Two squads that are looking to push their seasons even further than they did last season. Last year, Longview of course fell in the State Semi-Finals. Lufkin, fresh off their first season of no playoffs in over 20 years, had a chance if results fell their way going into the final week of the year coupled with a win over state ranked Lancaster. However, the Tigers were able to claw a win out and prevent the Pack from advancing for the second straight season. Last year, Longview saw it's biggest margin of victory in the series history with a 56-7 win at Abe Martin Stadium. By far the most points Longview has ever scored against Lufkin in Lufkin. This year, a couple different paths have seen the two teams come into Lobo Stadium sitting at 3-0 and 2-1. Longview, despite grabbing a late lead against state ranked McKinney, saw the Lions reverse the night once more and pull out a two-point win with a last second field goal. The Lobos proceeded to follow up with an absolutely dominating victory over Marshall before seeing their game against Tyler Legacy ended at halftime due to storms despite a 28-7 Lobo lead. Lufkin on the other hand was marginally tested in their first two outings against Tyler Legacy and Nacogdoches, before requiring a come from behind victory in the final quarter against A&M Consolidated. The two teams head into Lobo Stadium looking to start district off right, with Longview's John King sitting at a near perfect 17-2 in district openers since taking over the Lobos in 2004. Longview has only lost in 2012 and 2017 (Mesquite, Mesquite Horn) in district opener under King. Lufkin will try to upset the #2 state ranked Lobos by not only trying to win their first game at Lobo Stadium since 2003, a streak that stretches eight different contests, but also record their first win over the Lobos in general since 2016. The Lobos have won six in a row over their rivals to the south, including two playoff victories. Lufkin's last visit to Lobo came in the COVID-2020 season, where the Lobos knocked off Lufkin 41-5 in bi-district play. The six-game winning streak for the Lobos over Lufkin is tied for the longest Lobo winning streak in series history, tying the 1980-1985 six-game streak. Overall, Longview has jumped out to a 12-2 record against Lufkin in their last 14 meetings. Longview is currently on a 15-game home winning streak, and is 36-1 in it's last 37 contests at Lobo. The true rivalry week according to many Longview and Lufkin supporters kickoffs off district play this season as the 85th edition of the Lobos and Panthers set to resume the district side of the rivalry for the first time since 2003 as the two kickoff at Lufkin's Abe Martin Stadium. Longview, ranked No. 1 in the state according to Dave Campbell's Texas Football, heads to Abe Martin fresh off their second largest victory under head coach John King as the Lobos rolled over Tyler Legacy, 69-0, last Friday night. The win improved the Lobos to 3-0 on the season, and helped John King record the 200th victory of his career. King's 200th victory moved him into the top 100 all-time in victories by a head coach. Nine different Lobos tallied touchdown for Longview on Friday night, the most in a single game in school history. In the win, Longview also recorded their 18th consecutive victory over the Red Raiders, the second longest winning streak over a single team in school history. Lufkin, who improved to 3-0 to start a season for the first time since 2010, pulled one of the state's biggest upsets last Friday as the Panthers defeated No. 3 ranked A&M Consolidated, 31-14. The Panthers are riding high into 2022 one a young group that looks determined to get the Pack to the top of the state's elite. Fresh off a season that saw the Pack miss the post season for the first time in over years, Lufkin looks destined to get back into the post season run, as they enter into district play against a host of new teams. 7-5A Division I slides Lufkin, Longview and Tyler into a district with McKinney North, Lancaster, Forney, West Mesquite and North Mesquite as the seven teams get underway with competition this Friday night. Longview and Lufkin meet at Abe with the first district game between the two since 2003. Lufkin rides an 8-game district winning streak over the Lobos. Longview's last district win over the Pack came back in 1998. However, things are quite different between the two overall since the Lobos and Panthers last meet in district. Longview comes into Abe Martin Stadium holding a 5-game winning streak over the Panthers, and has won 11 of the last 13 meetings between the two schools. The last meeting between the two schools came in 2020 when the Lobos knocked off Lufkin, 41-5, in bi-district play. It was the largest Longview win over the Panthers since 1976. Longview has won two in a row at Abe, after having lost 10 of their previous 11 visits there. Longview last won three in a row at the stadium from 1989 to 1993. Longview also heads south for their district opener holding an 16-2 record under John King in district openers. For the first time since 2005, the Longview Lobos and the Lufkin Panthers were not set to face off in the 2020 season. While the teams had agreed to a non-district series prior to realignment, Lufkin being paced in a 9-team district ruined the hope for a game this season. Until, every thing fell exactly the way it needed to so that the two squads could meet for the 84th time. The two squads will face off for the 11th time