What turned into an early than expected off season for the Longview Lobos, after an upset loss to Dallas Jesuit in last year’s area round playoff game, soon became an extended off season as COVID 19 reared it’s ugly head pushing the 2020 season back a full month. However, the season is finally upon us and the Lobos are set to take the field against a familiar foe. Longview already had many questions to answer heading into the 2020 season, with the loss of 3-year starting quarterback Haynes King. Taking over the helm will be the biggest question the Lobos have to answer when they take on the Temple Wildcats inside AT&T Stadium. While the Lobos saw their school record 27-game winning streak come to a streaking halt in their last game, the Wildcats saw these same green wolves in their last game with Longview and Temple meeting in the bi-district round last November. Longview knocked off Temple at Lobo Stadium, 41-10. The Lobos jumped out to a 34-10 halftime lead, before Kaden Meredith put the game out of reach in the third quarter to finish of the scoring. With the new season, the Lobos look forward to a new class with the drop to Class 5A Division I in February’s UIL realignment. Longview drops to Class 5A for the first time since 2015. The Lobos will also be returning to AT&T Stadium for the first time since their 2018 Class 6A Division II State Championship contest against Beaumont West Brook, where Longview ended their 81-year state title drought with a 35-34 victory. It will be Temple’s first visit back to AT&T since 2016, when the Wildcats fell to Highland Park in the Class 5A Division I State Championship game. Longview and Temple will meet for the 7th time, with the Lobos having won four of the six previous contests. The two schools first met in 1937, when Longview hosted the Wildcats in the 1A State Quarterfinals. The Lobos won 19-12, behind a 3-yard run by Frank Lebus in the 4th quarter. The Wildcats would return the favor in the 1940 2A State Quarterfinals with a 24-13 victory at Woodson Field. After a Lobo non-district victory in 1954, the two schools would not meet again until the 1993 5A Division II Area round, where the defending 5A Division II State Champion Wildcats would fight off a scrappy Longview squad with two fourth quarter touchdowns to run away with a 28-7 victory over the Lobos at Pennington Field in Bedford. The Lobos and Wildcats would next meet in 2011, when the two schools met in the 5A Division II Bi-District round. Despite a very windy day at Tiger Stadium in Corsicana, Longview would hold onto a 24-3 victory. Longview’s 4th win came in last season’s bi-district meet up. Longview head coach John King will enter his 17th season as head coach, holding a 179-37 record in his previous 16 seasons. King’s teams are 9-7 in the opening week of the season, though Longview has won their last three season opening games in a row. The Lobos are 70-33-7 all-time in season opening contests. Coming into the season, Longview's Haynes King was all the talk about this 2019 Lobo squad. After week one against Lufkin, all the talk is about how impressive the defense was. The Lobos, despite a less than stellar performance from King, relied on the defense in the fourth quarter to bring home the win and they did just that. After stopping Lufkin on a 3 and out, the Lobos fumbled a punt on their own side of the field. Two drives later, including having given up another turnover with under 3 minutes to go, the Lobo defense bowed and brought home Longview's just second win at Abe Martin Stadium since 1997. The 24-21 win improved Longview to 1-0 on the season, giving them their 4th consecutive win over their arch rival Lufkin and also extended a winning streak that stretched back to last season's 16-0 State Championship squad. Longview also improved to 99-24 in this decade, a school record for wins within a decade. With the week one victory, the Lobos now welcome another long time rival to their home opener in the Marshall Mavericks. Marshall came in extremely high in the rankings for 5A Division II, but after a two hour lightning delay, saw their season start on the wrong side of things with a 27-20 setback to the hands of the Tyler Lee Red Raiders. The Mavs turned the ball over four times in their loss, that saw the Red Raiders lead throughout. Marshall and Longview will meet for the 109th time, with the two schools having met consecutively since the 1933 season, 87 seasons ago. The Lobos, riding a three-game winning streak over the Mavericks, have dominated the series in recent years running up a 17-1 series record in the last 18 years. Overall, since 1969, the Lobos are on a 41-9 run against their rivals to the East. Early in the series, it was Marshall who dominated. From 1909 to 1931, the Mavericks held an 18-2-2 record over the Lobos. The two teams did not play in 1932. Since then, Longview has controlled things apart from one six game Marshall winning streak in the late 40s into the early 50s. Since that 1932 break, Longview has stormed over the Mavericks to the tune of 59-24-3. The last five meetings between Longview and Marshall, however, has seen historical highs for the Lobos against the Mavericks. Prior to 2014, Longview had only registered 50 or more points against the Mavericks just once in their history. Since then, the Lobos have