It has been 12 long years since Longview walked out of Lobo Stadium with a victory against John Tyler, but the Lobos on Friday night cruised to a 41-13 victory to end John Tyler’s 3-game winning streak over the Lobos at their home stadium, and end John Tyler’s 5-game overall winning streak inside Lobo Stadium. With the win, Longview improved 3-0 on the season. That marks the first time since 2004/2005 that Longview has had back to back 3-0 starts to a season, following Longview’s 3-0 start to the 2017 season. It’s just the fifth time in 15 seasons under head coach John King that Longview has started 3-0. The other time being in 2009. The win also marked Longview’s 50th overall win against John Tyler. It’s the 2nd program that Longview has at least 50 victories against, the other being Marshall with 61 victories now. Now the Lobos turn their attention to a state that after constantly filled Longview’s non-district schedule for the better part of a decade and a half, has only been on Longview’s schedule once this decade. Longview heads to Louisiana for the first time since 2015, and travels to Ruston for the first time in 16 seasons. The Lobos and Bearcats haven’t met in 16 seasons, but they’re definitely no strangers to each other. Longview’s old offensive coordinator from the beginning of John King’s era calls on the Lobos this week as second year head coach, Jerrod Baugh, takes helm against his former head coach. It’ll be the first time for John King to face a former assistant coach as a head coach. Longview and Ruston have met 10 times previously, with the Lobos winning the last two in 2001 and 2002. The Lobos opened the series in 1992, with a 23-12 victory at Ruston. Ruston then won the next two meetings, in 1993 and 1994. In 1993, the #10 Bearcats were able to make a goal line stand against Longview to win 14-9. In 1994, the #1 ranked Bearcats took advantage of a missed extra point to win 14-13. The Lobos then won the next three. Ruston’s only win by more than a touchdown came in 1999 when they hung 51 points on the helpless Lobos. It was the first time in 47 years that Longview had given up 50 points or more. Excluding that 51-18 victory, the other three Ruston victories have come by a total of 12 points. The visit to Ruston will mark just the 2nd time since 2010 that Longview ventures to Louisiana for a non-district game, and 3rd time overall since 2010 (playoff game in Shreveport in 2010). The Lobos are looking to improve to 4-0 for the first time since finishing 10-0 in 2005. WEEK FOUR 11-6A SCHEDULE: Longview at Ruston (James Field) Mesquite vs Hurst L.D. Bell (E.H. In 2001, Tate Casey would pass in a 23 yard pass reception in the first quarter and Willie Andrews would rush in for two touchdowns as Longview rolled over Ruston, 35-7, at Lobo Stadium.
