  1. Hard to believe but here we are at Week 10 and in the last week of district play! The Alto Yellowjackets will host their old rival the Groveton Indians for the 70th installment of what was once one of the most highly anticipated games in the state. Many a battle between these two through the years. The “young ‘uns” do not realize as much the WARS between these schools because the rivalry has been somewhat lopsided in recent years and also because many years we ended up in different districts or not on the schedule at all. Now, mention the word Groveton to 90s kids on down and that word evokes some emotion. Both teams come into this game with wins on Friday. The Jackets “upset” the Normangee Panthers 56-23 while the Indians grabbed their first win of the season 30-26 over the Leon Cougars. The Jackets are looking to continue to improve and build on the success they are experiencing under the new/old system in place by Coach Gamble. With the win this past Friday, the Mean Sting moves into second place in the district standings behind Centerville. The Jackets defeated the Indians 48-38 last season. The last victory by Groveton was in 2012. The Indians lead the series 37-30-2. Who finishes district with the dub? 2. The Alto Yellowjackets will host the Normangee Panthers this Friday at Jacket Stadium in a key District 11-2A showdown; kickoff is 7:00 p.m. The Mean Sting blanked the Leon Cougars 46-0 Friday while the Panthers downed Grapeland 56-36. Normangee was projected by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football to win the district. The Panthers lost 15 seniors and return 10 lettermen, 5 on offense and 6 on defense. Normangee started strong in pre-district with wins over Bremond (49-13) and Iola (51-14) but then had a rough stretch with 3 losses in a row to Chilton (37-0), Lovelady (35-6), and Groesbeck (54-6). Since then though, they have won big in district over Groveton (42-21), Leon (55-0), and Grapeland (56-36). As best I can tell Alto and Normangee have only played twice: a 2018 bi-district playoff game where Alto won 47-16 and then in District last season, a 35-22 Normangee win. Who breaks the series tie of 1-1 and gets the important district win? ALTO ( 4-2 / 2-1 )W1 - TROUP 48 - ALTO 18 W2 - @ TIMPSON CANCELLEDW3 - PRICE CARLISLE CANCELLED W4 - ALTO 42 - WINONA 7 W5 - ALTO 47 - SAN AUGUSTINE 20 W6 - ALTO 49 @ GRAPELAND 14 W7 - CENTERVILLE 38 @ ALTO 16 W8 - ALTO 46 @ JEWETT LEON 0 W9 - NORMANGEE W10 - GROVETON W11- BYE NORMANGEE ( 5-3 / 3-0 )W1 - NORMANGEE 49 - BREMOND 13 W2 - NORMANGEE 51 @ IOLA 14W3 - CHILTON 37 - NORMANGEE 0W4 - @ LOVELADY 35 - NORMANGEE 6 W5 - GROESBECK 54 - NORMANGEE 6 W6 - NORMANGEE 42 @ GROVETON 21W7 - NORMANGEE 55 @ JEWETT LEON 0 W8 - NORMANGEE 56 - GRAPELAND 36 W9 - @ ALTO W10 - CENTERVILLE W11- BYE
  3. The Alto Yellowjackets will travel to Leon County to take on the Cougars this Friday. The Jackets lost a hard fought game to the Centerville Tigers at home last week 38-16 while Leon fell to Normangee 55-0. The Cougars lost 14 seniors from last season’s area finalist team and return 5 on offense and 5 on defense. Leon has wins over Dawson (22-20), Somerville (38-20), and Cayuga (38-6) with losses to Rosebud-Lott (60-22), Bruceville-Eddy (14-12), Centerville (54-8), and Normangee (55-0). The Mean Sting looks to regroup and get back in the win column. After starting district with a big win over Grapeland 49-14 the week before, the Jackets lost a very physical game against Centerville. The Jackets went toe to toe with the Tigers with a halftime score of 17-16 but were shutout in the second half for the first time this season. The Jackets travel to Jewett for the first time since 1991, the last time the schools were in the same district. Having only played 5 times, the Jackets lead the series 4-1. In last year’s contest Alto fell to Leon 30-8. Who gets in the win column this week?
