What is wrong with the Canton Herald?

So your reasoning that T-high is bigger so we deserve more, is kind of what alot of people are talking about, still the same kids no matter what school they belong to. I would just like to see the same excitement for LE as the rest, not asking to put them front and center or to make them bigger then anyone else, would just like to see these kids equal to the others.
No never said that. Reread my post. I mentioned each school with a dominate program that garners the more press. LE girls basketball comes to mind. My observation is there is more interest in the LE girls program, than the Texas High. The coverage in the Gazetter properly reflects this.
Over the last 5 years what football program has been talked about more in the Texarkana community? If you were a newspaper publisher, which football program can potentially maximize newspaper sales. I truly feel all the schools are well represented.
Size has something to do with it. Texas High has enrollment per UIL of 1709. LE has an enrollment of 740. Look at those two numbers. Which is the potential larger market? PG has an enrollement of 605. I would guess the papers distributed in PG are about the same as TISD and more than LEISD. That is where the "money" enters the picture. This is basic economics of selling papers.
This theory about harming the youth of LE is bit of a stretch.
I suggest you by the Shreveport Times. The times I have bought it, I felt the paper product was substandard to the Gazette and its market is 4 times larger. Texarkana is a unique city with four high schools physically located in its city boundaries. That is tough for a small market newpaper.

why you have blinders on to the LE reasoning of week 1, yes there was an article in the sunday paper, but was told that it was burried and no picture because it was old news. so objectivley tell me the coverage around town is the same for all schools.
I acknowleged the Week #1 Gilmer game was the story. The report was the communication broke down to transmit the story and it had to be dictated before the deadline. I do not see deliberate intent.
"was told that it was buried" - that implies you did not buy the Sunday paper. You are complaining about something you did not purchase? My recollection was the article was at the bottom of the front page of the sports section. I do not think that is buried.
Know I don't think the coverage is equal or that it should be. Some schools are larger, therefor more potential readers. Some areas of town have a higher subscription base. Like it or not those are factors. But in general I feel the Gazette follows all four Texarkana schools well.
During Football, Texas High is the lead story. Look at SDC, there are more postings about Texas High. If you attend the games, you can see the community interest in the team is not restricted to residents of TISD. In volleyball, the PG girls get the most press and they have earned it. In Tennis, again it is Texas High. With consecutive district championships dating back to 1990, they have earned the press coverage for the program. In basketball they all seem to get equal coverage as their is not one dominate program. In Girls basketball, I read more about Cochran's teams. They have earned the coverage. Soccer it is Pleasant Grove's boys. Again in Baseball the coverage to me is equal amongst the schools. In swimming, Texas High has the only program and it is a state power that deserves the press.
So objectively, I think the Gazette covers the programs that they believe the community has the most interest.

Okay, I'll chalk week 1 up to incompetence. Eastunit was merely applying your logic to the prior week when Gazette defenders were down playing LE's position in the paper then also. Don't you hate it when your own words come back to bite you?????
Not at all because I was talking about week 2. At best the LE game was the #3 sports story of the games played. Personally for me it was #4 behind PG. But that is not meant to be demeaning to LE in any way.
As a Texas High fan, I was embarrassed that Texas High vs HP overshadowed Arkansas High's state championship week. And it wasn't just the Gazette, the other media (radio & tv) coverage was the same. But the HP game sold the newspapers with the drama of the past series.

Week 1 was definitely LE vs Gilmer. I think it was established there were communications issues coupled with a deadline that prevented the story getting the attention it deserved. It happens.
As I predicted the Gazette gave the game a second article in the Sunday paper. They understood the importance of the game.
I was referring to the Week 2 games. If you are still stewing over the Week 1 game, you need to let it go. It can't be fixed.

