Head coach John King won’t want many people thinking that’s what is on the mind of his Lobos and the fans of his number one ranked team, but it will be hard to think of anything else. Revenge will be the headline as the Lobos welcome in McKinney North’s Bulldogs in the third meeting between the two programs. Last season, Longview visited McKinney ISD Stadium on a cold, windy Thursday night only to suffer a 37-35 defeat that saw the Lobos turn the ball over five different times on top of recording 13 penalties for over 120 yards. It was a nightmare for the Lobos in every which way, one that saw McKinney North’s Elijah Alexander completely steal the show offensively for the Bulldogs as he tallied up four touchdowns on the night. The second loss in district play last season marked just the second time under head coach John King that Longview had suffered two district losses within the same season. The two teams enter Longview’s Lobo Stadium in a cross road. For Longview, the Lobos are looking to clinch a playoff berth AND at least a top two seed within the district meaning a home playoff game regardless of what happens the rest of the day. The Lobos are the district’s lone remaining unbeaten team within the district. McKinney North, however, comes in at 3-1 in district play. For the Bulldogs, they will be coming in thinking a win would get them back into the district title race. McKinney North’s lone loss came to Lancaster, while Lancaster lost to Longview previously. A loss for the Bulldogs see the Lobos and Tigers pulling away while the Bulldogs would drop into battling for the third and fourth spots in district play. Last week, the Lobos sat their star backs in Taylor Tatum and Alijah Johnson but got a massive effort out of sophomore sensation Kelvin Washington, who registered four touchdowns on the night, in a 42-19 victory over the North Mesquite Stallions. The win was Longview’s eighth in a row over North Mesquite. The Lobos saw their mark of surrendering just eight points in the second half come to an end as a fumble late in the fourth quarter ended the shutout streak that had lasted since the third quarter of the second game of the season. The defense did not allow North Mesquite to pass midfield the entire half, once again. McKinney North got a highly emotional victory over Lufkin in three overtimes that saw the Bulldogs overcome a 17 point deficit in the second half before the two teams traded scores back and forth until being forced to decide a likely playoff spot, at least for Lufkin, on trading two point conversion attempts. McKinney North returns to Lobo Stadium for the second time in three years, following their 2020 Black Friday visit. The Bulldogs actually grabbed the lead early in that first meeting between the two programs, before the Lobos rolled up 340 yards rushing in a 55-10 beatdown of McKinney North. Friday’s contest will only be the 6th meeting between Longview and a McKinney ISD school, but it will be the second of the season. Longview first met McKinney High back in 1937, knocking off the Lions 32-7. The Lobos met McKinney Boyd in a 2013 playoff contest that saw the Lobos walk away with a 27-10 victory before also opening the 2022 season with a 36-10 victory over Boyd. The Lobos, of course, have been in a district with North the last three years. Longview is scheduled to meet McKinney High to open the 2023 season, as well as visit the Bulldogs in October 2023. Longview returns to Lobo Stadium for their 250th appearance inside the stadium they’ve called home since 1976. The Lobos are currently riding an 11-game winning streak at home, having won 205 of the previous 249 games they’ve played there. Highly documented, the Lobos have rarely lost at home under head coach John King, who just picked up his 204th victory as Lobo head coach. Longview sits at 86-6 under King at Lobo Stadium, but even more impressively, the Lobos are 56-2 in district ball games at home against King. The Lobos tallied up 495 total yards while holding the Tigers to 73 In 1932, Lufkin tallied 25 first downs while holding Longview to just one, as five different Panthers scored in a 34-0 Lufkin win over the Lobos at Panther Stadium. In 1938, despite outgaining the Tigers 146 to 49 on the day, Longview was unable to push over a score as the two teams battled to a 0-0 tie. Longview was able to get to the three yard line of Texas High in the second quarter, before losing the ball on downs. In 1949, Tommy Rae’s 21 yard rush in the first quarter lifted Longview to a 6-0 victory over Kilgore at Lobo Stadium. In 1960, Willard Wright tallied two touchdown to lift Longview to a 47-8 win over Tyler Lee at Lobo Stadium in the two programs’ first ever meeting. The Lobos held the Rebels, at the time, to 144 total yards on the day. In 1966, Keith Parker kicked three field goals in the only scorer of the game as Longview defeated Tyler Lee, 9-0, at Lobo Stadium. In 1977, Jim Tutt kicked two field goals while Greg Brown hauled in a 23-yard scoring reception in a 13-7 Lobo victory over Texas High at Grim Park. In 1978, trailing 14-3 at halftime, the Lobos stormed back in the second half with Rex Owns rushing in from three yards out in the third quarter before Mack Fa gett hauled in a 26-yard scoring reception with with 9 minutes left in the contest. James Redden intercepted Tyler Lee on the Lobo goal line with 1:30 to go to preserve the win over a Saturday night at Rose Stadium. In 1983, Marlin Myers hauled in two scoring receptions while Joe Johnson added a 52-yard rushing tally and Leon Hendrix scored from 47 yards out in a 28-12 win over Marshall at Lobo Stadium. In 1988, Odell Beckham tallied three times for Marshall, as the Mavericks broke a 19-year losing streak to the Lobos with a 28-0 victory at Maverick Stadium. Longview was held to just 106 yards on the day. In 2011, Seven different Lobos scored for the Lobos as Longview rolled over North Mesquite, 49-13, at Lobo Stadium. Longview tallied up 419 total yards, including 231 passing yards, but four fumbles plagued Longview throughout. In 2016, clinging to a 21-17 lead late in the 3rd quarter, John Tyler took off with 17 points that went unanswered until Jaylin Brown hauled in a 71-yard score late in the 4th as the Lions knocked off Longview 38-24, at Lobo Stadium. John Tyler managed 558 total yards not he day, holding Longview to 352.

The motto to the rest of the regular season will sing true, as the Lobos inch ever so closer to a district championship, a first since 2019's 11-6A district title. Last week, the Lobos returned to the gridiron from the bye week to blast 5A Division One new comer Forney, 46-7, in the first meeting between the two squads. The Lobos controlled the very get go, racing out to a 22-0 lead before Forney had a chance to know what hit them. The win improved Longview to 6-0 on the season, but most importantly 3-0 in district. With that, the Lobos see four teams remaining in front of them in their quest to return to the mark of district champions. This week, the North Mesquite Stallions are back on the schedule after a two year hiatus. The Stallions dropped down from Class 6A in last February's realignment. However, the Stallions have found just as little success in 5A D1 as they did in Class 6A. North Mesquite comes in off a 28-14 loss down at Lufkin, dropping to 1-2 in district play. North Mesquite's lone win in district play was over crosstown rival West Mesquite, who currently sits at 0-3 in district play. The two teams last met in 2019, when the Lobos won their 24th consecutive game in knocking off the Stallions 55-0. The win also marked Longview's 7th in a row over North Mesquite, dating back to 2010. Since the Lobos lost to North Mesquite back in 2010, Longview has outscored the Stallions 346-83 in those seven meetings. The last two meetings have been the largest margins of victory for Longview in the series, outscoring the Stallions 118-3 in those two meetings alone. Overall, Longview has 12 wins over the Stallions to just three losses. The two teams first met back in 1971, when the Stallions visited Longview and walked away with a 36-23 victory thanks to a 17-point outburst in the fourth quarter. In the next meeting, delayed until 1988, the Stallions knocked off the Lobos at Lobo Stadium again in a 28-14 victory. Those two wins are the only time a Mesquite ISD squad has ever had a series lead over the Lobos. Since then, the Lobos have rolled over the Stallions, all in district play, by a 12-1 series margin. North Mesquite's lone district win over the Lobos was definitely a big win, back in 2010. Longview took a 14-3 lead into the 4th quarter at Mesquite Memorial Stadium only for Joe Bergeron and the Stallions to overcome Longview and defeat the Lobos 24-14. The win snapped a 36-game district winning streak for the Lobos. The loss also remains the only loss since John King over that saw the Lobos give up a multiple score lead in the fourth quarter. The Stallions almost did the same four years prior in 2006, when Longview took a 27-14 lead into the fourth quarter at Mesquite Memorial only for North Mesquite to storm back and take a 28-27 lead on the Lobos late. Longview's D'Marcus Miles denied that comeback, however, as the Lobos escaped with a 35-28 win. The two teams are meeting at Mesquite Memorial Stadium for the 7th time, with Longview holding a 5-1 record against the Stallions at their home venue. Overall, this will be Longview's 17th trip to Mesquite Memorial Stadium, holding an 11-5 advantage in the previous 16 games. Of course, Longview fans know Mesquite Memorial quite well after recent years in seeing their season end at the hands of Denton Ryan in both 2020 and 2021 at Memorial. That said, outside of opponent not ranked No. 1 in the state and not named Denton Ryan, Longview has won their last 5 contests there. As Longview enters tonight's contest, they can not clinch a playoff berth this week though tiebreakers would be the only way to eliminate the Lobos in that case. Longvew can however, clinch a playoff berth and a top two seed with a win this week and next week. Longview held Troup to 9 total yards on the night. In 1938, Edgar Worsham rushed for three scores while Leo Sapp tallied two scores in a 39-20 Longview win over Athens at Lobo Stadium. Hardy Miller hauled in an 11-yard scoring reception as well. In 1949, Henderson’s O’Neal Brightwell rushed from 31-yards out to tally the only score of the game in a 7-0 Lion win over Longview at Lobo Stadium. In 1977, Sam Lanier, Kenny Jackson, Bobby Portley, Reno Hutchins and Melvin Lewis each scored a touchdown as Longview rolled over John Tyler, 35-0, at Lobo Stadium. The Lobos tallied 27 first downs and managed 461 total yards while holding the Lions to 168 yards on the night in the win. In 1983, Joe Johnson rushed for three Lobo touchdowns, including a 67-yarder in the 4th quarter, as Longview knocked off Lufkin, 36-13, at Abe Martin Stadium. In 2005, despite building a 27-13 lead, 22 Rockwall points in the 4th quarter saw the Lobos trailing 35-34 with 1:16 remaining. Zach Decker saved the day with six seconds remaining as his 23-yard field goal lifted Longview a 37-35 win over the Yellowjackets. In 2011, Eric Hawkins tallied twice, topped with Bivins Caraway, Tory White and Deontre Wilson tallying, to lift Longview to a 38-30 victory over Mesquite Horn at E.H. Handy Stadium. LAST FIVE GAMES IN SERIES: First Meeting. FULL GAME LOG GAME PREVIEW & SERIES REVIEW: The Longview Lobos knew they would be tested this season. It was just a matter by