GAME PREVIEW & SERIES REVIEW

And so the two foes meet once again. The Lobos and Panthers meet for the second consecutive season in the bi-district round of the UIL playoffs, and the same setting will take place as the two squads meet for the 3rd time ever at Rose Stadium in Tyler. It will be the 9th time in Lobo history that Longview has met an opponent in back to back years, the first since meeting Rowlett in back to back bi-district games in 2012 and 2013, and the second time the Lobos and Panthers will meet back to back (1936 and 1937). Along with this game being the fourth meeting between the two schools in just the past two years, Longview and Lufkin will meet for the 9th time overall in post season play. Both teams have 4 wins a’piece. This is the fourth playoff meeting since 2002, with Longview winning last year’s game in record breaking fashion with a 28 point comeback and a two point conversion to pull out the victory 43-42. This all marks just the fourth regular season rematch in Lobo history, with three of them coming against Lufkin. After squaring off in the opening week of the season, a game that saw the Lobos block an extra point to pull away with a 21-20 victory, Longview went on to grab a share of the district championship and finish the regular season with an 8-2 record for the second straight season. Lufkin, on the other hand, finished 2nd in district play and finished with a 7-3 record with one win being decided by coin flip, their best record since finishing 9-4 in 2012. Not much hasn’t already been said about Longview and Lufkin when comes to their rivalry. It’s a rivalry that dates back to 1932, and has seen pretty much everything you could imagine. From 4th quarter comebacks, like Longview’s 12 point 4th quarter to knock Lufkin out of the post season in 1940, to back and forth games, like Lufkin’s 35-32 victory in 1955 that included a 46 point 2nd half. From the district title games of the 1970s to the overtime games in 1998 and 2008. From seeing over 30,000 at SFA in the 2004 playoff game to the unreal comeback in last season’s comeback victory for Longview. It’s a 77 game history, going on 78 after Friday night, that continues to be one of the best rivalries in the state of Texas. And one that is as close as could be. Only Longview’s one point win separates the two in any statistical record. It will once again come down to who makes the most mistakes.

ON THIS DATE IN LOBO HISTORY: November 13th

In 1959, John Tyler and Longview battled in Lobo Stadium to a 0-0 tie. With the district championship on the line, it was the Lions who were celebrating at the end of the night having won the tiebreaker on penetrations 2 to 1. The Lobos’ lone penetration of the night ended on a fumble at the 13 yard line.

In 1964, John Tyler book ended the 1st and 4th quarters with scores in the 2nd and 3rd to escape Rose Stadium with a 14-0 victory over the Lobos. Longview was held to just 86 yards on the night.

In 1970, Longview was held to just 91 yards in the season finale as the Lobos fell to Lufkin, 7-0. Clifford Davis scored the only touchdown of the night from 9 yards out in cold, rainy night at Lobo Stadium.

In 1981, Longview’s Donnie Centers saved the day against Pine Tree in two ways. First, he picked off a pass with 2:13 left on the clock on his own 2-yard line as the Pirates were looking for the winning score. Then, he caught the winning touchdown pass with 1:17 left from 36 yards out and the Lobos escaped Lobo Stadium with a 13-7 victory over cross town rival Pine Tree.

In 1987, Terance Carter hauled in a 62 yard pass late in the first quarter and the Lobos never looked back as they knocked off Killeen Ellison inside Texas Stadium, 28-10, in the Bi-District Round. Ray Allison, Kevin Middleton and Mike Tidwell all added scores for the Lobos.

In 2004, the Lobos traveled to Williams Stadium in Garland fresh off a 10-0 regular season. With Raider players talking all week in the Dallas paper, the Lobos put quick work to their bi-district opponents, as the Vondrell McGee show took over. McGee tallied five touchdowns, four in the first half, as the Lobos ran for 403 yards rushing and tallied up 515 total yards in a 49-27 victory.

In 2009, Trey Metoyer caught a 69 yard pass in the first quarter to send chills up an upset over Longview fans early on against Whitehouse. However, in the 2nd quarter, the Lobos took complete control. The Lobos rushed for 378 yards on the night racking up 508 total yards and holding the Wildcats to -4 on the night in a 52-9 victory. 7 different Lobos tallied touchdowns on the night for Longview. It was Longview’s first home playoff game since 1984.

In 2010, fresh off an upset of #7 DeSoto just a week prior, the Lobos opened their post season run against David Ash and Belton. Despite just a 3-0 lead after one quarter, the Lobos took complete control in the 2nd with LaDarrin Robertson rushing for three touchdowns. The Lobos rushed for 266 yards on the night and knocked off Tigers, 52-28.
