GAME PREVIEW & SERIES REVIEW

From one near upset to one actually happening. Longview and Rockwall’s week five match ups proved much the difference in both team’s rivalries game. Longview, meeting Tyler Lee for the 58th time overall, saw the Red Raiders climb back to a tie in the opening minutes of the 2nd quarter and compete well with the Lobos as Longview took a blocked extra point that was returned for two points and a last second field goal to the break with their 19-13 lead. After halftime, the Lobos decided they weren’t playing around anymore spouting off 35 points to win their 13th consecutive game over the Red Raiders, 54-26. Tyler Lee’s only offensive touchdown came in the 3rd quarter, before a long fumble return in the 4th gave them their only two scores of the 2nd half. The Lobo defense has given up a total of 23 points in the second half of games through five this season. One problem remains for Longview though. The first half, more importantly the second quarter. After scoring the most points they’ve scored in a second quarter this season with 12 against Tyler Lee, the Lobos sit at a -5 overall in the quarter..which isn’t as bad when you take put the 31 scored against vs Mesquite Horn. However, the team’s play in the first half this season has been spotty at best despite holding a lead in 4 of the 5 games. Longview has erupted in the second half of each game this season outscoring their opponent 119-29 through five games. Against Tyler Lee, A’Darius Carter led the way for the Lobos as he tied the school rushing record with 5 rushing touchdowns in a night. Carter came up just short of a 91 season long record of 6 total touchdowns in a game, which was set twice by Leonard Ray in the 1927 season. Irregardless, Carter became just the 6th player to score 5 or more touchdowns for Longview. Where the Lobos found paydirt, Rockwall found misery. Despite holding a 27-14 lead heading into the fourth quarter, the Jackets couldn’t hold of their cross town rival Heath as the Hawks came all the way back scoring the last touchdown of the game and taking their first lead of the night with 0:00 on the clock. Despite some saying the Hawks didn’t actually get in the end zone, Heath knocked off their rivals for the second straight season in a 28-27 upset. The loss for Rockwall comes a week after seeing the Jackets dominate John Tyler, 48-7. The series between the Lobos and Jackets dates all the way back to 1931, when Rockwall knocked off Longview 20-6 at Jacket Field in a Class B Bi-District game. Since that meeting, the Lobos have rolled off six consecutive wins over the Jackets. Longview comes into Wilkerson-Sanders Memorial Stadium with a perfect 4-0 record in Rockwall, with the closest game being a 14-10 Lobo win over Rockwall back in 2004. Longview’s last visit to Rockwall saw the Lobos trail Heath, 14-0, before most Longview fans even got to the stadium. But the Lobos rolled off 35 straight in a 35-21 win.

In 1933, Nick Wheeler tallied three touchdown runs as the Lobos knocked off Marshall, 18-0.

In 1939, Charles Sapp’s rushing touchdown late in the 4th quarter was all Longview needed to defeat Highland Park at Lobo Stadium.

In 1944, Longview absolutely dominated Athens on the road as the Lobos rolled 45-0.

In 1950, Sonny Jones tallied from two yards out in the 4th quarter as a missed extra point was the only difference in a 7-6 win over Henderson at Lion Stadium.

That's a TD !!

Not sure what the controversial ending is really all about since there's no instant replay in High School football.

Even IF his knee was down at the 1 yard line as long as the officials ruled it a score then that's all that really matters.

Smells like Rockwall's whining is sour grapes...lol !

They blew a winnable game in the end.

It looks as if 11-6A is going to be an interesting battle this season !

I dunno, he looks in to me...

You sure better remember this play when you play Hearh. They run it to perfection. And it's hard to stop.

They put trips to one side and one to the other with a single back.

They run the zone read out if it , if the QB keeps it he run towards the edge more and when the corner pulls up the receiver drops back for a pass. You can see it in this play the receiver for Heath dropping back in the end zone but he keeps it for the score. The back up QB #5 is actually as good as their starter. He for sure a lot faster.

Sure didn't see the QB keep it as it was your run of the mill zone option pitch to the trailing back.

They keep that as a run play probably 9 out of 10 times as Heath will be committed to their run game with the potential to sprinkle a few more passes along the way.

Of course, this thread isn't so much about Heath but about the team on deck...Rockwall.

The Lobos must have a better showing on the road in the first half with a better focus especially in the 2nd quarter where they've had issues.

The winner of this game would still be in great shape to challenge for the District crown and obviously one of the four playoff spots where at least six of the 11-6A teams are currently in contention.

Oh and Longview will be attempting to garner win #700 in school history with their next victory !

I do believe that Longview may have found their offensive identity with the Lee win.

Haynes King as the starting/passing QB with A'Darius Carter at 6'4" 215 coming in with the heavy "Dirty Bird" power/short yardage rushing package.

It's fairly obvious that if the Lobo WR's can learn to catch King's bullet passes it will go along way in aiding the overall efficiency.

There were no fewer than SIX dropped passes delivered by King that damaged a couple of Longview possessions in the opening half.

Also, the fact Longview didn't fully commit to it's power run game, save for Carter scoring a short TD inside the five yard line and breaking off a 38yd jaunt on a third and short play for a score in the first half UNTIL getting on track with it in greater detail after halftime by mixing Carter, Williams and Edwards into a dominant force on the ground.

The identity of showing balance with the power run game along with having the ability through the air with the better passing QB will be important the rest of the way through District play.