whom, and when. It came in the form of week five’s opponent, the Lancaster Tigers. Meeting for the third season in a row, but first in the regular season, the two teams have formed a healthy rivalry with the Lobos eliminating the Tigers in the playoffs the last two years. With a district title looming, the two schools didn’t disappoint in the battle. The Tigers controlled the first half, jumping out to a 13-7 lead and picking off Lobo senior quarterback twice, the first two interceptions Allen had thrown this season. In the second half, the Lobos showed why Lobo Stadium is such a hard place to come and win, with the Lobo defense shutting out Lancaster the rest of the way while Taylor Tatum added two touchdowns to lift Longview to a 21-13 victory. The win keeps Longview undefeated on the season at 5-0, but most importantly sitting 2-0 in district play. The win lifted John King to his 100th district victory as head coach of the Lobos in his 109th district contest. With a bye week behind us, the Forney Jackrabbits now stand in Longview’s way of fully claiming the district crown as the Jackrabbits sit as the only other district squad with an unblemished district record. Forney dominated West Mesquite in their district opener, 43-14, before dominating Lufkin, 41-21, at home. This is the second straight season for Forney to start district at 2-0, after having gone 1-13 in district contests in their previous two years. Forney’s 4-1 mark is its best start since starting 5-0 in 2015. Longview welcomes in Forney for the first time in its history to Lobo Stadium. After the win over Lancaster, the Lobos improved to 204-38-6 all-time at Lobo Stadium, dating back to it’s opening in 1976. The win over the Tigers was the 10th straight at home, and the 30th win out of the last 31 games there. Overall, the Lobos are 85-6 under John King at home. The Lobos also will be looking to clinch a winning record for the 22nd consecutive season, dating back to 2000. The true rivalry week according to many Longview and Lufkin supporters kickoffs off district play this season as the 85th edition of the Lobos and Panthers set to resume the district side of the rivalry for the first time since 2003 as the two kickoff at Lufkin's Abe Martin Stadium. Longview, ranked No. 1 in the state according to Dave Campbell's Texas Football, heads to Abe Martin fresh off their second largest victory under head coach John King as the Lobos rolled over Tyler Legacy, 69-0, last Friday night. The win improved the Lobos to 3-0 on the season, and helped John King record the 200th victory of his career. King's 200th victory moved him into the top 100 all-time in victories by a head coach. Nine different Lobos tallied touchdown for Longview on Friday night, the most in a single game in school history. In the win, Longview also recorded their 18th consecutive victory over the Red Raiders, the second longest winning streak over a single team in school history. Lufkin, who improved to 3-0 to start a season for the first time since 2010, pulled one of the state's biggest upsets last Friday as the Panthers defeated No. 3 ranked A&M Consolidated, 31-14. Because they also marked Longview’s 21st victory in 22 seasons over the Marshall Mavericks. But the first time since 2018, the Lobos and Mavericks will both enter the contest with undefeated records. Longview, the state’s #1 ranked team in 5A Division I according to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, avoid the mass upsets we saw across the state in the opening week by a dominating 36-10 victory over the McKinney Boyd Broncos. Longview was paced by their all-everything receiver Jalen Hale, who became the first ever Lobo to catch 30 touchdowns, and another edition to the running back lore of Longview High in Taylor Tatum, who rushed for three scores entering his junior season. Three year starter Jordan Allen had his best game as a Lobo starter, throwing for two touchdowns and 201 yards in the win over Boyd. Jalen Hale’s 2nd quarter touchdown that gave him 30th career score, marked just the 12th time a Lobo had registered 30 or more touchdowns in a career. Hale is now tied for 11th all-time in Lobo history in touchdowns scored. Allen himself is moving up the history books, his two tosses for scores pushed him into a tie for 4th all-time in passing touchdowns in Lobo history. The win for Longview was the largest season opening victory, 26 points, since their 2011 victory over Marshall which finished 30-0. For Marshall, an unexpected win has hopes high as can be as they head to Lobo Stadium for the 2nd consecutive season. The Mavericks dominated old time rival Tyler High, with a 40-29 scoreline a bit deceiving. Marshall controlled the contest the entire way, rushing for over 300 yards aided by 153 from J.Q. Davis and 121 from Byrd Robinson. The 1-0 start is just third win to open a season for Marshall since 2016. Marshall enters Lobo Stadium looking to end quite a few running streaks. First, the Mavericks have not started 2-0 since 2015. A 2-0 start mark just the fifth 2-0 start for Marshall since 1997. The Mavericks also enter looking to end a series that has become completely dominated by the Lobos. Marshall has not defeated the Lobos since the 2015 season, marking a 6-game losing streak to their rival from the east. Longview, overall, has won 20 of the last 21 meetings between the two programs, with that 28-25 loss in 2015 marking the lone exception. The longest streak for the Mavericks will come in the way of the stadium they’re entering. Marshall’s last win in Lobo Stadium came back in 1998, when the Mavericks upset another #1 ranked Lobo squad at the time, 35-28 in double overtime. Since that overtime loss, the Lobos have won the last 10 meetings by an average score of 40-12, having been shutout the last 11 quarters overall. Early on in the series, the Mavericks dominated the series, winning 18 of the first 22 match ups leading up to 1931. In 1983, Charles Smith hauled in a 46 yard reception before Joe Johnson rushed in from 10 yards out but it wasn’t enough for Longview to catch Fort Worth Eastern Hills in a 26-15 loss to the Highlanders. For the 113th time, the Longview Lobos take to the field to open a season. And for the 19th time, John King leads those Longview Lobos as head coach of the program. It’s been an off season of optimism for the Lobos, and one King has acknowledged has the potential to be an extremely special one. Following a dominating Seven on Seven performance in Tyler and then in College Station at the state tournament, Jordan Allen returns as quarterback for the Lobos for his third and final season. It’s one that Allen looks to redeem himself after struggling in his sophomore season of 2020, followed by losing the starting position in 2021. Each season saw the Lobos end their season in the Regional round against Denton Ryan. It looks to be be a redeeming season as well for the rest of the program, as the Lobos have seen consecutive seasons for the first time in the John King era that Longview did not reach 10 or more wins (9 both seasons), as well as the first time of not winning the district championship in consecutive seasons during King’s tenure. Returning along side Allen is a host of other Lobos that had significant impact on the 2021 season, no bigger than Jalen Hale. Already the holder for receiving touchdowns in a career as a Lobo, Hale will have his eyes set on a breaking the receiving yards in a career mark as he sits just under 800 yards away from Kamden Perry’s mark. Sophomore sensation Taylor Tatum returns for his junior season as does Longview’s group of sophomore secondary men. For just the second time in their history, the Lobos head to McKinney, Texas to take on an opponent as Longview opens the 2022 campaign against the McKinney Boyd Broncos. Longview’s first visit to McKinney occurred just a season ago, in a 37-35 shocking upset against McKinney North. The loss marked the first time a John King coached Lobo squad had lost to a team sitting at under .500 entering the contest. A 5 turnover day, including three interceptions by Jordan Allen, sealed the fate for the Lobos on the day. Longview and McKinney Boyd meet for the second time in their respective histories after last meeting in 2013’s 5A Division II Area Round. The Lobos overcame a slow start, seeing themselves trailing 10-7 at halftime from Richardson’s Wildcat-Ram Stadium, to roll away in the second half of a 27-10 victory over the Broncos. Longview’s trip to the McKinney will be the first of three over the course of the next 12 months. The Lobos will return next season to take on McKinney High in the same classic, most likely a Saturday evening affair, before a late October district trip against McKinney North. Friday’s meeting will be just the fifth all-time for the Lobos against a McKinney ISD school. Prior to Longview’s 2013 win over McKinney Boyd, the Lobos knocked off McKinney High back in 1937, 32-7. As well as two district meetings against McKinney North that has seen the Lobos and Bulldogs split their meetings. As the new season gets underway, the Lobos see a quite a bit of change in their district for the next two seasons. After losing Wylie East and Highland Park to Class 6A, and Sherman to another district inside Region II, the Lobos will see North Mesquite and Lufkin return to their district schedules as well as facing off against Lancaster for the third consecutive season following back to back playoff victories over the Tigers. On top of those three teams being added to the slate, Longview will take on the Forney Jackrabbits for the first time in their history this season. Two of the state's winningest programs renew a budding rivalry as #4 Longview travels to #3 Highland Park for the second part of their two game series in district play. The two programs previously had not met since their 1986 5A Regional playoff match up when the Lobos ran for a playoff school record 496 yards on the Scots, in a 41-14 beatdown. Last season, the two teams met at Lobo Stadium that saw the Lobos fall at home for the first time in 21 contests with the Scots holding on for an 18-13 defensive battle victory. It was head coach John King's second district home loss since arriving to Longview High. The Scots will be facing an even more impressive streak, as Highland Park looks to hold onto a district home winning streak that dates back to 1998. Scots' head coach Randy Allen has yet to lose a single home district playoff game in his 24 seasons at the helm of the state's winningest program. In fact, Randy Allen has just two home losses in his entire career at home. The last home loss came in 2019, as the Lone Star Rangers defeated Highland Park 30-19. Last week, the Lobos saw their most impressive victory of the year as the result was never in doubt in a 56-0 win over Wylie East. It marked the 199th victory at this version of Lobo Stadium. Highland Park sought off an unexpected challenge at Sherman on Thursday fternoon, before pulling away in the fourth quarter to win 35-17. Both teams have had their struggles this season. Longview opened the 2021 season with a crushing 41-7 defeat to the defending 5A Division I state champions while Highland Park opened their season with a similar crushing defeat in a 45-21 loss to 6A Division II state finalist, Southlake Carroll. Since the opening losses, both teams have had up and downs but have managed to win every game on their schedule as the Lobos enter at 5-1 and the Scots enter at 4-1. The Lobos come into Highlander Stadium riding