With the summer upon us, I figured it was time to let the 2016-17 thread fade into the distance. Time to look to the future.

 

Since we are in a time of speculation only.... I thought I'd toss out some things to discuss to pass the 90-something days we have until kickoff.

 

We will start with some football questions:

 

1. Who do you think takes steps forward in 2017? Meaning more wins than they had in 2016. Why?

 

2. Who do you think takes steps backwards in 2017? Why?

 

3. Who is your favorite for the district championship? Why?

 

4. Who is the most likely challenger for said district championship? Why?

 

4. Who do you think snatches up the #3 and #4 slots? Why?

 

5. Who is your darkhorse? Why?

 

6. Who do you think is playing to avoid the cellar?

 

7. Who, in your opinion, got the best hire over the offseason?

 

8. Does anyone get a bi-district playoff win in 2017? Who?

 

9. Who has the toughest non-district schedule?

 

10. Top games this season for the 16-5A? (District or Non-district)

1. Who do you think takes steps forward in 2017? Meaning more wins than they had in 2016. Why?

It has to be Hallsville right? I mean, they had a good "roster" last season and failed to ever mature or progress... I expect that to change.

2. Who do you think takes steps backwards in 2017? Why?

Texas High. Maybe not so much in the win and loss column... but the guys in the know in this district are just saying they are young, which I think leads to my answer on the next question...

3. Who is your favorite for the district championship? Why?

Marshall. I don't know enough about what the new offense will be like, or the new coaching staff, or whatever else... but we can all agree that the talent is there to edge out Texas High this season.

4. Who is the most likely challenger for said district championship? Why?

Marshall and Texas High will be 1-2. If that changes, TX High School FB will be shocked.

4. Who do you think snatches up the #3 and #4 slots? Why?

Hallsville at 3, MP at 4. 3 has already been covered. 4 is just a guess based on the history of the other programs.

5. Who is your darkhorse? Why?

I don't really think there is one. But you can always count on someone sneaking up on us... and if i had to guess, that would have to be MP this season.

6. Who do you think is playing to avoid the cellar?

Greenville.

7. Who, in your opinion, got the best hire over the offseason?

Marshall with Mathis, hands down. The twitter buzz was literally state-wide.

8. Does anyone get a bi-district playoff win in 2017? Who?

Marshall, and Texas High if they finish 1-2 as expected.

9. Who has the toughest non-district schedule?

I have no clue. That Carthage scrimmage paired with Longview makes Marshall's schedule look like good preparation.

10. Top games this season for the 16-5A? (District or Non-district)

1. Who do you think takes steps forward in 2017? Meaning more wins than they had in 2016. Why?

Take your pick. The district was horrendous in 2016....so EVERYONE should win more games in 2017. If not.... we may have a repeat this season. But if I had to pick ONE... it has to be Hallsville, who went (2-8). I honestly think they were better than their record showed...but the loss to PT was baffling. Which leads me to PT.... every year is the year we think we see them step up, but it doesn't happen. Offense continues to put points on the board, but defense is their achilles. Marshall should also see improvement...but where the extra W's come from is tough to predict outside of the Shadowood game. Texas High was 10-0.... hard to improve that.

2. Who do you think takes steps backwards in 2017? Why?

Mount Pleasant. Sure...they were an ugly (3-8). But they made the playoffs, which was unexpected by most. They may get more victories due to non-district.....but a win over SS in 2017 isn't a given.

Texas High fans seem skeptical about how quickly their young team will gel. History says they will be fine, but after a 10-0 season.... anything less would be a step back.

3. Who is your favorite for the district championship? Why?

Texas High- Because they have ruled the roost in this district when Longview isn't around to bully them.

4. Who is the most likely challenger for said district championship? Why?

Marshall- Because history says so.... and the Mavs have a lot coming back in 2017. BUT.... no Cam Haller since 2013.

4. Who do you think snatches up the #3 and #4 slots? Why?

#3 Hallsville

#4 Sulphur Springs. Owens will right the ship in 2017 I think.

5. Who is your darkhorse? Why?

Pine Tree. Because eventually this pick will hit. One day.

6. Who do you think is playing to avoid the cellar?

Greenville. Only because Marshall doesn't have a girls football team.

7. Who, in your opinion, got the best hire over the offseason?

If we go by Hype alone....Marshall.

If we go by who traditionally has the most athletes for a coach to work with.....Texas High

I honestly don't know enough about Hallsville's guy to have an opinion. He's a winner. But only in lower classifications. And with a STACKED team.

And while they are the 3 newest.... MP and PT coaches are in only their 2nd/3rd years. Owens at SS is the tenured guy in the district.

8. Does anyone get a bi-district playoff win in 2017? Who?

Our best chance is in Div II.... whoever goes that route. Because whoever gets Div I will likely get the defending champs from Highland Park and most likely Mesquite Poteet. If my predictions hold true, Marshall and Texas High will be D-1 unless MP can sneak in again. So best playoff win chance according to my predictions are Hallsville and SS.

9. Who has the toughest non-district schedule?

Toss up between Marshall and Texas High. Mavs have 6A Tyler Lee, Longview, and Corsicana. Tigers have Bishop Lynch, Arkansas High, and Kilgore. Pine Tree has Kilgore and Henderson. Hallsville has Wylie East and Whitehouse.

10. Top games this season for the 16-5A? (District or Non-district)

Texas High Vs. Kilgore

Texas High Vs. Arkansas High (Vs. Barry Norton)

Marshall Vs. Longview (I can hope for an exciting game)

Marshall Vs. Corsicana

Hallsville Vs. Wylie East

Texas High Vs. Marshall

Hallsville Vs. Pine Tree

Hallsville Vs. SS

MP Vs. SS

I honestly think the biggest story this fall/winter is going to be realignment.

 

With Texas High likely the only 5A team in East Texas to make Div I..... that will likely send Texarkana to Dallas for district play, which likely dominoes to Greenville, Ennis, and Corsicana going back to the metroplex too.

 

Seeing a massive East Texas 5A Div II district seems to be likely.... which could put Nac and MP or even Nac and SS in the same district.

I don't think it'd be a shock to see SS and MP go west as well with 5A D2 lurking. It's not like they haven't done that option in the past.

 

Texas High is really, really, really going to be on an island in 5A D1...West Mesquite has a very strong chance to go up, Highland Park is virtually a lock to go up, McKinney North has a chance to go up as well.

I think Sherman will be D1 if memory serves me correctly but its been a few years since I have looked at their enrollment.

Mavs won both of their 7 on 7 matches in league play.

 

Heard Herrington looked very sharp at QB.

Mavs currently have 4 players with D1 offers already and it's only June. Not sure that's ever happened in my memory.

Walden is at Southern Miss. Coaching receivers I think. Guy before him went to a school in Tennessee I believe.

I wouldn't be surprised. He seems very driven and getting a D1 position coach job this early has set him up. Look at the OC at Oklahoma that's just taken over as HC. Moved up the ranks very quickly. Think he's 34.

I look for Kelehan to have a good year in Griedl's offense, he has good hands and will catch the ball in traffic. He's worked hard in the off season in the weightroom adding 15-20 lbs and is 6'1" with improved speed. There are several sophomores who will be on the varsity and could start on offense and defense. Mathis has he's Mavs pushing each other, there's a lot of competition for starting roles. Still have get the job done on the field.