in the post season, and for the 4th time in the post season in the last 7 seasons. The only season, in the last 7, that the two schools didn't meet when they were in the same class was in 2016. The Lobos have won all three of the previous playoff meetings in those last 7 seasons, including a 28-point comeback in 2014. The last playoff meeting came in 2017, when the two teams traded touchdowns back and forth the entire second half. Before Kamden Perry hauled in a touchdown pass from Haynes King with under a minute to go to bring home the 33-32 victory in the Class 6A Division II State Quarterfinals. The Lobos roll into their bi-district contest with Lufkin on a two-game winning streak that saw the Lobos outscore their opponents 113-24. Their latest victory came over the Tyler Lions, 58-14. The win for Longview was the largest margin of victory in their 97-game series with the Lions, and the 58 points was the first time the Lobos had ever scored 50 or more on Tyler High. Kaden Meredith's three touchdown gave him 55 for his career, tying the school record for most touchdowns in a career. Meredith was pulled after the first quarter, when Longview led 35-0. Longview is entering the playoffs for the 46th time in their history, and the 20th consecutive season dating back to 2001. The Lufkin Panthers clinched their 23rd consecutive playoff berth, dating back to the 1998 season, with their second best offensive performance of the season in a 56-13 victory over Waller. As Longview has dominated their last two opponents, the Panthers have rolled over their last two to the tune of a 114-13 scoreline. The Panthers were sitting at 3-4 on the season following their loss to College Station (45-21). After a forfeit win vs Cleveland, the Panthers saved their season with back to back wins over Conroe Caney Creek and Waller. Lufkin's 6 wins on the season are the fewest for the Pack since 2014, when the Panthers finished 6-5 following a 43-42 loss to Longview in the first round. Lufkin heads to Lobo Stadium for their 23rd all-time visit. Longview has won 7 in a row over the Panthers at Lobo Stadium, dating back to a 2003 14-0 loss to then #5 Lufkin. Overall, Longview has won 4 in a row over their rivals to the South. And following an 11-game winning streak by Lufkin, Longview has retaken control of the series, winning 12 of the last 16 meetings. The last three contests, however, have all finished as one score games. Last season, Longview rolled into Abe Martin Stadium and grabbed a 24-21 victory over the Panthers for just the second time since 1997. The two teams have faced off 10 times overall in the post season, with Longview winning 6 of the 10. The first playoff meeting came back in 1936, when Lufkin knocked off Longview 12-0 in the old Lobo Stadium. Longview got revenge the next season though with a 19-0 victory at Panther Stadium on their way to the 1937 1A State Title. The two teams wouldn't meet again until 1940, when the Lobos scored two 4th quarter tallies to knock off the Panthers 19-12 at Lobo Stadium. In 1942, Lufkin hosted Longview and ran the Lobos out of the stadium in a 33-0 beat down. In 1947, the Lobos were held to just 52 yards on the day to prove why they were massive underdogs. But it didn't matter as an extra point made all the difference in a 7-6 victory over the Panthers at old Lobo Stadium. The two teams wouldn't meet in post season play again until 2002, when they would meet for the third time that season. At an overcapacity Rose Stadium, Lufkin kicked a field goal in the dying seconds of the game to knock off Longview, 24-21, in the 5A Division II State Quarterfinal. Lufkin would again knock Longview off in 2004, before 27,000+ at Homer Bryce Stadium in Nacogdoches. Longview jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead in the second quarter, and led 21-17 heading into the 4th quarter. But Lufkin's Jovorski Lane was too much as the Panther won 31-21 in the 5A Division II Regional round meeting. Longview and Lufkin would meet at Rose Stadium again in 2014, when the Lobos knocked off Lufkin after coming from 28-point down and completing a two-point conversion with under 40 seconds to go in a 43-42 Lobo win. The two teams would have a rematch in 2015 at Rose, once again, where Longview rolled out with a strong second half in a 31-10 victory. And in 2017, Longview would advance to the Class 6A Division II State Semi-Final after Kamden Perry's leaping touchdown to knock the Panthers out by a 33-32 scoreline. Longview will be hosting fourth consecutive home playoff game as they enter Friday. The Lobos haven't lost at Lobo Stadium in post season play since a 24-14 loss to Bryan in 1984. It'll be a huge rivalry game in the 5A Division I Bi-District round this Friday. Another one in the storied history of their series. Longview trailed 12-6 at halftime before Lebus scored the winning tally in the fourth quarter from three yards out. In 2010, Longview grabbed a 17-0 halftime lead over Denton Guyer before the unthinkable happened. Despite still leading 27-21, and a chance to run the clock out, the Lobos still snapped the ball with 8/9/10 seconds left on the play clock. The Wildcats forced a fourth down with 17 seconds remaining and proceeded to block the punt. Quint Gardener hauled in a 15 yard passing score on the next play, and with the extra point, Denton Guyer would avenged their past two losses to Longview with a 28-27 win over the Lobos in the Class 5A Division II State Semi-Finals.