a 13-game road district winning streak, with the last road district loss coming in 2017 when Mesquite Horn knocked off the Lobos, 52-34. That contest marked just the second game in Lobo history that a DFW team had score 50 or more points on the Lobos. Longview and Highland Park have had a short but memorable series, with Friday's game being just the 9th meeting between the two schools. The Lobos and Scots met in 1924, the first playoff game in Longview football history. Highland Park walked away with that victory, 20-0, at Ownby Stadium. The first time Longview ever visited a version of Highlander Stadium came in 1938 where the defending 1A State Champions saw the Scots pull away in the 4th quarter to defeat the Lobos, 26-6. Longview got some version of revenge the next season in 1939, when Charles Sapp rushed in for the Lobo score in a 6-0 victory at old Lobo Stadium. After a 1962 victory for the Scots at Lobo, the two teams started a two game series in 1966 and 1967. In 1966, Steve Judy got the scoring started for the Lobos in the first quarter but the Scots proved to be too much racking up 23 first downs and 263 rushing yards in a 33-14 Scot victory in Longview's last visit to old Highlander Stadium. In 1967, the Lobos would prove to the state they were for real in a dominating 37-22 victory at Lobo Stadium over the Scots. The last two match ups came in the previously mentioned 1986 encounter and last season's meeting. This will be Longview's first ever visit to the new Highlander Stadium. No doubt it will be one for the ages as the Lobos and Scots meet in what should be for the district championship, one more time. That seems to be the theme of Longview's 2021 playoff run, as for the second straight week the Lobos will meet an opponent they played in the 2020 post season. This team, it's a rematch of not only a 2020 playoff opponent but also a 2021 regular season opponent. For the 3rd time in 11 month, Longview takes on #1 ranked Denton Ryan. The Lobos and Raiders never met before last year's Boxing Day match up, but since have gotten extremely familiar with each other. And for Longview, it hasn't been pretty. The Raiders have controlled both match ups with the Lobos, rolling to two convincing victories. Last season's playoff match up proved to be the closer of the two, as the Raiders took a 13-7 halftime lead before shutting down Longview's offense in the 2nd half and rolling to a four score victory. This season, Longview led 7-6 after the first quarter before a disastrous 2nd quarter completely derailed the Lobos in the season opener in a 40-7 loss. The 33-point loss to open the season is tied for the 3rd worst opening season loss in Longview history. The two teams took massively different paths to reach this point of the season. For Denton Ryan, it's the same as it's been the last couple of seasons, however an early season 14-7 loss to cross town rival Denton Guyer ended a long winning streak for the Raiders. Since though, it's been a 10-game winning streak again for the Raiders. Ryan really was only tested once all season, in a 7-6 win over Frisco Lone Star. The Rangers, in that game, had the ball inside the 15 as time was running out before the Raiders recovered a fumble to win the district championship. Last week, the Raiders pulled out a 28-20 victory over Magnolia West. The Raiders built up a 21-0, and 28-7 lead before the Bulldogs pulled themselves back into the game, but the Raiders were never in danger of losing the game. Longview's road has been much bumpier. Following the opening season loss, the Lobos struggled on offense all year before finding their groove in a quarterback change following the 3rd loss of the season. The 3 regular season losses is the most for Longview since 2012. Since the quarterback change, the Lobos have rolled to their solid victories, including last week's 34-14 win over #10 Lancaster. The two teams return to Mesquite Memorial Stadium, the location of last season's playoff match up. It will be Longview's 16th visit to the Mesquite Memorial, and 7th playoff meeting. The Lobos are 11-4 in the previous 15 games, and 3-3 in the previous 6 playoff games. That's what Longview and Lancaster assured would happen in the 2021 Class 5A Division II Region II Area round after their bi-district victories in round one. The Lobos, 7-3 and in 2nd place in district 7-5A Division I, won their 8th consecutive home game and their 6th consecutive bi-district game at Lobo Stadium with a 45-24 victory over Magnolia. In the first meeting between the two schools, it looked like it was going to be a complete route for the Lobos after Longview jumped out to a 28-7 lead early in the 2nd quarter. However, that all changed in a 4 minute span that saw the Bulldogs score 17 points heading into halftime. Despite Longview leading 28-24 at the break in a half that they dominated, the Lobos needed an 8 minute drive to start the 3rd quarter to really set the tone and walk away with a three score victory over the Bulldogs. Willie Nelson led the ways for Longview, as the sophomore recorded 3 interceptions on the night, one for a score on the second play of the game. Joshua Thomas and Jalen Hale led the way on offense with 5 touchdowns score between the two. Lancaster, district 6 winners for the second straight season, had a much tougher task after trailing 15-6 at halftime in their match up against the Frisco Reedy Lions. A dominating 3rd quarter that saw the Tigers score 21 points helped Lancaster to another bi-district victor, rolling 35-15 in the second half. The Tigers are riding a 10-game winning streak, following their season opening defeat to Port Arthur Memorial, 27-7. For Longview, no doubt they'll be feeling their ride to get to the 2nd round was a much tougher task than what Lancaster has faced. The Lobos faced off against #1 Denton Ryan to open the season, #3 Highland Park in district play and #1 Bryant out of Arkansas to finish non-district play. Out of all four non-district opponents for the Lobos, all four are still playing football at this point of the season, including Highland Park from district play. Every single team on Lancaster's schedule has had their season end outside of the Tigers themselves. For the Lobos, last week's Bi-District victory was the 16th win in the last 18 seasons under John King in round 1. The only years Longview has failed to make the 2nd round since John King took over has been 2005 and 2016. Both losses came by 1 point on missed field goals to end the contest. As stated earlier, this is a rematch from last season's Area round that saw the Lobos walk away with a 56-20 win over then #3 Lancaster. In that meeting, the Lobos jumped out to a 35-7 halftime lead as they held the Tigers to just 5 first downs on the night. The score itself doesn't show just how dominate the Lobos were overall. That's what the Longview Lobos gave their fan base following an upset loss to McKinney North the week prior to the regular season finale, in one of John King's worst losses as head coach. The Lobos, on senior night, rolled to a 49-0 victory over the Tyler Lions, to clinch the 2nd seed in district play and make their that Longview would host a playoff game for the 5th consecutive season. The 49-0 win over Tyler marked the largest margin of victory ever by a Lobo club over the Lions, topping last year's 44-point victory. It continued a streak of 9 consecutive seasons finishing 2nd or better in district play, and 17 out of the 18 seasons. John King's only season to not finish in the top two came in 2012, when the Lobos finished 3rd. Longview stilled finished as the top seed in 5A Division II season. Last week's win was spearheaded by the return of Joshua Thomas to the Lobo offense. Thomas, who has been injured off and on all season, has struggled to see playing time with Jordan Allen taking the reigns most games for the Lobos. The senior accounted for 3 touchdowns on Friday against the Lions to help seal the victory. Next up for Longview is a first time ever meeting with the Magnolia Bulldogs. Magnolia, 7-3, heads into the contest after blowing out New Caney, 52-21. Magnolia's only three losses this season came to Katy Tompkins (9-1), College Station (10-0) and Magnolia West (9-1). Magnolia does get to make the nearly 4 hour drive to Lobo Stadium, though it is not the longest drive the program will have faced in their history. Two years ago, the Bulldogs traveled to AT&T Stadium to take on Highland Park and were blown out 63-28. Much different team from then however, after the Bulldogs won district just a year ago before falling to Frisco Lone Star in round 2. Longview will return home after senior night looking to extend a home winning streak of 7 games. John King has lost just five home games in his 17 years as head coach of Longview, the last coming to Highland Park last season. The Lobos have won 5 consecutive home playoff games (2009, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020), with the only loss at Lobo Stadium (new) coming to Bryan back in 1984. Longview heads into bi-district play having won their last four bi-district contests, with the last loss coming at Beaumont West Brook in 2016. Prior to that, Longview had not lost a bi-district contest since 2005. John King sits at 15-2 all-time in bi-district playoff games. Both losses ended in one-point losses (14-13, 34-33). It will be Longview's 21st consecutive trip to the post season. Magnolia heads into bi-district play having won their last two bi-district contests, after having missed the post season in 2018. The Bulldogs last lost a bi-district game in 2017 when they fell to Cedar Park, 24-20. In 1948, Gahlen Dinkle rushed in from 14 yards out in the only score of a 6-0 Marshall victory over Longview at Lobo Stadium. The Lobos were held to 104 total yards on the night. In 1954, Longview’s Tony Rothrock rushed in from 10 yards out before Nacogdoches struck for a 54-yard and 40-yard score in the 2nd and 3rd quarters in a 14-7 victory for the Dragons at SFAU Memorial Stadium. In 1965, John Harrison got the scoring started before three other Lions would tally as John Tyler defeated Longview, 28-0, at Lobo Stadium. The Lions managed just 146 total yards in the win. Four Lobo turnovers were the difference. In 1971, Clifford Davis rushed for two scores while Alvin Davis rushed for another as Lufkin piled up 24 points in the 2nd quarter in a 30-14 victory over Longview at Panther Stadium. In 1976, 7 different Lobos tallied as Longview rushed for 324 yards and threw for another 103 yards in a 44-6 victory over Lufkin at Lobo Stadium. In 1983, Charles Smith hauled in an 80-yard bomb from Eric Harris with under a minute to go as Longview knocked off Killeen Ellison, 14-7, at Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco. In 1993, Chris Butcher and L’Vendric Fite Mach tallied twice as Longview ran away from Spring, 49-25, at Bowers Stadium in Huntsville. Longview threw just 4 passes on the night, while Spring threw 37 times. In 2005, Zack Decker kicked two field goals but the final one went wide in the final seconds of the game as South Garland upset nationally ranked Longview, 14-13. Phillip Payne’s 7 yard touchdown reception proved to be the different, as Decker went 2 for 4 on the day in field goals. In 2011, four different Lobos tallied as a windy Tiger Stadium in Corsicana as Longview knocked off Temple, 24-3. The Wildcats were held to just 153 total yards on the night as the Lobos were held to just a 7-3 halftime lead before breaking things out in the 3rd quarter.

