District 13-3A Basketball

Parisian

Recommended Posts

Girls race has two games left; boys still have four to go.

Boys Standings:

1. Pleasant Grove & Paris, 5-1

3. North Lamar 4-2

4. Liberty-Eylau 3-3

5. Atlanta 1-5

6. Pittsburg 0-6

Key Games left: Feb. 1 L-E @ NL; Feb. 5 PG @ Paris; Feb. 8 Paris @ NL; Feb. 12 L-E @ Paris, NL @ PG

Synopsis: PG has the best player in East Texas in Dustin Thomas. Paris has made remarkable strides and has now won 11 of its last 13 to make a serious playoff run. NL has an outstanding set of pressuring guards. L-E has some good looking athletes but they're behind the 8-ball right now and badly need to bump off NL Friday to stay in the chase.

Girls Standings:

1. Pittsburg 8-0

2. Liberty-Eylau 7-1

3. Paris 4-4

4. North Lamar 3-5

5. Pleasant Grove 2-6

6. Atlanta 0-8

Key Games Left: Feb. 1 L-E @ NL, Paris @ Pitt; Feb. 5 Pitt @ L-E, PG @ Paris

Synopsis: L-E has two D1 players and a group of seniors who have been around since the 2010 state title run. Pitt is stronger inside, also has tons of experience and plays smart. Barring an L-E upset to NL, Pitt will need to beat L-E in the finale to win outright; otherwise, this race could end up in a tie for first. Paris is young but lost its top scorer to a knee injury 2 weeks ago and is battling to hold on to third place. Paris probably needs to win 1 of its last 2 games to take third; otherwise this could end up in a 3-way tie for third.

The girls race comes down to the final night, and the boys' race looks headed that way, too, at least for playoff positioning.

Girls: Pittsburg has clinched at least a co-championship and can win outright Tuesday at L-E; otherwise, I would imagine there would be a playoff for the Nos. 1-2 seeds if L-E wins. Paris takes 3rd with win at home vs. PG; otherwise, we're probably looking at 3-way tie between Paris-PG-NL for No. 3 seed (and NL would be heavily favored to win a play-in spot).

Boys: I've looked at the scenarios of key remaining games. Pitt (0-8) and Atlanta (1-7) are eliminated from playoff consideration but each is capable of upsetting the apple cart on a given night. So, let's throw out a true mathemathical model and use a realistic approach that assumes the 4 contenders (Paris-PG-NL-LE) don't drop a game to those two, then:

  • PG is outright district champion with win Tuesday at Paris. Hawks would have 2-game lead on field with 2 to play and tiebreaker advantage over Paris.
  • Paris would have the inside track on the title with a win over PG, but there is one scenario with a 4-way tie among Paris-PG-NL-LE with 7-3 marks, a second scenario where PG could still win at 8-2 with Paris and LE tying for 2nd at 7-3, and a third scenario with Paris and PG tying for first at 8-2 with LE third at 7-3 or 6-4.
  • NL's now on the hot seat. Panthers could still get that improbable 4-way tie for first, but if they drop another game, the best they could hope for would be a tie for third with Paris at 6-4 (which would mean a play-in game).
  • L-E has the easiest finishing schedule. NL would have to win-out coupled with L-E loss to Paris for Leopards to be eliminated from playoffs.
  • Mathematically (again, assuming Pitt doesn't upset L-E or PG and Atlanta doesn't upset NL or L-E), here are the odds for finishes (these odds are rounded so the percentages may not equal 100%):
    1. PG 64%, Paris 33%, L-E 2%, NL 2%
    2. Paris 39%, PG 27%, L-E 23%, NL 11%
    3. L-E 61%, Paris 17%, NL 14%, PG 8%
    4. NL 73%, L-E 14%, Paris 11%, PG 2%

Again, let's emphazise these aren't pure mathematical odds, but for those trying to get an early start on filling playoff brackets, the arithmetic says PG-Paris-LE as 1-2-3.

Yep, should be interesting 10 days ahead.

Dang....I is impressed Parisian.....that is some good work....will have some fun games to watch the next few days

Thanks...took awhile to put the grid together, but it's interesting stuff to me. Everyone likes to play the "what-if" game, but nobody really wants to sit down and see the outcomes. I'll update after the Paris-PG game Tuesday...obviously that has a big bearing on the probabilities.

Big upset tonight on boys' side: Paris outscores Pleasant Grove, 27-11, in fourth quarter to win, 60-46. Paris takes over 1st with 7-1 mark, while PG is 6-2 with 2 games left. I don't have scores yet on the other two games (North Lamar 4-3 at Atlanta 1-6, Pittsburg 0-7 at Liberty-Eylau 4-3). I'll post a complete update in the morning, but Paris is virtually assured of a playoff spot (the only scenario where they would be out would be if there's a 4-tie tie at 7-3 among Paris, PG, NL, L-E and Paris loses the play-in tiebreaker. Same can be said for PG. Hawks could have clinched district title with a win tonight.

Again, don't have a score on Pitt at L-E girls. That game's for the district title. Paris lost to PG girls, 43-35, and NL beat Atlanta girls to create 3-way tie for 3rd with 4-6 records. Paris will play NL Thursday, 6 pm, in Mount Vernon, then the winner plays PG on Friday for the third playoff spot. NL should win the play-in games.

