibilities of any of my Cubbies playing (whether it is for the USA, Canada, Puerto Rico, etc.) and getting HURT and then missing the season.... No sir, don't like it one dang bit! :smileybanger:
  20. Without a doubt, DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak is the greatest, while Cal's streak of consecutive games played is a very close 2nd...says alot about the caliber of players THEN and the caliber of players now...
  21. Without a doubt (and I've been to close to 75 in my lifetime) was my FIRST - "KISS" at Tarrant County Convention Center, in Fort Worth in like 1977! WOW!:rocker:
  22. First of all, YEA for Former Cub catcher Joe Girardi for becoming a Major League manager! He is a great guy (got to meet & talk to him a couple of times when he was a Cub), a great baseball player, & has a great knowledge of the game (he learned from one of the best - Don Zimmer - when he later played for the Yanks'). Secondly, while I somewhat agree with the stand, I also believe that if the facial hair (i.e. a goatee - which I have) is kept neat & trim...then it should be OK. Go Cubs! Pitchers & catcher report to Mesa in seven (7) days!:dancingbanana:
  23. I haven't seen it, nor will I ever see it.... However - isn't it billed as a "cowboy love story?".... Hey folks, they are not "cowboys"....they are sheepherders...SHEEPHERDERS!!!! (which of course, might explain alot!!!) Of course, the moral of the story is - "It is ok to fall in love with a cowboy... ...just as long as YOU are not a cowboy too!" :hmmm:
