  1. This week, the Greenville Lions (2-5, 1-3 district) take part in yet another Homecoming. This time, however, it's actually their own, as they play host to the Hallsville Bobcats (4-3, 2-2 district.) While technically still alive in the playoff race, the Lions seem to have started preparing for the future, having promoted sophomore quarterback Weston Jarvis to starter, and giving reps to sophomore RB CaDamian Hale, younger brother of star senior RB Carandal Hale. Hale (the senior) currently has 159 carries for 1,520 yards, as the race for a 2,000 yard rushing season is in full force. ------------------------------- "Hallsville..." ...Colmesneil :)
  2. Well...SOMEONE'S gotta win. :) Sulphur Springs (0-5, 0-2 district) vs Greenville (1-4, 0-2) in a bitter rivalry. Sulphur Springs has dominated this matchup for the last decade, but their sudden decline gives the Lions an opening to score a victory in this series. The winner starts to get back into the District 15-5A race. Greenville, as always, is led by RB Carandal Hale. Hale comes into the contest with 1,089 rushing yards on 102 carries along with 10 TDs. He gained 126 yards on the ground against Longview last week. Defensively, the lopsided score of the Longview game hides an actually improved defensive effort from the Lions. They actually surrendered fewer points to the Lobos (51) than they did against Royse City (60.) Much improved tackling in last night's game forced the Lobos to actually face third (and fourth) downs on several occasions. I really don't know what Sulphur Springs has in store this week, so I'll let someone else handle things from the Wildcats' perspective.

LONGVIEW LOBOS (2-1, 0-0) VS PINE TREE PIRATES (1-2, 0-0) DATE: Friday, September 25th, 2015 TIME: 7:30 PM LOCATION: Lobo Stadium in Longview, Texas LONGVIEW BROADCAST: Sunny 106.5 FM KOOI PINE TREE BROADCAST: PirateSportsLive.com LOBOS LEAD SERIES 11-2-0 The two schools have never played a non-district contest. The Lobos have a 11-2-0 lead when the game is a district contest. The two schools have never played a playoff contest. The Lobos have a 2-0 lead when the game is played at a neutral location. The Lobos have a 3-2 lead when the game is played at Longview. The Lobos have a 5-0 lead when the game is played at Pine Tree. Longview has won the last four meetings against the Panthers. LAST FIVE GAMES IN SERIES 09.26.2014 - Longview 66, Pine Tree 13 - Pirate Stadium 10.29.2009 - Longview 56, Pine Tree 7 - Rose Stadium 10.30.2008 - Longview 41, Pine Tree 14 - Rose Stadium 11.06.1987 - Longview 34, Pine Tree 12 - Pirate Stadium 11.07.1986 - Pine Tree 10, Longview 9 - Lobo Stadium FULL GAME LOG GAME PREVIEW & SERIES REVIEW The Battle of Longview resumes in the 14th edition of Longview and Pine Tree on Homecoming and Green Out night for the Lobos. Following a tough 22-15 set back to Shreveport Byrd, the Lobos return home for the first time in a month. Longview’s loss was it’s first inside Independence Stadium since a 19-15 loss to #1 West Monroe. Awaiting them is their cross town rival Pine Tree, who has already equaled their entire win total from last season. The Pirates opened the season with a 37-9 victory over Jacksonville, their first over the Tribe since 2007. The Lobos and Pirates will meet for just the fourth time since 1987, and at Lobo Stadium for the first time since 1986. Pine Tree’s last visit to Lobo Stadium was a disaster for Longview, one that some claimed as the biggest upset in the history of PT Football. Tim Greaves 25-yard field goal in the 3rd quarter gave the Pirates the 10-7 lead and they held on for the 10-9 victory. Pine Tree’s only other victory over Longview (in 1982, 22-20) also came inside Lobo Stadium. Longview hasn’t defeated Pine Tree at home since 1984. The Lobos will definitely have many distractions during the pre-game, with both Homecoming and Green Out taking place. However, those distractions haven’t paid off for the opponents in years past under John King. The Lobos are a perfect 11-0 on homecoming night under John King, with the last the game was decided by a single score coming in 2010 against Mesquite Horn. Last season’s 56-7 victory over Greenville tied the second largest margin of victory for a Homecoming game in Longview history (only behind the 1991 Homecoming victory over Nacogdoches, 59-6). The last time Longview lost Homecoming came in 2003, 18-14, to #9 Tyler Lee. Pine Tree also enters Lobo Stadium for Green Out 2015. The Lobos are 11-2 all-time in Green Out contests, however Longview has lost 2 of the last 4 (2014 vs John Tyler, 41-25, and 2011 vs Allen, 42-23). The Lobos will be looking to win their 5th in a row over the Pirates, which would be the longest such margin of the series. To start the series, Longview won the first four which started in 1978 before the 1982 upset. The Lobos also will enter the contest with a long streak that has continued since King’s arrival as head coach. Longview has won 31 consecutive district home games dating back to 2003. Pine