  4. The Alto Yellowjackets will host the Centerville Tigers this Friday in what many believe will give the winner a big leg up on the district championship. The Tigers, like the Jackets, return almost their entire team from last season. Centerville defeated Alto in 2020 34-24 after Alto lead 24-6 at halftime. (This loss really stung!) Alto comes into Friday’s game on a 3-game winning streak having most recently defeated district rival Grapeland (49-14), San Augustine (47-20), and Winona (42-7); the loss was to Troup (48-18) in Week 1. Centerville has won the last 4 in a row. They have wins over New Waverly (27-14), Thorndale (42-28), Westwood (26-20), Bremond (56-7), and a district win over Leon (54-8); their loss was in Week 2 to Corrigan-Camden in OT (27-19). The Mean Sting is making progress every week under Coach Gamble’s new (old! Lol) system averaging 46 points a game the last 3 games. Centerville is playing with confidence having put up over 50 in the last two weeks. Both are improving on defense. Who starts district 2-0?
  5. DISTRICT OPENER! The Alto Yellowjackets will travel to Grapeland Friday to take on the Sandies in the District 11-2A D1 opener; kickoff is 7:00 p.m.! The Jackets are on a 2-game win streak after beating Winona (42-7) and San Augustine (47-20); the loss was to Troup (48-18) in Week 1. The Sandies handily defeated a much-improved Burkeville team 58-22 Friday and have wins over Shelbyville (50-30) and Cayuga (36-20); their two losses are to Elkhart (40-14) and Kirbyville (33-14). Both teams should be feeling confident after experiencing success in their respective pre-district schedules. Alto returns 20 lettermen while Grapeland returns 22. The Jackets have 8/8 returning starters on O/D while the Sandies return 8/7. Both are under new head coaching leadership. Grapeland defeated Alto for the first time since 1991 in last year’s contest 50-28. The Sandies are picked by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football to finish 3rd just ahead of Alto. The Mean Sting leads the series 39-23-1. Who gets the win and a leg up in district play? Interesting side note: Alto and Grapeland first played in Alto’s inaugural season in 1927, a 14-0 Jacket win. Grapeland began playing football 2 years earlier in 1925. Grapeland’s first win over Alto came in 1934 18-6. These two go way back! Lol
  6. The Alto Yellowjackets will host the San Augustine Wolves this week. The Mean Sting got their first win of the season 42-7 against the Winona Wildcats on Friday. San Augustine fell 62-7 to a talented West Rusk squad. The Jackets have only played one other game (a first week loss to undefeated Troup) and then had a couple weeks off because of Covid. The Wolves started the season with a win over West Sabine but have dropped the next games to Beaumont Kelly, Elkhart and then West Rusk. Both squads have new coaches this season. The Wolves are a young group and the Jackets are feeling confident after putting together a good win at home. San Augustine won last year’s contest 48-20. Alto leads the series 19-10. Who gets their second win of the season?
  7. The Alto Yellowjackets will hopefully return to the gridiron this coming Friday when the Carlisle Indians are scheduled to come to town. Alto HS dismissed classes Thursday and Friday because of high absences due to Covid and is set to resume school on Tuesday, September 7. The game with Timpson was cancelled. The Jackets and Indians have one common opponent: Troup, both losses. Alto fell 48-18 while Carlisle lost 41-26. Both squads are looking for that first dub! These teams have a special bond because of one night back in 2015 when Alto lost Cam’ron Matthews on the field of play during the Carlisle game. Total respect between these teams. That being said it looks like it’s Alto’s turn to win this one and I’ll take it! (See pattern below! Just sayin’!) Lol The series is tight with the Jackets leading 7-6-2. Who ya got?
  8. (Side-note: I asked Bear9T1 if he wanted to start this thread since Timpson is the heavy favorite! He said for me to go ahead. Lol) The Alto Yellowjackets (11-2A D1) will travel to Timpson to take on the #3 Bears (10-2A D1) this Friday. The Jackets stumbled out of the gate with a 48-18 loss to Troup while the Bears soundly defeated Frankston 61-0. The Jackets lead the series 30-16-1 but lost to the state semi-finalists 40-6 last year. The last time Timpson defeated Alto two years in a row was in 2003 and 2004. Seems like a tall task for the Jackets, who are learning a new system under Coach Gamble, but that’s why you play the game, right? The Jackets will have to limit mistakes (too many turnovers vs Troup!) and play with their hair on fire every down to have any hope of upsetting the Bears. I’m a homer and never pick against my Jackets so I’m going Alto by 7. Some folks are saying Timpson by fiddy. We’ll see Friday night! It’s the BATTLE OF THE BLACK & GOLD and IT’S ON!! GOOOOOO JACKETS! STING ‘EM!!
