DaveTV1
I thought it was cheesy even as a kid. It wasn't what I was hoping for, but I watched it.
Mr. P
I'd be the last one to defend it, but it needs to be understood for what it was, and the context it existed in. It was directed by a Broadway theater guy who didn't really get science fiction, but saw it as purely children's entertainment, and thus: campy. Yeah, it's terrible, but it's also pretty standard television fare for the late '70s. Lucas was working on the mighty-mighty Empire Strikes Back at the time, so he contributed little more than story outline and character designs. But before we let him completely off the hook, this is also the guy who gave us that cheesefest "Phantom Menace," that painfully awkward '50s diner scene homage ("Want some death sticks?") in Clones, and the existence of Jar-Jar freakin Binks.