Tree’s lone victory last season came in a 31-29 victory over Mount Pleasant. The past three seasons Pine Tree is 1-16 in district play while the Lobos 16-game district winning streak overall with the last loss coming in 2012 to Mesquite Horn, 25-17. Under John King, the Lobos have just three district losses and a 60-3 district record overall. Since Longview’s first trip back to the East Texas district in 2008, Pine Tree is 3-41 overall in district contests. In 1936, hosting Fort Worth Masonic Home, the Lobos and Mighty Mites battled to a 0-0 tied inside Lobo Stadium. The tie was the only falter of the regular season for Longview. In 1948, Gene Hardin’s 11 yard run in the 3rd quarter as the lone marker in Longview’s 6-0 win over the Paris Wildcats. The win was the lone win on the season for Longview. In 1953, Denison rolled to a 28-14 victory over Longview inside Lobo Stadium. The win extended one of the longest losing streak’s in Longview history to 9 games. In 1959, Kim Flint, Douglas Bruner and Willard Wright ran over the goal line in a 22-6 victory for Longview over Arlington Heights. The Lobos held the Yellowjackets to 150 total yards on the night that saw the Lobos fumble 8 times. Heights’ only score of the night came on a 13 yard interception return. In 1964, despite holding the Bulldogs to just 55 yards on the night, the Lobos needed a 3rd quarter touchdown from James Street to put a staple on a 21-14 victory over Carthage. Mike Crawford and Don Stout added the other markers for the Lobos. In 1970, behind a 301 yard rushing night and a defensive showing that limited the Bulldogs to 66 yards, Longview strolled over Kilgore 28-0. James Lomax, Matt Dove, Ronnie Davis and Larry Smith were the touchdown men that gave Longview it’s points. In 1987, the Lobos saw a 14 point disappear to the Bulldogs of Trimble Tech before a 20 point fourth quarter paved the way for a 40-14 victory. Ray Allison’s three touchdown night capped the Lobos’ 26 point second half. In 1992, Bryan held a 21-7 lead over Longview with just 8 minutes to play inside Viking Stadium before the fireworks began. Eric Andrews 81 yard screen pass from Chris Judy kickstarted Longview’s comeback before Chad Daniels hauled in a 47 yard pass to pull within one. Judy gave Longview the lead by finding Brent Goerner wide open for the two point conversion and Longview shocked Bryan with a 22 point 4th quarter in a 29-21 victory over the Vikings. In 1993, Darren Danielson’s 30 yard field goal with 10 seconds remaining in the contest sent the Lobos to a 17-14 victory over Bryan in Lobo Stadium. L’Vendric Fite’s 26 yard run and Wardell Glaspie’s 56 yard interception return were Longview’s other scores on the night that saw both teams struggle to do much of anything offensively. In 2009, Jojo Thurman of Texas High pulled Texarkana within 3 points of the Lobos inside Grim Stadium with just 7:28 remaining. However, the Lobo offense would never give the ball back to the Tigers going on an 82 yard drive to run out the clock. Da’Cedric Hunt tallied two touchdowns along with a 17 yard run by Aaron Johnson and a 52 yard run by Keylon Shaw in a 28-25 victory over Texas High.
  4. Rivalry week continues for District 15-5A as the undefeated Greenville Lions (just go with it, it's rare I get to say it) make the long, grueling trip 12 miles to the southwest to face their biggest (recent) rivals, the Royse City Bulldogs. Last week, Greenville's stout (for us) defense kept the North Garland offense at bay just long enough for the offense to finally get the bugs (turnovers and penalties) out of their offense, prevailing on two long TD runs in the Lions 21-14 win over the Raiders. RB Carandal Hale was credited with 17 carries for 313 yards and 3 TDs by the Dallas Morning News (94 yards and 2 TDs on his final two runs of the contest.) Royse City...not so much. Marshall took out it's aggravation over a long non-district road trip out on the Bulldogs, rolling to a 62-13 stomping. Despite the results of the two games, Royse City remains a slight favorite in this contest, as their rivalry this decade has heavily favored the Bulldogs. Useless trivia: Greenville has not won a game by more than 10 points since October 23, 2009, against Dallas R.L. Turner. Greenville (15-5A): 1-0, 0-0 DIV, 1st place (by alphabetical order) Royse City (12-5A): 0-1, 0-0 DIV, 8th place (by 49-point loss)
  5. Because the rest of the district has their own threads...may as well not get left out. Greenville had a 40-game losing streak heading into 2014. North Garland turned out to be their slumpbuster. Now NG heads to Greenville to try to return the favor, and break a long (27 game) losing streak of their own. North Garland 2014 (District 11-6A): 0-10 (0--7 district) Greenville 2014 (District 15-5A): 4-6 (2-5 district) Useless Trivia: North Garland has two games against Coach Sedberrys this season: against Greenville Coach Marvin Sedberry this Friday, and against his son Marvin Sedberry Jr. and Naaman Forrest on Sept. 25.