The phrase every high school football program aspires to be going into a new season. The Longview Lobos, get that honor in 2019. The Lobos finished off the 2018 football season with a staggering come from behind victory over Beaumont West Brook, 35-34, in front of over 48,000 in attendance at the home of the Dallas Cowboys, AT&T Stadium. The victory for Longview ended 81 years of frustration that has seen celebration after celebration come through the city since that December day last year. Now, the focus is reset and a new season of Texas High School Football is upon us. Longview will open as the defending 6A Division II State Champions with a trip to their arch rival Lufkin’s home stadium, that has seen many, many frustration be handed to the Lobos in recent seasons. The Lobos visit Abe Martin Stadium in Lufkin for the 25th time, suffering losses in 10 of their previous 11 visits to the home of the Lufkin Panthers. Longview’s lone win at ole Abe in that span came in 2012, when Longview grabbed a stunning 45-14 victory over Lufkin. Lufkin comes into the 2019 football season after suffering another disappointing end to their football season. The Pack saw their 2018 season end at the hands of the Rangers from Frisco Lone Star, 49-21. The loss was one of just two for Lufkin last season, the only other loss being an opening week, come from behind victory by the Lobos, 35-28. The Lobos come into the 2019 football season having set every single school record imaginable in the 2018 season. Longview has won 16 consecutive games, dating back to their 2-point loss to Waco Midway in the 2017 6A Division II State Semi-Finals. The 16 wins in a row is tied for longest in school history. The 16-0 mark was a school record, among every single passing offensive records there is. Longview’s offense in 2019 will have to overcome losing Kamden Perry, who set every receiving record there is to set at Longview High School. And they’ll get a huge test right out of the gate with state ranked Lufkin, who has suffered three consecutive losses to the Lobos. Longview will be looking for their first four-game winning streak over the Panthers since they recorded five consecutive wins over Lufkin from 1989 to 1993. Since ending the 11-game losing streak to Lufkin in 2007, Longview has recorded a 11-4 over the Pack…including a 9-2 record in the previous 11 meetings. In those 11 meetings, the Lobos have won three playoff contests, two fo them by one point. Longview and Lufkin have met 82 times previously. Up until this previous run by the Lobos, the two schools were neck and neck in the overall series. But Longview’s recent dominance in victories has pushed the Lobos up to holding a four game series lead. Longview’s 41 victories over the Panthers sits 4th all-time in school history in wins over a single opponent, while Lufkin’s 37 victories over Longview sits third in school history in losses to a single opponent. The 82 meetings are the third most meetings in school history. The two programs first met in 1932, a decisive 34-0 Lufkin victory at Panther Stadium. Since that 1932 game, the two teams have not met on a football field just 12 years (1934, 1935, 1938, 1939, 1941, 1943, 1944, 1945, 1946, 1950, 1957 and 2005). Overall, the two programs have met 10 times in the post season, 20 times in non-district play and 52 times in district play. The Lufkin Panthers are one of just three teams in Longview’s history that the Lobos do not have a winning record in district contests again (the two teams are tied at 25 wins a piece and 2 ties). Longview also does not have a winning record against Gilmer (3-5-3) and Jefferson (1-1-1). The Lobos will open he 2019 football season as defending champions for the first time since 1938. Longview opened that 1938 season with a 20-6 victory over Dallas Woodrow Wilson. Their winning streak did not ended from the 1937 season (16 games) until three games into the 1938 season, a 13-13 tie against Port Arthur Thomas Jefferson. The Lobos also open the season having won eight consecutive non-district games dating back to their last visit to Abe Martin Stadium in 2016 (a 35-24 Panther victory). It will be a season of high expectations for both programs, one trying to keep their newly earned crown and another trying to reclaim old glory that has alluded them since they themselves won their crown. And while there won’t be any TV cameras showing the game live as there were to start the 2018 football season, Longview and Lufkin will no doubt put on another show for all of East Texas to see. Welcome to the 2019 Texas High School Football Season. WEEK ONE 11-6A SCHEDULE: Longview at Lufkin (John Outlaw Memorial Field at Abe Martin Stadium) Mesquite vs Lake Highlands (E.H. Longview didn’t let up and rolled to a 42-14 victory over the Mavs at Lobo Stadium, behind 243 rushing yards. The Lobos overcame a 6 fumble night in the victory, and held firm against Marshall’s vaunted passing attack that threw for 39 tries on the night. In 2013, Longview met Coppell at Allen Eagle Stadium in the Tom Laundry Classic that saw the Lobos take a 17-12 lead over the Cowboys into the 4th quarter. However, Coppell struck back in the 4th, following a Longview touchdown by Dorian Leonard to increase the lead to 24-12. The Cowboys punched over three touchdowns in the final frame, including their final touchdown with just six seconds left, to grab a 32-24 victory over the Lobos.

