Places you liked to eat at that are no longer in business.

I'm limiting this to what I remember in East Texas :

Johnny Cace's, Pancho's, El Chico, Monterrey House - I loved the goat's milk candy at the bottom of the chips, Lupe's, K&N Root Beer, Top Burger, Burger Chef, Wyatt's Cafeteria, Sizzler, Shakey's Pizza, Pizza Inn, Alvin Ord's, Western Sizzler. I forgot the name of the Mexican Restaurant that was on S. High near where the S&H Green Stamp store used to be. They also had a location in Kilgore on 259 before it turned into 31. They also had one in Marshall ant 59 N and Highway 80. The Shed and La Hacienda in Kilgore also in Nacogdoches. Fat Cat's, Mardi Gras, Hickory Fare, and I forgot the name of the burger joint across from the Bowling Alley. David Smoak had several remote's there. Captain D's. There might be more in Tyler, but I haven't been up there in a while to really drive around and see what's left.

One place I truly miss that wasn't a place to eat at was South Green Miniature Golf Course. It blew every Putt Putt Golf out of the water.

George's Grill - Shreveport

I used to love Abe's Seafood and Centenary Oyster House. Both went out of business after the casino's came to town. Another is Jay's Marine Bar and Grill in Dallas they had the best rolls and there was a large assortment.

Old San Francisco Steak House........loved the one in Austin and Houston........

That was another good one. I loved the block of swiss that they had on the table. I knew they were headed for trouble once they started up a lunch buffet off 35 in Dallas, and hardly anyone came for lunch. That reminds me of the Coffee Landing Buffet with all you could eat seafood and crawfish.

^ I'm kinda shocked that they never rebuilt Coffee Landing. That was the go to seafood place for awhile.

If I remember right it was $19.99 , but well worth the money if you could eat. It was well worth it, because back when I went I could eat a lot more than I can today. I filled up on crawfish, oysters, shrimp, and crab legs. If people ate like me back in the early 90's I can see why they didn't rebuild. I went with my good buddy, and him and his wife chowed down on at least 10 lbs. of crawfish between them, and me and my wife ate 4 dozen raw oysters, at least 3 lbs. of crab legs, 2 lbs. of shrimp, and 4 lbs. of crawfish. By todays standards that's a minimum of $86 for only $40 back then.

Decades ago the place to eat outside Garrison on FM 95 was the Brick Yard Café ... before the Acme Brick plant closed they operated a café that served the best plate lunches you ever had in your life. It was only open for lunch on weekdays as I remember and I think it cost about $3 - $4 for a full course family style meal complete with drink and a big piece of pie with 2" meringue on top ... Truckers and business travelers would drive out of their way to eat at the Brick Yard Café ... Not many places as good as that anymore ...

Does anyone remember Texas Star Cafe back in the '80s? It was in the corner of the old "Pointe North" shopping center (West Loop, near where Casa Ole is now).

Great steaks. My mom ran the place until the owner was busted for gun/drug smuggling or something. The Von Erich boys ate there a lot. I did a chin-up holding on to Kerry's flexed arm.

Is that the one in Longview that became the Rusty Nail ? My wife worked at the Rusty Nail for a while. Another place was McCann St. Grill. I don't see how that place shut down, because every time I went to eat there it was packed. That reminds me of Steak and Ale. I really liked that place, and went there for many special occasions when I lived in Tyler. Another was Hoffbrau that later became Dream Weaver's that eventually shut down. While I only ate there once, and the food was alright was Pelican's that became Armadillo Willy's.

That's the place! And did your wife work at McCann Street during the 80s? Because my mom was there too.

If I remember correctly, McCann Street didn't close because of bad business, but shady dealings by the owner. You're right, it was always packed, and the food there was superb. Played a lotta beach volleyball there too.

She did there as well. Her name was Charli Huebner Murphy at that time. Another place I liked was Hot Biscuit at Gilmer and Loop 281. I never cared for the Waffle Shoppe, but did eat there a time or two. I forgot why Don Stansel shut down the Hot Biscuit, but I know there's one here in Houston by Bush Airport. I almost went to eat there to see if it was the same, because they had a great CFS.

I never ate at The Kettle on Estes Parkway or on Loop 323, but I remember them. Dan Stansel owned the Hot Biscuits starting in Nacogdoches and further south, he's Don's twin brother. I should ask my old family friend if he's still alive. I remember eating at Sambo's as a kid, and it was better than Denny's or Waffle House. I still refuse to eat at Waffle House.
