We won't be going there again till the water level comes back up. Went a couple of weekends ago, and lots of folks said they'd dropped the water level 3 feet in one day for Caddo... bad enough the City of Longview is draining it.

Went this past weekend, and there's stumps where you tube and ski...

Unfortunately, we'd finally found the "sweet spots" and were TEARING 'EM UP!!!!!! LOL!

So going to Fork this weekend... hopefully their water level is better! Haven't mastered Fork yet, but gonna...

^ Talked to some relatives that actually live in Ore City... said it's been happening for many, MANY years at Lake of the Pines.

However, I have to say....cooked some of ours last night, especially the big catfish I got - had to cut him in half though to get him in the pan... LOL....and OMG, I thought I was at David Beard's eating whole fish!

Hubby says, OMG, I've created a monster...

FISH ON!

Course the story goes like this on the boat...I've always been a water kid, and have always wanted a boat. Oldest son and I have been talking about getting a boat for YEARS!

So oh, around June-ish or so, hubby says oh, hey, they're having a boat show at Maude Cobb, let's go. I said, are you insane, you can't let me go to a boat show, you know what will happen.... Nahhhh, he says, we're not buying a boat.....

Uh-huh....So I pick out my boat... they tell me the price, I told 'em they've lost their ever living mind - that's as much as I paid for my truck... okay, it's an '03, but that's not the point.

I picked out a Tahoe Ski and Fish (inboard)...so I went on the hunt...I learned everything there is to know about what boats are best, for what, etc., etc. and what the prices are....found one in Gainesville, TX... Told hubby we were going to look at it...he gave me this look, and I told him, you can either load up, or I'll do it myself...he knows that...

Brought it home. Hubby wants to take us on a tour of Lake of the Pines - he puts us in at the first bridge at 154... needless to say we didn't go very far, as we bottomed out, with me hollering at the top of my lungs that he's gonna ruin my NEW BOAT - not new, but that's not the point.

We had a blast with it this summer taking the boys out. Then it started getting a bit chilly, the boys were tired of "Dad trying to kill 'em tubing." So we started fishing......

Yep...it's freaking cool!!!!!!!

Only problem is, I got an inboard....I didn't know I'd like fishing this much, but I'm on the water - that's all that matters. Well, I pushed it and pushed it, and Monday a week ago, before it froze 2 nights in a row, I had to let 'em winterize it....needless to say, I'm on the hunt for a "bass boat" (for winter)... but shhhhhh, don't tell anybody! LOL!

I think the cities of Longview and Marshall should send their wastewater to their own plants instead of dumping their poopie in Lake O the Pines I want my lake clean and also my fish that I catch and eat to be clean too. Caddo citizens defeated an attempt by Marshall to lower lake levels at Caddo a few years ago. Marshall has enough water from the numerous creeks that flow past their city they don't need caddo water and Longview has plenty of water also someone mentioned David Beards catfish king restaurant earlier. wow they don't make em any better than what he cooked too bad he passed away recently I know his recipe for hushpuppies but out of respect I ain't tellin

Officials ponder phosphorus levels in lake

http://www.news-jour...29028faee4.html

wastewater IS cow and chicken and human poop and phosphorous is pee pee turns into white phosphorous after 3 weeks they need 2 stop polluting the lakes man next time they call it phosphorous set em straight and call em out for the liars they are. I think we should start a Lake O the Pines coalition to keep the lake clean like the citizens of caddo did.

Thats right Hayseed, waste is not supposed to be put in the water system anywhere at all its meant to be put on the ground or covered up with dirt and let the soil and sand and gravel naturally purify and filter it out as it leaches through the soil layers. grass and greenery serve this function. grass changes waste into nutrients for the soil and eliminates waste so why do cities wanna dump waste anywhere in any water supply THAT we eventually drink. disgusting man. The oxygen levels in both caddo and LOP are disastrously low thanks to big corrupt money in TX high places join the Caddo Lake Coalition even if you don't live there you better or the big fat cats who sell your water out from under you will be coming after your lake next. T Boone Pickens created his own water district authority with no legal sanction and he proceeded to appoint all 3 members of it himself, and his relatives there was no public election held for this water board. he wants to corral and block off all the water in his panhandle town and when it gets scarce you just watch...he's gonna be forcing thirsty ranchers and townspeople to buy it at whatever price he deems fit

Good info here. I had not realized they were doing that with Caddo and Lake of the Pines. My mother-in-law gets all sort of PO'd when she talks about it, that Ore City paid a lot of taxes to build that lake, and then they send it to other towns, who didn't pay the taxes. Nextdoor neighbor was telling me, I think it's one of those lakes up around Pittsburg/Mt. Pleasant, that it's so bad, you better not eat the fish. That's sad!

Noticed that Fork is having some good tournaments coming up I think in March or April.

Talked to an old guy from Hallsville a couple of months ago, and he said the biggest time he ever had was literally going down the river and going through the locks...

Maybe we should put info up for the folks on what lakes ARE NOT polluted and there's good fishing.

How's Toledo Bend, anybody know? We're planning several fishing trips down there this next spring.