In their 82nd meeting overall, the Longview Lobos will do battle with the Lufkin Panthers in the opening game of the 2018 football season. The Lobos, coming off a 13-2 season and an appearance in the 6A Division II State Semi-Finals in 2017, will be looking to continue their recent magic against the Pack. Longview has won 5 of their previous 6 meetings against Lufkin, and 8 of their last 10. Those numbers include three playoffs victories, which culminated in last season’s State Quarterfinal match up that saw the Lobos come from behind in the final minute to erase a 32-26 deficit and walk away with a 33-32 victory over their rivals. The two squads will take a break from meeting in the post season the next two seasons with Lufkin dropping to Class 5A Division I while Longview remains in Class 6A. Returning for Longview is a host of offensive support all over the field. But the highlight will undoubtedly by Longview’s junior quarterback in Haynes King. King took over for the Lobos following their 52-34 loss to Mesquite Horn four games into the 2017 season as a sophomore. King never looked back after getting his first start the next week against Tyler Lee, finishing the season with 25 passing touchdowns which ended as the 2nd best passing touchdown mark in a season by a Longview quarterback. The Panthers also returned their quarterback in Kewone Thomas, but will face to find a way to replace all everything running back in Isaiah Phillips who finished with three touchdowns and 237 yards against the Lobos last November. Longview and Lufkin will be meeting for the 12th consecutive year, in which they will have played 17 games in those 12 years. The two schools have met twice in 2007, 2014, 2015 and 2017 in recent seasons. Overall, the two schools will be meeting for the 82nd time where Longview has gained a 40-37-4 overall record in the previous 81 games. The series dates back to 1932, where the Panthers ran away with a 34-0 victory in Panther Stadium. The series has mostly remained closed through it’s nearly 90 year history, with Longview’s 8 game lead being the largest margin. Longview’s largest victory in the series came in 1958, when the Lobos take advantage of four Lufkin turnovers in a 62-0 victory in Longview. Lufkin’s largest victory in the series came in 1954, when the Panthers ran for over 440 yards and intercepted 4 Longview passes to run to a 48-7 victory. Longview and Lufkin have met 10 times in the post season, the Lobos having won 6 of the 10 including the last three. Lufkin will enter Lobo Stadium on a six game losing streak in Longview. The Panthers last win in the city of Longview came in 2003, when the Pack shut out the Lobos 14-0 in game that saw nothing but rain, rain and more rain. Since then, the Lobos have picked up a 31-24 victory in 2007, a 24-10 victory in 2011, a 55-30 victory in 2013, a 21-20 victory in 2015 and a 35-16 win in last season’s season opener. Held to just 179 yards on the day, the Lobos saw Thomas Bachman of Evangel score three times on the night in a 27-7 defeat at Rodney Duron Stadium. In 2007, the Lobos started hot to kick off the 2007 season with a 13-0 lead in front of 9,000 at Abe Martin Stadium. Longview was looking to defeat Lufkin for the first time in 11 tries, but it wasn’t to be as the Panthers climbed back into the contest before taking their first lead of the game with 1:09 to play behind a Jaborski Smiley pass reception.

