Man, idk what to say about Baylor and Tech. Even TCU now. Those schools relied heavily on experience/development than just 4 and 5* talent. They were the ones that would have senior vets starting on both sides of the ball. Now, none of them have that and it's glaring how inexperienced their teams are. And I dare say, not developed either.

I will forever loathe Texas Tech, but all hate aside I actually was nervous about playing them at the beginning of the year. I thought McGuire had something going and was going to be a helluva coach, but watching the few* Tech games this year.... yikes. They get outplayed and more importantly, out coached every single game. If I was a Tech fan I would be somewhere between absolutely miserable and furious.

TCU played with experience last year. Dykes is not the coach that Patterson is. They lost a lot of their offensive talent from last year and have become “once weres”. I do not see Dykes changing that either.

That's enough time to be ready for the Big XII game, and Murphy is not a significant dropoff. He's not as tight a passer but he's a much better run threat.

    UT will be fine.

What makes you think he is a running threat? Per MaxPreps the below is his high school rushing stats.  He is a pocket passer.

I agree the who do you get question is the big one. IMO you take a different approach than the Fisher hire. You don’t go after the guy who’s proven. You take a chance on a young guy whos hungry. Someone who is going to be coaching like their career depends on it instead of a coach that has accomplished everything he wanted and is now just drawing big checks. Hire the young guy, fill his staff with elite X’s and O’s guys and fix the lack of urgency this program has.

Good luck with finding the needle in the haystack coach that is “on the rise”. Texas tried it with Strong and Herman. We all saw how that turned out. Now we are giving Sarkisian a try and the verdict is still out with him. There have been other Fool’s Gold coaches like Matt Campbell and Fleck that have faded. In the end you just get lucky with a hire that works out. Just like recruiting teenage boys to play football, you just don’t know until they suit up and perform to expectations.

A true contending Team needs a solid QB. Just look at Belichick with the Patriots. Was it him or Brady that made that team? The Patriots have done zero since Brady left. Brady goes to the Buccaneers and they are instant Super Bowl winners with, IMO, a so so coach. Jimbo had that with Winston. He has failed to repeat that run. So, was it him or Winston? The schedule that FSU had the year they won it all was not all that. Certainly not to the level of the SEC.

  4. Yep. Already have my hotel reserved 6-8 weeks ago. Usually do it with my college roommate. We do Thursday, Friday and Saturday. I may miss part of Thursday this year due to a business trip. I will just fly back into Dallas instead of Shreveport to save some time.

Hallsville probably does lose some guys to Longview and Marshall (and others)...  but they also have guys on their roster that are from Longview and Marshall too.

The Bobcat's RB-1 (before he got injured) had been in the Longview program since middle school before transferring.

I guess if I was a RB at Longview and I had Taylor Tatum and lil Boosie and all those other guys ahead of me....I'd consider going elsewhere too instead of sitting the bench.  Why sit the bench when you can be RB-1 somewhere else?

We all gain and lose players to neighboring schools.  Be it for a specific sport, or issues with a coach, academics, family necessity, or what ever.

Until UIL tightens the screws on athletic transfers...... gonna continue.

Good luck to the Bobcats the rest of the way.  Seasons like they are having are pretty miserable.

Hallsville is not a football school.

They'll be calling for a new coach soon enough.

It isn’t necessarily coaching. The HC that is there now is solid guy and hails from Hallsville.  Hallsville loses football talent to other established programs to the East and West. Not enough consistent football talent that comes through. Just as other schools in the area attract football talent Hallsville does the same with baseball.

    Look at 1984 game.

1984 TX/OU game?  I was there.  Texas came in at #1 and OU was #3.  It was my freshman year at Texas and it rained during the game.  They tied 15-15.  This game precipitated the decline of Texas football for a number of years.  It was not a great time to be on the 40 Acres for football while I was there.

Was Mulkeroy from early 2000s ? I seem to remember a Hallsville back that was great. 2002 I believe.

There have been 2 Muckleroys that came through almost back to back. Kendrick and Roddrick. IMO Kendrick may have been a bit better but it just did not work out for him. Nothing bad. Roddrick played LB for UT and made the Bengals team for a couple of years before he blew out his Achilles. Both are great people and tremendous athletes. So fun to watch.

There were many outstanding RBs under Sleepy Reynolds.

George Johns in the late 70s was certainly among the best, if not at the top of the list. He was named 1st team All-State in his senior year.

A few years later, Roscoe Tatum was a standout. He was a member of a sprint relay team at TCU that set (or tied) a world record.

Under Coach Surratt, Keaontay Ingram certainly deserves a mention. He is now a member of the Arizona Cardinals. Got a few carries for them last week in their win over America’s Team.

As an outsider I remember many of the names mentioned here. I also remember a Johnny Ballous or something like that. Does he sit somewhere amongst these for Carthage?

I want to believe that Texas will be focused, then I remember the slow starts against Rice and Wyoming.  I still need to see Texas play full games all season long to say they’re a legit contender for a CC or a NC.  I think Texas wins but by how much will depend on how they start.

If they full games or not and are still undefeated, or perhaps a one loss team, they will be in contention for the CC or even the NC. It is a matter of wins and losses and not how the game is won.

First stop is Spencer’s to check out the posters. Second stop would be Alladin’s Castle to play Turbo (stand-up car racing game) then to Dalton’s to pick up a Louis L’Amour western paperback.

  12. IMO a college head coaching gig is a 365 day a year job. During the season you are coaching. During the “off season” you are recruiting or dealing with boosters. Always something going on. A pro coach does not have to “recruit” nor deal with boosters. So, probably has more time on their hands during the course of the year.

Additionally, in reality how many coaches really win 10 games per year consistently? Probably not too many out of the 130+ D1 programs. So, a lot of college coaches are staying busy trying to maintain what they have or improve upon what they don’t have.

The amount of NFL head coaches is about a quarter of the amount of D1 head coaches. Think about how many of them are or have been retreads with less than stellar returns. There are several that simply move from poor HCs to coordinators. With that I can see opting for the NFL over college.

I have a coaching friend that related a story to me:

He knew a HC at an Ivy League school that was a position coach at a D1 SEC school. When asked why he left the big time D1 program to go to the relatively unknown at an Ivy school, he commented about all of the stress in recruiting. He related that many times he would be on a recruiting visit in an inner city and would have to hit the floor of the house because of gunfire. His mental and physical health trumped his desire to deal with the happenings in D1.

I guess we'll have to see. Last year Texas dominated Bama everywhere but the scoreboard. I felt like they REALLY prepared for that game all offseason but couldn't replicate it the rest of the year. Do you think that happened this time? Either way, on talent alone, Texas will smack Wyoming.

Texas also lost their starting QB that game too for several games. Think that may have had anything to do with replicating it the rest of the year?

Yep. Score was closer than the game was. Bama got some squirly long TDs. Texas looked so much better in every phase of the game.

Honestly don't see anyone beating Texas this year.

I hope that you are right. Will have to wait and see. This win is for sure a morale booster and should give them a lot of confidence and hopefully not arrogance.