managed 56 twice and 60 once. Longview's 60 pointer last season at Maverick Stadium, was the most points the Lobos had ever scored against the Mavericks and the most ever scored at Maverick Stadium. It's all about improving in Week 2, and the Lobos will need to continue to do that if they are to extend a number of streaks currently going. In 1985, the Lobo defense shut down Fort Worth’s Eastern Hill Highlanders to the tune of a total of 93 yards on the night. Brian Williams hauled in a 13-yard pass to get Longview on the board. Clyde Boyd and Jason Baird were the only other Lobos to tally points, as Longview rolled to a 17-0 victory at Lobo Stadium. In 1991, Dion Marion tallied three touchdowns and Charles West hauled in another as the Killeen Kangaroos passed all over the Longview Lobos, 27-7, at Lobo Stadium. John Washington was the only Lobo to tally in the season opener, hauling in a 19-yard passing touchdown. In 1996, Waco’s Joseph Montgomery rushed in from one yard out to give the Lions a 7-0 lead in the 4th quarter. Tajuan Stoker had different ideas, however, coming right back with back to back touchdowns. Adrian Lee would return a 21-yard fumble for a score to give Longview a final score victory of 23-7 at Paul Tyson Stadium. In 2002, welcoming in the #2 team in the country, the Lobos and Evangel Eagles traded blow for blow for three quarters. Evangel took a 28-21 lead into the 4th quarter, before the Lobos took off. Alex Cammack kicked a 17-yard field goal late in the 4th quarter, before Marcus Maxey picked off a David Booty pass and preserved the 31-28 victory over Evangel that pushed Longview back into the state spotlight for the first time in five years. Joel Armstrong tallied two scores, while Chris Jones and Malcolm Kelly tallied the other two touchdowns for the Lobos. In 2013, despite trailing 7-0 after one quarter to the Mavericks of Marshall, Jeremy Powell and Ja’Mycal Hasty would each tally two touchdowns to give Longview a 26-14 victory over the Mavs at Maverick Stadium in Marshall. Longview rushed for 331 yards on the day, while holding the Mavs to 85 on the ground. It was Longview’s 13th victory in a row over their rivals from the East.

The phrase every high school football program aspires to be going into a new season. The Longview Lobos, get that honor in 2019. The Lobos finished off the 2018 football season with a staggering come from behind victory over Beaumont West Brook, 35-34, in front of over 48,000 in attendance at the home of the Dallas Cowboys, AT&T Stadium. The victory for Longview ended 81 years of frustration that has seen celebration after celebration come through the city since that December day last year. Now, the focus is reset and a new season of Texas High School Football is upon us. Longview will open as the defending 6A Division II State Champions with a trip to their arch rival Lufkin’s home stadium, that has seen many, many frustration be handed to the Lobos in recent seasons. The Lobos visit Abe Martin Stadium in Lufkin for the 25th time, suffering losses in 10 of their previous 11 visits to the home of the Lufkin Panthers. Longview’s lone win at ole Abe in that span came in 2012, when Longview grabbed a stunning 45-14 victory over Lufkin. Lufkin comes into the 2019 football season after suffering another disappointing end to their football season. The Pack saw their 2018 season end at the hands of the Rangers from Frisco Lone Star, 49-21. The loss was one of just two for Lufkin last season, the only other loss being an opening week, come from behind victory by the Lobos, 35-28. The Lobos come into the 2019 football season having set every single school record imaginable in the 2018 season. Longview has won 16 consecutive games, dating back to their 2-point loss to Waco Midway in the 2017 6A Division II State Semi-Finals. The 16 wins in a row is tied for longest in school history. The 16-0 mark was a school record, among every single passing offensive records there is. Longview’s offense in 2019 will have to overcome losing Kamden Perry, who set every receiving record there is to set at Longview High School. And they’ll get a huge test right out of the gate with state ranked Lufkin, who has suffered three consecutive losses to the Lobos. Longview will be looking for their first four-game winning streak over the Panthers since they recorded five consecutive wins over Lufkin from 1989 to 1993. Since ending the 11-game losing streak to Lufkin in 2007, Longview has recorded a 11-4 over the Pack…including a 9-2 record in the previous 11 meetings. In those 11 meetings, the Lobos have won three playoff contests, two fo them by one point. Longview and Lufkin have met 82 times previously. Up until this previous run by the Lobos, the two schools were neck and neck in the overall series. But Longview’s recent dominance in victories has pushed the Lobos up to holding a four game series lead. Longview’s 41 victories over the Panthers sits 4th all-time in school history in wins over a single opponent, while Lufkin’s 37 victories over Longview sits third in school history in losses to a single opponent. The 82 meetings are the third most meetings in school history. The two programs first met in 1932, a decisive 34-0 Lufkin victory at Panther Stadium. Since that 1932 game, the two teams have not met on a football