  6. OK, Greenville's first year in the deep Piney Woods region in seemingly forever, and definitely my first year (the I-20 section, not I-30) is over; here's a bit of what I learned (if you don't care, just click the back button): 1) The speed limit on I-20 is infinity. I need to strap some nitro to my car just to keep up with the flow of traffic for the Marshall game next year. (1A) I'll take the speed demons of ET over the gridlock of the Metromess any day. 2) After three tries, I just can't pass through the town of Big Sandy without thinking of a crude joke about the ex. No offense. To the town, I mean. 3) Pine Tree's fight song, Grand Old Flag, is awesome. Most of our crowd was singing along when they came out at halftime. 4) Hallsville's stadium reminds me a LOT of our old stadium, Phillips field. A little nicer, larger, and a lot more purple, but still, nostalgic. (That's a good thing, for me.) 5) Longview. Lol. They looked like they could beat some D-3 college teams the way they handled us. 6) It helps to have a car that can get to Jackson, MS from here on one tank of gas. $17 in gas to get to Longview/Hallsville and back is nothing to sneeze at, especially if you have to do it three times in five weeks. It's an ugly 24-year old commuter car, though, so it breaks even. Wonder if it'll even hold nitro. 7) You guys probably see it a lot, but it was a first for me. Highway 80 from Mineola to Hawkins is a heck of a view, especially at sunset. 8) If I want stats, I just look for LoboFan07. He'll have the stats up that I want before I even know I want them. :) 9) Thanks for the hospitality. Each road game, the home crowd was pretty friendly. An entire season without a "Greenville ####" chant is a welcome change. :) Same for this website. Thanks for putting up with me and my lack of knowledge of East Texas south of I-30. 10) Probably most importantly...winning > not winning. We had a good team by our standards this year, and hopefully we'll give some folks more of a challenge in 2015. If I think of more, I'll post it later. Hope you got at least a chuckle.
  7. This is, obviously, the Game of the Year in District 15-5A. These two juggernauts meet for the first time in many years (maybe ever?)...with plenty of bragging rights on the line. For Greenville...they went into last offseason saddled with a 40-game losing streak. They'd love nothing better than to go into this offseason having reset the losing streak to Zero. (Obviously, Pine Tree wants the same thing for themselves.) The Lions only have three victories coming in to their season finale, but this has already been the most successful season of the decade for them. They have even managed to steal a district win to go along with two nondistrict victories. The Lions are trying for their first victory of the season over a team who comes into the contest with at least one win already. For Pine Tree...honestly, I'm not too familiar with the Pirates or their recent history. They are currently 1-8 and also claim a district victory. It may not mean much to the rest of the district, but sixth place looks a whole lot better than seventh to Pine Tree (and Greenville.) This clash of District 15-5A Superheavyweights is sure to be an instant classic.
  8. Greenville vs Sulphur Springs Greenville is coming off an embarrassing loss at Longview where they seemingly didn't even get off the bus. Sulphur Springs is coming off a victory over Mount Pleasant. Last time these teams got together, Sulphur Springs started taking knees...with SIX minutes left in the game. It was not well received in Lion Land. This is always a heated rivalry that has been heavily slanted towards the Wildcats as of late. (Sorry 'bout the SS logo...couldn't find a large one, so had to blow this one up to size, hence the jaggedness.)
  9. This game kicks off District 15-5A play this year. Greenville has ended a few losing streaks in nondistrict play (first overall win, first road win, first home win, first nondistrict win, all since 2009) but beginning this week, the games now count towards making the playoffs and the degree of difficulty rises exponentially. Greenville has not defeated the Tigers in the last decade, losing their last four contests, the most recent occurring in 2011, falling 21-14. Greenville's main motivation this season has been simply to snap the insanely long losing streak they had coming into this season, and to begin to turn around a losing culture in the Hunt County seat. They have accomplished the first already, and have begun the process on the second. They're basically playing with house money in district play this year. I'm afraid I don't know much about the 2014 Mount Pleasant Tigers, I'll let someone from there fill us in. Mount Pleasant: 0-3 (0-0 district), 7th (tie) in District 15-5A Greenville: 2-1 (0-0 district), 1st (tie) in District 15-5A
