LAST FIVE GAMES IN SERIES 12.22.2018 - Longview 35, Beaumont West Brook 34 - AT&T Stadium 11.17.2017 - Longview 42, Beaumont West Brook 21 - Lobo Stadium 11.11.2016 - Beaumont West Brook 34, Longview 33 - C.A. Thomas Multipurpose Center FULL GAME LOG GAME PREVIEW & SERIES REVIEW Anytime you can defeat a team, no matter who it is, 16-games in a row..it is impressive. Longview held serve at home after a back and forth first half, to do just that. The Lobos used a 21-0 second half to pull away from the improved Legacy Red Raiders and stormed to a 37-14 victory. Longview's defense won the day, which many expected would have to happen if the Lobos were going to have success this season. With the win, the Lobos won their 16th in a row over the Red Raiders, the second longest such winning streak over a single opponent in school history. The Red Raiders last defeated Longview back in 2003. This was, however, the closest Legacy had been entering the fourth quarter (two scores) since the 2010 contest. With the win, the Lobos have secured back to back wins after opening the 2020 season the disappointing blow out loss to Temple. Longview now turns their attention to their non-district contest of the season as they take on a familiar foe in Beaumont West Brook. The Bruins, fresh of a 2019 season that ended disappointingly in the second round much like it did for the Lobos, come into Lufkin's Abe Martin Stadium with a 1-1 record. The Bruins opened the year with a 66-63 loss to Tomball Memorial before knocking off private school Bellaire Episcopal 56-10 last week. The Bruins no doubt will be looking for some momentum as they head into an extremely tough district next week, opening with Galena Park North Shore. This will be the fourth meeting between the two schools, and the first non-district meeting. Longview and Beaumont West Brook opened their histories against one another with a bi-district contest in 2016, when the Lobos had to make the trip down to Beaumont despite being tied for the No. 1 seed in Division II. Longview led most of the way, until a fumble inside the 15 yard line in the dying minutes of the game gave the Bruins a chance, trailing by six. West Brook went the distance and the extra point put the Bruins on top for good. Longview's Chris Kessler missed a long field goal to end the game as West Brook held on. Longview, the next year, would welcome the Bruins to Lobo Stadium and after a tight first half, the Lobos would run away with things in route to a 42-21 win. In the last meeting, Longview and West Brook full cemented themselves in history meeting in the Class 6A Division II State Championship in 2018, that saw the third largest crowd to ever watch a Texas High School Football game cram into AT&T Stadium. This time, it was West Brook who led nearly the entire way until Longview exploded in the fourth quarter to take the lead by one point. The Lobos would seal the contest with a fumble in the final four minutes, and the celebration of 81-years of frustration would erupt inside the stadium that Jerry built. It won't be quite that feeling on Thursday night, as the Lobos and Bruins meet in a socially distant Abe Martin Stadium in Lufkin. But plenty of fireworks are expected in this great match up for both teams to end non-district play. LAST FIVE GAMES IN SERIES 11.17.2017 - Longview 42, Beaumont West Brook 21 - Lobo Stadium 11.11.2016 - Beaumont West Brook 34, Longview 33 - CA Thomas Multipurpose Center FULL GAME LOG GAME PREVIEW & SERIES REVIEW And so…we meet again. A grudge match for the Class 6A Division II State Championship. Longview and Beaumont West Brook had never met before the 2016 Bi-District contest. After Saturday, they will have met three consecutive years in the post season. In 2016, Longview, despite winning a co-share of the district championship, had to travel to Beaumont to take on the Bruins. The Lobos lead most of the way, grabbing a 24-14 lead midway through the 3rd quarter. The two squads continued to trade scores before a Bruin touchdown, followed by a blocked PAT return by the Lobos gave Longview a 33-27 lead late into the 4th quarter. Longview was driving to score late in that 4th quarter before a fumble by D’Crayvan Polk on the 10 yard line gave the Bruins hope. West Brook drove the rest of the way, including completing a fourth and six inside the final two minutes of play, and scored the winning touchdown and extra point to knock off the Lobos, 34-33. The two schools would meet the following year, in 2017, at Lobo Stadium. The Lobos and Bruins would battle to a 7-6 Lobo lead at halftime before a 28-point 2nd quarter would explode the Lobos into a gigantic lead. The Bruins would tally late on a 4th quarter strike, but the game was done. The Lobos rolled 42-21. And so, the 2018 