Two bitter old rivals meet for the fourth time in three years in post season play after two unexpected victories propelled their teams to the 6A Division II State Quarterfinals. The Lobos are fresh off a victory that saw them fall behind 14-0 early in the 2nd quarter only to claw their way back before halftime and take the lead, never to relinquish it. One final grasp wasn't enough for #8 Klein Collins to come from behind and Longview held onto the victory, 30-24. On the other side, the Lufkin Panthers saw themselves dominate the Spring Westfield Mustangs before nearly squandering a 14-3 lead. The Pack were able to hold on in New Caney though, and bring home a defensive 14-11 victory. The two teams now turn their attention to each other. An opening week win for the Lobos over Lufkin, 35-16, might give some fans the idea that Longview will walk away with the victory...but leave no doubt that these are two very different teams from that opening week clash. A young Lufkin squad has matured and reeled off 7 consecutive victories on the season after falling to the Woodlands in their only other blemish. The Pack are into the State Quarterfinals for the first time since 2005 and are enjoying their highest win total in a single season since 2006 when the Pack finished 11-1. Longview, on the other hand, has since an even bigger difference as injuries had decimated the Lobos early in the season and a quarterback change four weeks into the season following the loss to Mesquite Horn has propelled Longview all the way into the final 8. Longview's Haynes King became the 3rd Longview quarterback to ever throw for 20 touchdowns in a season with his four touchdown day against Klein Collins, and improved himself to 9-0 as the starter of the green and gold. Longview's Jaylin Brown, fresh off a week where he broke the record for most career receiving touchdowns in a Lobo uniform, pulled in three against the Tigers to broke the single season receiving touchdown record. The two teams have faced off 9th previous times in the playoffs, with Longview holding a 5-4 edge. The two teams have faced off four times since John King became a coach at Longview High. Once in 2002 when King was an assistant, the Pack edged the Lobos 24-21 at Rose Stadium. In 2004, in King's first season as the head coach, the Panthers came from behind to defeat Longview 31-21 at Homer Bryce Stadium after trailing entering the fourth quarter. In 2014, Longview erased a 28-0 hole against Lufkin and came from behind to win 43-42 at Rose Stadium. And in their last meeting in 2015, at Rose Stadium, the two teams were level at 10 going into halftime before Longview dominated the second half and rushed their way to a 31-10 victory. Since ending the Pack's 11-game winning streak over Longview in 2007, the Lobos have rolled to a 9-4 record over the Panthers and more recently, since 2011, Longview has gained a 7-2 record over the Pack. It's a game everyone in East Texas was hoping to see for a 6A Region II Final when the playoffs began, and it's one we're getting. What a showdown Saturday night will be! The 108 season of Longview football begins the season with the 80th match up against arguably their biggest current rival, the Lufkin Panthers. The Lobos and Panthers meet for the 12th consecutive season, with the last season they didn’t meet coming in 2005. It’ll be the 58th year in the previous 59 seasons that the two schools have met. In the 12 consecutive years the two schools have played, the Lobos and Pack have met a total of 15 times with two bi-district meetings taking place at Rose Stadium. The two schools have faced off a ridiculous 20 times in the last 15 seasons. In current years, the Lobos have seen themselves take back the series from the Panthers (who had take control following an 11-game winning streak over Longview). The Lobos are 6-2 over the Panthers since the start of the 2011 season. Once again, the two teams have a chance of meeting in the bi-district round of the playoffs this fall, which would mark the two schools meeting for the third time in the last four years in round one. The two schools have met 9 previous times in the playoffs, which is three more times than Longview has met any other team in the post season. After no meetings in post season play in 55 years, the two schools have met four times in the playoffs in the last 15 years. Longview comes into the game looking to shake off a disappointing season, by Lobo standards. With the return to the top classification in 2016, the Lobos saw themselves win a share of the district crown for the second straight season (and 12 district crown in the last 13 seasons). However, having to travel to Beaumont in round one proved to be too much for Longview as the Lobos dropped their first bi-district contest in 11 seasons (dating back to 2005). It marked the first time under head coach John King that Longview did not each at least 9 wins in a season (finished with 8). The bi-district playoff loss was just the second under John King, both losses being by a single point (34-33 last season again West Brook, and 14-13 in 2005 against South Garland). The Lobos enter 2017 looking to improve on a horrendous defensive campaign that saw the team give up the 3rd most points allowed in school history. Lufkin welcome’s Todd Quick back as head coach for his 6th season as the helm of the Pack. The Panthers will be looking to turn 2017 back into the days of old, as no Lufkin team has finished with more than 7 wins since Quick’s first season at the helm when the team when on an unexpected run to round three in a 9-4 finish. Since that 2012 season, Lufkin has seen 5-6, 6-5 and consecutive 7-4 seasons with all four ending in bi-district losses. The Panthers, following Longview’s step, will be looking to improve on last year’s defensive embarrassment as the Pack allowed 391 points last season in one of the worst defensive outputs in school history. Since 2006, the Panthers have seen their struggles grow. Lufkin has amassed a playoff record of 4-11. Longview welcomes Lufkin to Lobo Stadium looking to hold onto a streak 14 years in the making. The Panther make their 6th trip to Lobo Stadium since their last victory in Longview back in 2003. Since, the Lobos and Panthers have had some outstanding duels in the venue. In 2007, the Lobos saw a 24-0 lead disappear before holding on to knock off the Panthers 31-24. In 2008, Lufkin held a 20-9 lead in the 4th quarter before the Lobos clawed back to take the lead. The Pack tied the game on a last second field goal as the game entered overtime. Three overtimes later, the Lobos came out victorious in a 45-37 showdown. In 2011, Lufkin took a 10-0 lead early before Longview rattled off 24 unanswered points in a 24-10 victory. In 2013, after the Panthers took an early 14-7 lead in the 2nd quarter..Longview scooted off for 35-points in the third quarter in en route to a 55-30 victory, one of the highest scoring games in the series history. And in Lufkin’s last visit in 2015, the Lobos led through the contest before Lufkin scored a last minute touchdown only to have their extra point attempt blocked in a 21-20 victory for the Lobos. Overall, the two schools will be looking for another fantastic edition of the series. The two schools remain just one game apart in the long, storied series. Let the 80th edition begin. Ford Stadium to be apart of the Tom Landry Classic against the Coppell Cowboys. Starting quarterback Bivins Caraway suffered a season ending second quarter injury after the Cowboys came storming out of the gate, in route to a 21-0 halftime lad for Coppell. The Lobos never got things going on the day, having to use a 3rd quarter extra point return and a last second hailmary touchdown to prevent from shutout by Coppell. The Cowboys racked up 287 yards passing, holding the Lobos to just 138 yards rushing in the 41-8 beat down. It remains one of the worst losses in the John King era for the Lobos.

