After throwing three interceptions and fumbling one muffed punt, the Longview Lobos improved to 2-0 on the season for the first time since 2011. In the win, the Lobos won their 46th game over their arch rivals from north Tyler behind a strong running game that surpassed 300 yards. Tylan Miller’s three touchdown night gave him 5 on the young season, and shot him up into a tie for 8th all-time in touchdowns scored by a Lobo with 26. After a long night of scoreboard technical issues, searching for an officiating crew and turnovers/penalties that plagued the Lobos in the first half, Longview came out in the second half and dominated Cujo limiting the Lions to 90 yards total in the half. The 34 points Longview has allowed in the opening two games of the season is the least amount of points they’ve allowed to open a season since 2011, when they allowed just 22 points. Next up for the Lobos is a familiar location against an unfamiliar team. Independence Stadium in Shreveport has been kind towards Longview, especially in recent years. The Lobos have a 6-1 record inside the stadium, with three wins coming in the last five seasons. The last two visits for Longview to Shreveport for the Battle on the Border have been as close as you could have seen. A missed extra point was all that separated Longview and Olive Branch back in 2013, while the Lobos held off a comeback attempt from Monroe Neville last season in a 19-13 victory over the eventual State Champions from Louisiana. The opponent for the 2015 finale of the Battle on the Border will be Shreveport Byrd, a team Longview hasn’t faced off against in 54 years. The Yellowjackets are a team that, dating back to 1928, has completely dominated the Lobos historically. A 6-game losing streak is only bested by Lufkin’s 11-game winning streak over the Lobos for the longest winning streak ever against Longview. The 6 consecutive losses to open a series is the longest Longview has ever gone without at least one win to start a series. Byrd finished 12-1 last season, only losing to West Monroe in the 5A State Quarterfinals. In 1969, Longview won it’s 6th straight season opener with a 27-7 victory over the Bisons of Dallas Sunset. In 1975, a 306 yard rushing night coupled with holding the Rams to -4 yards rushing gave Longview a dominating 34-0 victory over Waco Richfield at Paul Tyson Stadium. Thomas Cook put up two scores in the 3rd quarter following Leo McCoy and Johnny Fuller touchdown’s in the first half for the Lobos. In 1980, after a scoreline first quarter…a 22 point 2nd quarter paved the way for Nathan Harris and Terry Morrow to tally up the points in a 35-19 victory for the Lobos over Fort Worth Paschal. Nathan Harris pulled in four receptions for 144 yards in the effort as the Lobos rolled to a 2-0 start. In 1986, despite a snap over the punter’s head giving the Bulldogs a safety, the Lobos steam rolled Fort Worth Trimble Tech to the tune of 28-2. Thomas Snoddy had two first half touchdowns that paved the way for the Lobos. Joe Brookins’ 70 yard interception return sealed the deal for Longview in the 2nd quarter. In 1997, trailing 7-3 at halftime from Leo Buckley Stadium in Killeen, the Lobos came out eating up clock and yards in a drive taking up over half the 3rd quarter before Shawn Byrdsong hailed in a pass from Jay Hurst to put the Lobos up 10-7. A safety late in the fourth quarter was the rest of the scoring as the Lobos knocked off Killeen 12-7 to move to 2-0. In 2003, Lake Highlands ran back the longest interception return given up by Longview in school history with a 90 yard return by the Wildcats’ Steven Coleman..but it wasn’t enough as Longview slipped past LH 24-14. Rogers Taylor and Quincy Grant gave the Lobos the two touchdown lead before the two schools traded scores the rest of the way. In 2008, a 52-22 victory over Evangel that saw the Lobos rolled up 454 yards of offense and hold the Eagles to -21 yards rushing on the day behind 11 sacks on the day for the Lobo defense, was forfeited shortly after because of an ineligible player used on one play late in the fourth quarter. Regardless, the Lobos jumped out to a 38-0 lead on their former rivals in Evangel, ranked #2 in the state coming in, before the Eagles answered on the day in the 4th quarter. The Lobo defense rolled up 115 yards in yards lost on the night. The game was originally scheduled to be played against Barbers Hill but Hurricane Ike forced the cancellation and the Lobos and Eagles were forced to scramble for opponents. gtee2
Great stuff Stat boy! Kinda odd...the player I had the most confidence for Lobos now does seem like a liability. Hope I'm wrong.
LOBOFAN84
I am still reeling from last nights game! All I can keep thinking about in this next game is sitting at Independence Stadium in the middle of the night, sweating! It will be a recurring nightmare this week. I am at a loss to what I am supposed to expect next Saturday from my Lobos!

LoboFan07
Summary updated. Not much to go on for Byrd, but they're definitely a good team. King was saying last night on the post game show that they're definitely a top 5 team in the state. for some reason it is usually unseasonably cool at the Battle on the Border....... remember last year? It was definitely chilly last year. I have no problem with it being like that again. 07....I think it was 1980 instead of 1989 when Nate Harris and Terry Morrow played. Yep! My bad, clicked the wrong number haha.

LoboFan07
High next Saturday - 80 Already jumped 6 degrees in 12 hours. Supposedly it's going to be raining a lot this upcoming week but not supposed to Saturday, so that'll be good for us at least. I'm guessing we'll kick off at 9:15. LoboFan07
Couple points about playing Shreveport Byrd:- Only 3 times has Longview lost 6 or more games consecutively to a team. Shreveport Byrd's 6 game winning streak over Longview is one of those, and the only current streak.- The 6 game losing streak to start a series is the worst streak to start a series in Longview history.- Longview is trailing 13 series in which the teams have played two or more times. The Byrd series is the only series that an opponent has more than a 2 game lead on Longview.- The time between next Saturday and the last time the two teams met will rank 7th in team history of longest time between meetings, with 53 years 11 months and 21 days. Five0pd310
IMO, Longview's line this year is suited for power running. I mentioned it early in the season that I was worrying about their size in relation to their mobility. They will definitely be an attribute in a power running game. I believe they will be a liability in a speed/spread offense. Last night's game with JT strengthened my stance on that. I think their best chance at success this year is to play to the strength of their O-line. I would Power-I the hell out of everyone. There were seasons that Bero and Cox would have killed for this kind of o-line. Now is the time for King to take advantage of his fortunes in the trenches this year. They have one more preseason game to find out if they can make the spread game work. If not, it should be back to the Old School. JMO.

I didn't want your family to think you were hanging out with a complete hoodlum! I think I scared 73's daughters when I screamed at the ref to get off his knees cause he was blowing the game! Oh well, they may never come back. I might need to apologize to 73, although he did laugh out loud! Lol!

I said that at the beginning of the season, that this is right up King's ally. He loves to run the ball and can almost make you like it with the line he has this year. But in the first two games he has come out and toss the ball around to much. I know the season is young and you experiment with different sets and formations, but find an identity first and then morph off of that. The sets he has been trying to throw out of have been simplistic and is defendable with the athletes on the teams we have played so far. I think it has put to much pressure on Ross, as well as many fans, and he is trying to do too much. Once the run is established, then that opens up your passing game off the run game and then good things will happen for the QB and receivers.
