DLine06
For those that don't know, today was the world cup draw which decides what teams will be in what groups to play each other. The US gets Germany (2nd in power ranks, 4th in the index), Portugal (16th) and Ghana (who has KO'ed the US in back to back World Cups). We got the dreaded Group of Death and the worst travel schedule of the tournament with 9,000 miles. Going to be a fun time in Brazil.
flukeshot
Nate Silver gave the US a 39% chance of getting out of this group. To be honest that's better than I would've thought.
Coach Rab
It will be fun to watch. USA has the talent to pull the upset against Germany and Portugal. We will just need some outstanding defensive play, coupled with a few opportunities going our way when we can on O. Mexico, our punching bag, lucks out... DaveTV1
I watched about 4 minutes of it because it was on television at work, and it appears to be more rigged than the NBA draft. If they're going to do these little dog and pony shows, shouldn't they at least draw the plastic soccer balls for the brackets as well. The only reason worth watching it in my opinion, was for the chick with freckles.
bordertown
Missed the "draw" - Are all the teams in the draw and you could have in theory the #1 & #2 in the same group or are the top teams placed and the remaining teams drawn?
flukeshot
Four pots of eight teams. A group is made by drawing one team from each pot (not quite that simple, but essentially). The top 8 teams in the FIFA rankings were placed in the first pot, so no they couldn't be drawn in the same group. A totally random draw would be hilarious though. Group A: Brazil, Argentina, Spain, Germany? Let's do it!
bordertown
If each "bucket" is 1-8 seeds, 9-16, 17-24 & 25-32. Then it is a fair draw.
