Mark 16:16, "He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned."

You are adding to what is written that which you WANT to be there.

~~~Hmmm! I wonder what that makes old Colmes????~~~
I am making a logical inference from the previous statement, which is the 3rd step in finding scriptural authority...I am using the context of the entire Bible in conjunction to the scripture being discussed and commenting on the Bible using the Bible as evidence....this is the only real way that we can gain the Truth from God's Word, and it is why He allowed it to be brought down through the ages in its simple form.......
Keeping things in context....Abraham was called to leave his homeland in Genesis chapter 12. He obeyed and did it. Circumcision, and God's covenant with Abraham was not brought into effect until Genesis chapter 17, MUCH later in Abraham's life. A command that he obeyed.....Abraham's continued obedience to God during his lifetime is what allowed him to be declared righteous.......Abraham obeyed God all the days of his life as we can clearly see in the Scriptures....
Rom. 4:1-5, "What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found? 2For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. 3For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” 4Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due. 5But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness."
Gal. 3:5-7, "Does He then, who provides you with the Spirit and works miracles among you, do it by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? 6Even so Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness. 7Therefore, be sure that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham."
I Peter 3: 13 - 17:
13Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? 14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, 15but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, 16 having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. 17For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God’s will, than for doing evil.
Great passage. It has nothing to do with you, however.
How Noah Was Saved
I Peter 3: 18 - 22
18For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, 19in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, 20because they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. 21Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.
In the passage above, Peter draws on the account of Noah's salvation to illustrate to us today how lost souls are saved. Many people object to this straightforward reading of I Peter 3: 21 because it stands in stark contrast to what they have accepted. To many people, baptism is simply a ritual without much meaning. While they agree that it represents something, that is as far as they will go. It has no meaning to each one of them as individuals. Thus, it becomes in their eyes an optional act. It has no purpose according to them. They believe that it causes no change. But let's take Peter's comparison and see the parallels between the saving of Noah and the saving of a lost soul.
WHAT ARE WE BEING SAVED FROM?
The answer to that question seems pretty straightforward. It should be obvious, but at the very foundation of the controversy, people just don't understand salvation. Noah's world was given over entirely to sin.
Genesis 6: 4 - 7:
4The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown.
5 The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6And the LORD was sorry that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. 7So the LORD said, "I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them."
It wasn't just some of the people sinning or most of the people sinning. The entire world was consumed with sin. There were only EIGHT souls in the entire world who were living righteously.
While our world has not reached the point of wickedness found in Noah's day, the fact still remains that sin is widespread.
Romans 3: 9 - 18
9What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, 10as it is written:
"None is righteous, no, not one;
11no one understands;
no one seeks for God.
12All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;
no one does good,
not even one."
13 "Their throat is an open grave;
they use their tongues to deceive."
"The venom of asps is under their lips."
14 "Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness."
15 "Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16in their paths are ruin and misery,
17and the way of peace they have not known."
18 "There is no fear of God before their eyes."
So what is it that we need to be saved or rescued from? Sin
Isaiah 59: 1 - 2
1Behold, the LORD’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save,
or his ear dull, that it cannot hear;
2 but your iniquities have made a separation
between you and your God,
and your sins have hidden his face from you
so that he does not hear.
God hates sin so much that sin separates us from fellowship with Him. We ae in need of something to bring us back into fellowship with Him. We are all in need of salvation from our sins.
HOW IS SALVATION BROUGHT ABOUT?
NOAH WAS SAVED BY GRACE.
Genesis 6: 8
8But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.
Grace means receiving favor or mercy. It means gaining a gift that was not earned or owed. God could have justly wiped out the entire world, including Noah and his family. Noah, however, received a gift from God that wasn't earned on Noah's part and wasn't owed to Noah.
WE ARE SAVED BY GRACE
Ephesians 2: 1 - 7
1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. 4But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ— by grace you have been saved— 6and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
But will grace alone save us? Did grace alone save Noah? The answer to these questions is no, because we can also see that NOAH WAS SAVED BY FAITH.
