That's still better than our combined ERAs, Joe ;)

Who was a well-known major league umpire who also won a championship in another sport......??

The only man enshrined in both the Baseball Hall Of Fame and Pro Football Hall Of Fame: Cal Hubbard.

Hubbard won NFL championships as an offensive lineman/offensive end/linebacker with the 1927 New York Giants & 1929-31 Green Bay Packers .............. and was an American League umpire for 15 years & spent another 15 years as MLB Supervisor Of Umpires.

The one I was referring to was Bill Stewart.

He umpired for 21 years and served as a referee in the NHL.

He made the call on a pickoff play in the 1948 World Series which was the "big play of the game". On a close call at second on a pickoff play, pinch runner Phil Masi was ruled safe, and then scored the game's only run on a single.

Cheapy will like the rest of the story..............!! This man served nine years as a referee in the NHL, and during the 1937-38 season coached Chicago to the NHL Championship. A few months after that, on June 15, 1938, he was the umpire behind the plate when Jonny Vander Meer threw his second consecutive no-hitter.

Bill Stewart was the man and what a career he had !!

Mark Teixeria...........NEXT QUIZ...........Who came in 5th with one vote behind the winner, Mike Hargrove, in the 1974 Rookie of the Year voting..........???
