Border City Shootout

Grouping has familiar schools not playing each other in bracket. Good move.

Some good talent coming in from out of Texarkana area, will be stiff competition.

Friday's scores:

  • Sulphur Springs 3, Pleasant Grove 1
  • Whitehouse 3, Texas High 0
  • Paris 9, Atlanta 0
  • SS 4, TX 0
  • Paris 4, PG 1
  • WH 6, ATL 0

Obviously, a mismatch in group play (29-2 composite so far). Don't know how championship and 3rd place pairings will be determined.

Saturday's scores:

  • Whitehouse 3, Pleasant Grove 0
  • Paris 4, Texas High 0
  • Sulphur Springs 6, Atlanta 0
  • Third Place: Sulphur Springs 1, Pleasant Grove 0 (SSHS wins 14-13 shootout after 0-0 regulation tie)
  • Championship: Paris 3, Whitehouse 0

Paris is now 13-2-1 and the clear favorite to win District 19-4A which starts next week. Cats have a talented senior class led by forwards Blake Beshirs and Michael Cade (44 career goals each). Unfortunately, realignment comes a year too late for them. Under current playoff brackets, they have to fight their way through the Dallas suburbs to earn a shot at state.

Paris will be 4A-1 for football, which will be released tomorrow. Biggest question there is whether the 2 Lamar County schools (Paris and North Lamar) will be sent east, south, or west (or combination of which) for new district alignment.

As for soccer, I don't think that alignment will be announced for a month or two, but there will be 3 conferences instead of the current 2 which means current 3A schools like Paris won't have to face schools 2-to-3 times their size to fight through the playoffs. Our current soccer district (19-4A) is comprised of Paris, NL, Sulphur Springs, Greenville, Bonham, and Princeton. Paris and SSHS have been more than competitive in recent years, but draw the Dallas suburbs in their quarterfinal brackets, which makes for a near impossible pathway to regionals.

It's my understanding that realignments will be released for football and, (I think) basketball today. Conferences 4A and below will be split into 2 divisions for football only. How that affects alignments for sports other than football is still unknown (for 4A and below). While, yes, 5A and 6A schools may be using the same districts for soccer, 4A will be a whole new ballgame.