Once again, we have seen this story with Highand Park and how it unfolds over the years under long time, legendary HC Randy Allen who brought home his 28th district title in his 40 years as a HC. Those wins aren’t disappearing in 2021. The 2020 district MVP Brayden Schager is headed to Hawaii, but surely by now, one has learned to never question whether Highland Park will have a QB or not. 2023 QB Brennan Storer (5’11 180) will be the next great Highland Park QB, with a heavy emphasis on the word great. Storer already holds numerous FBS offers and was an Adidas All-American as a freshman. He’s one of the top signal callers in the nation for the 2023 class. There will be plenty of targets with second team all-district SR WR John Rutledge (6’0 170) back. JR WR’s Jackson Heis (6’3 180) and Grayson Schrank (5’9 160) were also heavily involved in the pass catching for Highland Park in 2020. A great offensive line has been depleted with the only returning starter being first team all-district SR RG Grant Gibson (6’4 280). But again, don’t let it fool you. There is plenty of great youth moving up for Highland Park, such as 2023 LT Robert Sweeney (6’6 250), who already has offers from ACC and Big 10 programs. The defense was hit hard by graduation. But so were a lot of the other teams in the district. The good news is 3 year varsity vet Jack Curtis returns. Curtis (6’4 220) is a dominant defensive end with several FBS offers. The other returning starter is OLB George Wright (6’0 205) who was first team all-district and will definitely have a realistic shot at the district defensive MVP. The other 9 positions on defense will need to be replaced but Highland Park will reload. Also, talk about a tough stadium to go into and win, Highlander Stadium makes a strong case for being the toughest place to play in Texas. Since Randy Allen took over the Scots in 1999, Highland Park is 112-2 at home. With Longview coming to town, Highland Park naturally gets the edge because of that. The Scots will be the Scots in 2021. Highland Park SR OLB George Wright Longview Lobos Head Coach: John King 188-40 (94-7) 17 seasons at Longview 2020 result: 9-3 (4-1), 5A D1 Regional Returners: O = 6, D = 2 Returning All District: 7 A late game fumble and costly penalties vs Highland Park ultimately led to the Lobos coming 5 points short of their 15th district title in 17 seasons under John King. Longview started peaking in the weeks following before running into a buzz saw called Denton Ryan in the regional round. Many big names graduate for Longview, especially defensively. But as usual, the Lobos have ammo left in the chamber. RB Kaden Meredith, the programs’ all-time leading scorer, graduates with nearly two dozen offers in hand to choose from. However, the Lobo offense looks to be explosive in 2021. Longview returns the most all district players in the district with 7, and 3 of them reside on the offensive line. Longview will probably be home of the best offensive line in the district with SR LT DeQualin Vaughn (6’3 250), SR C Connor Cox (6’1 250), SR RG Jatavian Bush (6’1 290) and JR RT Jax Norman (6’1 230) all returning. JR LG Blair Williams (6’2 310) was one of 10 sophomores that was on varsity for Longview in 2020; has FBS potential. King called his WR group in 2020 “the best that he has had since being at Longview” and most of those guys return. It all starts with JR WR Jalen Hale (6’3 180) who already has nearly 20 major FBS offers and is considered the top WR in Texas for the 2023 class, 7th in the nation. JR JT Wright (6’4 190) was also a sophomore WR on varsity in 2020 giving Longview a dynamic and rangy group of wideouts in 2021. QB Jordan Allen (6’1 180) started for Longview as a sophomore but the QB position is still one to keep an eye on in the spring. The JV's lone loss on the season was a close one to Highland Park but Longview has a special 2024 group that went undefeated as freshmen in 2020, outscoring their opponents 339-43. There is high level talent all over that group, starting with RB Taylor Tatum (5’11 190) who may be taking over the RB duties for Longview in 2021 as a sophomore. Tatum is projected to be one of the top RB’s in Texas for the 2024 class. Defensively only two starters return. Still, the front 7 should once again be solid with SR LB Devean Isaac (5’11 210) returning from an all-district performance. The other returning starter is JR S TaDarion Boone who earned district defensive newcomer of the year as a sophomore. Players like SR DL Jesse Fairchild (6’2 260) and SR DL DK Stanford (6’2.5 240) saw significant playing time. JR JJ Rougley (6’3 215) was a varsity TE as a sophomore but could make OLB/DE his home. Longview will be a youthful, but talented team. A district title, and then some is not out of the question for the Lobos in 2021. Longview JR WR Jalen Hale McKinney North Bulldogs Head Coach: Mike Fecci 69-61 (47-34) 12 seasons at McKinney North 2020 result: 3-7 (3-3), 5A D1 Bi-District Returners: O = 8, D = 4 Returning All District: 4 It has been an up and down era for McKinney North football under HC Mike Fecci; A true rollercoaster ride over the years. 2019 was one of the ‘up’ years for McKinney North as they ripped off a 10-2 record, winning the district title. But 2020 was not as pleasant. The Bulldogs were only able to muster up 3 wins. Still, they did enough in district play to make post season for the 5th straight year. The Bulldogs will look to make it 6 straight in 2021 behind 8 returning starters offensively, the 2nd most in the district. McKinney North was one of four teams in the district that started a sophomore QB as Gavin Constantine (5’10 170) returns for his JR season to lead the Bulldog offense. The programs’ all-time leading WR JJ Henry is off to Ole Miss, but the other wideouts return. Korbin Hendrix (6’2 170) is a tall rangy WR that started on the outside for the Bulldogs as a sophomore in 2020. SR WR Luke Paley (6’2 190) returns to his slot position; a 3 year varsity starter for McKinney North. JR WR Kyler Moore (5’8 160) also saw significant time as a sophomore and looks to be Henry’s replacement on the outside. Another 3 year starter is SR TE/DE Dylan Frazier who starts on both sides of the ball. At 6’5 260, Frazier is rated one of the top defensive ends in Texas; holding numerous FBS offers. His older brother Brandon Frazier is a TE at Auburn. The OL will be anchored by SR RT Seteye Akpabio (6’3 290), another 3 year starter and FBS recruit. There’s a high amount of experience returning offensively, but defensively there’s a lot of question marks particularly in the front 7. As mentioned before, Dylan Frazier returns at DE but the Bulldogs will have to replace the other 3 positions along the defensive front 4. SR Jake McClain (6’0 200) returns to his mike LB position after a second team all-district performance in 2020. SR OLB Marques Alexander (5’11 180) was also second team all-district in 2020. The last returning starter is CB David Walker (5’10 160), who was another sophomore starter last season. McKinney North never really has great sub-varsity teams but they always seem to play slightly better when they make it to the varsity level. The Bulldogs actually had a great 9th grade group in 2020 that probably would have won the 9th grade district title in a district without Longview and Highland Park. You can expect several players from that group to make an impact for McKinney North in 2021, specifically on defense. McKinney North SR DE/TE Dylan Frazier Wylie East Raiders Head Coach: Vacant 2020 result: 1-7 (0-6), No Playoffs Returners: O = 6, D = 5 Returning All District: 1 The new year will bring a new coaching staff to the Wylie East football program. Back in mid-December, Mike Dormady stepped down as HC, but will remain an employee within the district. In his 3 seasons as head coach, Wylie East accumulated a 5-24 record. The program failed to win a single district game in his 3 years as head coach. A new era is about to begin for the Raiders but whoever lands this job will not be short of weapons. JR QB TJ Washington (5’11 185) will return to the East offense for the 3rd straight year. Washington, who earned district newcomer of the year as a freshman back in 2019, is a dynamic talent at the QB position who recently just received his first FBS offer. Bam Bam Johnson graduates at RB, but Washington won’t be short of targets. SR WRs Kolby Atkins and Joshua Hollingsworth (5’10 175) return for East. Hollingsworth is a 3 year varsity starter. Another player that saw significant playing time at WR is JR CJ Jackson (5’10 160), who has been on varsity since his freshman year, and is also very good on the track. The OL will have to replace 3 positions but SR LT Zane Brown and SR RG Marcus Harbert (6’1 250) are back. The Raider offense also returns TE Michael Oparah (6’0 220). Another solid player is 3 year varsity vet SR Tyler Jackson (6’1 200), who is hearing from FBS schools as an athlete. He has spent time at RB, TE and LB. The lone returning all-district player on the roster is JR DE Anthony James (6’6 240). James is considered the top defensive linemen in Texas for the 2023 cycle, with early offers from Georgia, LSU, Texas and others. He’s also the lone returning starter in the East front 7 but if Tyler Jackson becomes a full time LB, that’s a good nucleus to build around. The secondary will be experienced with all 4 starters back: SR S Caden Roeschen (5’11 180), SR S Maddox Fraley (5’10 160), JR CB Jakari Alexander (5’10 165) and SR CB Jason Olford. Wylie East may not have a ton of wins the past few years but as recently as 2015-2016, the program was accomplishing 9-10 win seasons. The next guy up is certainly inheriting some nice foundation to get the program back on track. Wylie East JR DE Anthony James Tyler Lions Head Coach: Ricklan Holmes 71-38 (42-14) 9 seasons at John Tyler 2020 result: 2-7 (2-4), No Playoffs Returners: O = 9, D = 5 Returning All District: 3 The last two seasons have been a nightmare for Tyler High. A 3 win season in 2019 was followed by a 2 win season in 2020. Now the Lions are looking to avoid 3 straight seasons of 3 wins and below for the first time since the program went 6-24 under Kelvin Ratliff from 2002-2004. That was arguably the worst 3 year stretch in program history, and 17 years later, CUJO is looking to elude a similar 3 year run. The good news is there is plenty of experience and upcoming talent to help avoid it. The 9 starters that CUJO return on offense are the most in the district. The WR position is especially deep with 4 returning starters, 3 in which were all-district players as sophomores in 2020: JR Jadavion Lacy (6’1 175), JR Makavion Potts and JR Montrell Wade (6’2 180), who is one of the top WR’s in the state for the 2023 cycle. Potts also has D1 potential from his slot position. The OL brings back plenty of experience with JR LT Avery Coleman, SR LG Jordan Jackson (6'0 260) and SR RG Cornelius Hartsfield (5’10 230) all returning; Hartsfield being a 3 year starter for the Lions. No other team in the district rotated at the RB position the way Tyler High did last season. Look for 2024 RB Derrick McFall (5’11 175) to be more unleashed after seeing varsity carries as a freshman in 2020. 3 year varsity vet Eli Sanchez (5’9 165) returns at QB. Switching over to CUJOs 3-4 defense, both inside LBs return in SR LB Jacob Villela (5’11 180) and JR LB Tory Howland (6’2 205). SR OLB Eric Munoz (5’11 185) also returns, giving the Lions plenty of experience at the LB position. JR S Zavier Tatum (6’1 190) and sophomore CB Zachaun Williams (6’1 175) will lead the secondary. The biggest concern will be the defensive front where Ricklan Holmes will have to replace several players. Look for 2024 sophomore DE Jace Sanford (6’2 210) to make an impact for the Lions the next few years. The skill positions on this team are looking very good. Even the OL looks promising. IF the QB position comes along, CUJO could easily be a 3 seed in this district. If not it could be another long season. Retaining players will also be important this offseason as well. Tyler sophomore RB Derrick McFall Sherman Bearcats Head Coach: J.D. Martinez 24-28 (15-14) 5 seasons at Sherman 2020 result: 5-5 (4-1), 5A D1 Bi-District Returners: O = 3, D = 5 Returning All District: 0 After narrowly missing the playoffs in 2019, Sherman made the postseason as a 3 seed in 2020. A 5-5 season is not a lot to brag about in itself but Sherman’s 4-1 district record marked the programs’ best district outing since 2012. Talk about a program wide confidence booster going into the 2021 season. But there are major holes to fill with a good senior group graduating. To help fill holes Coach Martinez will look to a talented junior class that won district with a 7-2 record as freshmen in 2019. The bearcat JV did not have much success in 2020 but key sophomores being on the Bearcat varsity team had a lot to do with that. Graduation effected the Bearcat offense the most; losing 8 starters, including multiyear starter QB Tate Bethel. 