Hebrews 11: 7
7By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.
God's free gift of grace would have been wasted on Noah, if Noah had not believed God's warning. God didn't force Noah to be saved. He offered Noah a way to be saved, that required Noah to believe Him. The fact that Noah believed God did not in any way lessen the value of the gift that God had offered to him. We can not be saved without faith.
Hebrews 11: 6
6And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
We are saved by grace through the means of faith.
Ephesians 2: 8
8For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
There are some who claim we are, "Saved by grace only, through faith only". That sentence is one big contradiction, since if we were saved by grace only, faith would not be required, and if we were saved by faith only, then grace would not be required. Whenever someone answers you with that statment, be sure to show them the contradiction that is contained within it.
So are grace and faith enough to save us? Were they enough to save Noah? Once again we must say that the answer is no, because we can also see that NOAH WAS SAVED BY WORKS.
Hebrews 11: 7
7By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.
All the faith in the world would not have saved Noah if that faith had not moved him to DO as God had directed him to do. The building of the Ark was Noah's salvation. Noah was obedient to God. Noah DID exactly what God told him to do.
Genesis 6: 22
22 Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him.
Our salvation also requires action on our part.
Matthew 7: 21
21 "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
Jesus saves those who obey.
Hebrews 5: 8 - 9
8Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. 9And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him,
Faith can not be separated from action.
James 2: 14 - 26
14What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and filled," without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? 17So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
18But someone will say, "You have faith and I have works." Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. 19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder! 20Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? 22You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works; 23and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness"—and he was called a friend of God. 24You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. 25And in the same way was not also Rahab the prostitute justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? 26For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.
At what point did Abraham show total, absolute devotion to God? When Abraham, through his actions, showed the depth of his faith.
NOAH WAS SAVED BY WATER
I Peter 3: 20
20because they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water.
At first, this seems strange to us. It was water that destroyed the world. But, if we think in that way, then we have lost track of the goal. Noah was being saved from a world of sin. The water was God's means of destroying the sin. Peter tells us that we are saved in the same manner.
I Peter 3: 21
21Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
Peter makes sure that we understand that this is not a physical, outward cleansing that brings salvation. It is the obedient heart responding to the call of God. The water isn't the salvation, but the means God uses to bring about our salvation.
Romans 6: 3 - 7
3Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
5For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7For one who has died has been set free from sin.
Notice that through baptism, Paul says that sin dies in a man, leaving him a new creature. Is it the water alone that does this? NO, the water is just the medium that God has chosen to use for His Plan. Just as water washed away the evil from the world in Noah's day, leaving a new world for him and his family, BAPTISM washes away our sins.
Acts 22: 16
16And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on his name.'
Baptism is the putting off of sin. It is our old man of sin being buried. We don't bury people who are still alive, and we don't bury those who have already been saved in baptism. Paul clearly shows that one is not saved until the old man of sin is buried in baptism and the new man rises up from the water, having been washed in the Blood of Jesus Christ. The salvation is done by God through our faith in His Word when we obey Him.
Colossians 2: 11 - 13
11In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. 13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses,
SO HOW ARE WE SAVED?
We are saved in much the same way that Noah was saved. Noah wasn't warned of the impending doom and then allowed to create his own method of salvation for himself and his family. He was given the method of his salvation by God. He responded in faith by DOING what God directed him to do. As a consequence, he and his family were saved.
We are warned of impending doom as well.
II Peter 3: 9 - 14
9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. 11Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! 13But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. 14 Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace.
We were given by God--NOT MAN--the means by which we can be saved. Our only choice, if we want to be saved, is to do completely the things that God has directed. The only way that we can hope to be saved is to do it the way God showed us and the way He planned from before Creation. Only in complete obedience to God can we be saved.
HOW WILL YOU BE SAVED?
Is listening to men who claim that only partial obedience to God's plan is good enough going to save us? What if Noah had only partially did what God said in building the Ark?
Can we be saved by saying a simple prayer, instead of doing as God commanded? Would Noah had been saved if he had simply prayed, instead of building the Ark as God commanded?
