  1. The Alto Yellowjackets open District 11-2A D1 play when the Grapeland Sandies come to town on Friday, October 4th. The Jackets fell to San Augustine Friday night while the Sandies defeated Burkeville. Though improving each week, the Mean Sting is still looking for their first win of the 2020 season. Alto leads the series with Grapeland 39-22-1 and last played in 2015 when they were in the same district; Alto won that game 48-28. The Sandies’ last victory was in 1991, a 41-21 win. Second season begins Friday! Who goes 1-0? Interesting side note: Alto and Grapeland first played in Alto’s inaugural season in 1927, a 14-0 Jacket win. Grapeland began playing football 2 years earlier in 1925. Grapeland’s first win over Alto came in 1934 18-6. These two go way back!
  2. The Alto Yellowjackets will travel to San Augustine to take on the Wolves for Week 5 pre-district action. The Jackets’ game with Winona was cancelled while San Augustine fell to Winnsboro. Alto leads the series 19-9 and has won the last 7 of 10 games but San Augustine has been beast mode and the team to beat the last three years as Region 3 champs. Who ya got?
  3. We WILL have a winner! Lol The Alto Yellowjackets will travel to Winona to take on the Wildcats in Week 4 pre-district action. Both teams have stumbled out of the gate with uncharacteristic 0-3 starts. The Jackets are young returning 2 starters on each side of the ball with 9 sophomores on the field, juniors who basically have 3 varsity games under their belts, and less than a handful of seniors. The JV was 10-0 so there is promise, but the young men are having to grow up and grow up fast. Last night was a “victory” of sorts as the Jackets held a strong Carlisle team to 12 points (2 field goals in the first half and a TD in the 4Q). Though the offense has struggled in the red zone, they are improving. Winona returns 21 lettermen with 7 offensive and 7 defensive starters from a 6-5 playoff team. The Wildcats are picked to finish third in District 9-3A D2 behind West Rusk and Harmony. Winona has faced Lone Oak, Frankston, and Elysian Fields. The series is tied at 2-2. Who gets their first dub of the season?!
  4. The Alto Yellowjackets (11-2A D1) will host the Timpson Bears (10-2A D1) for homecoming this Friday. The Jackets opened the season with a tough loss to Troup 27-0 while the Bears defeated Frankston 68-24. The Jackets lead the series 30-15-1 and defeated Timpson 45-0 last year while the Alto JV won 18-0. Timpson defeated Alto in 2004 by a score of 14-7. The Bears (bi-district finalists from a year ago) return 17 lettermen with 6 offensive and 7 defensive starters. The young Jackets are trying to find their groove with almost all new personnel in most positions. Who wins?
  5. The Alto Yellowjackets (11-2A D1) will host the Troup Tigers (9-3A D2) in the first game of this Covid season. The Jackets are a young group, returning 10 lettermen with 2 offensive and 2 defensive starters. Alto graduated 17 seniors and finished the 2019 season 11-1, while the JV Jackets finished with a 10-0 record. The Mean Sting is picked by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football to win District 11-2A followed by Grapeland, Groveton, and Centerville. Coach Meeks is beginning his third season in Alto. The Troup Tigers return 12 lettermen with 3 offensive and 6 defensive starters. The Tigers finished the 2019 campaign 7-5 overall and 5-2 in district. Texas Football has the Tigers predicted to finish 4th in District 9-3A D2 behind West Rusk, Harmony, and Winona. Interestingly, the Jackets and the Tigers first played in the inaugural year of Alto Football in 1927 (!) with Troup taking the win 48-0. The Tigers lead the series 14-15-2 (or 4?) with the Jackets having won the last 4 out of 6 meetings since 2000. The last time the two met was in 2015 when Alto won 30-7. Who goes 1-0?
  6. The Alto Yellowjackets (District 10-2A Champions) will take on their former district mate Joaquin Rams (District 11-2A Runner-up) in the area round of the playoffs. The game will be played Friday, November 22nd at 7:30 at Lufkin’s Abe Martin Stadium; Alto is the home team. The winner will advance to Round 3 to play the winner of Big Sandy (10-2A 4th seed) vs. Groveton (12-2A Runner-up). The Jackets lead the series 13-2 with the Rams winning the last two meetings. 7. The 2019 football season is on the horizon! The first prediction for District 10-2A that I have seen was on Twitter today by Scouting Report (@SR_scouting) SO I thought I would go ahead and start this thread. I like the way this looks.