2023 JR QB Phoenix Grant (6’1 180) backed up Bethel, and started at safety as a sophomore and figures to take over the QB spot. Good news for Grant is SR WR Elijah Chapman (6’4 180) returns. The only other returning starters on offense are SR LT Tavian Scruggs (6’3 250) and SR C Daniel Clark (5’10 255). On defense, there are a good amount of returners (5) but the Bearcats do lose several big names like LB Brandon Bonilla, who was the heart and soul of Sherman’s 3-3 defense the past few years. The good news is the entire defensive line returns in SR DE Anthony Gionfriddo, JR DT Chaz Brown (5’10.5 300) and SR DE Tito Chavez. Graduation was a huge blow to the LB positions but a name to know is 2023 JR OLB Logan Taylor (6’3 200) who saw significant playing time in 2020 as a sophomore. Phoenix Grant and Connor Clark (5’10 165) round out the returning starters on defense. Both started at safety positions in the secondary as sophomores, but as mentioned before, Grant will take over the QB position for the Bearcats so he may not be playing on both sides of the ball in 2021. SR CB Isaiah Jones (6’0 180) also saw significant playing time. Sherman’s JR class has talent and there are key pieces in the SR class. The Bearcats are a team that could finish anywhere from 3rd to 6th in this district. How well the other grades can complement that JR group will dictate that in 2021. Sherman JR safety Connor Clark West Mesquite Wranglers Head Coach: Frank Sandoval 1-9 (1-5) 1 season at West Mesquite 2020 result: 1-9 (1-5), No Playoffs Returners: O = 7, D = 2 Returning All District: 0 The 2020 season under first year HC Frank Sandoval was a rough one for the Wranglers. A big part of the 1-9 finish was bad defensive play. The West Mesquite defense gave up 35 PPG. To make matters even worse, the defense does not return much experience in 2021. The only two returning starters in the Wrangler 3-4 defense are defensive linemen Trevion Mitchell (6’5 275) and JD Cotton (6’2 270), both whom are seniors. Mitchell is a 3 year starter and potential FBS recruit at defensive end, but the coaching staff will have to replace the other 9 positions on defense, more than likely relying on move ups from sub-varsity teams that were not very good. On the bright side, the offense is a lot more experienced. SR RB D’Erian Mitchell returns to the backfield. JR Javion Jackson (5’11 155), SR Devin Duncan (6’2 170) and SR Jesus Nino (5’10 160) all return to West Mesquite’s WR core. The left side of the OL + C will need to be replaced but SR RG Donovan Hawthorne and JR RT Nicholas Singleton (6’3 310) both return. Frank Sandoval was certainly a good hire for West Mesquite coming into the season. Mexia was decent with him at the helm, and he has championship pedigree from his time on the Cedar Hill defensive coaching staff. But, West Mesquite’s problems appear to run deeper than returning starters or talent. The program appears to be having trouble keeping players. Going into the 2020 season, the Wranglers lost FBS 2022 QB Kevin Jennings to South Oak Cliff. They also lost FBS safety Jakobe Walton to McKinney High and others. It wasn’t long ago that West Mesquite was winning at least 7 games in a season. But it will be shocking to see the Wranglers finish anywhere but last in this district in 2021. LAST FIVE GAMES IN SERIES: 11.27.2020 - Longview 55, McKinney North 10 - Lobo Stadium FULL GAME LOG GAME PREVIEW & SERIES REVIEW: A week of reflection and improvement. That's what Longview focused on this past week with their only idle week of the 2021 season. The idle week comes off the back of a 56-14 victory over the Sherman Bearcats, retribution nearly 45 years in the making. After a 1976 playoff loss to the Bearcats, the Lobos finally got their long awaited meeting with Sherman after last year's meeting was canceled due to COVID-19 at Sherman High. While the Bearcats struck first in the contest, the Lobos made little work the rest of the way, dominating Sherman 56-7 the rest of the way. Longview's sophomore back in Taylor Tatum rushed for a career-high 175 yards, and added three rushing scores in the win. The victory sets up a win and your in situation for Longview Thursday in McKinney, as the Lobos take on the Bulldogs of McKinney North. Longview, sitting 3-1 in district play, has two games left in it's regular season and will need to win both to clinch a home playoff game for the 5th consecutive season. But first, a playoff berth must be clinched and that's what the Lobos head to McKinney ISD for the first time looking to do. A win would clinch Longview's 21st consecutive playoff appearance, a school record. The last time the Lobos failed to make the post season came back in 2000, under first year head coach Pat Collins. McKinney North also heads into the game fresh off a dominating victory over Sherman. The unexpected result puts the Bulldogs into the same position as Longview, with a win clinching a playoff berth and perhaps a home playoff game if week 11 results were to turn out in their favor. After such a poor start to the season, the Bulldogs being a game away from clinching the post season is definitely a sense of relief. This will be the 4th all-time meeting against McKinney ISD for Longview, having previously won all 3 meetings. The Lobos are 1-0 against each McKinney, McKinney Boyd and McKinney North. This will, however, be the first time the Lobos have ever traveled to the city of McKinney for a football game of any sort. Longview's game on Thursday will also mark the first time since 1955 that the Lobos will have played two Thursday games during a regular season. Heading into Thursday's game, the Lobos will be one touchdown away from history in the form of Jalen Hale. Hale tied Kamden Perry's receiving touchdowns in a career against Sherman, with his 23rd career score. The Tigers did not let up, scoring 47 points in the final frame to knock off Longview 107-7 at City League Park in Texarkana. Longview managed just 14 yards on the day, giving up 639 total yards. In 1927, Longview dominated Pittsburg in Pittsburg to the tune of 72-0. In 1932, Longview and Mineola battled to a 6-6 tie at Fair Park in Longview. In 1938, Don Fambrough scored three times as the Lobos rushed away from Kilgore for a 48-7 victory at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium. In 1955, Tony Rothrock rushed in from 1 yard out in the 1st quarter while Dub Thomas tallied a 3 yard score in the 4th but three Kilgore touchdowns sandwiched in-between gave Kilgore an 18-14 win over Longview at Lobo Stadium. In 1960, Longview fell behind 15-0 in the first half before Bill Ewing and Don Petty tallied two scores in the third quarter. Two 2-point conversions were missed, however, as Longview fell 15-12 to Marshall at Maverick Stadium. In 1966, Keith Parker gave Longview a 3-0 lead with a 21-yard field goal in the 2nd quarter before Marshall tallied two touchdowns. Steve Judy was able to return a 77-yard kickoff for a score but Longview ultimately fell 13-9 at Maverick Stadium in Marshall. In 1977, Dinky Edwards and Bobby Portley each tallied, with Jim Tutt’s field goal adding two more, as Longview rung up 245 yards rushing in a 17-7 win over Marshall at Lobo Stadium. In 1983, John Tyler took a 14-7 halftime lead before Joe Johnson tallied twice and Eric Harris scored from one yard out as Longview defeated John Tyler, 28-22, at Lobo Stadium. The Lobos rung up 412 total yards on the day, while holding the Lions to 211. In 1988, Ernest Hunter rushed for three scores and David Hill kicked a 20-yard field goal as Longview rushed for 374 yards while not completing a single pass in a 24-14 victory over John Tyler at Rose Stadium. In 1994, Juan Ingram’s 57-yard interception return for a score proved to be Longview’s only points in a 19-7 loss to John Tyler at Lobo Stadium. The Lobos managed just 108 yards on the night. In 2005, Michael George and David Robinson each tallied while Chris Ivory’s 46 yard reception proved to be the difference maker in a 21-14 Longview victory at North Mesquite. Al’Darius Thompson scored with 2:39 to play, and the Stallions then recovered the following onside kick to make it a game, before the Lobo defense stood up. In 2011, 7 different Lobos would contribute to the scoreboard as Longview rolled past Tyler Lee, 45-19, at Rose Stadium. Bivins Caraway finished with 195 yards passing and three passing scores. In 2016, Longview fell before 14-0 after the first quarter at Rockwall Heath’s Wilkerson-Sanders Memorial Stadium before D’Crayvan Polk scored twice with Kendrevian White’s two scores mixed in, in a 35-21 victory over the Hawks. Disappointment. Heartbreak. All the words and more that can sum up Longview's 21-16 loss at Highland Park last Friday night. The Lobos headed to University Park for the first time since 1966, and walked out with a five point loss in the second straight meeting against the Scots that ended by five points admist a ton of Longview errors. Trailing 7-3 at half, the Lobos saw a forced fumble returned for a score to open the second and that was that. While Longview fought back and had the ball with under 20 seconds to go, it was for naught as Longview could get no closer than those five points. The loss all but confirms that Longview's chance at a district crown has gone by the waist side for a second straight season. If a loss doesn't happen for the Scots, the Lobos will fail to win distrcit for the second straight season for the first time in the John King era. The win for the Scots also pushed them to a 3-game series lead against the Lobos. They currently sit as the only team in Texas to hold more than a 2-game lead over the Lobos, and one of just two teams in the county. Shreveport Byrd's 8-game lead is the worst series deficit for the Lobos, currently. The Lobos will now return home to take on the Sherman Bearcats, the first meeting in nearly 45 years. Last season, Longview was set to travel to Sherman for the first time before the Bearcats cited COVID reasoning and canceled the contest. That has not set well with many Longview fans in the last year, as many Sherman players and coaches went to twitter on Thursday morning claiming they were free to play. Whatever the fact, the game did not occur and Longview as not able to visit historic Bearcat Stadium. So this season, the Lobos welcome Sherman to Longview for the first time in a series that has more canceled games in it than it does games played. In 1955, the Lobos and Bearcats came to an agreement to play each other in Sherman. However, realignment forced the game to be canceled as Sherman had too many district opponent to play. The one game the two programs did face off in came back in 1976, when the two met at Texas Stadium in the Bi-District round of the 4A playoffs. A blocked punt led directly to Sherman's lone touchdown of the game. Jim Tutt's 33-yard field goal in the first quarter helped Longview get back into the game, but a 10-3 halftime deficit would be too much for the Lobos to overcome. The Lobos were able to get down to the Sherman 13 yard line on one drive late in the game, but an interception by Sherman would seal the deal and send the No. 2 ranked Lobos to an early exit from the post season. Longview returns to Lobo Stadium looking to win their 200th game at their stadium. Opened in 1976, the Lobos have played 243 contests heading into tonight. Two fumbles, 14 penalties and 138 penalty yards all helped plague the Lobos in their district opener against the West Mesquite Wranglers last Thursday. Longview jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead behind two Jalen Hale receiving scores, before the Wranglers fought back to tie the game as the two teams went into the break. It was helped by a poor pitch as the Lobos looked well on their way to a 21-0 lead. That poor pitch turned the game as Javion Jackson returned the fumble 68 yards for the score. In the second half, it was West Mesquite's turn to turn the ball over and have the game switch back to Longview's favor. The Wranglers were driving into Lobo territory when a double reverse pass back across the field was intercepted by Longview's Devean Isaac and returned it 53 yards to the Wrangler 15 yard line. 3 more interceptions later, and 35 points on the board, the Lobos ran away with a 56-28 victory over West Mesquite, winning their 4th straight district opener and moved to 16-2 in district openers under head coach John King. It was a record tying day for the 5-star receiver Jalen Hale, as his three scores tied a school record for receiving scores in a single game. He also moved into sole possession of 3rd place in Longview history for receiving scores in a career...as a junior. He passed former NFL receiver Malcolm Kelly with his three on Thursday night. Next up for the Lobos is a return to Lobo Stadium, following two energy filed victories. Longview takes on Wylie East for the 20th annual Green Out contest, which started back in 2002. The Lobos are 17-2 all-time in Green Out contests since the game began to take place. The Lobos have not lost a Green Out affair since John Tyler knocked the Lobos off in 2014. Longview's only other loss on Green Out night came in 2011 against #1 Allen. In district home opener, John King has coached the Lobos to a perfect 17-0 record, dating back to 2004. Longview last lost their district home opener in 2003, against #9 Tyler Lee, in a game Longview led 14-3 at halftime before falling 18-14. Longview and Wylie East will be meeting for the second time in their histories, with last season's extremely cold October meeting being the first. The Lobos dominated the contest from the get go, rolling to a 52-17 victory. The game was highlighted by a 75-yard kickoff return to open the second half by Jaquaris Cooper. Against Wylie ISD, the Lobos are a perfect 2-0. Longview also met Wylie High in 2015 during Regional Semi-Final round in the Lobos' first ever visit to AT&T Stadium in Arlington. 