edition of this new rivalry will be held on an even higher stage. The Class 6A Division II State Title game. Longview improved to a program best 15-0 with a thrilling 45-42 win over an upstart Amarillo Tascosa team. The Lobos led 35-7 at one point before the Rebels turned the switch on in the second half. Longview grabbed a 45-28 lead with five minutes left, but penalties began to hurt the Lobos and the Rebels drew within 45-35. An onside kick followed by a hook and ladder play brought the Rebs to the final score of 45-42. Longview recovered the onside kick and Haynes King picked up the lone first down needed and it was done. Longview advanced to it’s 5th all-time state championship game, and first since 2009. The Lobos will be looking to end a streak that dates back to 1937. It’s a streak that has been mocked by East Texans and the rest of the state for ages. Longview is the program that can’t finish. 81 years the Lobos have gone without a state championship. And for the 4th time since that 1937 1A State Title, the Lobos will get their shot to end it. Beaumont West Brook improved to 13-2 with a 35-30 victory over favored Austin Westlake in their State Semi-Final. The Bruins have been on a roll in their last 7 games, since falling hard to Galena Park North Shore, who will be in the 6A Division I State Title game next Saturday. The Bruins return to the State Championship game for the first time since 1982, their first season of varsity football when West Brook won their only State Title. LAST FIVE GAMES IN SERIES 11.11.2016 - Beaumont West Brook 34, Longview 33 - C.A. Thomas Multipurpose Center FULL GAME LOG GAME PREVIEW & SERIES REVIEW And so we meet again. For the second consecutive season, the Longview Lobos and the Beaumont West Brook Bruins will face off in the 6A Division II Region II Bi-District round of the playoffs. Unlike last season though, despite claiming a share of the district championship in 2016, when Longview had to travel to Beaumont to take on the Bruins..the Lobos will welcome West Brook to Lobo Stadum. Last season, the Lobos saw a 10-point 4th quarter lead escape them in the later part of the quarter following a fumble inside the 10 yard line that would've sealed the deal for the Lobo gave the Bruins new life. West Brook walked away with the 34-33 victory. The loss for Longview marked the first time in 11 seasons that the Lobos failed to reach the 2nd round of the playoffs. Both John King's losses in bi-district play have come at the hands of a missed field goal as the clock ran out, and each came by a single point. Longview's last three seasons have ended at the hands of missed field goals. In 2014, Longview missed a long field goal in the ran as time ran out to fall to Mansfield Lake Ridge, 37-35. In 2015, Longview missed a chip shot field goal in the final seconds that would've sent the Lobos into overtime as they fell again to the Eagles, 56-53. And then last season's 34-33 loss to West Brook. The Lobos travel home where they are holding onto a 7-game home winning streak. Longview is 180-37-6 all-time at new Lobo Stadium, which opened in 1976. That record also includes a 62-5 mark under John King with one forfeit included. Longview will be hosting it's 3rd playoff game at Lobo Stadium where in 1984 the Lobos fell to Bryan and had to wait until 2009 to host another when Longview demolished Whitehouse 52-9. In 1922, Marshall struggled but put the Loboes away at Fair Park in a 14-6 victory. In 1925, Longview and Gilmer battled to a 7-7 tie at McClellan Field. In 1927, Leonard Ray tallied a school record 6-touchdowns, and Randall Ross added four of his own as the Loboes knocked off Jefferson in the largest margin of victory in Lobo history by a 84-0 count. In 1944, Longview saw it’s playoff hopes come to a halt as Marshall knocked off the Lobos 14-0 at Maverick Stadium in the 11-2A district title decider. In 1961, Longview close out it’s season at Panther Stadium in Lufkin with a 14-0 victory over the Panthers. In 1967, trailing 12-0 in the first quarter and 20-14 at half-time, Steve Judy came to the rescue in notching touchdowns 3 and 4 on the night in the 3rd as Longview clinched a playoff spot for the first time in 20-years with a 35-20 in Lufkin. In 1972, Chuck Boyd tallied twice in the second half as Longview completed the perfect 10-0 regular season in a 21-6 win at Lobo Stadium over Lufkin. In 1978, Longview and Pine Tree met for the first time on the gridiron. The Lobos trailed 12-10 going into the 4th quarter before reeling off 16 unanswered in a 26-12 win over the Pirates. In 2012, trailing 6-0 right before half, Chris Pellum brought down a touchdown pass on the final play to give Longview all the momentum that would lead into the 2nd half of a 27-6 Longview win over Rowlett.

