cheaptrick77
Phillies' lefty Chris Short on June 29, 1961 from baseball-fever.com: In Short's game as 'catcher' he was one of 5 pitchers warming up. Giants & Phillie mgrs Al Dark & Gene Mauch were trying to outsmart each other by refusing to name their starting pitchers. Being the home team, Mauch had to turn his in first, so he listed 4 pitchers in his starting lineup, 1 as the pitcher & 3 at other positions where he sometimes used the lefty/righty platoon. He listed Short as the catcher. Then when he got a look at Dark's lineup, he made 3 substitutions before taking the field in the top of the first inning. So Short never actually played in the game. Until 1976, players received credit for a game played simply by being listed in the starting lineup at that position (which is why Lou Gehrig has a game at shortstop when he never actually played shortstop.) Under today's rules, Short would be credited with a game played (just like a pinch-hitter who is announced & leaves the game for another pinch-hitter following a pitching change) but he wouldn't be credited with a game caught under today's rules. Who was the first pitcher in modern time (1903 and later) to win 20 games for a last place team ?? In 1918 the last place Philadelphia A's had a youngster named Scott Perry. He was a workhorse for this team pitching in 44 games and starting 36 of them. He had an amazing record of 20-19 with an ERA of 1.98.
