shoelessjoelives
The one I was referring to was Bill Stewart. He umpired for 21 years and served as a referee in the NHL. He made the call on a pickoff play in the 1948 World Series which was the "big play of the game". On a close call at second on a pickoff play, pinch runner Phil Masi was ruled safe, and then scored the game's only run on a single. Cheapy will like the rest of the story..............!! This man served nine years as a referee in the NHL, and during the 1937-38 season coached Chicago to the NHL Championship. A few months after that, on June 15, 1938, he was the umpire behind the plate when Jonny Vander Meer threw his second consecutive no-hitter. Bill Stewart was the man and what a career he had !!
