LAST FIVE GAMES IN SERIES: 09.22.2023 - Longview 52, Lancaster 35 - Beverely Humphrey Stadium 09.23.2022 - Longview 21, Lancaster 13 - Lobo Stadium 11.19.2021 - Longview 34, Lancaster 14 - Mesquite Memorial Stadium 12.18.2020 - Longview 56, Lancaster 22 - Mesquite Memorial Stadium 11.21.2008 - Longview 49, Lancaster 22 - John E. Kincaide Stadium FULL GAME LOG GAME PREVIEW & SERIES REVIEW: Two years ago, Longview and Lancaster were realigned into the same district fresh off back to back Area Round playoff meetings that saw the Lobos pull away from the Tigers. Going into the 2022 season, the full expectation across the state was a rematch in the post season. That was denied after Frisco Reedy upset Lancaster in the second round. Going into this season, the full expectation was Lancaster/Longview rematch as the Tigers came into the season ranked fourth in the state but favorites to win the district crown over the number two ranked Lobos. The expectation was crushed early as Longview rolled over the Tigers in the first meeting at Lancaster, sending the Tigers to a 1-4 season start. The Tigers had different plans from their poor early start however, as the Tigers rolled into their unexpected rematch with the Lobos having now won five in a row, including knocking off district champion La Porte in South Texas before getting past Frisco Wakeland by 16 points in the Area Round. The Tigers advanced to the third round for the first time since getting to the Quarterfinals in 2019. Longview won it’s 11th game in a row on Friday night, this time with Frisco Reedy being the victim, as the Lobos jumped out to 45 consecutive points in route to a 52-14 win over the Lions. Longview has now defeated its two playoff opponents by a combined scored of 111-21. The win was Longview’s four consecutive area round win and their 80th all-time playoff victory. John King won his 51st playoff game as head coach of the Lobos, more than double of all other combined coaches prior to him. The 50+ points in consecutive playoff games marked the second time in program history that the Lobos have done that, the only other time coming in 2018 when the Lobos opened their run to the state title game with three consecutive 50+ point outings. The big question for the Lobos will be can Taylor Tatum play moving forward? Tatum hit the 4,000 rushing yard mark as a Lobo with his first half against Frisco Reedy that saw the senior hit 137 yards rushing with two touchdowns. John King confirmed that X-rays were held in the second half of the game while the Lobos ran away from the Lions. For the Lobos, in program history, this will be the seventh time that Longview has had a rematch from the regular season in the post season. Four times Longview has had a rematch with Lufkin in the post season from the regular season, while also meeting Mesquite Horn and Denton Ryan in similar fashion. The only time that Longview met a team in the regular season and didn’t have the same exact result play out in the post season came in 2014 against Lufkin, when the Lobos erased a 28-point deficit to defeat the Panthers, 43-42, after getting blown out to start the season, 44-14. This will be the sixth meeting between the Lobos and Tigers, with Longview having won all of them dating back to 2008. The closest meeting between the two teams was last season district game, where Longview came from behind to defeat Lancaster 21-13. This will be the fourth all-time playoff meeting between the two programs, the closest contest being a 20-point Longview win in 2021, that saw the Lobos explode for 24 unanswered points late in the third and fourth quarters in a 34-14 victory. Longview will be looking to advance to the State Quarterfinals for the second consecutive year, and the 17th time in program history. Kincaide Stadium FULL GAME LOG GAME PREVIEW & SERIES REVIEW: It's the rivalry that has dominated Lancaster's schedule for the previous four season. First, in 2020, the Lobos knocked off the #2 ranked Tigers 56-22 at Mesquite Memorial before watching Longview do the same less than a year later in a 34-14 defeat once again in the Area Round of the post season. Then came realignment, which saw Longview and Lancaster enter into the same district for the first time. Last year, the Tigers at halftime looked poised to knock off the Lobos at their own home. However, Longview pitched a second half shut out to knock off the Tigers once again, 21-13. It was the fourth straight win for the Lobos to open the series against one another. Now, Longview heads to Lancaster for the first time inside the confides of Beverly Humphrey Tiger Stadium. The two teams have taken completely different paths thus far in 2023. Longview opened the season with a close defeat to 6A state ranked McKinney High, 23-21, which saw the Lobos fall in the final seconds on a late field goal. Since then, the Lobos have rolled over their competition, outscoring them 112-14 with one game called at halftime. Lancaster has taken the opposite. Struggling in their season opener behind five turnovers, the Tigers knocked off Dallas Skyline 28-14 before getting blasted by two time defending state champion South Oak Cliff by 21. Despite a close loss to Denton Guyer at home, the Tigers saw their district opener again fall by the waist side in a shocking 28-21 loss to the McKinney North Bulldogs. For the Lobos, a 42-0 win over rivalry Lufkin has Longview riding high. Despite having their game cut in half against Tyler Legacy, the Lobos showed no fatigued outside of the first drive of the contest. After that, Longview used a stiffling defense and massive special teams play to give their offense great field position to dominate the Panthers all night long. The Tigers saw North jump out to a 21-0 lead, and while they climbed back into the contest, losing star back Kewan Lacy at the start of the fourth quarter really dimmed any hope of completing the comeback. Tiger Stadium will be the 122nd stadium Longview will have played in in their long, storied history. Kincaide Stadium FULL GAME LOG GAME PREVIEW & SERIES