Final Girls Standings

1. (tie) Liberty-Eylau and Pittsburg 9-1

3. (tie) North Lamar, Paris, Pleasant Grove 4-6

6 Atlanta 0-10

Seeding Games: L-E and Pitt will apparently have a playoff to determine Nos. 1-2 seeding. Coaches are supposed to meet today. Meanwhile, Paris & NL meet Thursday, 6 pm, at Mount Vernon for 3rd place play-in game. Winner plays PG Friday at MV, 6 pm, for No. 3 seed.

Boys Standings

1. Paris 7-1

2. Pleasant Grove 6-2

3. (tie) Liberty-Eylau and North Lamar 5-3

5. Atlanta 1-7

6. Pittsburg 0-8

Feb. 8 Games: Paris @ NL, PG @ Pitt, Atl @ L-E

Feb. 12 Games: L-E @ Paris, NL @ PG, Pitt @ Atl

Synopsis: Interesting race just got more interesting Tuesday night with Paris' 60-46 win over PG. Hawks could have clinched title with win. The only way Paris doesn't make the playoffs would be if there's a 4-way tie for first at 7-3 and Cats lose out in a 4-team district tournament for playoff seeding. For that to happen, Paris would have to lose to NL and L-E, and NL beats PG. It's not completely out of the realm of possibility. Any of these four can beat the others on a given night. If Paris wins one of its final two games, the Cats clinch no worse than a tie for the district title. Unless L-E loses to Atlanta or PG loses to Pitt, NL has to win its final two (Paris, @PG) to even have a shot at the playoffs. Here are the updated odds on finishes (again, assumes PG beats Pitt and L-E beat Atl):

  1. Paris 66%, PG 28%, NL 3%, L-E 3%
  2. PG 53%, Paris 22%, L-E 16%, NL 9%
  3. L-E 72%, PG 16%, Paris 9%, NL 3%
  4. NL 78%, L-E 16%, Paris 3%, PG 3%

Pretty gritty effort by Paris girls tonight to beat North Lamar. Paris was sailing along in district at the midway point and seemed to have third place behind Pittsburg and Liberty-Eylau in tow when the Lady Cats' leading scorer blew out a knee. They were humiliated at home by NL, 70-36, and had a stinker of a game Tuesday (43-35 loss to PG) that set up the 3-way playoff for third. Paris girls are very young (No seniors, 6 sophomores and a freshman). From what I've seen in the district, they should be the odds-on favorite to win next year and maybe go far in the region. PG is also young, but I don't think they've got the depth or inside presence to hang with Paris next year if everyone returns.

L-E graduates a lot, but never rule them out of the picture. They've not had a losing season since 1997. Five of the 10 girls on the varsity right now will be back.

Lots of variables where kids are concerned, especially girls. No doubt L-E will recover from loss of that stellar senior group, but I didn't see a lot of depth on this year's squad. Of course, it doesn't take as many pieces to rebuild in basketball.

Wish both L-E and Pitt well in the playoffs. L-E has the superior talent in the starting 5, but I like Pitt's overall balance and team concept.

Girls final playoff seedings:

  1. Liberty-Eylau (won coin flip with Pittsburg)
  2. Pittsburg
  3. Pleasant Grove (won play-in tournament with Paris, NL)

Boys standings:

  1. Paris 8-1
  2. Pleasant Grove 7-2
  3. Liberty-Eylau 6-3
  4. North Lamar 5-4
  5. Atlanta 1-8
  6. Pittsburg 0-9

The playoff picture cleared up big-time this week with Paris wins at home over PG (60-46) and at NL (75-59). Paris has clinched no worse than a tie for first and can take sole possession of a district title Tuesday at home with win over L-E. PG must beat NL at home Tuesday and hope for L-E win over Paris to tie for first. Otherwise, Hawks finish second. L-E is locked into the No. 3 seed regardless. NL is eliminated from playoffs due to L-E sweep over NL this year. Paris, predicted to finish fourth in district preseason rankings, is on a roll right now. Cats have gone from 6-6 season mark to 20-8 and have won 6 straight and 11 of their last 12 games. This is Billy Mack Steed's 6th year as head coach at Paris and 6th straight 20-plus win season.

Paris beat Liberty-Eylau tonight, 69-61, to take sole possession of first in boys standings. L-E played without Davion Hall, who apparently stayed home with a sore back. L-E shot the ball well and crept within one point of Paris with 2 minutes left, but Paris closed out the game on a 7-0 run. Also tonight, Pleasant Grove beat North Lamar, 72-45. Atlanta (1-8) played Pittsburg (0-9). So, final boys playoff seedings:

  1. Paris 9-1
  2. Pleasant Grove 8-2
  3. Liberty-Eylau 6-4

Anyone who saw Paris early in the season would do a double-take to see this team now. They've won 7 straight, 12 of 13, and 15 of 17. They're not particularly impressive to watch, but they're on a roll right now. Also, Paris won the JV and freshmen unofficial district titles. The varsity-JV-freshman squads went a combined 23-3. Paris has a couple of court-saavy sophomore starters on the varsity and a deep pool of talent in the sub-varsities that includes a commodity Paris normally doesn't have: height. Cats could make serious playoff runs the next couple of years. This has been an amazing season and it might last 2 more weeks.

heard pg girls lost their bi district game to crandall

PG lost by nine or ten maybe 65-56...Crandall just killed PG in fourth qtr with steals and offensive rebounds...PG led most of game and at one point had a eleven point lead and could not sustain during the fourth qtr...Good Luck to Crandall who plays Mineola in next round