The 107th season of Longview football begins with the first of Class 6A football for the Lobo program. Returning to the top classification, after just two years in the second highest classification in Texas football, the Lobos face off against a very, very familiar team. Longview and Lufkin headline the opening weekend of the return of Texas High School football with their 79th meeting against one another, and their FIFTH in just three seasons. Since the start of the 2002 football season (just 14 years ago), when the two teams were drawn into a round robin district schedule along with Tyler Lee and John Tyler, the Lobos and Panthers have met a staggering 19 times (including four playoff meetings). Recently, the Lobos have gotten the best of the Pack recording a 6-1 record against Lufkin in the past 7 meetings. Since ending the streak in the second meeting of their 2007 season, the Lobos have recorded an 8-3 record against the Panthers. The past two seasons have seen the two schools open against one another, and face off against one another in the first round of the post season. That possibility remains after the UIL realignment placed Longview in 11-6A and Lufkin 12-6A. With the height of the rivalry, has come some unforgettable games. Most recently, Longview’s 43-42 playoff victory in 2014 in which the Lobos overcame a 28 point deficit to knock the Panthers out of the post season. The following meeting, the 2015 season opener, saw just as close of a contest with Lufkin scoring late looking to tie the game only to have a block PAT be the difference in a 21-20 victory for Longview. The last meeting between the two schools marked the 9th postseason meeting between them. With the dominating 2nd half, the Lobos walked away with the 31-10 win and their 5th playoff win over the Panthers. This season, however, the Lobos head down to Lufkin to a place that has not been kind to them over the years. Longview has lost 9 of their last 10 games at Abe Martin Stadium, with their lone win coming in 2012 with a 45-14 victory. Lufkin comes into the 2016 season with a much different outlook as opposed to Longview, who is fresh off a visit to the State Quarterfinals and has gone at least three rounds deep in 8 of the last 9 seasons. The Panthers, 7-4 on the season in 2015, saw a loss in the first round for the first consecutive season. The Panthers also failed to reach the third round of the postseason for the 9th time in their past 10 seasons. That includes 7 losses in bi-district play. The only time the Pack have reached the 3rd round in the past decade came in 2012 when the Panthers saw a valiant comeback effort come up short in a 55-52 playoff loss to Plano West. The goal for Lufkin this season will be to finally punched through the bubble on their lack of success come playoff time. One thing is to be known for sure, when the Lobos and Panthers get together, something magically is set to happen. A rivalry started in 1932, continues 84 years later. The Lobos and Panthers meet for the second consecutive season in the bi-district round of the UIL playoffs, and the same setting will take place as the two squads meet for the 3rd time ever at Rose Stadium in Tyler. It will be the 9th time in Lobo history that Longview has met an opponent in back to back years, the first since meeting Rowlett in back to back bi-district games in 2012 and 2013, and the second time the Lobos and Panthers will meet back to back (1936 and 1937). Along with this game being the fourth meeting between the two schools in just the past two years, Longview and Lufkin will meet for the 9th time overall in post season play. Both teams have 4 wins a’piece. This is the fourth playoff meeting since 2002, with Longview winning last year’s game in record breaking fashion with a 28 point comeback and a two point conversion to pull out the victory 43-42. This all marks just the fourth regular season rematch in Lobo history, with three of them coming against Lufkin. After squaring off in the opening week of the season, a game that saw the Lobos block an extra point to pull away with a 21-20 victory, Longview went on to grab a share of the district championship and finish the regular season with an 8-2 record for the second straight season. Lufkin, on the other hand, finished 2nd in district play and finished with a 7-3 record with one win being decided by coin flip, their