Can you be saved by heeding the teachings of creeds, confessions of faith, or traditions of men? Or MUST you be saved by obeying the commandments of God, like Noah did?
HOW HAS GOD SHOWN US THAT WE CAN OBTAIN SALVATION?
When we hear the Gospel message that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God. That He died on the cross for our sins and was raised on the third day, we are to believe that message, and confess that belief publicly.
We are to repent of our past sins.
We are to be baptized to have those past sins washed away.
Mark 16: 15 - 16
Acts 2: 37 - 38
Acts 22: 16
We are then to live faithful lives as long as we are alive.
Revelation 2: 10
Not one person on this earth has ever been saved by faith only. Noah wasn't, and neither will anyone else. Salvation is accomplished through the grace of God when our faith lead us to bow in submission to His Will and to DO what He said we must do to gain it.
Are you in need of the gift of God's Grace? Are you in need of salvation? Have you followed God's method to gain salvation, or have you erroneously followed one of the man-made methods? If you read this today and are in need of God's Grace, if you need to submit to God's command and be baptized for the remission of your sins, making your public confession and repenting of your sins, please take action immediately....
What do you mean by scriptural authority? That we become above or superior to the scriptures?
If you were using the whole Bible in context you would see that baptism does not save us from our sins.
We must have authority FROM the scriptures to teach anything that we teach....that makes us inferior to them....
Plesase see the sermon from a couple of years ago that I posted above and see how the example of baptism was shown to us through Noah's salvation......
I personally view baptism as an act to show your faith in God. I do not however feel it is necessary for salvation or to reach Heaven. It is an act of man, and the act of salvation is between an individual and the Lord. I also do not believe in man giving me a "logical inference" to make his point true when refering to the Bible scriptures. What makes his "logical inference" correct when many do not agree with the inference. Maybe if a person spent most of their life studying the scriptures as related to the language, dialect and cultures of the times of the Bible, I might could hear a "logical inference."
Last - Colmesneilfan1, with all due respect, I think you should change the "nickname" under your screen name and picture. Obviously many members disagree with some of your scriptorial beliefs. I don't think it is right or fair to have the name "SmoakHouse Chaplain" with so many disagreeing. The nickname was probably given to you by some one else, yet I think you should man up and have it removed or changed. This is not questioning your beliefs, but I for one spent a lot of free time on this website, and I do not consider you my chaplain or advisor of Biblical scripture. That is not a jab at you; we just have different opinions. I'm sure I'm reading the Bible out of context in your opinion, but that's just it - that's YOUR opinion. Be careful of who you condemn because in the end when you meet your maker, you might just have some explaining to do. I'll be waiting on the Biblical scripture from you that says I'm casting evil spirits or something thereof...
If I had the inclination I would tear your whole sermon apart, but I have to go listen to PHC soon let me just hit two obvious points (faults).
A) NOWHERE does it say in scripture there were eight souls who were living righteously - nowhere.
~~~ Oh I forgot that Colmes has special revelation, i.e., logical inference.~~~~

B) Noah was not saved by the water, he was saved by the boat, To get into the ark he - and the animals - had to pass through the door! Duh!

~~~Hmmm! Door? As in Jesus is the "door"~~~
Baptism is a picture of the death,burial and resurection of Jesus Christ...death, means dead to sin(soul). When we go under the water it signifies the burial of Christ and when we emerge it signifies the resurection of Christ......it is a picture of what Christ has done for us....not a step for salvation............are you on the ropes yet colmes?....lol
I grew up in the Church of Christ, so I know that Colmes will not ever give up.
With that being said though as I've gotten older I wonder whose religion is right. Is there any one religion that is the all "gonna send your butt to heaven" religion?
Muslims, Buddhist, Christians, Jews. Who is right? If you've never been exposed to the correct religion how can you go to hell for not believing in the right religion?
Galatians 1:8-9 (King James Version)
8But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.
------
Agree or disagree these people have or have not preached another gospel.