REVIEW: A brewing rivalry takes place at Longview's Lobo Stadium in week five of the Texas High School Football season. The Longview Lobos and Lancaster Tigers face off in the likely 7-5A Division 1 district championship showdown tonight after meeting the last two seasons in post season action. To recap the season thus far, both teams have experienced a ton of success. The Lobos, ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 5A Division 1, roll back home for the first time in three weeks fresh off two dominating victories. Longview, two weeks ago, defeated Tyler Legacy at Rose Stadium, 69-0, the most points the Lobos have ever scored in Tyler, only to one up by steamrolling long time rival Lufkin, 56-7, at Abe Martin Stadium. The largest victory for a Longview team ever over their rivals to the south inside the city of Lufkin. With the district opening win last week, the Lobos improved to 4-0. Lancaster, on the other hand, improved to 3-1 by dismantling McKinney North 74-7. The Tigers have a dominating win over defending 5A Division II state champion, South Oak Cliff, to their resume. The only loss on the season was to Denton Guyer. The two teams will meet for the fourth time in their history, but the first ever in regular season with both being put into the same district for the first time. Longview ran past the Tigers in the 2008 first meeting, on their way to a State Finalist berth. In 2020, Lancaster came into Mesquite's Memorial Stadium riding high with the state's No. 2 ranking. The Lobos quickly revered all fortune for the Tigers that season, dominating Lancaster 56-20. Last season, the two teams battled to their closest battle yet. The Lobos lead 17-14 heading into the fourth quarter before Longview tallied 17 unanswered in the fourth for a 34-14 victory. Longview returns to Lobo Stadium for their district home opener, looking to keep a streak alive under John King. King is a perfect 18-0 in district home openers as head coach of the Lobos. Longview is also 50-2 all-time under John King in district home games. In district games themselves, John King sits at 99-9. After having won 14 district titles in his first 16 seasons, the last two seasons have seen the Lobos fail to win a district crown. That's the longest since a 7-season stretch from 1997 to 2003. Lancaster head coach Leon Paul, in his second season as head coach of the Tiges, has never lost a district ball game as head coach of the Tigers. Lancaster's last district loss came back in 2019 against Highland Park, a 42-35 overtime loss. Kincaide Stadium FULL GAME LOG GAME PREVIEW & SERIES REVIEW: Kaden Meredith, Markevion Haynes and Jalen Hale. The three headed monster has led the way for the Lobos all season long, and Friday night's match up with arch rival Lufkin was no different. Behind an impressive defense, the three Lobos rolled all over the Lufkin Panthers to the tune of 41-5. The 36 point victory was the largest margin of victory for Longview since 1976. The win gave Longview their first 5-game winning streak over Lufkin since 1989-1993. Lufkin continues to be winless in Lobo Stadium, dating back to the 2003 season. With three touchdowns on Friday night, Kaden Meredith set the new school record for touchdowns in a career, currently standing at 58. Meredith's three rushing scores also passed Fred Talley's school record for rushing scores in a career. Meredith now has 55 rushing tallies since 2018. Now the real gauntlet begins for the Lobos. Longview heads to Mesquite to take on the Lancaster Tigers, the third ranked team in the state at the end of the regular season. The Tigers have been rolling all season long. Lancaster, 10-0 for the first time in school history, has scored 587 points in 9 actual games played. Lancaster had one win by forfeit. More impressively, the Tigers have given up just 50 points all season long. Lancaster has topped 80 points in four games and recorded a shut out in three. For Longview, coming into this year's Area round game, the Lobos are looking to avenge last season's upset loss to Dallas Jesuit in the same round. The Rangers ended Longview's 27-game winning streak in that loss, 27-25. On Lancaster's side of things, the Tigers are looking to justify their status among the elite teams in Class 5A Division I. Last year, the Tigers were able to make it to the state quarterfinals before falling to Frisco Lone Star, 38-20. Longview and Lancaster have met once previously, also in the Area round. Back in 2008, the Lobos rushed for 372 yards which led the way to a 49-22 victory at Kincaide Stadium. One of the biggest things to note from that meeting was Longview setting a school record with a 99-yard interception return for a score in the fourth quarter of the game. Alonte Darden had that pick six. Of course, for Longview, that game was apart of a run that ended with the Lobos returning to the State Championship game for the first time in 11 years. Longview will be returning to Mesquite Memorial Stadium for the first time since 2016, when the Lobos knocked off North Mesquite, 49-35. The Lobos are 8-3 all-time at Mesquite Memorial Stadium, but the Lobos hold a 1-2 record in post season games at the stadium. The last time Longview visited Mesquite Memorial Stadium in the post season it turned out to be one of the darkest days in Lobo playoff history. Longview, in 2005, was ranked 3rd in the Class 5A AP poll to end the regular season and headed to Mesquite to take on 6-4 South Garland in the bi-district round. The game turned out to be a huge defensive battle until South Garland took a 14-13 lead with half a quarter to play. Longview would drive down deep inside Colonel territory, only to miss a 21-yard field goal with under 30 seconds to play and South Garland would hold on for their massive upset. Longview has lost in the Bi-District round just once since that day, going 14-1 in bi-district games with the only loss being on another missed field goal at Beaumont West Brook in 2016. It will be a slobber knocker of a game with both teams looking to advance to the Regional Semi-Finals.