best record since finishing 9-4 in 2012. Not much hasn’t already been said about Longview and Lufkin when comes to their rivalry. It’s a rivalry that dates back to 1932, and has seen pretty much everything you could imagine. From 4th quarter comebacks, like Longview’s 12 point 4th quarter to knock Lufkin out of the post season in 1940, to back and forth games, like Lufkin’s 35-32 victory in 1955 that included a 46 point 2nd half. From the district title games of the 1970s to the overtime games in 1998 and 2008. From seeing over 30,000 at SFA in the 2004 playoff game to the unreal comeback in last season’s comeback victory for Longview. It’s a 77 game history, going on 78 after Friday night, that continues to be one of the best rivalries in the state of Texas. And one that is as close as could be. Only Longview’s one point win separates the two in any statistical record. It will once again come down to who makes the most mistakes. With the district championship on the line, it was the Lions who were celebrating at the end of the night having won the tiebreaker on penetrations 2 to 1. The Lobos’ lone penetration of the night ended on a fumble at the 13 yard line. In 1964, John Tyler book ended the 1st and 4th quarters with scores in the 2nd and 3rd to escape Rose Stadium with a 14-0 victory over the Lobos. Longview was held to just 86 yards on the night. In 1970, Longview was held to just 91 yards in the season finale as the Lobos fell to Lufkin, 7-0. Clifford Davis scored the only touchdown of the night from 9 yards out in cold, rainy night at Lobo Stadium. In 1981, Longview’s Donnie Centers saved the day against Pine Tree in two ways. First, he picked off a pass with 2:13 left on the clock on his own 2-yard line as the Pirates were looking for the winning score. Then, he caught the winning touchdown pass with 1:17 left from 36 yards out and the Lobos escaped Lobo Stadium with a 13-7 victory over cross town rival Pine Tree. In 1987, Terance Carter hauled in a 62 yard pass late in the first quarter and the Lobos never looked back as they knocked off Killeen Ellison inside Texas Stadium, 28-10, in the Bi-District Round. Ray Allison, Kevin Middleton and Mike Tidwell all added scores for the Lobos. In 2004, the Lobos traveled to Williams Stadium in Garland fresh off a 10-0 regular season. With Raider players talking all week in the Dallas paper, the Lobos put quick work to their bi-district opponents, as the Vondrell McGee show took over. McGee tallied five touchdowns, four in the first half, as the Lobos ran for 403 yards rushing and tallied up 515 total yards in a 49-27 victory. In 2009, Trey Metoyer caught a 69 yard pass in the first quarter to send chills up an upset over Longview fans early on against Whitehouse. However, in the 2nd quarter, the Lobos took complete control. The Lobos rushed for 378 yards on the night racking up 508 total yards and holding the Wildcats to -4 on the night in a 52-9 victory. 7 different Lobos tallied touchdowns on the night for Longview. It was Longview’s first home playoff game since 1984. In 2010, fresh off an upset of #7 DeSoto just a week prior, the Lobos opened their post season run against David Ash and Belton. Despite just a 3-0 lead after one quarter, the Lobos took complete control in the 2nd with LaDarrin Robertson rushing for three touchdowns. The Lobos rushed for 266 yards on the night and knocked off Tigers, 52-28.
  14. DATE: Friday, October 23rd TIME: 7:30 PM LOCATION: Lion Memorial Stadium Ennis, Tx I thought the Ennis fans would've made a thread by now about this one. I guess we're all down after our games friday. Both teams come into this game 3-1 in district and hoping to get a big win before the playoffs start in a few weeks. After defeating Lindale 28-27 at home, Lufkin goes back on the road to play the defending D2 champions, the Ennis Lions. Ennis comes into this game looking to redeem themselves, after suffering their first district lost in the 16-5A district showdown to John Tyler 40-29 at Rose stadium on friday. Last year, Lufkin lost in a 55-48 shootout at Abe in the final minutes. This will be our first time playing in Ennis, since I think our playoff games in the early 2000s(I'm thinking Waco and Garland?). So, who wins this one?

The last time these two teams met in district, it was a 52-45 shootout at Abe in favor of Lufkin. Who wins this game?

