GAME PREVIEW & SERIES REVIEW
And so...we meet again. Two bitter old rivals meet for the fourth time in three years in post season play after two unexpected victories propelled their teams to the 6A Division II State Quarterfinals. The Lobos are fresh off a victory that saw them fall behind 14-0 early in the 2nd quarter only to claw their way back before halftime and take the lead, never to relinquish it. One final grasp wasn't enough for #8 Klein Collins to come from behind and Longview held onto the victory, 30-24. On the other side, the Lufkin Panthers saw themselves dominate the Spring Westfield Mustangs before nearly squandering a 14-3 lead. The Pack were able to hold on in New Caney though, and bring home a defensive 14-11 victory. The two teams now turn their attention to each other. An opening week win for the Lobos over Lufkin, 35-16, might give some fans the idea that Longview will walk away with the victory...but leave no doubt that these are two very different teams from that opening week clash. A young Lufkin squad has matured and reeled off 7 consecutive victories on the season after falling to the Woodlands in their only other blemish. The Pack are into the State Quarterfinals for the first time since 2005 and are enjoying their highest win total in a single season since 2006 when the Pack finished 11-1. Longview, on the other hand, has since an even bigger difference as injuries had decimated the Lobos early in the season and a quarterback change four weeks into the season following the loss to Mesquite Horn has propelled Longview all the way into the final 8. Longview's Haynes King became the 3rd Longview quarterback to ever throw for 20 touchdowns in a season with his four touchdown day against Klein Collins, and improved himself to 9-0 as the starter of the green and gold. Longview's Jaylin Brown, fresh off a week where he broke the record for most career receiving touchdowns in a Lobo uniform, pulled in three against the Tigers to broke the single season receiving touchdown record. The two teams have faced off 9th previous times in the playoffs, with Longview holding a 5-4 edge. The two teams have faced off four times since John King became a coach at Longview High. Once in 2002 when King was an assistant, the Pack edged the Lobos 24-21 at Rose Stadium. In 2004, in King's first season as the head coach, the Panthers came from behind to defeat Longview 31-21 at Homer Bryce Stadium after trailing entering the fourth quarter. In 2014, Longview erased a 28-0 hole against Lufkin and came from behind to win 43-42 at Rose Stadium. And in their last meeting in 2015, at Rose Stadium, the two teams were level at 10 going into halftime before Longview dominated the second half and rushed their way to a 31-10 victory. Since ending the Pack's 11-game winning streak over Longview in 2007, the Lobos have rolled to a 9-4 record over the Panthers and more recently, since 2011, Longview has gained a 7-2 record over the Pack. It's a game everyone in East Texas was hoping to see for a 6A Region II Final when the playoffs began, and it's one we're getting. What a showdown Saturday night will be!

No doubt we both should enjoy this moment. I don’t think either one of us (you and I specifically) expected this.

I’m not gonna get into the game yet, just want to enjoy the win. But both of these teams have changed so differently since the start of the season.

Excited we get to be the showcase for East Texas again.

LOBO UP!!!

Congrats to both teams. Glad to see yall representing 6a ETX! No more small schools only. We got 2 teams in the quarterfinals at the highest level. Very impressive. Now if we can just get some 5a programs going, lol. Maybe JT will drop. Or Carthage will opt up after winning #6 this year, lol. I kid I kid. For real excited to see both schools this deep. Very cool.

As for the prediction, there isn't really anything that indicates Longview loses this game honestly. They just beat what was thought to be the best team in D2, arguably the best in the state in Klein Collins.

Expecting this to be a good game! 2004 all over again.

ANTI, or 84, or 73 or Randy....did we ever figure out where those refs were from today?

I mean, those were the worst set of refs I have ever watched in my life at a Longview football game.

And we better not have instant replay next Saturday like we did today!!!