  8. The Alto Yellowjackets (District 10-2A Champions) will take on their former district mate Cayuga Wildcats (District 9-2A 4th seed) in the bi-district round of the playoffs. The game will be played Thursday, November 14th at 7:00 p.m. at Jacksonville’s historic and newly renovated Tomato Bowl (hosting 1st playoff in 16 years!); Alto is the visitor. The winner will play the winner of Joaquin (11-2A Runner-up) vs. Shelbyville (12-2A 3rd seed). Who advances? ALTO ( 10-0 / 5-0 ) W1 - PALESTINE WESTWOOD 26-20 W2 - @ TIMPSON 45-0 W3 - NEW DIANA 50-0 W4 - @ GARRISON 26-7 W5 - @ CORRIGAN-CAMDEN 40-15 W6 - BYE W7 - @ BIG SANDY 41-14 W8 - PRICE CARLISLE 29-7 W9 - @ CUSHING 61-0 W10 - HAWKINS 57-8 W11 - UNION GROVE 50-15 CAYUGA ( 4-6 / 2-3 ) W1 - @ FROST 32-0 W2 - GRAPELAND 14-38 W3 - @ MT. 9. The #8 Alto Yellowjackets will host the Union Grove Lions on Friday, November 8 on Cam’Ron Matthews Field at Jacket Stadium. It will be Senior Night and what a senior class it is! This group of 17 young men have done something very special, leading the way to an undefeated 9-0 season. The Jackets clinched the district championship with the win over Hawkins (57-8). There is nothing more they had rather do than finish Senior Night on our home field with a win to take us to 10-0 for the first time since 2015. Will the Mean Sting take care of UG or do the upset-minded Lions prevail?
  10. The Alto Yellowjackets will host the red-hot Hawkins Hawks on Friday, November 1st. The Mean Sting is undefeated on the season for the first time since 2015 and the Hawks enter this game brimming with confidence after upsetting Big Sandy 18-6. Both teams have qualified for the playoffs. Can the Jackets take care of business enroute to 9-0 or does Hawkins carry an undefeated district record to Carlisle next week? Who ya got?
  11. The Alto Yellowjackets will travel to Cushing to take on the Bearkats Friday, October 25th. The Jackets lead the series 13-1 with that one loss coming in 1992. On paper, this game is a mismatch but we play the game for a reason! Who ya got?
  12. The Alto Yellowjackets (6-0 | 1-0) will host the Carlisle Indians (4-2 | 1-0) in a key District 10-2A contest Friday, October 18th. The winner has a leg up in the district championship race. The Jackets were soundly defeated last year at Carlisle and hope to avenge the loss this season at home. It’s been since 2016 that Carlisle played at Alto. The series is tight with the Jackets holding a slight edge 6-5-2. Who wins the 2019 version of Alto-Carlisle? 2018 Price Carlisle 55-12 DIS 2017 Alto 31-28 DIS 2016 Price Carlisle 28-7 DIS 2015 Alto 21-8 DIS 2014 Alto 52-34 DIS 2009 Alto 35-0 DIS 2008 Alto 28-0 DIS 1965 Alto 20-0 1957 Price Carlisle 26-7 1956 Tie 12-12 1953 Price Carlisle 7-0 1952 Tie 6-6 1939 Price Carlisle 22-0
  13. SECOND SEASON: District play begins! The Alto Yellowjackets travel to Big Sandy to take on the Wildcats in the District 10-2A opener on Friday, October 11th. The Jackets are 5-0 for the first time since 2015 with wins over Westwood, Timpson, New Diana, Garrison, and Corrigan-Camden. Big Sandy has losses to San Augustine, Timpson, Mineola, and Rivercrest; they defeated Alba-Golden in Week 2. The Jackets took this one last season 21-12. Who starts district 1-0?
