Metroplex kids play aau and showcase basketball pretty much year round. They have many basketball travel organizations that work on basketball year round and play in tournaments year round. Also the metroplex schools have coaches that strictly coach basketball and have played it in college or some level of pro. Outside the metroplex, AD are hired with the dual position of ad/ HC football so schools offer a better salary. They bring in football coaches and assign them other sports after football. Football gets you hired and fired so most AD are going to make sure they have the best football staff. In this case the other sports suffer many times. Basketball is a complex sport that takes as much preparation and a coach with great knowledge and passion for basketball. Alot of these AD going to universal offseason to get players ready for football. So they don't spend as much time on basketball as needed, especially if their football team makes the playoffs every year. There is alot of basketball talent in east texas , just there is more emphasis placed on football. Alot of the girls teams are good because they have coaches that are basketball coaches that start working with them when school starts. It makes a difference in your basketball program if you have a coach that specializes in basketball.

At the bigger schools in East Texas, I wouldn't say this is completely true. Yes, some of the Freshman and maybe JV coaches, coach other sports, but for the most part they have strictly basketball coaches. Also, Tyler ISD has and AD that does strictly AD business. The Head football coach at JT and Lee are AD's at their schools, but not for the district. I think you have plenty of talent in east texas, but you are correct, more emphasis on football. Plenty over very good basketball players choosing football.

As does Martins Mill, Clarksville, Teneha and Grapeland on the boys side. Whinny has always been great on the girls side. Larger schools not so much

small schools do good in east Texas because all of the power houses in the big cities are in the larger classifications.

I believe the emphasis was on larger ET schools not being very good at basketball. A small school with talent that can't win at basketball, the PROGRAM is just not very good.

why even bother we all know in region 3 its gonna come down to crockett vs kountz to see who goes to state.

Watch Westwood play mexia without their 6'5 post and it was nip and tuck the whole way. Game could of went either way. First game for both teams. If you take Westwood lightly you lose. I can see them being very good come playoff time.

Hoopinsider has the Van bracket posted now. I expect to see a Paris vs. Brownsboro semifinal on Saturday followed by a Paris vs. Princeton championship later that day.

The more interesting tournament this week will be in Fairfield which includes several state-ranked teams including 2. Wheatley, 6. Argyle, 20. Decatur, 22. Fairfield, #20-2A Dallas Gateway. Should give us a glimpse at regional strengths.

Paris beat Crandall 74-46 Friday and will play Brownsboro at 1 today. It's the closest victory margin so far this year for the 9th-ranked Wildcats (4-0), whose average win is 87-37. Cats can score, but they also can play defense.

In another game of some regional note, #6 Argyle knocked off #2 Houston Wheatley last night at the Fairfield Tournament, 62-60. Assuming Argyle adds its football players to the mix, Eagles will be a tough out.

The Center Riders will be a team to look out for as well. Have lots of talent and good size to match up with other teams as well. Played a very good Marshall team 3 days after losing FB game in the 3rd round, with all players except 1 being FB players. Always have a tough district but make post season and its there where the match ups usually come down to coaching.