field just 12 years (1934, 1935, 1938, 1939, 1941, 1943, 1944, 1945, 1946, 1950, 1957 and 2005). Overall, the two programs have met 10 times in the post season, 20 times in non-district play and 52 times in district play. The Lufkin Panthers are one of just three teams in Longview’s history that the Lobos do not have a winning record in district contests again (the two teams are tied at 25 wins a piece and 2 ties). Longview also does not have a winning record against Gilmer (3-5-3) and Jefferson (1-1-1). The Lobos will open he 2019 football season as defending champions for the first time since 1938. Longview opened that 1938 season with a 20-6 victory over Dallas Woodrow Wilson. Their winning streak did not ended from the 1937 season (16 games) until three games into the 1938 season, a 13-13 tie against Port Arthur Thomas Jefferson. The Lobos also open the season having won eight consecutive non-district games dating back to their last visit to Abe Martin Stadium in 2016 (a 35-24 Panther victory). It will be a season of high expectations for both programs, one trying to keep their newly earned crown and another trying to reclaim old glory that has alluded them since they themselves won their crown. Longview didn’t let up and rolled to a 42-14 victory over the Mavs at Lobo Stadium, behind 243 rushing yards. The Lobos overcame a 6 fumble night in the victory, and held firm against Marshall’s vaunted passing attack that threw for 39 tries on the night. In 2013, Longview met Coppell at Allen Eagle Stadium in the Tom Laundry Classic that saw the Lobos take a 17-12 lead over the Cowboys into the 4th quarter. However, Coppell struck back in the 4th, following a Longview touchdown by Dorian Leonard to increase the lead to 24-12. The Cowboys punched over three touchdowns in the final frame, including their final touchdown with just six seconds left, to grab a 32-24 victory over the Lobos.

In their 82nd meeting overall, the Longview Lobos will do battle with the Lufkin Panthers in the opening game of the 2018 football season. The Lobos, coming off a 13-2 season and an appearance in the 6A Division II State Semi-Finals in 2017, will be looking to continue their recent magic against the Pack. Longview has won 5 of their previous 6 meetings against Lufkin, and 8 of their last 10. Those numbers include three playoffs victories, which culminated in last season’s State Quarterfinal match up that saw the Lobos come from behind in the final minute to erase a 32-26 deficit and walk away with a 33-32 victory over their rivals. The two squads will take a break from meeting in the post season the next two seasons with Lufkin dropping to Class 5A Division I while Longview remains in Class 6A. Returning for Longview is a host of offensive support all over the field. But the highlight will undoubtedly by Longview’s junior quarterback in Haynes King. King took over for the Lobos following their 52-34 loss to Mesquite Horn four games into the 2017 season as a sophomore. King never looked back after getting his first start the next week against Tyler Lee, finishing the season with 25 passing touchdowns which ended as the 2nd best passing touchdown mark in a season by a Longview quarterback. The Panthers also returned their quarterback in Kewone Thomas, but will face to find a way to replace all everything running back in Isaiah Phillips who finished with three touchdowns and 237 yards against the Lobos last November. Longview and Lufkin will be meeting for the 12th consecutive year, in which they will have played 17 games in those 12 years. The two schools have met twice in 2007, 2014, 2015 and 2017 in recent seasons. Overall, the two schools will be meeting for the 82nd time where Longview has gained a 40-37-4 overall record in the previous 81 games. The series dates back to 1932, where the Panthers ran away with a 34-0 victory in Panther Stadium. The series has mostly remained closed through it’s nearly 90 year history, with Longview’s 8 game lead being the largest margin. Longview’s largest victory in the series came in 1958, when the Lobos take advantage of four Lufkin turnovers in a 62-0 victory in Longview. Lufkin’s largest victory in the series came in 1954, when the Panthers ran for over 440 yards and intercepted 4 Longview passes to run to a 48-7 victory. Longview and Lufkin have met 10 times in the post season, the Lobos having won 6 of the 10 including the last three. Lufkin will enter Lobo Stadium on a six game losing streak in Longview. The Panthers last win in the city of Longview came in 2003, when the Pack shut out the Lobos 14-0 in game that saw nothing but rain, rain and more rain. Since then, the Lobos have picked up a 31-24 victory in 2007, a 24-10 victory in 2011, a 55-30 victory in 2013, a 21-20 victory in 2015 and a 35-16 win in last season’s season opener. Held to just 179 yards on the day, the Lobos saw Thomas Bachman of Evangel score three times on the night in a 27-7 defeat at Rodney Duron Stadium. In 2007, the Lobos started hot to kick off the 2007 season with a 13-0 lead in front of 9,000 at Abe Martin Stadium. Longview was looking to defeat Lufkin for the first time in 11 tries, but it wasn’t to be as the Panthers climbed back into the contest before taking their first lead of the game with 1:09 to play behind a Jaborski Smiley pass reception.

