I will tell you this about the 2 refs at Harmony that night: WR down by 3 with 20 or so seconds left and needs to foul, well the kid pushes the Harmony kid in the back instead of going for the ball so a flagrant was warranted, heres the kicker- Harmony recieved 4 freethrows and the ball back, thats how bad they were, and what is sad is they were both veteran officials!

So hopefully you guys can understand where Joe Kane is coming from.

We had one a few weeks back take a whistle put of his pocket and toss it in the stands at a fan. This fan had not done anything bad, just a lil ribbing but no cursing or anything . I was a few rows down, and after he threw the whistle in the stands, the fan waits for an out of bounds play, right in front of him, and blows the whistle LIGHTLY, and the ref throws him out. The fan drops the whistle, I go and pick it up and take it to the ref and tell him he might need it back since he just threw it, and that he can't be doing that, and he tries to throw me out. He is a joke.

I would've been escorted by the badge, if you know what I mean! I can't believe that the ref instigated it with tossing the whistle! He deserved all he got!!

Until the UIL starts holding officials accountable nothing is ever going to happen. On the other hand I agree 100% about the "how many games have yall reffed" thing. They need to give it a try!

So, are you saying that we should give being president a try? An NFL quarterback? A principal? A cop? Being your boss? NO we shouldn't!! That is their job! We trust that given the position that the individual knows how to do it!!

The UIL does the hold the officials accountable...every year you have to pass a rules test and a mechanics test. After that...its up to the individual chapters. A coach can scratch an official from any games their school is participating in. The good chapters, know who their best officials are and make sure they are getting in the games that need them. Whether it is a 5A district championship, or a 1A heated rivalry, the good chapters put their guys where they are most needed. I have seen guys that call college games officiating games between 2 not very good 1A schools simply because it is a very heated rivalry and good officials are needed to keep things under control.

The main reason for the shortage is most young officials can't take the abuse long enough to become good. I challenge anyone who think they can ref to join a chapter. Anyone can see every call seated but try making those calls while moving up and down the court. Promise you, one Jr Hg girls game and you'd have new respect for officials. Telling you most aren't calling for the money ($25-$45) a game but simply for the love of the game.

Tuesday Febuary 5, 2013, at Harmony Higschool I witnessed the worst officiated game that I have ever seen in my 33yrs of existence! I will be the first to admit that I have griped about officiating at least once or twice. However, this was a one-sided called game and it was obvious to everyone in the gym. Yes, my team was on the losing end of this one. So it stings even worse!! I am not gonna say anything about "home court advantage". What actually hurt the most was seeing our girls deflated, lose their pride and literally throw their hands up out of disgust and confusion as to why they deserved the treatment they were getting. If the opposing team slapped at our shot and hit the shooter’s arm, the ref motioned tip ball every time. It was so obvious that there was contact! A shooter from the other team lobs the ball, there is a definite foot and half of air between the ball and shooter’s hand. Our girl swats it(All Ball!). All of our fans go crazy only to hear a delayed whistle and notice the ref calling a foul! The opposing dribbler carries the ball while directly in front of the ref numerous times. Everyone seen it! Nothing was called. You would think our girls were 8 yr old little dribblers with all the traveling and double dribbles called on us. We get an offensive rebound and go back up only to get hacked hard across the forehead. NO FOUL!! Obvious Obvious Obvious!!! Fans yelling harshly at the ref only to have him glance at them with a smirk. It was like he knew what he was doing, because some comments certainly deserved a warning or possibly even an escort out of the gym. The end of the game, our girls are intentionally fouling the opposing players. NO FOULS CALLED!! SO obvious that we were fouling!! There were two refs. Yeah, I said two! This game was a very important game for both teams. There should've been THREE refs!!

If my beliefs are true, I hope that all involved can live with themselves...

I wish the Harmony girls nothing but a good playoff run. Go represent the district well..

I actually played there once and the officiating was a bit one sided. aside from that had to be the worst place i ever played, with horrible fans who thought it was amusing to call us monkeys because are teams were all black.

Not saying that at all. Officiating is everyone of those guys second job.

So, what you are saying is....Due to the implications of a game which will decide final standings of a district a chapter should send "who is most needed"?

I understand that officiating is a second job. Do they still get paid money? They should know what they are doing. This isn't a family reunion game where uncle Joe and Aunt Ora Lee are calling it as they take picx!

It doesn't have to be a game that determines the final district standing. On a nightly basis, the good chapters send the best refs to the games that they are most needed at. They don't care if it is a 1A 1st district game or a 5A district championship.

With that being said, there are some chapters that are much better than others. Personally, i think the Longview chapter is the best in East Texas.

Considering those guys came from the Longview chapter, I would not be able to vouch for that statement... If it were your choice you would've certainly sent better representatives. I assure you of that.

I will boo a ref in a heart beat if I think he missed a call. Don't think it's unsportsmanlike at all either. lol!

"CLICK... CLICK.... BOO!" And, then I let it go.

On the flip-side, I wouldn't call a game if you begged me.

On another note, I will also yell at a coach who gets on the field/court.

"Get off the field!" My favorite coach to yell at = Jeff Traylor :)

+1 Good Post Frank

I am real thankfull for the refs and appreciate their williness to serve because what ever they are paid it is not enough.

but what gets me is a ref that calls fouls on one team till they hit bonus then start calling on another team to even the fouls out. I guess basketball the refs can be more a determining factor.

Also refs that let a game get out of control and posibilty of someone getting hurt.

Refs should be willing to take some critism if it keeps coming game after game then they should relize they should stick with their day job.

Refs have let the game get way to physical. Pushing and hacking a guard all the way down the court is common place now and it is rediculous. They have taken skilled players out of the game and allowed an unskilled football player to be an important part of the game. I absolutely hate it. Kids hold and push other kids off the ball constantly. It's just an ugly game now. The officials need to start calling fouls from the get go and let them play basketball instead of rugby!!

I'd have to disagree. Longview chapter is one of the worst in east Texas! The top 3 or 4 are good but after that it's embarrassing to see what they throw out there for varsity games. They have the same number of cross-eyed refs as they do one-eyed refs!

I saw a stif arm to the forehead as a player came down the court with the ball. boy stiff armed was flaten, he must have said something because he got the teck and the stiffarm was not fouled.

Doomer has family on the "world wide web" !!!

It is not all the refs fault. Coaches teach many things that dirty up the game. Such as chinning the ball, bumping cutters, hedging, and setting screens outside their body which all leads to more contact. Offense is just as guilty of initiating contact than the defense.