  14. The Alto Yellowjackets (4-0) will travel to Corrigan-Camden (3-1) in hopes of avenging last year’s 39-26 loss to the Bulldogs at Jacket Stadium. The Mean Sting defense is playing lights out in the last 3 games with 2 shut outs (Timpson/New Diana), allowing one touchdown to Garrison. The Bulldogs fell to Joaquin 16-14. This is the final tuneup for district play for both teams. Who takes the dub?
  15. The Alto Yellowjackets (3-0) will travel to Garrison (1-1) to take on the Bulldogs Friday, September 20th. The Jackets are coming off back-to-back shutouts of Timpson 45-0 and New Diana 50-0. The #8 Bulldogs fell in a “dawg fight” to #5 San Augustine 36-28, after defeating Crockett last week 38-32. The Mean Sting has a big test this week! Who takes it?
  16. The Alto Yellowjackets (2-0) host the New Diana Eagles (2-0) for Homecoming 2019 in pre-district action on Friday the 13th! The Jackets won 32-14 last year in New Diana. Both teams come into this game looking to stay undefeated. The Jackets have defeated Palestine Westwood 28-20 and Timpson 45-0 while New Diana handily defeated Harmony 44-14 and White Oak 34-14 in statement games. This looks like an Eagle team that is on a roll! The Jackets, meanwhile found their groove in Week 2 playing with fewer penalties and turnovers. Who wins this game? Can’t imagine the Mean Sting losing a homecoming game, but it will definitely be a Battle Royale!
  17. The Alto Yellowjackets travel to Timpson to take on the Bears in a 10-2A vs 11-2A showdown. The Mean Sting survived a close one with the Westwood Panthers, winning 28-20 at home. The Bears fell to Hemphill 56-39. Last year the Jackets took this one 51-27. I predict the black and gold team will win! Lol Jacket victory! Hope we can reduce our penalties and put our best foot forward this week. Good luck to both teams.
  18. The Alto Yellowjackets open the 2019 football season against the Palestine Westwood Panthers at Jacket Stadium. The Jackets finished the 2018 season with an 8-4 record while the Panthers ended 1-9. Both teams are under second year coaches, Ricky Meeks (Alto) and Richard Bishop (Westwood). The Mean Sting won last year’s meeting 48-28. Both teams hope to take a step forward this season, and a win on this night would be a great start! Lots of returning starters on both teams: Alto with 8/7 and Westwood 6/6. I believe Alto has enough experience and talent to take this one by several touchdowns. I’ll say 54-14. (I’m hoping our defense has improved that much! Lol We’ll see!)
  19. Today begins the 2018-19 high school baseball season! Four 2A schools (Alto, Cushing, Douglass, Groveton) and three 1A schools (Apple Springs, Kennard, Wells) come together to comprise District 22. The 2A schools will play each other three times in district play and the 1A schools one time. Douglass (28-7 | 11-1 Regional Finalist in 2018) is the pre-season #2 team in the state while Cushing (12-10-1 | 7-5 Area Finalist) also gets a mention. Groveton (14-10 | 9-3 Regional Quarterfinalist) is just two years removed from playing in the state tournament while Alto returns six starters from a 26-6 | 10-2 Area Finalist team with a talented freshman group coming. Should be a competitive district! http://txhighschoolbaseball.com/2a/22-2a/ http://txhighschoolbaseball.com/2a/diamond-pro-thsb-preseason-2a-top-20/
  20. ALTO BASEBALL: Day 1 (Thursday 2/21) of the Hemphill Tournament has already been cancelled. Is there a school hosting a tournament this week/weekend that could add another team? Please private message me or contact head baseball coach Steve Villani at [email protected]. Thanks!
  21. The first day of practice is days away!! The new District 10-2A consists of Alto, Big Sandy, Carlisle, Cushing, Hawkins, and Union Grove. Time to start the football talk! Week 1: Alto @ Palestine Westwood Big Sandy vs. San Augustine @ Beckville Sabine @ Carlisle Cushing @ Chilton Hawkins @ Alba-Golden Union Grove @ Simms Bowie EXCITED for this season to begin! How do you think this district will shake out?
