Tucson, Little Rock want bowl games

ucson, Arizona, will apply for a new bowl game this season, while Little Rock, Arkansas, has "strong interest" in also adding a game, sources said Monday.

The deadline to apply for new bowl certification with the NCAA is Wednesday, and the organization will decide whether to approve a game a few weeks later. According to sources, if a bowl has two conferences to support it and can get a television network to show the game, the bowl is usually approved by the NCAA.

Tucson is expected to apply Tuesday, while Little Rock officials are finalizing plans with the hope of applying for a game this season, sources said.

If successful, the addition of Tucson and Little Rock bowl games -- along with the new Cure Bowl in Orlando -- would increase the number of bowls to 42, including the College Football Playoff title game. That means 82 teams will be needed to fill the bowls, or 65 percent of the 127 FBS teams this season.

And there could be even more bowls in 2016. The Pac-12 had exploratory discussions about starting a bowl in Melbourne, Australia, this year, but is now targeting the 2016 season, sources said.

The working title for the Tucson bowl is the Arizona Bowl and would be played at the University of Arizona. It would feature teams from the Mountain West and Conference USA in its debut season.

The Arizona Bowl likely would be played between Christmas and early January, said Alan Young, chief operating officer for the Arizona Sports and Entertainment Commission. Fox Sports or CBS Sports Network is the most likely candidate to televise the Arizona Bowl, sources said.

The Arizona Bowl would bring a bowl game back to Tucson for the first time since 1999. The Copper Bowl was located in Tucson from 1989 through 1999; in 1998 and 1999 it was called the Insight.com Bowl -- until Fiesta Bowl officials moved the bowl to Phoenix in 2000. It has been in the Phoenix/Tempe area ever since and was renamed the Cactus Bowl last season.

The Little Rock bowl, which would be played at War Memorial Stadium, would pair teams from the American and Sun Belt conferences, sources said. CBS Sports Network or NBC Sports Network is the likely broadcast partner, sources said.

The Cure Bowl, to be played Dec. 19 at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, will pit teams from the American and Sun Belt and will be televised on CBS Sports Network.

It is not that I do not like more football, it is just that making a bowl game is no longer that big of a deal.

The fake playoff did that.......now the more the merrier......let's get all the College Football we can before the phoney national champion is crowned and we have 7 months of nothing....... :P

Again I don't mean to question Any of y'all fan hood but some of these bowl games aren't any good. It's kinda like when A&M plays Lamar or Lsu plays Sam Houston except both teams aren't all that great.

It's your "fanhood" thats in question....as a TRUE fan of the game, I'd watch momma mikes cooking school (1 - 9) against sister theresa's school of nuns (0 - 10) if that's what was on........YOU only want to watch elites....you are not a fan of the sport, you are a front runner......HUGE difference.......

It's more regional for me the power conferences is what I will watch . I will watch select ACC games and few mountain west depending on the matchups. Too much can be too much imo. Everyone shouldn't get a ribbon .

so you are not a fan of the sport, then......if you can get "too much" of your sport, you obviously don't like it that much.....don't try to pass yourself off as a real fan when it's obvious you are only a casual one......

Somebody upset that Baylor tcu didn't get an invite. The right teams were in however 4 more would have been right.

it's not a TRUE playoff if every Conference champion does not get to participate.......it's an invitational tournament and it does not name a "national champion" any more than the UPI/AP or the BCS did......

Lol only in games that I am interested in. I watch mostly the Aggies but I don't care about the San Francisco bowl. Now if you play somebody in that bowl worth watching lol. While I am at it only 7-5 teams should be in a bowl game imo.

So, don't come on here claiming you are a fan.....

You might want to write your bevo 10 -2 head guy on that. One true champion ain't so true just an fyi.

You and btex must share a brain and it's not your day......I don't give a rats butt about the horns.....the only college team I LIKE is SFA......the rest I watch because, unlike you, I am a fan of the SPORT, not just the "elites"......

Lol many feel this way don't kid yourself. Ratings don't lie

Being an intelligent person able to make my own decisions without consulting what everyone else is doing (something you wouldn't understand), I don't really care what the ratings have to say about it......

What you obviously missed the point this has nothing b to do with texas. It's there conference but the conference leader isn't that bright apparently. One true champ is a joke and you know it.

...and irrelevant to this discussion......look up irrelevant if you don't know what it means......

I think the issue with adding bowl games is sponsorship. Independence Bowl lost Duck Commander after one year. I understand communities wanting to host bowl games for the filling up hotel rooms during a dead period of the year. If they add bowls, I think they need to be in northern domed stadiums.

Has it ever been? There are only about 10 Bowls that anyone ever cared about.

Cotton, Peach, Rose, Orange, Fiesta, Capital One, Sugar and Independence Bowl (jk jk). But really... I like the bowls, but I like it when there are 3 a day that mean nothing... I hate the ones that are the only game at 8 to fill space between the other bowls and Championship game

I am going back to the days when all of the bowls were named after a fruit or a plant!

Back before the MAC and CUSA schools ceased to exist then lol...

Which in my opinion, the most innovative offenses are seen in the lesser bowls. Sumlin made his brand of football popular by playing in the Smoke a Bowl and the Golden Corral All You Can Eat Bowl :$

I am not opposed to this. The schools add some money to their budgets and the fans of those teams get to see one more game. I would watch the walkons of a 2-10 Colorado vs a 3-9 Arkansas st if it meant I got to watch more ncaa football games and less nba basketball.

+1

expand the playoffs, playoffs, playoffs .....

How much expansion is too much? But anything beyond 8 brings in the all conference champions argument.