  9. The Alto Yellowjackets travel to Centerville to take on the Tigers this Friday at 7:00 p.m. The Jackets fell in the district opener to Grapeland 50-28 while Centerville was “upset” (?) by Leon 44-14. Best I can tell Alto and Centerville have played a total of 10 times with Alto leading the series 6-4. The last meeting was in 2016 in the bi-district playoffs with Centerville winning 49-28. Alto put up a season-high 28 points against a tough Grapeland team but is still looking for that first W. It’s 2020.....like Bizarro world. Covid pandemic, HS baseball cancelled, no track season, son and nephews’ prom and senior activities cancelled, masks, football cancellations, lost my grandmother and wife’s grandmother, my teams at every level HS, college, pro losing, etc etc....but in church this morning I gleaned some perspective. Lots to be thankful for and not the end of the world. Lol We press on and continue to work hard to improve each week. These young guys are gaining valuable experience and I am proud of each one of them for the work they have and continue to put in. Their time is coming. Who gets that first district win? On a positive side note: Alto had a groundbreaking ceremony last Friday for the new high school! Construction has started on a $10.5 million high school, coliseum, and elementary gym following the two tornadoes that ripped through our town in April 2019. Excited to see the finished product! Move-in date: August 2021.
  10. The Alto Yellowjackets open District 11-2A D1 play when the Grapeland Sandies come to town on Friday, October 4th. The Jackets fell to San Augustine Friday night while the Sandies defeated Burkeville. Though improving each week, the Mean Sting is still looking for their first win of the 2020 season. Alto leads the series with Grapeland 39-22-1 and last played in 2015 when they were in the same district; Alto won that game 48-28. The Sandies’ last victory was in 1991, a 41-21 win. Second season begins Friday! Who goes 1-0? Interesting side note: Alto and Grapeland first played in Alto’s inaugural season in 1927, a 14-0 Jacket win. Grapeland began playing football 2 years earlier in 1925. Grapeland’s first win over Alto came in 1934 18-6. These two go way back!
  11. The Alto Yellowjackets will travel to San Augustine to take on the Wolves for Week 5 pre-district action. The Jackets’ game with Winona was cancelled while San Augustine fell to Winnsboro. Alto leads the series 19-9 and has won the last 7 of 10 games but San Augustine has been beast mode and the team to beat the last three years as Region 3 champs. Who ya got?
  12. We WILL have a winner! Lol The Alto Yellowjackets will travel to Winona to take on the Wildcats in Week 4 pre-district action. Both teams have stumbled out of the gate with uncharacteristic 0-3 starts. The Jackets are young returning 2 starters on each side of the ball with 9 sophomores on the field, juniors who basically have 3 varsity games under their belts, and less than a handful of seniors. The JV was 10-0 so there is promise, but the young men are having to grow up and grow up fast. Last night was a “victory” of sorts as the Jackets held a strong Carlisle team to 12 points (2 field goals in the first half and a TD in the 4Q). Though the offense has struggled in the red zone, they are improving. Winona returns 21 lettermen with 7 offensive and 7 defensive starters from a 6-5 playoff team. The Wildcats are picked to finish third in District 9-3A D2 behind West Rusk and Harmony. Winona has faced Lone Oak, Frankston, and Elysian Fields. The series is tied at 2-2. Who gets their first dub of the season?!
  13. The Alto Yellowjackets (11-2A D1) will host the Timpson Bears (10-2A D1) for homecoming this Friday. The Jackets opened the season with a tough loss to Troup 27-0 while the Bears defeated Frankston 68-24. The Jackets lead the series 30-15-1 and defeated Timpson 45-0 last year while the Alto JV won 18-0. Timpson defeated Alto in 2004 by a score of 14-7. The Bears (bi-district finalists from a year ago) return 17 lettermen with 6 offensive and 7 defensive starters. The young Jackets are trying to find their groove with almost all new personnel in most positions. Who wins?
  14. The Alto Yellowjackets (11-2A D1) will host the Troup Tigers (9-3A D2) in the first game of this Covid season. The Jackets are a young group, returning 10 lettermen with 2 offensive and 2 defensive starters. Alto graduated 17 seniors and finished the 2019 season 11-1, while the JV Jackets finished with a 10-0 record. The Mean Sting is picked by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football to win District 11-2A followed by Grapeland, Groveton, and Centerville. Coach Meeks is beginning his third season in Alto. The Troup Tigers return 12 lettermen with 3 offensive and 6 defensive starters. The Tigers finished the 2019 campaign 7-5 overall and 5-2 in district. Texas Football has the Tigers predicted to finish 4th in District 9-3A D2 behind West Rusk, Harmony, and Winona. Interestingly, the Jackets and the Tigers first played in the inaugural year of Alto Football in 1927 (!) with Troup taking the win 48-0. The Tigers lead the series 14-15-2 (or 4?) with the Jackets having won the last 4 out of 6 meetings since 2000. The last time the two met was in 2015 when Alto won 30-7. Who goes 1-0?