123 yards of penalties plagued the Lobos that day, but Longview was still able to walk away with a 35-14 victory. Longview enters (new) Lobo Stadium for 243rd time this Friday, dating back to 1976. The Lobos will be looking for their 199th victory all-time at their home stadium, having won the four games there. Longview, overall, has won 25 of their last 26 games at home and are a peachy 79-6 at home under head coach John King. Longview is an even better 48-2 in district contests under John King, with a 2016 loss to John Tyler and a 2020 loss to Highland Park keeping them from being perfect. For Wylie East, this will be the second longest road trip in school history. In 2016, Wylie East made the trip to play at Hallsville, defeating the Bobcats 49-0. Longview failed on the opening week of the year with that task. Last Friday, Longview got a second chance to end a long winning streak, this time the 32-game overall winning streak of the Bryant Hornets. Despite two turnovers and an inconsistent offense, the Lobos finally broke through with ending a long streak as they knocked off the 3-time defending 7A Arkansas State Champions by a 24-21 scoreline. The Lobos, who improved to 3-1 on the season, found themselves trailing right before half and late in the 3rd quarter only to quickly turn things around and grab a 24-14 lead midway through the third quarter. Bryant was able to add a touchdown on the final play of the game. The win for Longview improved them to 18-0 all-time on Homecoming night under head coach John King. The Lobos' last loss on homecoming night in 2003, when the No. 9 ranked Tyler Lee Red Raiders defeated the Lobos 18-14, after trailing 14-3 at halftime. Longview also won their 750th game as a football program, dating back to 1909. They become the 8th program in Texas high school football history to reach that 750 mark. That's what the Lobos can scream from the top of Rose Stadium, as Longview defeated their rivals to the west following a 46-20 over Tyler Legacy. Heading into the contest, many predictions saw the Red Raiders snapping the 19-year streak..and it looked as if it was going to be proven true at the start of the contest. The Red Raiders jumped out to a 10-0 lead thanks to an onside kick recovery to open the game, followed by a Red Raider fumble recovery inside the Lobo 20-yard line. With the way Legacy had scored the first two weeks and Longview's lack of an offense to begin the 2021 season, no one could be faulted for feeling as if they knew how the contest was going to end. This year's Lobos had other ideas. After a touchdown reception from Taylor Tatum, his first as a Lobo, from Jordan Allen, the Longview offense got going. Taylor Tatum rushed in to give Longview the lead, before Joshua Thomas took over at quarterback for the Lobos. With Thomas under center, only one drive ended without the Lobos putting up points, one that saw one of Longview's running back fumble the ball inside the 5-yard line. No doubt the Lobos still have things to work on, such as penalties and turnovers. But overall, it was a huge improvement for this year's group after posting just 21 points through the first two games. The Lobos' 17th win in a row over the Red Raiders is the second longest in school history, second only to their 19-game winning streak over the Marshall. The win also marked Longview's 9th consecutive over Tyler Legacy at Rose Stadium dating back to 2002. Overall, John King improved to 23-1 at Rose Stadium as head coach of Longview. Next up for the Lobos, is a date with a 3-time defending state champion in the Bryant Hornets. The Hornets have won 32 consecutive games dating back to a 34-28 loss at North Little Rock in 2018. In those 32 games, the Hornets have had just one contest settled within one score, a 44-40 victory over Cedar Hill Trinity Christian (out of Texas) last season at Bryant. The 3 and a half hour drive for the Hornets, however, will no doubt be one of the longest drives they've had in recent years (at the very least). For the two programs, it will be the first meeting between them. But they do have at least one connection as the last time Longview faced a team from the state of Arkansas, they faced the North Little Rock Charging Wildcats, a district mate of the Hornets. Each of the last three seasons, Bryant has defeated NLR in the state championship game. Last season's 27-17 final was the closest of those three contests. The Lobos faced NLR back in 2012, a week after losing their starting senior quarterback which forced them to put a sophomore in for the rest of the way in Desmond Chumley. The 2021 season for the Longview Lobos opened similarly how the 2020 season opened for them, a crushing, blow out defeat. It was a comedy of errors as the Lobos experienced penalties, fumbles, interceptions and even a blocked punt in their 40-7 opening season loss to the state number one team in the Denton Ryan Raiders. Longview, opening their 112th season of football, suffered the 3rd worst defeat to open a campaign in the history of their program last Saturday afternoon. It was the second quarter, for the second straight season, that did them in. After the Lobos held a 7-6 advantage after one quarter, the Ryan Raiders opened things up and strolled to a 33-7 halftime lead. The two defensive scores for Denton Ryan were the first defensive scores given up by a Lobo team since 2018. It was the first time Longview has given up multiple defensive scores in the same game since 2012 vs Austin Westlake, when they gave up three. Similar to that contest, once the wheels started coming off, they really came off. Multiple times, the Lobos had the ball in scoring position only to fumble it away, including one with the Lobos fumbling on the one yard line. For this week's opponent, things went pretty similarly. Four interceptions led to the demise of the Marshall Mavericks, as they opened their season with a 23-7 defeat at New Caney on Friday night. The Mavericks are coming off a season which saw them miss the post season for the first time since 2012. It was the Mavs' lowest output to open a season since 2016, when Marshall fell 34-7 at Tyler Lee. Marshall was able to muster just 169 total yards on the night. For the two programs, it will be another year meeting on the gridiron. The 111th time, in fact, of meeting on the gridiron and the 89th season in a row. Longview and Marshall first took to the grass field back in 1909, when the two schools battled to a 0-0 tie at Brown Park in Marshall. Since that November 25th day, the Lobos and Mavericks have gone just 8 years without meeting (1913, 1917, 1918, 1920, 1921, 1924, 1925 & 1932). And two of those years (1924 and 1920), the two schools had a game scheduled but were later canceled. The Mavericks controlled the series early on, up until the 1969 season, where they had a 13-game lead. The streak then started with a 17-16 Longview victory at Marshall thanks to Jimmy Hill's 34 yard field goal with 19 seconds remaining. What started was a 19-game winning streak that led all the way up to the 1988 season when the Mavs finally knocked off the Lobos, 28-0 at Lobo Stadium. However, the winning has continued to be heavily in favor of the Lobos despite two 3-game winning streak for the Mavericks. Longview is currently riding a 5-game winning streak over Marshall, and has won 19 of the previous 20 contests. Overall, since that 17-16 win back in 1969, Longview has a 43-9 record over their long time rivals to the East. Since Marshall's last win in 2015, the series has taken an even further turn to dominance for Longview. The Lobos have outscored Marshall 263 to 49 in the last five match ups, 21 of that coming last season. Even dating up to 2008, Longview had never scored 50 points in a game against the Mavs. Since scoring a 50-21 win in 2008, the Lobos now have scored 50 or more points against Marshall in six games including a series high 60 points back in 2018. For Marshall, returning to Lobo Stadium will not be a ideal to start their 2021 season, seeing as the Mavs have not won at Lobo Stadium since a 1998 victory that saw Marshall win 35-28 in double overtime. Since then, 9 consecutive defeats have come their way, with the closet game being in 2006 when the Lobos held off the Mavs, 38-35. The last 5 visits have been particularly rough for Marshall, with Longview winning by a combined score of 228 to 20, with there being three shut outs by the Lobo defense. Fresh off a season unlike any other in Lobo football, where most people were just happy to have been able to finish the season period, the Lobos head into the 2021 season with their biggest test to start a season since facing the 2008 Class 5A Division I State Champion Allen Eagles in 2009. Much like those Eagles, the Denton Ryan Raiders steamrolled through their regular season en route to their third state championship in program history. The meeting between Longview and Denton Ryan will be the first time in program history for the Lobos to open a season facing a team that had previously knocked them out of the post season. Last season, Denton Ryan and Longview battled to a 13-6 Ryan halftime lead. The Raiders dominated the second half though, rolling to a 27-9 victory at Mesquite’s Memorial Stadium. The 18 point loss was the largest playoff loss for the Lobos since a 38-10 loss to Austin Westlake in the 2012 playoffs. With the new season, Longview sees the departure of their all-time total and rushing touchdown leader in Kaden Meredith, who finished his Lobo football career with 60 total touchdowns and 57 rushing touchdowns. Stepping into that starting rushing spot, is expected to be sophomore sensation, Taylor Tatum, who already holds an offer from the University of Washington. Joining him on the field, is all-time offer holder at Longview High School in Jalen Hale, who as of this preview, holds 32 offers heading into his junior season. Jalen Hale’s 14 touchdowns in his first two season as a Lobo, already sits 5th all-time in receiving touchdown in Longview history, 9 behind record holder Kamden Perry. The big question for Longview this season, though, is who will be the starting quarterback. Junior to be Jordan Allen returns, but Josh Thomas, a transfer in from Jefferson, has thrown a wrench into the starting spot. Thomas, a senior, holds two offers heading into his first and final campaign as a Lobo. As for the Raiders, departure of senior Bear Alexander to Fort Worth Brewer as highlighted their off season in 2021. Still, the Raiders bring back heavy numbers on a defense that was beyond impressive throughout the 2020 state championship campaign. The Raiders will be breaking in a new quarterback themselves, as Seth Henigan departs for Memphis following his undefeated senior year. Khalon Davis takes over the reigns as the Raiders look to continue their winning ways in 2021. The Raiders head into the 2021 season having won 59 consecutive regular season games, 21 non-district games and 15-overall. But a 23 yard touchdown run by Carey Fortson sparked Longview in the third quarter to 28 points and a 28-17 lead midway through the 4th quarter. A Da’Cedric Hunt rush, an unbelievable run by Tyler McCray and an Aaron Johnson run were the scores for the Lobos. Allen pulled to within three points late in the 4th but Longview held on for a thrilling 28-25 victory of open the year. In 2015, Longview and Lufkin met a year after Longview overcame a 28-point deficit to knock the Panthers out by 1-point…and this rivalry game was no different. Malik Jackson got the scoring going for the Pack before Longview’s Michael Ross tallied. Tylan Miller gave the Lobos the lead in the 2nd quarter before a 92-yard punt return from Savon Fields had the game tied at 14 at halftime. Tylan Miller gave the Lobos the lead in the 4th quarter, before Jadrien Bennett pulled in the touchdown to pull Lufkin within 1-point again in the last minute of the game. Solid pieces return for the Longview on both sides of the ball as the Lobos make the move from 6A to 5AD1. It starts in the backfield with SR RB Kaden Meredith (5’9.5 180) who is eyeing Longview rushing records after an all-state performance in 2019. SR FB Markevion Haynes (5’9.5 205) started in Longview’s backfield but battled injuries in 2019. He’s now 100% and ready to go. Meredith and Haynes are going into their third year in Longview’s backfield. Longview rotated a ton at WR in 2019, and the two best return in Sophomore WR Jalen Hale (6’3 175) and SR WR CJ Hopkins (6’0 170). Hale was the first freshman to play varsity football at Longview in nearly 3 decades and is a future major recruit. TE will be solid as usual with SR Austin Pencheon (6’0 200) elevating from TE2 to TE1. SR LG Tavion Sterling (6’1 290) will anchor Longview’s offensive line. Longview’s defensive front seven should once again be a strong point on the entire team as SR DL Joe Jones (6’3 275) is back to anchor the DL. Highland Park Fighting Scots Head Coach: Randy Allen 250-35 