Right with the kickoff of the 108 season of Lobo football, a kickoff return for a touchdown started the 2017 season with a bang for the Longview Lobos. The win started off what would become their 39th victory against their long time rival, Lufkin. While the Lobo offense got off to a slow start, it was kick into gear mid way through the 2nd quarter when Carter would take over the helm. Despite a drive of over 7 minutes and 17 plays for Lufkin to start the second half, the Lobo offense would continue it's dominance with Carter at the QB spot until midway through the 4th when the Lobos coughed up their only fumble on the night. By then, the Lobos had established a 28-10 lead and looked well onto the way to their first victory of the year. The Lobos, starting the season with a win for just the second time since 2012, now look towards another long time rival. From #80 against Lufkin, to #107 against Marshall. The rematch following Marshall's 2015 upset of Longview (28-25) proved to be no match up last season, as the Lobos marched all over the Mavericks in a 56-7 victory. The win marked the largest victory against Marshall in the series history for the Lobos. The win marked Longview's 15th win over the Mavs in the last 16 seasons. Tonight, the Lobos will look to win their 60th overall game against the Mavericks which would be the first time in Longview history that Lobos have recorded at least 60 wins against a single opponent. Marshall, with a fresh new coaching staff following Harper's move to Duncanville, started the season off with a 29-27 loss against Chance Amie and the Robert E Lee Rebels. Claude Mathis takes over for the Mavs in their first road game under his helm but Mathis is definitely no stranger to Longview football after two seasons being district mates when he was the head coach at DeSoto. Both contests went Longview's way as the Lobos upset the Eagles in 2010, 38-35, and held on for a strong defensive victory in 2011, 23-21. This year's edition marks Marshall's 20th visit all-time to Longview's Lobo Stadium (the new stadium). Since their shocking double overtime victory over the Lobos in 1998, 35-28, Marshall has not beaten the Lobos at the stadium running a record of 7 consecutive defeats. The Lobo defense held the Broncos to just 57 total yards on the night. In 1967, Ralph Blount’s field goal and Rodney Hill’s 2nd quarter touchdown reception was all Longview needed to a 10-7 victory over Woodrow Wilson. In 1972, Mick Mock tallied the only touchdown the Lobos needed but Calvin Portley, Chuck Boyd and Charles Robey added the insurance markers in a 27-0 Lobo win over Dallas Jesuit. In 1978, five different Lobos scored for the Lobos, highlighted by a 78 yard interception return by Ed Jackson, as the Lobos knocked off Dallas Thomas Jefferson 34-0 at Cobb Stadium. In 1989, the Lobos fell behind 12-0 at Mesquite Memorial Stadium against North Mesquite before a huge 4th quarter comeback spurred by two Selwyn Broughton touchdowns in a 15-12 shocker over the Stallions. In 1995, after a scoreless first half, the Lobos marched out to a 10-0 lead behind Isiah Stoker’s 3rd quarter marker before holding on to knock off the Waco Lions for the 7th straight time, 17-7. In 2000, fresh off their 2nd straight State Championship, Cedric Benson notched four touchdowns as the Midland Lee Rebels opened the season with a 40-7 win over Longview at Memorial Stadium in Midland. In 2006, the Lobos grabbed a 38-21 lead before a late 4th quarter comeback by the Mavericks pushed the game to the brink with a last second hail mary falling just short. Jazmon Moon tallied four touchdowns in the 38-35 victory over Marshall.