The Lobos and Panthers first met in 1932, where Lufkin walked away with a 34-0 victory at old Panther Stadium. Since then, the two schools have fought to a even line with last season's victory by Longview evening up the series at 35 all with four ties in between. Only two teams have played Longview more than the Lufkin Panthers have, the two being Marshall and John Tyler, but no school has played Longview more in the post season with 7 meetings in the post season between the two schools. After a two year run of being district teammates, the next five meetings between the two schools came in bi-district action, with Longview winning 3 of the 5. The next two postseason match ups came in 2002 and 2004, with Lufkin walking away with both games. Last season, Lufkin took a 3-0 lead after the end of the first quarter before the Lobos exploded in the second for a school record 35 points to take a 35-10 halftime lead. Battling back and forth in the second half, the Lobos knocked off Lufkin 55-30. The 55 points marked the second time in school history the Lobos had scored 50 on Lufkin, the last being in a 62-0 drumming in 1958. Longview managed 490 total yards against the Lufkin defense, the second consecutive season the Lobos have netted over 445 yards against a Panther team. The win also marked Longview's fourth consecutive win over the Panthers at Lobo Stadium dating back to a 31-24 win in 2007. The current three game winning streak for Lobos started in 2011 when Longview rebounded from a 10-0 deficit to knock off the Panthers 24-10. The two touchdown victory was the first time since 1997 that Longview had knocked off the Panthers by at least two scores. The next season, the Lobos improved upon stretch by defeating the Panthers by a 45-14 score..the largest margin of victory for Longview (31) since a 44-6 victory at Lobo Stadium in 1976. The more important stat for Longview though was their first win at Abe Martin Stadium since 1999, a span of eight games. The 45 points scored at Abe Martin Stadium by Longview was the most the Lobos had ever scored there, and the most scored in Lufkin since a 47-6 victory in 1959. Both teams enter the 2014 dropping down to the newly created Class 5A. For Longview, a return to their 2008/2009 district where Longview went 12-0 in district play between the two seasons. For Lufkin, they drop from the top classification for the first time since the 1920s. The Lobos are coming off a season that saw their own mistakes due them in with two defensive touchdowns being the final marker that ended a Longview season that set numerous school passing records. John King returns for his 11th season as Longview head coach, lacking just 10 victories to become the winningest coach in school history behind Doug Cox. The Lobos are 5-5 under John King in opening week play, having lost their previous two to Coppell. However, historically, Longview is quite impressive in opening week play. The Lobos have managed a 66-31-7 all-time record in those games, with the longest streak of consecutive wins ending in 1983 after 19 straight wins. The Panthers come into the 2014 season looking to rebound from their most disappointing season in quite some time. Todd Quick returns for his 3rd season as Pack head coach, looking to rebound from Lufkin's first losing season since finishing 4-6-1 in 1995. Lufkin saw their opening week unbeaten streak end in 2012 at 19 straight games when John Tyler knocked off the Panthers, 35-21. Lufkin returned to their winning ways in opening week games last season though, as the Panthers put on a show rebounding from an early deficit and finishing off with a 52-28 victory over the Lions. Despite the recent success for Longview against Lufkin, and their last visit to Abe Martin being a victory, Lufkin itself has not been a kind place for the Lobos in the past decade. Longview had one of the more impressive records at Abe Martin Stadium following their 28-17 victory there in 1997, improving their then record at the stadium to 9-4-0. Since then, a train wreck. The first five games of their eight game losing streak in Lufkin, the Lobos saw the Panthers completely dominate the first half of play only to have to claw their way back into it to make the game look more respectable than it probably should've been, with all five of the games being won by at least two scores. The closest Longview came to winning during the losing streak came in 2007, with Lufkin rallying from down 13 to score with 1:09 remaining in the game to win 16-13. In 2010, the Lobos again had a 13-0 lead in the 2nd quarter, only to have Lufkin hold the Lobos on fourth down at the Panther four as time ran out to secure the Pack 28-21 win. Longview will be rolling into Lufkin to start the 2014 looking for their first four game winning streak over the Panthers since a five game winning streak that stretched from 1989 to 1993. The longest winning streak for the Lobos in the series was a six game winning streak from 1980 to 1985. Lufkin's, of course, is their infamous 11-game winning streak that stretched from 1999 to 2007. The 11-game losing streak is by far the longest losing streak to a single team in school history, with only two other schools even reaching the six game mark (Marshall and Shreveport Byrd). Seven Maverick turnovers did the job as the Lobos grabbed a 28-0 halftime lead en route to a 49-16 season opening victory. Vondrell McGee marked his first two touchdowns as a Lobo in the second half. In 2008, Longview opened the season at the eventual state champion Allen Eagles and battled to a 7-7 half-time scoreline. However, five fumbles (one lost) did Longview in during the second half as two touchdowns in the 3rd quarter were all the Eagles needed to knock off the Lobos 21-7. Longview out gained the Eagles 343 to 260 but it wasn't enough. The loss was the third straight season opening game loss for the Lobos, the longest stretch of opening season game losses since the early 1950s.