21 seasons at Highland Park 2019 result: 11-2 (7-0), 5A D1 Regional Returners: O = 4, D = 4 Returning All State: 0 Returning All District: 9 A huge senior class graduates for Highland Park, a group that helped bring Highland Park two state titles the past three seasons. However, we have seen this story and how it unfolds numerous times over the years with Highland Park under long time, legendary HC Randy Allen. Those wins aren’t disappearing in 2020. First off, in case you were wondering, Highland Park does have another signal caller that will play D1 college football. SR Brayden Schager (6’2 195) is one of the best kept secrets in DFW. 2022 QB Hayden Ferguson (6’3 220) is also on college recruiter radars. So Highland Park is in good hands at the QB position as usual. Good news as they’ll need the skill at the QB position since the skill positions on offense will be inexperienced. What won’t be inexperienced is the offensive line. Highland Park may have the best OL in all of 5A in 2020. Four of five return up front for the Scots in SR LT Jack Leyrer (6’6 275), SR LG Sam Morse (6’1 250), SR C Will Gibson (6’4 280) and SR RT Henry Hagenbuch (6’2 260). There’s a ton of experience among those four seniors up front. On defense, Highland Park has to replace the entire defensive front, but JR DE Jack Curtis (6’4 220) saw significant playing time as a sophomore and is a future major FBS recruit. Behind him at LB is SR Patrick Turner (6’2 220) who also has high recruiting stock going into spring. The Highland Park secondary, much like the OL, brings back a lot of experience. SR DB Sam Session (5’10 165), SR S Walker Cobb (6’1 185) and SR CB Ford Frazar (5’11 160) all return in the secondary. Cobb and Frazar were 1st team all-district players in 2019.Also, talk about a tough stadium to go into and win, Highlander Stadium makes a strong case for being the toughest place to play in Texas. Since Randy Allen took over the Scots in 1999, Highland Park is a whopping 107-2 at home. Most recently Highland Park had the longest active home winning streak at 33 games before Frisco Lone Star snapped it Week 3 of 2019. Highland Park may be losing a ton, and on the surface it appears that way. But when you dive deeper, Highland Park is clearly on the way to another big season. Don’t be fooled; the Scots will be no pushovers in 2020. Prince Dorbah may be graduating from this Highland Park defense, but 2022 Jack Curtis appears to be next man up and already getting FBS attention. Also a stud on the baseball field as well. Sherman Bearcats Head Coach: J.D. Martinez 19-23 (11-13) 4 seasons at Sherman 2019 result: 6-4 (3-3), No Playoffs Returners: O = 5, D = 5 Returning All State: 0 Returning All District: 5 A key week seven loss in Texarkana to Texas High ultimately resulted in Sherman missing out on playoff action in 2019. But there are some bright spots for Bearcat faithful to look forward to in 2020 that could result in a return to the post season. The brightest spot would have to be the Bearcat passing attack where four of five all district players return. It starts with SR QB Tate Bethel (6’0 175) who put up 1,935 passing yards and 23 total TD’s. That was 2nd most passing yardage in district 7-5A behind McKinney North’s Dillon Markiewicz. All of his top targets who were also all district players return in SR WR Sean Husband (5’9 170), SR WR/CB Benji Omayebu (5’9 175) and SR TE/WR Jacoby Hunt (6’3 203). SR RT Matt Parks (6’0 235) is the lone returner up front for the Bearcats. Five starters also return on defense for Sherman. Omayebu and SR Jeff Banks (5’10 165) return to their starting CB spots. SR SS Mathias Coleman (5’11 185) was all district in 2019 and was one of the best defensive players in 7-5A. SR MLB Brandon Bonilla (5’10 215) returns in the middle of the Bearcats’ 3-3 defense. SR DE Donja Orr-Knight (5’10 195) is the lone returner on the defensive line. Sherman will have to address four holes on the OL as well as holes in the defensive front, but everything around those two areas have solid foundation. The Bearcat JV did have a 0-10 year in 2019 but the 9th grade team went 7-2, winning the district title. There were also several key 2022 guys on varsity like WR Elijah Coleman (6’3 170) who caught 3 TD’s as a sophomore and has a lot of potential. Bearcat Stadium is one of the toughest places to play in all of 5A and Sherman is only a year removed from post season play. A playoff appearance for the Bearcats certainly isn’t out of the question in 2020. Special teams, WR, DB....SR ATH Benji Omayebu does it all for Sherman. Maybe one of the best utility players in all of 5AD1. McKinney North Bulldogs Head Coach: Mike Fecci 66-54 (44-31) 11 seasons at McKinney North 2019 result: 10-2 (6-0), 5A D1 Area Returners: O = 4, D = 6 Returning All State: 0 Returning All District: 8 It has been an up and down era for McKinney North football under HC Mike Fecci. A true rollercoaster ride over the years. 2019 was one of the ‘up’ years for McKinney North as they ripped off a 10-2 record, winning district 7-5A and advancing to 5A D1 area round ultimately losing to a good Lancaster team. Big names from a program record breaking offense like RB Manny Fincher, TE Brandon Frazier and QB Dillon Markiewicz, who was 7-5A’s most valuable player, all graduate. All three will be playing D1 football on Saturdays now. Tough players to replace but quality remains on this team. For one thing, McKinney North returns one of the best WR’s in all of 5A. SR WR JJ Henry (6’0 180) was 7-5A co-offensive player of the year as a junior after hauling in 76 receptions for over 1400 yards and 18 total TDs. Henry is breaking every McKinney North receiving record in the book. McKinney North appears to be solid up front with three all-district players back in SR LT Brandon Nelson (6’4 300), SR RT Seth Holmes (6’2 285) and JR RG Seteye Akpabio (6’3 315). Akpabio is one of the best class of 2022 guards in the state. Trench play will be a strength on the Bulldog defense as well as all four defensive linemen return. JR DE Dylan Frazier (6’5 250) was 7-5A’s defensive newcomer of the year and is emerging as one of the top defensive linemen in Texas for class of 2022. If the name sounds familiar, his brother was TE Brandon Frazier who was one of the most highly recruited 2020 TE’s in the nation. SR Ethyn Dennis (6’3 200) returns at the other DE position, a first team all-district selection due to his long frame, athleticism and ability to get into backfields. SR’s Yarmon Evans (5’11 260) and Keyon Davis (6’0 270) return to their positions in the interior defensive line. The other two defensive returners are located in the secondary: JR S Luke Paley (6’2 180), who could also be in the mix at WR, and SR CB Michael Norris (5’11 165). There wasn’t a lot of success for McKinney North’s subvarsity teams as they went a combined 7-12 but Mike Fecci, 7-5A coach of the year, and his Bulldogs will be looking to build off 2019’s success. JJ Henry is as dangerous as they come at the WR position. Henry is breaking McKinney North receiving records on top of breaking defenders ankles. West Mesquite Wranglers Head Coach: Frank Sandoval 0-0 (0-0) 1st season at West Mesquite 2019 result: 2-8 (2-4), No Playoffs Returners: O = 5, D = 9 Returning All State: 0 Returning All District: 4 West Mesquite is cracking in a new head football coach in 2020 after Jeff Neill was reassigned after seven seasons at the helm. MISD ultimately chose Coach Frank Sandoval, and what a great hire that was. Sandoval comes from 4A Mexia where he led them to several playoff appearances the past few years. Before that, he was a defensive assistant under former Cedar Hill HC Joey McGuire. So not only is he bringing a winning attitude to a culture that desperately needs it, he brings championship pedigree. And for Sandoval, he couldn’t have arrived at a better time. West Mesquite returns 14 starters, amongst the highest in the district. 5 of them come on offense, led by JR QB Kevin Jennings (6’0 165) who is a dual threat DFW sleeper and the leader of a talented 2022 class for the Wranglers. The WR depth will be insane, as Jennings completed passes to seven different WR’s in 2019, all of which return. This includes SR WR/S Jakobe Walton (5’11 175) who is one of the best utility players in DFW. The OL will be anchored by SR LT Lenny Medrano (6’2 280), will have to replace four starters up front. Coach Sandoval is a defensive guy, and his Wrangler defense returns a whopping 9 starters. The entire DL returns, led by JR Trevion Mitchell (6’4 235) who could be emerging as a D1 prospect this off-season. All three linebackers return in SR OLB Diego Nino (5’9 200), SR LB Jose Torres (5’9 185) and SR OLB Augustine Pokowa (5’9 180). In the secondary, Jakobe Walton will return to his free safety position. SR SS Brodrick Benton (5’10 180) and SR CB Clivarion Walker (5’10 170) round up the returners in the secondary. Think about this, about 20 players return for West Mesquite who either started or received significant playing time. 7 of them were from the 2022 class. That’s an insane amount of experience returning. The Wranglers always had the horses but a lot for West Mesquite depended on who Mesquite ISD would hire as their next head coach. They hit a homerun with Coach Sandoval. Jakobe Walton is another strong utility player in this district. He's a focal point on both sides of the ball for West Mesquite and has already reported several D1 offers. John Tyler Lions Head Coach: Ricklan Holmes 69-31 (40-10) 8 seasons at John Tyler 2019 result: 3-8 (3-3), 5A D1 Bi-District Returners: O = 6, D = 5 Returning All State: 0 Returning All District: 4 The worst season in Coach Ricklan Holmes tenure as John Tyler’s HC came in 2019. The Lions turned in a 3-8 season and although JT squeezed into the postseason, it was arguably the worst season for the program since 2007. CUJO will have to rely on experience and pieces from a talented but young 2023 group to push them in the right direction in 2020. Experience in particular, where JT returns 11 starters. Most of which resides on the offensive side of the ball. JT has a pair of runners returning who received significant playing time in SR Kameron Medlock (5’8 160) and JR Jakyron Lacy (6’0 195). JT may have to lean on the running game so look for those two to share carries for JT in 2020. Up front is where JT may be at peak strength. The Lions return nearly the entire OL with JR LG Cornelius Hartsfield, C LeTavion Erwin, JR RG Kadarius Tave and SR RT Ashton Williams returning. JR WR Robert Draper returns outwide. On defense, JT returns two on the defensive line in SR DL Preston Johnson and SR DL LaTravion Hawkins who turned in a 1st team all-district performance in 2020. The CUJO secondary is looking promising. SR CB Keelan Erwin had an all-district performance in 2020. Both safety positions return in SR S Travion Ates and rising sophomore S/WR Xavier Tatum. The largest area of concern on the entire team would have to be at the LB level where JT will replace all four starters. They will look to a subvarsity that went combined 11-9 for replacements. JT is a program of rich tradition and high expectations and the ceiling of John Tyler’s season in 2020 will depend a lot on the QB situation which appears to be in the air going into the spring. Kitan Crawford may be graduating but 2023 Montrell Wade has been accumulating offers since he first stepped on JT's campus. Whether WR or CB look for Wade to be utilized on both sides of the ball for CUJO. Wylie East Raiders Head Coach: Mike Dormady 3-17 (0-12) 2 seasons at Wylie East 2019 result: 2-8 (0-6), No Playoffs Returners: O = 8, D = 5 Returning All State: 0 Returning All District: 1 The past two seasons have been fairly rough for the Wylie East football program. And not just on the varsity level. The Raider 9th grade went 2-6 while the JV went 3-6-1 in 2019. That’s a tough pill to swallow. On a positive note, the program returns the highest number of offensive starters in the district. SR QB Cade Adamson (5’11 170) returns to lead the Raider offense. Almost all of his targets return in JR Josh Hollingsworth (5’10 170) and a pair of 2023 wideouts in CJ Jackson and TJ Washington (5’10 170). Washington is the lone returner on the team that landed on the all-district list. At RB, SR Bam Johnson (5’8 180) also returns and could have a breakout year behind an offensive front that returns SR LG Orlando Melchor, SR RG Frank Moslener and SR RT Javan Lopez (5’11 255). There are more holes to fill on defense but experience returns in the interior defensive line in SR’s Reggie Brooks (6’3 295) and William Schulmeistrat (6’3 260). GilbertVilla returns at LB after seeing a ton of time as a sophomore. SS Caden Roeschen (5’8 165) also saw a ton of time as a sophomore while SR Cade Dorethy returns at his CB spot. Wylie East has yet to win a district game under HC Mike Dormady. It’ll be very tough to end the drought in 2020, but Wylie East is a program that isn’t too far off from 9 and 10 win seasons. A new year awaits and anything is possible. It's not often that you see freshmen land on the all district team, but that's what 2023 WR/QB TJ Washington accomplished in 2019. He'll be a very important player for East in 2020 and projects to be a FBS recruit for the 2023 cycle.