LAST FIVE GAMES IN SERIES First Meeting FULL GAME LOG GAME PREVIEW & SERIES REVIEW With the closing of the 107th regular season of football at Longview High, the Lobos turn to their 42nd appearance on the UIL State Playoffs as they travel to Beaumont to take on the West Brook Bruins. The trip to Beaumont, despite being co-champions of District 11-6A, will be Longview’s longest ever trip for a first round playoff game. Previously, the longest was two trips to Waco (1983 at Floyd Casey Stadium against Killeen Ellison and 2003 at Waco ISD Stadium against South Garland). The trip to Beaumont also marks the longest road trip for the Lobos (a little over 200 miles) since Longview traveled to Midland in 2000 to take on Cedric Benson and the two-time defending State Champion Midland Lee Rebels. The Lobos will enter the playoffs for the 13th consecutive season, all under head coach John King. The last time Longview missed the post season came in that 2000 season, when the Lobos finished 3-7 overall. Last season, Longview reached the State Quarterfinals for the first time since their Semi-Final appearance in 2010. The Lobos fell 56-53 to eventual State Finalist Mansfield Lake Ridge as the Lobos missed a game-tying field goal in the final 15 seconds of the contest. Despite it being the first time the Lobos reached round 4 in five seasons, Longview continued improved their streak of bi-district victories to 10. John King is 11-1 all-time in Bi-District games as head coach of Longview. The Lobos have also advanced to at least the third round of the UIL playoffs in 9 of the 12 seasons under coach King (failing to do so in 2005, 2006 & 2014). Standing in their way of an 11th straight bi-district victory is an extremely unfamiliar opponent in the West Brook Bruins of Beaumont. The Lobos have faced just one other opponent from Beaumont ISD in their history, the Beaumont Royal Purples. The Lobos and Purples met all the way back in 1940 and in 1942, with Longview’s lone trip to Beaumont being in the 1942 season. Longview won both games against the Royal Purples (7-0 and 20-7). Beaumont West Brook comes into the contest under 5th year head coach Kevin Flanigan, who’s currently experiencing his best season as head coach of the Bruins. Entering the 2016 season, Flanigan’s record stood at 21-21 overall, with four straight seasons of no more than 6 and no less than 4 losses. The last time West Brook themselves finished an entire season with 9 wins came in 2009, when the Bruins advanced to the 5A Division I Regional round. West Brook will be looking to win a 10th game of the season for the first time since 2007, when they finished 10-2. The Bruins will be looking to win their first playoff game since a bi-district victory over Pasadena Dobie in 2010. West Brook has lost four consecutive playoff games since the win. Only one of the four losses has been within 20 points. The winner will move onto the Area Round to take on Lake Highlands or Lakeview Centennial in the Area Round.
