Mavgrad98
Theres also a story on the Rangers website, but I found this one a little more telling. Does anyone expect that a deal wont be reached? http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=jp-passan_darvish_rangers_contract_five_six_years_011412

Stoney
That the they are finally talking to Fielder means one of two things. They are signing Darvish and Fielder No Darvish but get Fielder Either one is a win/win for the Rangers. Oswalt would be a nice consolation prize for not getting Darvish. topher805
I have also heard that if the Rangers sign Fielder, that could be the writing on the wall for Josh Hamilton...With Hamilton being injury prone, and not getting any younger, the Rangers could be looking to add a more consistent bat to the lineup in Fielder. Remember that Hamilton, while his comeback story is great, he did lose a lot of time on the field, and I'm guessing some of his extracurricular's took some time off his career. Stoney
If signing Fielder means letting Hamilton go Id be okay with that. Younger, more durable, same or plus production. To be honest I dont know that I would re-sign Nellie Cruz either. Big contracts for injury prone guys on the wrong side of thirty could really "hamstring" us. Like the word play there...lol...The Rangers have the advantage of a strong farm system to help out by giving good players at a cheap price. At least with Fielder, he doesn't have to really run anywhere defensively, and on offense, all you really hope for is a home run trot around the bases. Stoney
6 years/$ 60 million? Thats not as bad as I'd of figured. Still $60 million for an unproven, in the MLB, commodity. Hope he's an ace. If not, at the worst another Colby Lewis. Now our attention turns to PRince fielder.
cheaptrick77
BELIEVE ME - I understand the “never played in MLB” skepticism - this is indeed a risk, but NO Japanese import has EVER posted the numbers that Darvish has. It’s not like he was facing a little league team every start. It would be nice, but he doesn’t even have to maintain his lifetime 1.99 (!) ERA to be successful in the Majors. Check out his yearly ERA compared to the league average:

Ratface
I'm excited about Darvish being with The Good Guys now, but I just hope he can adjust to starting every five days, rather than just once a week. I think he's going to be a good one, and maybe better than just good.

stevosev7
Not use to starting every five days is Big in my book- but how will the Texas heat play into that five days also? The heat is no problem...This guy is from the smog/humidity capital of the world... Plus, if you're concerned about his stamina, go back and look at those numbers...50 complete games over the last 5 seasons. Roy Halladay has 66 for his entire career!!! I'm more concerned about the fact that we play with a slightly bigger ball than what they play with in Japan. But if a guy like Colby Lewis can make the transition, then I'm stoked to see what this guy does.
THSfanatic
It's a roll of the dice gamble...but a gamble with better odds than you normally have. Definitely worth the risk if you can afford it. And evidently money is no object
junglejim
Just shows again how far we have come as an organization. Management diligently studies players and situations (watching practically every game he pitched last year and having watched a lot before that, getting to know his family, ect), they form a plan and execute the plan. They are ready when an opportunity presents itself (Cliff Lee, Francisco for Napoli, ect), but are thinking long term success, not making a move that will cripple the team for years. Not every move will pan out, and Yu may not ever be what we are hoping for, but I have confidence in JD and our staff to make the moves with the best risk/reward potential. It hasn't been that long ago that you didn't have that confidence in this team. The bar has been raised and will not be lowered under this management / owner's group. junglejim
Be careful. Many teams have climbed the mountain only to fall off the other side. Never say never Don't misunderstand me, I know fully well any team, including the Rangers, can fail and have a miserable season or two. What I am saying is the bar (of expectation) has been raised, and this ownership / management team will not lower it or quit moving forward. In the past success was a surprise, not the expectation. He has thrown a lot of innings and a lot of pitches, I hope his shoulder and elbow hold up well over the course of his contract. Regardless I hope this move works out well for the Rangers. As long as my Astros are stinking it up, at least someone is representing the lone star state well...

The Rangers had to make a splash and in my estimation they(Ryan and Daniels) have done everything we as fans have asked for.
