The State Champion in 3A would not beat the state champion in 4A. Congrats on your season, but start making your way back to Earth please.

Generally speaking, you are correct, but I have seen times where the 3A champion would've, or could've beaten the 4A champion. I doubt any 3A team of late would've done it with the likes of a Lake Travis out there though. Of course, we'll never know for sure. The 4A champion is "supposed" to be able to beat the 3A champion, right?

That was a long time ago, however. It was in the pre-Traylor era the last time Gilmer was in a district with Kilgore('96-'97).

Honestly, I think this district is up for grabs. The team that fills the holes left by graduation the quickest, and gels the quickest, will be the frontrunner to win the district. I'm not one of those that believes that a team that runs 80 to 90% of the time can't win the district. They will, however, have to complete some play action passes to keep defenses honest. With the right QB that can happen. The team that plays the best defense, and makes the fewest mistakes on offense will win this district. Right now that is hard to say who it will be. I can guarantee it will be exciting to find out who the best team is in this district. There will be a game (or two) of the week every week in this district.

I agree with most of what you're saying .. You don't have to have a great passing game if the opposing defense can't stop your run game. Kilgore has historically been successful doing this.. they have been able to run at will, with or without a "great QB". Sure they've had a few down years..But, the 03'-06' era for the dogs they didn't have an exceptional QB. However they won state in 04' and very possibly could've won state 03-06'. Classic Kilgore football is just like jr88 said.. Run the ball down your throat, make the db's cheat up then throw a 75yd bomb for a TD because your db's were all up in the box.. Kilgore has never had a great passing game. Mostly because they make the run game the main priority. If you can't stop the run, you can't stop the clock which usually results in a "W" if you have a decent defense. Control the clock and let your opponent bleed a slow death. This will be an interesting season, looks like Gilmer, Kilgore, & chapel hill lost a lot to graduation. Kilgore's JV was successful & the varsity does return some talent. I'm most interested to see if Gilmer can truly reload this year.. Or will this be the beginning of a few "down" years..

4 the most part Bullard returns 11 on D and 9 on O and we didn't have a JV team. But our freshman team played mostly JV teams and only lost 1 game. For the last 5 games we started a freshman at OLB (14 year old) and he did a great job. Over half the team will be 3 year starters and our all district kicker will be back too. All district QB, 2 time 2nd team all district RB and a slew of smoaky nominated juniors under what I consider to be a great coaching staff. " Maybe" we can compete in this district. Thank you to all of those who pulled for us last year

Yeah, I remember those teams under Vallery, and you described them to a T. About the last two sentences.....Gilmer WILL reload, I'll guarantee you that. As long as we have Jeff Traylor, Matt Turner, and Kurt Traylor our offense will produce. History proves that. A "down" year for us would be better than most teams' best years.

By the way, the Buckeyes have loads of talent coming up. The JV was 9-1 last year, but some of their best players were brought up to varsity because of depth. This past senior class was the smallest class (in numbers) to come through since Traylor became coach.

I guess you haven't been to too many Lions/kilgore games. There has been some tough games and some blowouts. Either way each team LOVES a win over each other. Don't kid yourself both teams start in 8th grade wanting to beat other. I agree kilgore has dominated the series. By the way you can;t desperately need a win if you won 3 straight. Kilgore logic gotta love it.

Believe me I know about the rivalry. We lost to Henderson one time, my freshman year. By the way my perceived "Kilgore logic" is actually just a lack of you reading for comprehension. At the time Henderson got a win in this string of three they desperately needed it to remind ppl there was in fact a rivalry.

Never said that they could beat the a 4a champion. But kilgore was no champion last season. I think ch and gilmer would have beat kilgore last year. Henderson already did

Oh yes gilmer and chapel hill would had an easy win like henderson did. You see now you know what I am talking about with those kilgore folks. They had one good year and there back lol. Henderson has had two very sucessful years and are in the same boat as kilgore. I don't see how they think there better than anyone lol.

Henderson had two winning seasons and look out they're the new Hoover.

Let me remind everybody how much the Texas high school football landscape has changed in the last 7-8 years. The teams are put together differently now. Coaching is across the board better now than it was a decade ago. I think you have more teams that are competitive thru the season now than then. If you consider a district like 16 with its recent history, then all the more so. This as a 7 team district for now, pending a protest outcome, and at least 6 teams will be competitive on a weekly basis. There are variables like injuries, weather, turnovers, and such that will all play a part in these contests each week. Nothing wrong with homerism, but keeping things on an even keel and giving credit to your opponents is always good advice.

I heard the UIL didn't think District 16 was strong enough so they are considering moving Argyle into our district. Wouldn't that be a hoot? There's not any teams protesting the UIL in this district. I would've thought Bullard would've had a legitimate gripe, but the UIL would've denied them just like they did everybody else besides the one school they did approve.

By the way, it's good advice to always respect your opponents. This district is a doozy, and not for the faint of heart. You never know how the variables you spoke of will affect your team. Last year Gilmer lost their starting QB late in game 7. He was also our punter and kickoff artist.......but I think the Buckeyes still had a great season.

24 wins in two years says your good go figure you wouldn't get that talk about clueless.

24 wins in 2 years is a great run. Not quite as good as Kilgore's 39-4 record from '03-'05, but still very good.

BTW, those 24 wins in the last 2 years has raised Coach Meeks winning % at Henderson after 6 years to 50.7% (35 W - 34 L). Not bad, even though 2/3 of his wins came after the move to 3A.

That got me to wondering how well Coach Val did in his time here in Kilgore. Turns out he didn't do to bad either..... 133 W - 47 L (73.8%). All the while being the low man on the totem pole in 4A.

If I was Kilgore, I would worry about not getting embarrassed in this district, Kilgore got handled by Henderson last year, not to mention what happened to them in Gilmer in 2009, 70 pts, yuke, that's like getting KO'd 3 seconds into a fight, and they just stepped into a district with 3 teams that can score 50pts before Rick Perry can say hello,,,,,woh! step Down into 3A and not make the playoffs,,,talk about a welcome to 3A,,with a pink slip to boot!...could get stinky in oil town LOL.....

Kilgore was the worst its been in a LONG LONG time in 09. Although they still played well enough in district to make playoffs. Last year end of season vs last year non district were 2 different teams. I would put money on Kilgore beating Henderson if the game were played somewhere between week 7 and deep playoffs last year. I think Kilgore was playing well enough at the end of the season to have maybe brought home a state title in 3a. Their games against JT and Whitehouse are the evidence, along with the deep playoff run. I'm not a Kilgore supporter either.

I would have liked to have seen them play CH late in the year. Would have been a good one that could have went either way. I won't make the same non district comparisons on CH as others are of Kilgore. If that were the case then you could look at the Whitehouse vs CH game and compare that to the Whitehouse vs Kilgore game. Kilgore would be heavy favorites looking at the scores.

I'm interested to see what the "city" of Gilmer is going to do when their football team misses the playoffs 2 years in a row. I can envision riots in the streets, and a mass exodus of sweet potato farmers and such.

Not going to happen y friend. I promise. If anyone is left outside looking in it will be kilgore. Watching ch gilmer and henderson make another playoff run

I promise kilgore wanted no part of the hill the last 2 years.