  15. The Alto Yellowjackets (District 10-2A Champions) will take on their former district mate Joaquin Rams (District 11-2A Runner-up) in the area round of the playoffs. The game will be played Friday, November 22nd at 7:30 at Lufkin’s Abe Martin Stadium; Alto is the home team. The winner will advance to Round 3 to play the winner of Big Sandy (10-2A 4th seed) vs. Groveton (12-2A Runner-up). The Jackets lead the series 13-2 with the Rams winning the last two meetings. Who advances? ALTO ( 11-0 / 5-0 ) W1 - PALESTINE WESTWOOD 26-20 W2 - @ TIMPSON 45-0 W3 - NEW DIANA 50-0 W4 - @ GARRISON 26-7 W5 - @ CORRIGAN-CAMDEN 40-15 W6 - BYE W7 - @ BIG SANDY 41-14W8 - PRICE CARLISLE 29-7W9 - @ CUSHING 61-0W10 - HAWKINS 57-8W11 - UNION GROVE 50-15 W12 - CAYUGA 62-0 —————————————————————————- JOAQUIN ( 9-2 / 5-1 ) W1 - DEWEYVILLE 61-0 W2 - @ ORE CITY 34-13 W3 - SHELBYVILLE 21-22 W4 - @ CORRIGAN-CAMDEN 16-14W5 - GARRISON 45-23W6 - BYE W7 - @ LINDEN-KILDARE 60-15W8 - TIMPSON 21-14W9 - @ BECKVILLE 27-10W10 - TENAHA 38-0W11 - @ HARLETON 13-22 W12 SHELBYVILLE 39-0
  16. The Alto Yellowjackets (3-0) will travel to Garrison (1-1) to take on the Bulldogs Friday, September 20th. The Jackets are coming off back-to-back shutouts of Timpson 45-0 and New Diana 50-0. The #8 Bulldogs fell in a “dawg fight” to #5 San Augustine 36-28, after defeating Crockett last week 38-32. The Mean Sting has a big test this week! Who takes it?
  17. The Alto Yellowjackets travel to Timpson to take on the Bears in a 10-2A vs 11-2A showdown. The Mean Sting survived a close one with the Westwood Panthers, winning 28-20 at home. The Bears fell to Hemphill 56-39. Last year the Jackets took this one 51-27. I predict the black and gold team will win! Lol Jacket victory! Hope we can reduce our penalties and put our best foot forward this week. Good luck to both teams.
  18. Rematch time! The Alto Yellowjackets (8-3) will take on the Garrison Bulldogs (9-2) in the Area round of the 2A high school playoffs at 7:00 p.m. Friday, November 23rd at Nacogdoches High School. Garrison is home; Alto visitors. The Bulldogs defeated the Jackets 35-21 in Week 4 of the regular season in a pre-district contest. The score was tied 21-21 with around 4 minutes left in the game when Garrison pulled away. The Jackets turned the ball over 7 times in that game! Can the Mean Sting avenge the loss in Round 2 or do the Dawgs win their 10th straight game? ALTO ( 8-3 / 4-1 ) W1 - @ PALESTINE WESTWOOD 48-28 W2 - TIMPSON 51-27 W3 - @ NEW DIANA 32-14 W4 - GARRISON 21-35 W5 - CORRIGAN-CAMDEN 26-39 W6 - BYE W7 - BIG SANDY 21-12 W8 - @ PRICE CARLISLE 12-55 W9 - CUSHING 27-8 W10 - HAWKINS 55-0 W11 - @ UNION GROVE 34-0 W12 - NORMANGEE 47-16 GARRISON ( 9-2 / 6-0 ) W1 - @ TYLER TK GORMAN 41-42 W2 - CROCKETT 20-34 W3 - @ SAN AUGUSTINE 48-39 W4 - @ ALTO 35-21 W5 - JOAQUIN 35-15 W6 - @ LINDEN-KILDARE 49-35 W7 - TIMPSON 41-18 W8 - @ BECKVILLE 41-35 W9 - TENAHA 49-42 W10 - @ HARLETON 34-6 W11 - BYE W12 - GROVETON 56-27
  19. The Alto Yellowjackets (1-0) host their former district rival Timpson Bears (1-0) in pre-season football action. The Jackets defeated Westwood 48-28 in the season opener while the Bears took care of Hemphill 36-26. Should be an interesting matchup!