The two schools have never played on December 26th. LAST FIVE GAMES IN SERIES First Meeting. FULL GAME LOG GAME PREVIEW & SERIES REVIEW: #3 in the state. 10-0 record. Scored 80 points in four contests. Averaging over 60 points a game. Longview came into Mesquite Memorial Stadium in the Class 5A Division I Area round knowing that the Lancaster Tigers were every bit as good as their record and stats suggested. Slight underdogs, the game looked to be an uphill climb right off the bat, as the Tigers ran for a 75 yard touchdown on the first place from scrimmage. Thankfully for the Lobos, the game didn't end there. After back and forth punches, the Lobos ran off 42 consecutive points to take full control of their game on the way to a dominating 56-20 victory. The win avenged last season's Area Round loss to Dallas Jesuit for the Lobos, while the Tigers head out of the Area round for the second time in the last three seasons. Kaden Meredith had two touchdowns in the win, to push his season total to 27 total and 26 rushing scores. Both are tied for second all-time in Longview single season history, one shy of the school record. Jalen Hale picked up two touchdowns in the win as well, pushing his season total to 10 receiving scores. Hale became the 5th Lobo receiver to tally at least 10 receiving touchdowns in a single season. His 13 receiving scores in his two years on varsity sits tied for 5th all-time in Lobo history. He is just a sophomore. With the win over the #3 team in the state, the Lobos improve to 4-0 under John King as head coach against the third ranked team. Waiting for them in the third round of the playoffs, is another ranked squad. One the Lobos have no history with. The No. 1 ranked Denton Ryan Raiders. The Raiders have steamrolled most of their opponents this season, carrying the No. 1 ranking the entire season. Denton Ryan reached the Division I Region II Semi-Finals with a dominating victory over the College Station Cougars, a game that saw the Raiders lead 52-7 before the Cougars added some fourth quarter scores late. The Lobos and Raiders meet for the first time at Mesquite Memorial Stadium. Last Friday's victory over Lancaster was Longview's first playoff victory at Memorial since a 2001 win over Dallas Kimball. Overall, Longview is 9-3 at the stadium with the last loss coming in 2010 to North Mesquite which ended a 36-game district winning streak that snapped seven seasons. While Longview and Denton Ryan have never met on the football field, the Lobos have met a Denton ISD school four times in their history. Longview is 3-1 all-time against Denton ISD, with the Lobos meeting Denton High back in 1950 in a 41-0 win and meeting Denton Guyer three consecutive seasons in the State Semi-Finals (twice in 4A and once in 5A). The last meeting came in 2010, when the Lobos jumped out to a 17-0 lead before the Wildcats came rushing back. Longview held a 27-21 lead with under a minute to go before Guyer blocked a punt and on the next play scored the winning touchdown in a 28-27 Wildcat victory. The Lobos have met the state's top ranked team five times under John King. The Lobos are 1-4 in those games, with the win coming in 2009 over Allen. Being an underdog isn't common for Longview, but it is something that..in the past...has brought out the best in Longview. It will be a huge task for the Lobos to walk out of Memorial with a win this week, but one thing you won't see is Longview back down from a challenge. While the teams had agreed to a non-district series prior to realignment, Lufkin being paced in a 9-team district ruined the hope for a game this season. Until, every thing fell exactly the way it needed to so that the two squads could meet for the 84th time. The two squads will face off for the 11th time in the post season, and for the 4th time in the post season in the last 7 seasons. The only season, in the last 7, that the two schools didn't meet when they were in the same class was in 2016. The Lobos have won all three of the previous playoff meetings in those last 7 seasons, including a 28-point comeback in 2014. The last playoff meeting came in 2017, when the two teams traded touchdowns back and forth the entire second half. Before Kamden Perry hauled in a touchdown pass from Haynes King with under a minute to go to bring home the 33-32 victory in the Class 6A Division II State Quarterfinals. The Lobos roll into their bi-district contest with Lufkin on a two-game winning streak that saw the Lobos outscore their opponents 113-24. Their latest victory came over the Tyler Lions, 58-14. The win for Longview was the largest margin of victory in their 97-game series with the Lions, and the 58 points was the first time the Lobos had ever scored 50 or more on Tyler High. Kaden Meredith's three touchdown gave him 55 for his career, tying the school record for most touchdowns in a career. Meredith was pulled after the first quarter, when Longview led 35-0. Longview is entering the playoffs for the 46th time in their history, and the 20th consecutive season dating back to 2001. The Lufkin Panthers clinched their 23rd consecutive playoff berth, dating back to the 1998 season, with their second best offensive performance of the season in a 56-13 victory over Waller. As Longview has dominated their last two opponents, the Panthers have rolled over their last two to the tune of a 114-13 scoreline. The Panthers were sitting at 3-4 on the season following their loss to College Station (45-21). After a forfeit win vs Cleveland, the Panthers saved their season with back to back wins over Conroe Caney Creek and Waller. Lufkin's 6 wins on the season are the fewest for the Pack since 2014, when the Panthers finished 6-5 following a 43-42 loss to Longview in the first round. Lufkin heads to Lobo Stadium for their 23rd all-time visit. Longview has won 7 in a row over the Panthers at Lobo Stadium, dating back to a 2003 14-0 loss to then #5 Lufkin. Overall, Longview has won 4 in a row over their rivals to the South. And following an 11-game winning streak by Lufkin, Longview has retaken control of the series, winning 12 of the last 16 meetings. The last three contests, however, have all finished as one score games. Last season, Longview rolled into Abe Martin Stadium and grabbed a 24-21 victory over the Panthers for just the second time since 1997. The two teams have faced off 10 times overall in the post season, with Longview winning 6 of the 10. The first playoff meeting came back in 1936, when Lufkin knocked off Longview 12-0 in the old Lobo Stadium. Longview got revenge the next season though with a 19-0 victory at Panther Stadium on their way to the 1937 1A State Title. The two teams wouldn't meet again until 1940, when the Lobos scored two 4th quarter tallies to knock off the Panthers 19-12 at Lobo Stadium. In 1942, Lufkin hosted Longview and ran the Lobos out of the stadium in a 33-0 beat down. In 1947, the Lobos were held to just 52 yards on the day to prove why they were massive underdogs. But it didn't matter as an extra point made all the difference in a 7-6 victory over the Panthers at old Lobo Stadium. The two teams wouldn't meet in post season play again until 2002, when they would meet for the third time that season. At an overcapacity Rose Stadium, Lufkin kicked a field goal in the dying seconds of the game to knock off Longview, 24-21, in the 5A Division II State Quarterfinal. Lufkin would again knock Longview off in 2004, before 27,000+ at Homer Bryce Stadium in Nacogdoches. Longview jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead in the second quarter, and led 21-17 heading into the 4th quarter. But Lufkin's Jovorski Lane was too much as the Panther won 31-21 in the 5A Division II Regional round meeting. Longview and Lufkin would meet at Rose Stadium again in 2014, when the Lobos knocked off Lufkin after coming from 28-point down and completing a two-point conversion with under 40 seconds to go in a 43-42 Lobo win. The two teams would have a rematch in 2015 at Rose, once again, where Longview rolled out with a strong second half in a 31-10 victory. And in 2017, Longview would advance to the Class 6A Division II State Semi-Final after Kamden Perry's leaping touchdown to knock the Panthers out by a 33-32 scoreline. Longview will be hosting fourth consecutive home playoff game as they enter Friday. The Lobos haven't lost at Lobo Stadium in post season play since a 24-14 loss to Bryan in 1984. It'll be a huge rivalry game in the 5A Division I Bi-District round this Friday. Another one in the storied history of their series. Longview trailed 12-6 at halftime before Lebus scored the winning tally in the fourth quarter from three yards out. In 2010, Longview grabbed a 17-0 halftime lead over Denton Guyer before the unthinkable happened. Despite still leading 27-21, and a chance to run the clock out, the Lobos still snapped the ball with 8/9/10 seconds left on the play clock. The Wildcats forced a fourth down with 17 seconds remaining and proceeded to block the punt. Quint Gardener hauled in a 15 yard passing score on the next play, and with the extra point, Denton Guyer would avenged their past two losses to Longview with a 28-27 win over the Lobos in the Class 5A Division II State Semi-Finals.

The three headed monster has led the way for the Lobos all season long, and Friday night's match up with arch rival Lufkin was no different. Behind an impressive defense, the three Lobos rolled all over the Lufkin Panthers to the tune of 41-5. The 36 point victory was the largest margin of victory for Longview since 1976. The win gave Longview their first 5-game winning streak over Lufkin since 1989-1993. Lufkin continues to be winless in Lobo Stadium, dating back to the 2003 season. With three touchdowns on Friday night, Kaden Meredith set the new school record for touchdowns in a career, currently standing at 58. Meredith's three rushing scores also passed Fred Talley's school record for rushing scores in a career. Meredith now has 55 rushing tallies since 2018. Now the real gauntlet begins for the Lobos. Longview heads to Mesquite to take on the Lancaster Tigers, the third ranked team in the state at the end of the regular season. The Tigers have been rolling all season long. Lancaster, 10-0 for the first time in school history, has scored 587 points in 9 actual games played. Lancaster had one win by forfeit. More impressively, the Tigers have given up just 50 points all season long. Lancaster has topped 80 points in four games and recorded a shut out in three. For Longview, coming into this year's Area round game, the Lobos are looking to avenge last season's upset loss to Dallas Jesuit in the same round. The Rangers ended Longview's 27-game winning streak in that loss, 27-25. On Lancaster's side of things, the Tigers are looking to justify their status among the elite teams in Class 5A Division I. Last year, the Tigers were able to make it to the state quarterfinals before falling to Frisco Lone Star, 38-20. Longview and Lancaster have met once previously, also in the Area round. Back in 2008, the Lobos rushed for 372 yards which led the way to a 49-22 victory at Kincaide Stadium. One of the biggest things to note from that meeting was Longview setting a school record with a 99-yard interception return for a score in the fourth quarter of the game. Alonte Darden had that pick six. Of course, for Longview, that game was apart of a run that ended with the Lobos returning to the State Championship game for the first time in 11 years. Longview will be returning to Mesquite Memorial Stadium for the first time since 2016, when the Lobos knocked off North Mesquite, 49-35. The Lobos are 8-3 all-time at Mesquite Memorial Stadium, but the Lobos hold a 1-2 record in post season games at the stadium. The last time Longview visited Mesquite Memorial Stadium in the post season it turned out to be one of the darkest days in Lobo playoff history. Longview, in 2005, was ranked 3rd in the Class 5A AP poll to end the regular season and headed to Mesquite to take on 6-4 South Garland in the bi-district round. The game turned out to be a huge defensive battle until South Garland took a 14-13 lead with half a quarter to play. Longview would drive down deep inside Colonel territory, only to miss a 21-yard field goal with under 30 seconds to play and South Garland would hold on for their massive upset. Longview has lost in the Bi-District round just once since that day, going 14-1 in bi-district games with the only loss being on another missed field goal at Beaumont West Brook in 2016. It will be a slobber knocker of a game with both teams looking to advance to the Regional Semi-Finals.
