  1. The running events begin at 5. The final field events were this morning and early afternoon.
  2. Right or wrong, I would hazard to guess that most schools in the state of Texas are judged athletically on the success, or lack of success, with their football program.
  3. Were they supposed to? They were called for in a couple of events and the lanes were empty.
  4. What happened to the Tatum Lady Eagles Track Team at the Texas Relays this past weekend? There were two or three events on Saturday that I did not see them show up for or did I simply miss them? The boys were there on Saturday and did quite well.
  5. Any relation to the former Hallsville track coach from the 80's, Nolan Tomme?
  6. I look for Hallsville to start a lot of juniors next year as well on both offense and defense. There were several that started last year as sophomores even before the injury bug hit them. Cayden Ferrell will receive a lot of attention. He has started since his freshman year on defense; late last year he moved into the starting RB position as a soph.
  7. The final leg for Lufkin's 4x400 relay team slowed up near the finish line and signaled number one in the last 10m or so. They were well ahead and won easily. Not saying what he did was right or wrong but I have seen two similar events happen already this year in track. It happened at the PT relays as a runner was crossing the finish line. It also happened at the Earl Campbell Relays as one runner was passing another, in a sprint, he looked at the runner and said something to him as he passed him. What happens when a pole vaulter or high jumper jumps up and down in celebration after clearing a winning height?
  8. You are right, Coach McDaniel does do a fantastic job. All of the kids really respect him and I, as a parent, really respect what he does off of the field with these kids as well. He has his priorities in order. He is making men and women out of these students. There is no doubt where his heart is. The track program appears to be supported by the entire coaching staff (all sports). I, for one, know that the "football" coaches encouraged my son to run track. What makes the program successful is the depth and participation in all events. The last time I checked the non-glamorous events generated points just like the high profile events.
  9. Just assuming, but I believe the recurring shoulder issue may have had something to do with his not being invited.
  10. True. The bats were usually -2 (33"-31oz etc.) and were not "high tech" alloys.
  11. Ronnie Gideon from Hallsville in the early 80's. The old field was where the girls complex is now but turned so that left field was toward the current football field. In dead-center there was a little league field facing the varsity field (center fields were back to back). He would launch them so that they would come down near home plate of the little league field. Pat Powell from Marshall (mid 80's) hit a foul ball (just barely) down the left field line that landed in the visitor's stands at the football field at Hallsville. Richard Johnson from Gladewater was a man among boys.
  12. Prayers from Hallsville for this young man and for his success in defeating this disease.
  13. I was going to mention this to a previous poster that does not know much about Gray. I was student there at the time and was at this game. If memory serves me correctly he ran Jackson down as he was headed toward the north end zone and was on the visitor side of the field. He fetched him much like George Teague, of Alabama, ran down Lamar Thomas(?), of Miami, years ago in a bowl game and stripped him of the ball and recovered it himself. Both players demonstrated incredible closing speed. As far as recruiting and coaching goes this is a great hire.
  14. Hallsville has a Hall of Fame of sorts. I believe that it is for men sports only. There is the "H" Association which is a lettermen club for all male lettermen that are current students or alumni of the school. It has an annual banquet in April, with a guest speaker, when the current class of HOF'ers are introduced. I also believe that it is one of the longest running organization of its type in the state. I am not sure of the process but you can contact Thomas Richardson. He is the local historian and knows everything or can get you the info. He does a weekly article for the Marshall News Messenger. Contact him through the paper. Another avenue is to check with Carol Greer. She is the Information Officer for Hallsville schools. Hope this helps.
  15. I recognize that this is a bit tardy but it was only announced publically yesterday that retired Maj. Richard "Dick" Winters passed away on January 2, 2011. Winters was a private and humble man that rose to notoriety through the HBO series "Band of Brothers" of which he was the central character. I highly recommend the series and his autobiography "Beyond the Band of Brothers" plus any of his interviews are worth listening to also. Quite a man. He epitomizes what it means to be a leader. All of the those that he served with and under him give him nothing but the highest of respect. Yet another member of the "Greatest Generation" has passed.
  16. Sometimes making more money brings added pressure both from within and external. You feel obligated to provide a return on the district's investment in you which may equate into spending more time at the office possibly hindering your "internal" life. External pressures could come from the public by them expecting so much from you for the amount they are paying for your services. Perhaps more money brings more obligations.
  17. Do you like your job? The cost of living in a metropolitan area is usually higher, so is the pay increase going to offset the cost of the move? Do you feel like you could make the difference in the win/lost column? If not, has your value increased enough to move on in a couple of years? If you do make a difference then why move after a couple of years? It is not always about the money.
  18. I have a degree from the School of Architecture-UT Austin and the moment that I saw the picture of his house it immediately brought back memories of second year design. All of our projects were graded by a jury and you had to make your presentation to the jury and to all of your classmates. One person had a lot "going on" with their design and one of the jury members commented that it looked like the person had a backpack full of geometric shapes and randomly pulled them out to create a design. I agree that there is too much going on with this "house". Besides, from this photo it is hard to tell if it even fits into the context of the environment. I have had people that wanted me to design them a champagne house on a beer budget. To me, this is clearly a beer house on a champagne budget! I must say his coaching is a lot better than his design taste and with his wife being a Mary kay woman I would have expected more.
  19. What ever happened to Sturns? Wasn't he recruited by some big time programs and ended up going to Navarro?
