CoonWrangler
Does anyone else around here do any trapping? If so feel free to share any tips you may have. Caught this bobcat last March and just added a gray fox to my list of animals caught in live traps. Will post fox pics soon.
CoonWrangler
Many will tell you that it is near impossible to catch a fox in a live trap, but I am here to tell you that with a little work concealing your trap and some cracklins, you can. I caught this on the night before Thanksgiving. In my opinion live trapping beats steel trapping anyday, unless you are trying to rake in cash on hides which to my knowledge in East Texas there isn't really much of a market for anymore. Please post any pics or stories you may have on Trapping. For those who say you cant catch a fox in a live trap here he is.

CoonWrangler
I know I seen it remember...was very mean.... Skinned her out today. All i need now is to find a taxidermist that will tan it pretty cheap. I can do it myself but would rather let a pro handle it.
GINGERGENOCIDE
Iv been trappin all my life and we dont use live traps we. use snairs to catch coyotes, bobcats, and foxes. We make our own so we can put choke stoppers on them to catch stuff alive.

We make our own so we can put choke stoppers on them to catch stuff alive. I use steel traps every now and then, but i prefer using live traps because it gives you the option to let whatever you catch go. I haven't ever had much luck with snares. GINGERGENOCIDE
We have pretty good luck with snares, the ones we catch are all in fences and its easy if you know where to put them. We had a bobcat that was killin some of our turkeys on a place we hunt and I don't know if you've heard of the log cabin style but anyways we put a bunch of them up and it took forever to catch that bobcat and that was the only time that we had bad luck with snares. CoonWrangler
You're right I dont know what log cabin style is. Judging by the fact that you hunt in an area with turkeys you must not be from the same part of East Texas i'm from.
Medman7
We trapped for years and years but quit when the price of hides dropped. I remember getting $150 for a large bobcat hide when they were selling good. We used to make a lot of money in the winter on hides. Great way to pay for Christmas for sure. Here is what we used to get when they were paying good: (Of course it all depended n their size and quality of the fur) Bobcats: $75-150 Coons: $10-40 Coyotes: $10 Foxes: $15-35 Possums: $5 (Not usually worth the difficulty skinning) Mink: $15 Always used steel traps with a drag line! It always served us well!
bloodrningblue
I can remember in the early to mid 80's being able to make between a $1000.00 and $2000.00 during break from school. I always used steel traps. The ones with drags seemed to hold better.
CoonWrangler
I have been looking for a fur buyer in my area but haven't found one yet. I don't guess there is any kind of market for them around here. Maybe in other parts where it gets real cold. Does anyone know of someone who buys hides. That was a great year. It was just two years later that the fur activist up in NY got stired up and caused the prices tobottom out. That still make me mad! Now you see thousands of dollars worth of hides wasting on the road side from getting ran over! Populations went through the roof because most people stopped trapping! Maybe this will help. GINGERGENOCIDE
No turkeys where you are, well that stinks. Yeah anyway don't know if you care or not but all the log cabin style is is you take some pretty good size sticks and build them up to look ilke a cabin Or a box but leave a hole in the front and put some sort of bait in the cabin. Then hang a snare in the hole or put a steal trap in front of it. We have a group of a little over 40 turkeys that stays to gether so we always have varmits after them. I forgot on that log cabin if you use snares build it in front of a tree so you can tie the snare to it.
