BINGO!! I tried to explain this several posts ago but got the same dumb a reply about how football was the "King" in Texas. the problem I thought was that the AD was having a "Universal" offseason while the FB program worked on football. I have seen alot of Uinversal offseason operate something like this.......Football does drills while everyone else has "Universal" grab butt session in the weightroom while all coaches work football except the first year guy who wants to be all the kids favorite coach hangs out with the AYO's (All you others) in the weightroom. May have been wrong but that is how I took it. And for the record, I am as pro weights as you can get. Played for a Nationally ranked top 5 JUCO program and they killed us in the weightroom so baseball kids will get no sympathy from me for having to lift.

Howard?

I think you hit the nail on the head.

It is what it is !!! Football is king in Texas !! ADs get fired in Texas for bad football teams. How many ADs have been canned for a bad track team or a bad basketball team or bad baseball ???? You will NOT EVER hear this conversation in Texas-- look coach i understand your football record is150 wins and 6 loses the past 12 years with 3 state championships BUT the baseball team has been horrible the past 2 years. Your off season program really should be called football off season. Sooooo YOUR FIRED!!!! Its Not happening in Texas!!! Move up north or to baseball school

This is the mentality that I hate. As long as football is winning then all is ok. That rubbish. As much time as football gets DURING athletics, they should be undefeated every year. Last I checked, the title is usually A.D./Head football coach. If I am supt. and football is good but everything else is horrible, I immediatly do some deeper evaluation of my A.D. They get paid big money to develop the ENTIRE program and not just football. Other sports would flourish to if all the extra time went into their programs as football. Let the cheerleaders, band, pep squad, drill team, etc. go to other sports and attendance and revenue would both increase dramatically. Not saying it would be the same exactly, but would definately not be as lopsided. I wonder what would happen to the good football teams if they were treated just like baseball team where offseasons were concerned. Its easy to say football is King when all things are in place for the sport to benefit the program and generate revenue.

I think you are missing understanding the phrase " football is king". It isn't "king" because it gets the attention. It gets the attention because it is "king". Subtle difference but it makes a big difference. And whither you like it or agree with it, most AD will lose their job if football loses. Very few will lose their job for other sports losing. Unless you can change that it will continue to be this way.

I'm just waiting on the day the FDA issues a Cialis/Viagra type warning with each sale of a football in the State of Texas, although from some of the posts on here, I think 4 hours might be on the low side.

Doesnt change my opinion either way. I love the game. I just dont agree with the emphasis put on it to excel and not have the same expecations/tools provided to the other sports. I would have a hard time convincing myself that I was a good A.D. if all the sports at my school were useless except for football. (BTW, I am not an A.D.) I am all for splitting the positions in 4A and up.

So more administration salaries for cash strapped small schools? School isn't about athletics, its about academics. Don't get me wrong sports are important, just not the most important. Adjust and overcome. That's what made America so great. We are losing that ability.

I didn't say pay the AD and Football coach both administrative salaries. If the FB coach is a coach only, then he is not an administrator.

And I didnt say small schools. I said 4A and up.

This thread was started and the whole discussion is about a small school. Entirely different animal if you want to talk about 4A and up.

At the best programs I coached in there was NO difference between football and baseball. Because all sports are after school and like I said earlier the athletic period is for weights and agility development. If ANYTHING baseball and basketball get more than football because those kids get to go with their Coach on game day twice a week rather than once a week like football.

And like I said earlier most times a baseball parent complains about weight lifting is because Little Johnny is whining about how sore he is because those mean old coaches are making him work too hard in the weight room and running.

Poor Little Johnny. He just wants to play baseball;. Why should he have to lift those heavy old weights?

Exactly!!!! But the problem is that at most schools, it doesnt happen like this. The athletic period is used for football. If we both have baseball teams that have to play each other and are of equal talent and we can choose which one we coach,....I take the boys that lift and beat you every time. I am very very very pro-lifting for ALL sports. As for those parents...well, if it wasnt raising hades for lifting it would be something else. There is no cure for stupid.