It is unfortunate that LE has had to be up against 3 larger stories.
1) Arkansas High playing for their first state championship since 1977. Honestly I don't think that game got the coverage it deserved due to the other schools playing in the playoffs.
2) Texas High versus Highland Park was hands down the story of the week that people were talking about not just in Texarkana. The television and radio talk shows discussed the game throughout the week. On Saturday morning that was the lead story that the majority of the readers wanted to read. (The Arkansas game should have recieved 1/2 to 3/4 of the front of the sports page on any other Saturday).
3) Pleasant Grove 1st playoff run was a story. Everyone knew it would be short lived, but that was a game PG had a shot.
4) Liberty Eylau was playing in the "least" important game in the city. Important to LE fans, but not citywide. It was a game LE was expected to win. The only way the game was going to get more press, LE would lose. By all accounts that is the way LE fans felt given the poor turnout reported by LE fans.
I am not here as a Tiger fan, but as a reader of the Texarkana Gazette.

They beat Gilmer. But the knock is the fan support has not be very good.

Are we headed to pay per view?

congrats to Gene.

Congrats to North Lamar on a great season.

Thanksgiving week saw Arkansas HIgh win a state Championship in Class 6A in Arkansas. They are the lead story and Congradulations are in order.
Texas High beat Highland Park and Liberty Eylau beat Chapel Hill to advance.
Pleasant Grove was the lone casualty of the playoff season. It was a good season all in all for the Hawks.
One State Championship down and two to go.

I think it is an honor for the kids to play in Texas Stadium, but I hate the venue. There is a reason the Cowboys are abandoning the dump. In the DMN this morning the THS/Copperas Cove game is the only game this weekend. I will try to research our new oppenent.

Out of pocket and had to see the game on the DFW game of the week. HP had a good team, but the rubber bands making up the the Texas High defense held on 3 critical 4th downs and forced 4 turnovers. Webb could never get comfortable due to the speed of the the Texas High defense.
Mallett was given alot of time in the pocket and kept his poise the few times he was pressured. Texas High was able to handle HP with a base offense and defense. I did not see alot of trickery.
Great win.

Congrats to the Ags, they won the game.

I am keeping up with Calpreps for Division I - 4A. (We are assuming the same program).
Week 1 14-2, The two "upsets" were Nederland over Galena Park & South San Antonio over Corpus Christi Miller. Winners this week include El Paso Andress & Aledo (Region I), Texas High & Copperas Cove (Region II), Conroe Caney Creek & Lamar Consolidated (Region III), San Antonio Alamo Heights & Corpus Christi Flour Bluff (Region IV).
I am especially fond of the Region II picks.

I believe he is a Top 100 in Texas by Rivals for 2008.

Didn't want to play Gilmer because of a student athlete that transferred. Was probably the right decision on Canton's part. But they put the East Texas Classic in a lurch. Can't blame Tyler ISD.
-
I suspect Norton will elect to play in the metroplex next week. If Copperass Cove wins, it makes sense. If Dallas Wilson wins, it will still be a pro Texas High crowd as we will put more buns in the seats.
-
Texas High & Highland Park have met the last two seasons in what I think fans of both schools would call "Classic Games". I don't think either side can lay claim to "owning" the other. They were both nail biters to the the end. This one I suspect will be also.
Texas High is the last team to beat Highland Park in 2004. Highland Park was the last team to beat Texas High in 2005.
Both teams have good athletes and great coaching staffs. Only advantage I have seen is that Texas High has a bigger band. Not football astute, but bigger.

I think the coaching philosophy of the teams is similiar. Very balanced offense.
Texas High
Passing plays - 277
Rushing plays - 302
HP
Passing plays - 301
Rushing plays - 401
I find it interesting that HP has run 123 more offensive plays than Texas High. Texas High has only punted 18 times or 1.6 x per game. I guess Texas High has faced more run oriented teams content on grinding down the time on the clock - Tyler John Tyler, Arkansas High, Atlanta, North Lamar, Mt. Pleasant, & Nacogdoches.

Mallett has been hit late more often than he has been hurried. Half the time the referees don't call the late hit, because his protection has been so good and the ref is admiring the pass and misses the call.
Even is Ryan is hurried rarely does he get sacked due to his strength.

Massey has updated his database. He projects Texas High 25.1 to 18.4 with a probability of winning 69%. Take it for what it is worth as he had HP as a slight favorite and a 55% chance of winning.