As one poster noted on Buffet... yep, you can betcha that's what he's planning...he's been buying up a lot of railroad lines and land where there's water.

parent, exactly how much tax did Ore City pay when Lake O The Pines was built? Did Ore City with a burgeoning population of 1144 in 2010 ever have the capacity to tax its below average income populous in order to foot the bill for such a project as a lake? http://www.city-data.com/city/Ore-City-Texas.html

You think it is one of those lakes around Pittsburg/Mt. Pleasant? Do you ever look at a Texas map? There are three lakes in that area, Bob Sandlin , Lake Cypress Springs and Lake Monticello, a power plant lake. Is Monticello the one the neighbor referred to? I need to know these things. I don't want to be messing around a dry or polluted lake.

There is good fishing in Montana and good water as far as I know. Just be wary of areas historically known for copper mining and smelters. Some bodies of water I noticed looked pretty nasty. I can show you on a map.

Obviously, Lake of the Pines wasn't built in 2010...and I have no idea how much they were taxed...point is, they were taxed, citizens approved the tax to build it, and now "their" water is being sent to Longview, etc.

Yes, I know there's 3 lakes "up there"... and no, I don't remember which one our neighbor said.

And, yes, I'm aware of various towns throughout Montana that are literally inhabitable, much less their streams. We'll be visiting Montana, via truck and RV in about 2 or 3 years, but WE ARE NOT flying!

This next spring/summer, we have a trip planned to Toledo Bend - can't wait. I'm sure we'll go up to Beaver's Bend as well...not only for the lake itself, but the river. Couple of years, we're planning a trip to Lake Powell, see the sites, parks, etc., etc.

We're learning Fork, or will a little better, once it's spring...it's an odd lake, though, you'll be in 40 feet of water, and then 2 feet if you're not watching... LOL!

Obviously I realize construction of the Lake O The Pines dam began in 1955. What I'm asking is what is the difference in the tax base of the small city of Ore City today compared to 1955 when you indicated I assume that someone from Ore City had to pay a bunch of taxes for the lake. Anyway, this from wiki:

"Ore City was incorporated in the early 1950s. At that time, the number of residents had fallen to 385.[4][6] Growth resumed in the mid-1960s and by 1976, Ore City had a population of 900 with 34 businesses operating in the city. More than 1,000 people lived in the city by 2000."

I can only assume those in Ore City paid way more than they should have yet cannot imagine the general populous to be any more "wealthy" than they are today? We could research easily who paid the bulk of the $ necessary to build the dam. And as a side note I can only imagine eminent domain was involved paying landowner's handsomely for land that was inundated. Correct?

I have no idea if eminent domain was used or not. Obviously "city limits" is one figure of population; outlying areas, different. Lake of the Pines encompasses Jefferson and Ore City, two different counties, and I'm not sure how it went or how much they paid... the point I'm trying to make is, they paid for it, and now "their" water is being shipped to Longview. Question is, how much is the City of Longview paying and who are they paying?

As to their "wealth"... at that point in time, Lone Star Steel was alive and well, a lot of their workers lived in Ore City...not to mention one famous catfish restaurant, who had a love of Thoroughbreds.

I just hate to see that lake literally being drained by sending water "elsewhere"...at this point, there's only about one or two boat ramps where you can off load at... Sad.

We've been pricing canoes where we can get in and out of where we can't with our big ski/fish boat. Trying to find the right one that will fit a small trolling motor is a bit daunting.

Hares, I doubt that anyone voted to build Lake O' Pines much less voted to be taxed for the water usage. Milton Watts was an old family friend, he and his brother Perry, aka "PD" are most knowledgeable about how the lake came about. An ACT of congress allotted the funds to construct the dam so any taxes that have been collected have been inacted after the lake was formed and I doubt it came about through a vote of any kind other than from members of some form of government . The Flood Control Act of 1946 alloted monies for the USACE to build the dam for flood control of the Red River Basin - the lake was not initially built to be a water supply but to relieve the flooding of the Red and its tributaries .

If your land is flooded due to the actions of a gov't body and effectively made useless for agargarian purposes, does the gov't have to compensate the land owner? Also I have heard stories of 'Pinkerton types' coming around and swindling landowners of their property and/or mineral rights and then turning it over to the gov't - just stories from old timers I suppose but I bet there are elements of truth in them still. I heard tales that those types would find out a landowner's weakness like drinking or gambling or both and many landowners lost their lands in traveling gambling outfits and some were willing to sell the land for food during the depression years.

On the voters "voting in" stuff - If an election has a voter turn out of 1000 out of a possible 6000 and 900 of the 1000 vote "FOR" a measure - the majority gets in the end - literally. Yes or No ?

The taxes were for the creation of NETMWD and it's water intake and supply facilities, not to build the lake. Water districts are gov't sustainable development planning organizations. Taxes were collected for the creation of more gov't not for the building of Lake O' Pines, Your site never says the taxes went to building the lake it says they went to the "DISTRICT"

IMO taxing entities like water districts are the most corrupt and socialistic.

Bummer. I suppose "perch" fall in the same category as large mouth? And Lone Star Lake is one nasty looking body of water.

Nice lake growing up in the 50's, 60's and 70's. Not so now with the PCB's in it. Oh, did I mention the city of Lone Star pumps #### into the lake at the Barnes Creek Creek Bridge and have been fined in the past by TCEQ for the same?