  22. Rematch time! The Alto Yellowjackets (8-3) will take on the Garrison Bulldogs (9-2) in the Area round of the 2A high school playoffs at 7:00 p.m. Friday, November 23rd at Nacogdoches High School. Garrison is home; Alto visitors. The Bulldogs defeated the Jackets 35-21 in Week 4 of the regular season in a pre-district contest. The score was tied 21-21 with around 4 minutes left in the game when Garrison pulled away. The Jackets turned the ball over 7 times in that game! Can the Mean Sting avenge the loss in Round 2 or do the Dawgs win their 10th straight game? ALTO ( 8-3 / 4-1 ) W1 - @ PALESTINE WESTWOOD 48-28 W2 - TIMPSON 51-27 W3 - @ NEW DIANA 32-14 W4 - GARRISON 21-35 W5 - CORRIGAN-CAMDEN 26-39 W6 - BYE W7 - BIG SANDY 21-12 W8 - @ PRICE CARLISLE 12-55 W9 - CUSHING 27-8 W10 - HAWKINS 55-0 W11 - @ UNION GROVE 34-0 W12 - NORMANGEE 47-16 GARRISON ( 9-2 / 6-0 ) W1 - @ TYLER TK GORMAN 41-42 W2 - CROCKETT 20-34 W3 - @ SAN AUGUSTINE 48-39 W4 - @ ALTO 35-21 W5 - JOAQUIN 35-15 W6 - @ LINDEN-KILDARE 49-35 W7 - TIMPSON 41-18 W8 - @ BECKVILLE 41-35 W9 - TENAHA 49-42 W10 - @ HARLETON 34-6 W11 - BYE W12 - GROVETON 56-27
  23. The Alto Yellowjackets (District 10-2A Runner-Up) will take on the Normangee Panthers (District 9-2A 3rd seed) in the bi-district round of the Texas HS state playoffs. The game will be played Thursday, November 15th at 7:00 p.m. at Monte Jack Driscoll Stadium on the campus of Crockett High School; Alto is the home team. This is the first meeting between the two schools. The winner will play the winner of Garrison (11-2A Champion) vs. Groveton (12-2A 4th seed). ALTO ( 7-3 / 4-1 ) W1 - @ PALESTINE WESTWOOD 48-28 W2 - TIMPSON 51-27 W3 - @ NEW DIANA 32-14 W4 - GARRISON 21-35 W5 - CORRIGAN-CAMDEN 26-39 W6 - BYE W7 - BIG SANDY 21-12 W8 - @ PRICE CARLISLE 12-55 W9 - CUSHING 27-8 W10 - HAWKINS 55-0 W11 - @ UNION GROVE 34-0 NORMANGEE ( 5-5 / 3-2 ) W1 - @ BREMOND 23-64 W2 - IOLA 26-13 W3 - @ LOVELADY 14-66 W4 - GRAPELAND 18-47 W5 - @ NEW WAVERLY 23-3 W6 - BYE W7 - LEON 17-41 W8 - @ CAYUGA 6-0 W9 - CENTERVILLE 0-22 W10 - CROSS ROADS 57-0 W11 - @ KERENS 28-0
  24. The Alto Yellowjackets travel to Union Grove for the first time ever on Friday, November 9th to take on the Lions. This is the last game of the regular season before the bi-district round. Alto has secured the 2nd seed behind Carlisle while Union Grove was eliminated from playoff contention by Cushing last Friday. The Jackets and Lions have met one time and that was in the 2014 area round of the playoffs at West Rusk HS; the Mean Sting won 47-0. UG in the upset or Alto rolls?
  25. The Alto Yellowjackets will travel to Hawkins on November 2nd to take on the Hawks. The Jackets rebounded Friday with a win over Cushing while Hawkins fell to Big Sandy. The last time the Mean Sting played Hawkins was a 41-14 win in a regional playoff game on 11/21/2008 in Bullard. Before that, it was 1983 when the two schools were in the same district, a 26-7 Alto win. Alto leads the series 3-1-1. Not much history between these teams, but here we are in a district matchup. Who takes it?