Those that preach a (black) liberation theology like at Chicago's Trinity United Church Of Christ (0bamas church in chitown)
Westboro Baptist church- founder Fred Phelps dude
Muslims- Believe that there was a Jesus but believe Mohammand was the last prophet becuase of a special revelation given to him by an angel
Mormans-Believe that Jo Smith was the final prophet and he too was given special revelation by an angel.
JW- It denies the deity of Christ, His physical resurrection, and salvation by grace. This alone makes it non-Christian. To support its erring doctrines, the Watchtower organization (which is the author and teacher of all official Jehovah's Witness theology), has even altered the Bible to make it agree with its changing and non-Christian teachings
The "social gospel" that is preached by a lot of socialist/communist that play on peoples emotion to help others by taking from others.
Has anybody ever heard of this guy? .....Eric vonAnderseck because he is a self proclaimed apostle of God who says he is commissioned by God to reveal the "true and restored" gospel to the North American continent. .....
Muslims accept Jesus Christ as a prophet and a Messiah, but not as the literal Son of God. They do believe that He will come at the Second Coming to fight the Anti-Christ.
Mormons have had other prophets, and still do to this day. Joe Smith wasn't their last prophet, and they don't believe that he is divine. The do not think of him as an average Joe, as many of us do not consider the Prophets and Apostles as average. Many thought the Mormon religion would fail when Joe Smith died, but as we all know that's why there is a BYU.
The Jehovah's Witness do believe that Jesus Christ did suffer for our sins, but they do not believe that Jesus Christ is the Only Begotten Son of God.
I've never heard of the last guy, until you brought him up. I heard Benny Hinn is going through a divorce. Then again, I don't pay much attention to televangelists.
The sciptures were chosen by the church..they decided what should be in or not
If you are questioning the reliabilty of scripture let not your heart be troubled for it has been preserved with the kind of accuracy that points to scritpure truely being The Word of God.
here is an exceret from http://www.apologeticspress.org/articles/66
Amazingly, he had stumbled across what is known today as the Dead Sea scrolls. Inside the cave were hundreds of scrolls, most likely written by a group of people known as the Essenes.
Among the important discoveries from the caves were copies of several books of the Old Testament. These copies were produced from about 200 B.C. to A.D. 100, making them almost 900 years older than the oldest available copies of Old Testament books. Keep in mind, the Dead Sea scrolls were found in 1948, and the King James Bible was translated into English in 1611. One scroll found in the Dead Sea caves was of particular importance. It was a scroll of the book of Isaiah—from which only a few words were missing! What was amazing about this scroll was that, when it was compared to the text of Isaiah produced 900 years after it, the two matched almost word for word! Thus, we can be confident that the Old Testament we hold in our hands today is worded exactly as the original writers wrote it.
Mark 16:16, "He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned."
I could easily say that he who believes and goes to church will be saved. That is true. But it is belief that saves, not belief and going to church. Likewise, if you believe and read your Bible you'll be saved, but it isn't reading your Bible that saves you.
Likewise, those who believe and are baptized will be saved. But the emphasis is on faith, not on baptism. Notice that Mark 16:16 says that he who does not believe will be condemned. It does not say that he who is not baptized will not be condemned. If baptism is necessary for salvation, then we should find somewhere in Scripture where it says something to the effect of if you're not baptized, you're not saved; but we find no such statement.
I agree with this, because baptism is an outward showing that we are followers and members of His church. A person can be baptized into a church, but not believe in it's doctrines. He can even profess to the world by his tongue that he believes in Jesus Christ, but in his heart he is not saved. Matthew 7 points this. People will be known by their fruits. If we don't keep the commandments of God, and don't repent no one can be saved, because they didn't accept His blood for their forgiveness or seek forgiveness. Repentence isn't the easiest thing for humanity. You have to humble yourself before Him. You have to offer a broken heart and a contrite spirit.
I could go around saying all day long, I'm saved and I believe in Jesus Christ. If I sin, even after being born again and don't repent. All that lip service was for nothing. That's what Matthew 7, tells me.
